St. John’s Commit Darrick Wood Leaves NIA Prep for Bridgton Academy

darrickwoodfull

Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv is reporting that St. John's commit Darrick Wood will transfer from Newark, New Jersey's NIA Prep to Bridgton Academy in Maine. The Washington D.C. native committed to the Red Storm two weeks ago, becoming the second player from the Class of 2012 to give his word to play for Steve Lavin and St. John's. NIA Prep has come under scrutiny recently after four graduating basketball players, including TCU commit Ryan Rhoomes and Towson-bound Kelvin Amayo, were ruled ineligible by the NCAA. In an article by Matthew Stanmyre of The Star-Ledger, written in June, Stanmyre characterized the school as, "a little bigger than a one-bedroom apartment and is carved from bottom-floor office space at the Robert Treat Hotel" … [Read more...]

chrismcculloughheadshot

Though former St. John's guard Dwight Hardy is now signed to play in Italy, the legacy he left in Queens could be a motivating factor in the college decision of Top 15 2014 forward Chris McCullough of Salisbury School (CT). “We’re good friends,” McCullough said of his fellow Bronx native. “I've known him since I was about seven. He's talked a lot told about how it's a good school and the coaches and fans support you all the way.” JohnnyJungle.com spoke to the sophomore in early July, a time when he called St. John’s his “dream school.” McCullough went on to have one of the most impressive July recruiting periods of any prospect in the country, bursting into the conversation when it comes to elite players in the Class … [Read more...]

NIA Prep Guard Darrick Wood Commits to St. John’s

Darrick Woodheadshot

On what was, otherwise, a quiet Saturday afternoon in August, St. John's got more news as to what their 2012 recruiting class would look like, as NIA Prep guard Darrick Wood committed to the Red Storm, via his Twitter page. "JUST COMMITTED TO ST. JOHNS UNIVERSITY. #stjbb," Wood said in a tweet, which was followed by a number of congratulatory responses from friends and family. Wood is an athletic scoring guard who also had offers on the table from Georgetown, Rutgers, Central Florida, and Seton Hall. With the decommitment of Jevon Thomas in late July, the doors opened for a commitment from Wood. He may lack strength, but makes up for that with creativity on the offensive end, with the ability to shoot and score from the mid-range, … [Read more...]

Among offers from Florida, Georgetown, Florida State, UCLA, and Maryland, the Red Storm have been in pursuit of the big man from The Sunshine State. stevelavinzimbio

ESPN.com and Scout.com have released their updated rankings for the Class of 2012, following the July live period. JohnnyJungle.com takes a look at where recruiting targets landed on the two lists. Kyle Anderson St. Anthony's (NJ) | 6'9", 215lb G/F | Fairview, NJ ESPN: #6 Overall | Scout.com: # 5 Overall Anderson is the highest-rated prospect that St. John's has pursued in the Steve Lavin era and the #1 priority in the Class of 2012. He is one of the most unique players in the country, a 6'9" point guard/forward who can create a match-up problem at four different positions. Despite his slowed pace at both ends of the floor, something that has earned him the nickname "Slo-Mo," he has learned how to be effective at that speed. … [Read more...]

A source tells JohnnyJungle.com that St. John’s is now in the mix for highly-rated Philadelphia forward Amile Jefferson. Jefferson, at 6’7”, 180 pounds, is an impressively versatile prospect, ranked 26th overall in the Class of 2012 by ESPN. According to the source, connections with incoming JUCO point guard Nurideen Lindsey and Red Storm target Kyle Anderson of St. Anthony’s (NJ) have made the Red Storm a possible destination for Jefferson. The Philadelphia-born Lindsey is a close friend of the Jefferson family through the close-knit basketball network in the city. Jefferson’s Friend’s Central (PA) is less than two miles away from Lindsey’s alma mater, Overbrook (PA). Kyle Anderson, who has developed a … [Read more...]

Katin Reinhardt of Mater Dei: Another California Prospect on St. John’s Radar

KatinReinhardt (2)

Things just move slower in California, especially on the basketball court. Problem is, that doesn’t quite suit rising senior guard Katin Reinhardt of Mater Dei (CA). “Out here, they run a lot of set offense and don’t push the ball as much as out East. I like to get out and run and push the ball and dunk,” he said. And, over the past few months, Reinhardt has caught the attention of high-major Division I coaches who wouldn’t mind adding a flashy, 6’5” guard to their up-tempo offense. Though born in California, Reinhardt and his family lived in New Jersey for six years, before moving back West, prior to his enrollment in high school. But, he still maintains roots on the East Coast, with his grandparents in New Jersey. … [Read more...]

According to multiple sources, 2012 point guard Jevon Thomas of Our Savior (NY) has decommitted from St. John’s. “We sat and spoke on the early decision and agreed there’s more out there to explore,” Thomas’ advisor Shawn “Wiz” Simms of Team B.A.S.I.C. told JohnnyJungle.com. “St. John’s is still on the top of his list, but he still feels he needs to take some visits and see what the world has to offer.” The 6’0” rising senior, who committed to play for Steve Lavin and the Red Storm in October 2011, was the only verbal commit for the program from the Class of 2012. Questions have been raised as to whether this decision could be related to St. John’s interest in 6’9” point forward Kyle Anderson of St. … [Read more...]

St. John’s Signee Maurice Harkless Cleared to Play By NCAA

harklessallamerican

According to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, incoming St. John’s forward Maurice Harkless has been cleared by the NCAA to play for the Red Storm. Harkless went on to confirm the report, via his Twitter page. The NCAA had been reviewing the 6’6” forward’s possible connection with St. John’s Director of Basketball Operations Moe Hicks, after questions were raised about Harkless’ two-tournament stint with the New York Gauchos AAU program. Moe Hicks served in an administrative role with the Gauchos program, never coaching Harkless, which led the NCAA to rule there was no violation of Bylaw 11.4.2, a regulation that bars institutions from hiring “an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any … [Read more...]

Steve Lavin’s top two priorities on the court have been to recruit top talent and to win basketball games. On Wednesday, news came in an exclusive video interview with JohnnyJungle.com at Hoop Group Elite Camp in Reading, PA that could begin paving the road far down the line, in the Class of 2014. There’s a good crowd at Madison Square Garden. I’d like to play at the Garden,” said McCullough, when comparing St. John’s to other Big East schools. “New York City is the big difference.” A host of other high-major schools … [Read more...]
