Coming to Queens 0-2, with losses @ Hartford and @ Rutgers. Reports are that Donyell Marshall will not coach the game tomorrow for the Blue Devils.

The NY Post article is spot on.

I think we’ll win 82-57. I like what Clark said about recognizing a problem, accepting ownership of it and then working with Owens on how to solve it. That’s leadership.

In terms of Yakwe and Alibegovic, let’s see if we can find something positive. Anything.

At this point, I give up on Amar. Last game he took 2 shots , both 3 pointers. He has shown no desireto play inside. Yakwe is an enigma, because he had a good freshman year.

CCSU is a small team that we match up with very well. I expect us to out-rebound them, but I hope the team doesn't see that as a problem solved heading into the Nebraska game. We need to carry our weight OOC  to help out the conference.

Right, I think he doesn't. I think that because I heard Mullin tell him to "stay out of the middle" on the telly last year during a time out. And also because I assume that if he disobeyed the coaches instructions he wouldn't play. That doesn't excuse his failure to rebound, but it explains why he stands at the three point line.

His success is entirely on him. He needs to pay attention to what he should be doing on defense but the only thing he does with conviction is spot up for a three pointer that he misses at a high clip. He’s a senior now, and I don’t care how limited he is as an athlete, he can still understand what he should be doing on a given play.

I thought his ceiling was Donald Emanuel, and that guy took his lumps before he became a 3 point shooting senior center off the bench who could also board. He didn’t have a wonderful career start to finish but he did finally put it all together and he became a key role player as a senior for a tournament team.

Is that too much to ask for Ali B?

Don't want to put the mush on him, but Trimble is off to the best shooting start I've ever seen at St. John's. 8-9 from three through the exhibitions and games. If he can hang around 40% and give us two a game that really helps.

He's good to spill between a media timeout a game. (4 min)

If he plays 6 min it's probably -3 points (a sloppy soft and 1 foul with bucket)

Powell is the second best player on SH IMO so I don't think that is a very fair comp, but I'd gladly take it. Trimble is confident and, so far, he's done a great job getting the puppies set. That's half the battle.

They are both awful.

I'd rather have Trimble take all of their minutes and take our chances.

If Yakwe can't produce anything for himself against a tesm like this with the minutes he got, we should not expect anything more the rest of year.

To be fair, I thought Yakwe worked hard defensively. He boxed out, switched on pick and rolls and fought to get back to his man. Actually thought he played better than Owens, and didn't see much of Clark in the second half.

Like you guys have said, Ali is a 12th man who is forced to play the role of the 9th man.

AhMEd continues to be AhMEd, can't spell Ahmed without ME. I'd rather see Trimble take his minutes. The three headed backcourt is serious. Those guys will not miss two open shots in a row.

Sluggish game, but its a W, hopefully they were thinking about Nebraska.

There was a gaudy big run in the first half (20-2?) and a similar one in the second half.  Yakwe was on the floor for both.  It isn't always about stats.

We really don't get much out of playing teams like this, other than giving Trimble a chance to play and letting Clark and Simon shake off some of the rust and get acclimated to playing with Ponds and LoVett. This team plays only in spurts, and they lose their focus when they get up 20 or so. I know it's early, but it seems the team plays better when Ponds and LoVett are not on the court together -- it's clear that our defense is better when they're not both on the floor. Both have to pick up their defensive intensity.

It will interesting to see how we look against Nebraska, a team with legit big 10 size and decent talent.

Couple of times when we had huge leads the guards took the foot off the gas and specifically tried to get Yawke involved offensively, via the post or otherwise.  His play, by and large, the past two years is baffling when compared to what we saw from him as a freshman, when he wasn't supposed to be ready to play.
Title: Re: Game 2: Central Connecticut State

Lovett was off offensively in the first half.  Picked it up in the second.  Both him and Ponds were looking to move the ball and create for others at times, and frankly Lovett was able to free himself for open looks that he didn't go to the rim as much as normal.

Appreciate your input but maybe as important a player as Alibegowitch deserves his own thread? You could discuss his shortcomings at length there and have a back and forth about his positives and negatives and ridiculousnesses and so forth. Because he's a critical player moving forward. Personally I'm hoping he stays for another year or red shirts. What do you say?

The first three are obvious, but Trimble is better than he looks. He looks like he spent all summer sitting on the couch eating potato chips. And maybe he did, but even with a belly he’s still good. Imagine what kind of player he could be if he got into shape if he’s able to play while out of shape.

