Ranking the Big East Coaches

3. Steve Lavin (St. Johns)

Lavin has had one of the largest gaps between coaching gigs of any coach in the nation (eight seasons), so therefore many don't remember how much success he had at UCLA.  Before he came to St. Johns and return the Johnnies to prominence in the Big East, Lavin was excellent as a coach in southern California.  As the head coach at UCLA, Lavin won over 20 games in six of his seven seasons and led the Bruins four Sweet Sixteen appearances and one appearance in the Elite Eight, as he proved himself as one of the best coaches at that time.  He then took time off before coming to NYC to coach St. Johns in 2010. In his first season as the headman of the Johnnies, he didn't seem to have lost a step. He immediately came in and brought the Johnnies back to national relevance and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 2002. Since then he battled cancer the next season, and came back this past season just as strong, leading the Red Storm to a No.1 seed in the NIT Tournament.

Goes to show it's all perspective and in the eyes of the beholder.

This should get posted on Bruins board.  It would last 5 seconds before being yanked down with a board ban threat from the mighty Oz, I mean Nestor...

What the hell does "all perspective and in the eye of the beholder" mean?
Either Lavin got the most talented team in the conference to the tourney or he did not. Its rather objective actually. And UCLA fans would simply laught at this article if posted on  their board. Some writers unscientific totally made up out of thin air decision to put lavin 3rd doesnt challenge the FACT of the guys suckiness as a coach and failure this season

Season was a disappointment, wouldn't say it was a failure. We finished where we were predicted to. Anyone know were Lavin ranks among his BE counter parts in terms of base salary?

Anything short of the tournament was a failure.

Was our predicted finish in any way related to tepid peer respect for Lav's ability to get this deep, "talented" team to achieve? Or was this team's talent level overrated? Just asking.

That's exactly right.  Everyone points to the fact that coaches voted us 4th in the preseason poll.   Well, yeah, try reconciling that fact with the statements by Buzz and Wright etc that SJU had the most talent in the BE.    Something doesn't add up.
They downgrade us because of who our coach is.  You guys might not want to admit that, but it's a pretty reasonable inference.

Don't you guys get tired of bashing or sticking up for the coach every single day? There must be something else to do instead of going back and forth.

Sure, we talk about which recruit can contribute more right of the bat.. Thomas or Cunningham, we talk about the NFL draft, we talk about Pineda cheating, etc.
But when the thread is about comparing the value and ability of coaches in our league ... yea, the conversation is bound to come back to the mistakes Lavin has been making.     I don't enjoy it.  I'd much rather be talking about how we unexpectedly won a game we shouldn't have, or how Lavin out coached someone else for a change ... but that hasn't happened much lately now has it?

Lavin is the best recruiter and the worst in-game coach in the conference.  Should put him in the middle of the list somewhere.

It wasn't where we finished, it was how we played

0-5
Team turmoil
Team quitting
No show for the final game.

Many of these guys are back. Will they be more motivated or are they trapped in the memory of what was ?

I beilieve those two concepts are not related. Being the deepest team does not mean you are the best team. I mentioned before, our 6-10 players are better than other teams 6-10 players. It's 1-5 that win basketball games. Don't think coaches would rank a team based on their belief on a coaches ability. I don't believe anyone of us know what coaches in the BE truly think about Lavin's coaching ability. I do know Rick Pitino picked us to finish first Lavin's first year. Don't believe he would have said that if he felt Lavin was that bad of a coach. Although I feel its clear Lavin's tinkering with the lineups may have cost us a game or two this season, we were not better than the teams who finished ahead of us.

Don't really know Pitino's true opinion either as all coaches have agendas.

SJU did have the best talent preseason but the team did not develop or play as expected by the optimists among us.  Part of the blame lies with lavin and part lies with selfish, inconsistent and underachieving   play by the players, particularly Sanchez and Pointer.  The team had a disappointing season but not a failure. If they start 2-3 in the BE they are in the torney and everyone would be happy.  Hopefully the players and coaches can put this season behind them and do well next year.  One or two more frontline recruits coupled with a great backcourt should mean an excellent year.

Putting Woj among the top coaches in the league before he even coaches his first game? Pretty bold

If having NCAA tournament talent and getting blown out by Robert Morris in the NIT and not even making the semis of a watered down BET isn't a failure of a season then we might as well go to the MAAC and battle it out with Iona and Manhattan every year
