Ich Bin Ein Air Horne Paris Signs in Germany

05 February 2011: St John's (23) Paris Horne guards UCLA (5) Jerime Anderson during an NCAA basketball game between the St. John's Red Storm and the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion in Westwood, CA. UCLA defeated St. John's 66-59.

It's not the league or the player that most fans expected, but one of the ten seniors on last year's miracle team that returned to the NCAA Tournament has allowed St. John's University to once again lay claim to producing a professional talent. Earlier this afternoon, Red Storm senior associate athletic director for communications and men's basketball sports information director Mark Fratto officially announced via the team's Twitter account that shooting guard Paris Horne became the first from last year's senior class to sign a professional deal. Horne will take his talents to Germany as the newest member of the BG Göttingen squad in the Basketball Bundesliga. Horne is not the only familiar name on the BG Göttingen roster either, as … [Read more...]

St. John’s Headlines New-Look Holiday Festival

Msg2005d

It's just not a college basketball season unless the Holiday Festival is headlined by the St. John's Red Storm inside the venerable confines of Madison Square Garden. Fortunately for college basketball purists and old-school fans, history will once again be repeating itself, as the boys from Queens will take their talents to midtown Manhattan in what will be the second trip to the Garden for the youngest squad in program history. Most of these players will be making their debuts inside the home of the New York Knicks one month prior as part of the culmination of the 2K Sports Classic, an event that will also include Arizona, Mississippi State and Texas A&M. Following a two-day confluence in which Steve Lavin's NCAA Tournament … [Read more...]

God’s Gift Achiuwa Chooses to Join St. John’s and Steve Lavin

god's gift face

When describing the unique situation that St. John's would be presented with in regard to its 2011-12 roster, head coach Steve Lavin remarked that the Red Storm recruiting effort would be reminiscent of Noah's Ark in that the coach would need two players at every position. In the fall signing period that ended just after the start of the college basketball season, the Johnnies had received at least a pair of commitments from each position except that of their frontcourt; where 6-10 California product Norvel Pelle remained the lone interior presence to publicize his decision to play his collegiate basketball under Lavin. So it remained, until now. After a visit to the Queens campus that fittingly came during Holy Week, the aptly named … [Read more...]

nytop100

College basketball is a game of youth, and what better way to find out about the stars of tomorrow than by getting a look at the future? A total of 125 prospects auditioned for what could very well be their future a few years from now; and while most aren’t at the “can’t miss” prospect level just yet, the majority of these aspiring hoopsters showed off their massive potential for some of the national landscape to see firsthand for themselves. Thanks For The Memories

Dwight Hardy drives

After a nine-year period marked by transition and restoration, St. John's finally made its long-awaited return to the grandest stage of them all last night.  However, it didn't go exactly the way everyone had hoped it would. Playing with heavy hearts and greater motivation than at any other point during their resurgence under coach Steve Lavin, the Red Storm (21-12) were simply unable to hold off a Gonzaga (25-9) team that shot and rebounded with equal proficiency at the Pepsi Center in Denver; as the Bulldogs used a strong presence both inside and outside to win their tenth consecutive game, defeating the Johnnies in the matchup of the No. 6 (St. John's) and 11 (Gonzaga) seeds in the Southeast regional by the final of 86-71 and … [Read more...]

Johnnies vs. Zags in Return to Dance

selectionsunday

After nine long years of attempting to reclaim their spot among college basketball's elite, St. John's has finally found its redemption; and will take on a former NCAA Tournament opponent in their much-anticipated return to the Big Dance. After literally waiting for 66 teams to be announced before them, the Johnnies (21-11) were the next-to-last team proclaimed as a Tournament participant; as they were announced as the sixth seed in the Southeast regional.  One of a record eleven Big East teams to make the field of 68, the Red Storm will travel to Denver for a Thursday matchup with West Coast Conference champion Gonzaga, (24-9) winners of their last nine, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  Should St. John's emerge victorious, … [Read more...]

Not Enough Juice In The End

SPORTS NCAA BASKETBALL

At various points this afternoon, it seemed like it was not only possible, but destined to happen.  The ten men that make up St. John's senior class have done many things together, but beating Syracuse had not been one of them.  Barring a third showdown in the NCAA Tournament, it looks like a win against the Orange will stand as the lone accomplishment missing from their resumes. Paced by five players in double figures, including a career-high 12 points from freshman Fab Melo, the Orange (26-6) finally wore down St. John's (21-11) and put the game away, defeating the Johnnies by the final of 79-73 in their Big East quarterfinal matchup.  Next up for Syracuse will be Connecticut, who defeated Pittsburgh 76-74 on a Kemba Walker … [Read more...]

Weathering The Storm

Malik Boothe dives against Rutgers

Playing a team that survived a bitter fight against its intrastate rival just 24 hours ago, St. John's wasn't going to have it easy in their 2011 Big East tournament debut.  Nothing could have been further from the truth today as the Red Storm (21-10) used five free throws and an angel on their shoulders to outlast Rutgers (15-17) in the second round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.  The fifth-seeded Johnnies will next face fourth seed Syracuse tomorrow afternoon in the quarterfinals. After squandering a lead only to get it back inside the final minute with foul shots from Dwight Hardy, (17 points) Sean Evans, (13 points, nine rebounds) and D.J. Kennedy; (11 points) St. John's caught a break when Justin Brownlee … [Read more...]

The Big Apple’s Big Three

NCAA BASKETBALL: MAR 08 Big East Championship - Seton Hall v Rutgers

Pierce, Allen and Garnett. Wade, James and Bosh. Even Jordan, Pippen and Rodman if you want to go back further in history. One thing remains the same, each trio has either won or contended for a championship. This past spring, New York-area college basketball took on a troika of its own within the Big East coaching fraternity; and although each head coach is at a different program, all have made a positive impact in their first season on the bench. As the Big East tournament draws closer, two of these three coaches will lead their teams into battle later today against one another, with the third awaiting today's winner. Before the opening tip, let's take a moment to evaluate each coach and their rookie campaigns, starting with the man in … [Read more...]

One More Shining Moment

Justin Burrell Senior Night

Dave Krupinski of JohnnyJungle.com is the biggest fan of the big east. Check out the new naughty Volvo S60 as Volvo searches for the Biggest Fan. It seems like St. John's has managed to take everything it couldn't do over the last three seasons, and finally get it done with authority in this campaign. Yet there was something that still remained unresolved: Picking up a win while wearing the Johnnies' alternate black jerseys. You can now cross that off the Red Storm's bucket list as well. After not being able to put South Florida away for the first thirty minutes, No. 15 St. John's (20-10, 12-6 in the Big East) gradually flexed their muscle in the process of grinding out a 72-56 victory over the Bulls. (9-22, 3-15) Four Red Storm … [Read more...]