Not a bad game overall. Lovett and Ponds make a nice duo as we all know. Simon seems like a glue guy. Does a little bit of everything. Defends, rebounds, passes and scores. Clark has to foul less and rebound more. Yakwe had a lot of energy and good body language, but wasn’t too productive. Trimble is strong and an excellent shooter. Plays well for an early season freshman. Going to be a nice 4 year player.  Owens and Bash were OK , but would like to get a little more out of them. Amar can sit on the bench and cheer. Our defense is improving and I like our ball movement.

Marcus and Shamorie truly are among the nation's best backcourts, sprinkle in Justin's athleticism and we have a formiddable tandem capable of big things all Winter. Justin is a welcomed addition, just what the doctor ordered. You can see why Malik left now.

Marcus in particular is so polished offensively, it's undersung through two games on this site, the guy is excellent.

It's the complimentary pieces that need to deliver Thursday night. Sign Greg Williams tomorrow, pick up a major D1 victory Thursday, and we have  some real momentum heading into Orlando next week.

Ponds is ridiculous.  Harrison was the best rebounding guard ive seen at sju. He was.

What about Kennedy?

I really enjoy watching all our guards. Ponds, Lovett, Simon & Trimble. That's a good squad.

The first three are obvious, but Trimble is better than he looks. He looks like he spent all summer sitting on the couch eating potato chips. And maybe he did, but even with a belly he’s still good. Imagine what kind of player he could be if he got into shape if he’s able to play while out of shape.
hes the best defensive guard after simon

Hatten.

Rebounding from the guard position is a great indicator of instincts for the game. It's almost always a great sign out a guard.

Poorly attended. 2k is being generous.  Hopefully free food and games at Taffner will bring some people out on Thurs.

Walden's a human highlight reel. He's worth more than the price of admission alone.

Trimble sighting.

Clark sat seemingly the entire second half and finished with only 17 minutes. He's off a long layoff and needs work.  He should have been allowed to foul out.  I hope that's all it was.

61 and 55 from these non Bcs conference teams is an encouraging trend.  Keeping opponents in the 50's and 60's would be a winning formula for us with our big O.

Been enjoying the new dumpling house across the street.  Location location location.

Yawke is going to be awful again.

Just give him the role of rebounder and have forget about offense

Just find some guy from the playgrounds and he'll give better minutes than Yakwe. Non-factor in every way.

This team is a Justin Brownlee/Burrell, hell even Orlando Sanchez away from being top 3 in the BE. It's too bad we have Yakwe and Alibegovic wasting minutes at the 5.

Alibegovic obviously has this year to leave some kind of mark on this program. Rebound young man. That’s all we want. He did have 3 in 5 minutes of play. So, he did improve.

Yakwe is a better defender in the zone. He can’t stay with anyone defensively. It seems he’s learned no post up moves or if he has, he isn’t comfortable making any of them. Why is he posting up if he won’t try to score? He has no plan for when he gets the ball. No instincts and he isn’t being taught.

A great rebounding forward.

I’ll take Ponds. And abolsutley, his instincts are off the charts.

I give up on Amar. If hes going to camp out at the 3 point line , we dont need him. Not even a good 3 point shooter. Despite the height difference Id rather see Trimble . Much better shooter, perhaps stronger and probably a better rebounder

Michael Porter was the best rebounding guard in ST John's history. Not sure about his instincts but he could jump.

LOL. Alibegovic has no business being on the court. Ever. He has no basketball IQ, and less skill

Don't know how you can definitively state that his skill is less than his basketball IQ.

He certainly hasn’t earned playing time with his play but this program doesn’t have a choice. Mullin has to get blood from a stone. Two stones if you count Yakwe, and I do.

If I were coach I would never take Yakwe out for foul trouble.

Can’t disagree. But at least Yakwe plays on the inside. We have absolutely no use for Amar camping out at the 3 point line .as I have been saying. We need our bigs to be hungry and go after rebounds and Clark has to minimize his fouling.

I would too...I was just pointing out his only competition in my time. Ponds would eat Harrison alive athletically on the glass.

I don't understand how you think this kid is out of shape. Because he's bulky? Does he need to be as thin as Owens to be in shape? I don't see the kid Huffin or Puffin when he's in the game, so Id say he's in better shape than most.

I agree that he looks in shape.  He should be the official team consultant for putting on weight.  Most of the team, particularly Owens and Yakwe, need to move chips, fried food and pizza to a prominent place on their food pyramid. :)

Looks like a new 3rd walk-on sitting on bench.  Short white kid

Jay Camus, played at Archbishop Molloy and Manhattan (one game)
