Support for Dave to Win the Volvo
The announcement of the Volvo’s Biggest Fan of the Big East is just 48 hours away. I’ve extended my reach beyond St. John’s and beyond the world wide web to inform people about Volvo and my passion of St. John’s basketball. From the local bank, US Post Office, and to the nurses of Jersey Shore Hospital anyone and everyone knows that I root for St. John’s Basketball. Now they know about the new “naughty” VolvoS60 too.
There is never a moment not seized to share what I do for St. John’s Basketball fans with JohnnyJungle.com and I’ve loved including Volvo into the mix this season. I’ve worked harder than anyone to make this site a daily destination for St. John’s fans. The countless nights of staying up till 4:00AM updating the site after games because I had to drive 2 hours home from New York and then going to work the next morning. People thought I was kidding when I said I got 4 hours of sleep a night during the season. (It’s 3:00AM now it’s early). Just like Volvo, St. John’s has such strong tradition of excellence and this year is all about rebirth. As Volvo is getting more “naughty” with the S60, St. John’s is having a renaissance of its own bring the buzz back to the New York city and the Big East. It’s been great participating with fellow Big East Alumni and some of them have taken notice to recognize myself as the Biggest Fan of the Big East.
Margot Inzetta– Cincinnati
I have been competing in the Biggest Fan of the Big East for several months now with tons of other great Big East fans! However, after months of tweeting, blogging, video uploading, etc., one competitor has really made the competition tough for me as he as stood about above all of the rest with his persistent support of the St John’s basketball team. Every game he is actively tweeting, engaging with others on twitter (including me, even when the bearcats beat St John’s early in the season), writing game recaps immediately following the game, and encouraging conversation from others to show and share their support for the St John’s basketball team. I Have really enjoyed following him this Big East basketball season and I really hope to see him win as the Biggest Fan of the Big East. Through his presence online and at the games (he travels far and wide to see his team compete live), he has proven that he by far is the biggest fan and supporter of his basketball team.
Matthew Ryter– Providence
Its been a pleasure getting to know Dave through this challenge. Every time I log onto twitter it seems like Dave has another article up on his site or has something to say about the games being played the previous night. Seriously I had to stop following him on twitter for awhile. He works his tail off for his site and I think it shows.
Like the run his Johnnies are having this year I think it would only be fitting that he won this competition and got to watch his alma mater on their home floor in the worlds most famous arena.
Brian Ewart– Villanova
Dave has clearly been the Biggest Fan from the beginning to the very end of this contest. The work that he puts into JohnnyJungle.com is outstanding and its clear the St. John’s basketball community is impacted by his passion. I’ve really enjoyed engaging with Dave on twitter daily exchanging tweets about St. Johns, Villanova, Big East, and beyond.
Dave and I actually took a road trip to Philly together to see St. John’s play Villanova at Wells Fargo Center. Dave was a great sport tailgating in the parking lot filled with the Nova Nation. Who else besides the Biggest Fan of the Big East would do that? Dave deserves to be named the Biggest Fan of the Big East and I truly hope he wins.
Dan Daitchman– Marquette
I was surfing MUScoop.com, the most popular message board for Marquette basketball fans, one day and saw that Dave had posted there. He’s actually been posting there for over 3 years. He gave Marquette fans some insight on St. John’s and he even provided some information on our recruits. What opposing fan goes to another team’s board and posts regularly there?
Dave also did a Q&A on my blog prior to St. John’s playing Marquette which was very informative to my readers. I’ve really enjoyed tweeting with Dave throughout the season and hope that he gets picked by Volvo to be the Biggest Fan of the Big East. He’s really shown to me that he is.
Ashley Kanoff– Pittsburgh
It’s been so much fun participating in the Big East contest with Dave. He tweets to me about the Pittsburgh Zoo (student section) during their games and its been fun seeing how much of an impact he has on St. John’s fans. They interact with him so much and brings so much more school spirit to St. John’s.
His site is awesome and it really shows how much passion he has towards Big East basketball and I think Dave should be named the Biggest Fan of the Big East. I hope to see Dave in the Vovlo he deserves it!
Matt Whitfield– West Virginia
Dave Krupinski is clearly a Big East Basketball FANATIC! Despite being only several years out of college Dave operates the successful Johnny Jungle website. Clearly Dave is passionate about St. John’s basketball. In my eye Dave deserves to be named the biggest fan in the Volvo Biggest Big East Fan campaign.
Laurel Mills– Georgetown
Dave Krupinski isn’t lying when he says that he’s the sixth man on the St. John’s basketball team. The guy even follows high school games to know what the recruiting classes are going to look like. Also based on his Twitter habits, I’m pretty sure he’s telling the truth about only sleeping four hours a night, too. I think he just might be the true Biggest Fan of the Big East.
Celena Gill – Rutgers
It was great meeting Dave at the Big East Media Day. He has been a dedicated and ardent St’ John’s fan. If the contest were based on pure fan loyalty, Dave would be the easy winner. St. John’s basketball fans are just a click away from the latest updates and news because of Dave’s persistence and dedication. He truly deserves to be named the Biggest Fan of the Big East!
Jenna Broughton– South Florida
There is no doubt that Dave is a Big East fan! Throughout the entire Volvo Big East challenge he has been completely committed to both his team and the conference. Moreover, his undying devotion is further displayed by the effort he puts into JohnnyJungle.com where he has chronicled the entire basketball season. This type of spirit shows that he just may be the Biggest Big East fan!

Volvo It Was All A Dream
I used to read word up magazine… Those Juicy lyrics can be heard out of the mouths of any New Yorker from the late rapper Notorious BIG. It has been a dream this season. Before the season started I was approached to participate in a promotion involving the Big East Conference and Volvo Cars to compete against 15 other Big East Alumni to be honored as the “Biggest Fan of the Big East.”
In 2007, JohnnyJungle.com was born in an effort to rekindle and start new tradition for St. John’s students, alumni, and fans. Each and every year JohnnyJungle.com has seen more recognition from fans as well as basketball professionals. The effort to move St. John’s out of the “dark ages” and back to prominence was gradual.
Fast forward to 2011 and with the hire of Steve Lavin as the new head coach there was new hope and belief for the Red Storm faithful. Just like the 10 seniors on this St. John’s roster, I had everything to prove this season participating against 15 peers in the Volvo contest.
The contest would consist of 6 written challenges as well as fan voting to determine the winner. Each participant would attend Big East Media day and go back to their school to attend a game and have the new “naughty” VolvoS60 for the weekend.
Attending Big East Media day was a complete joy. I was fascinated seeing how various members of the media interacted with coaches and players and also to meet the 15 people who represented the other schools. I really had a great time bonding with my peers and talking some hoops with people from all over the country. It has been awesome tweeting with these people all season long and developing friendships that I will cherish for a lifetime. I’ve gone to basketball games with Brian (Villanova), I’ve done a UStream show with Jonathan (DePaul), and got DC traffic advice from Laurel (Georgetown). I would have never had the opportunity to meet such great people if it wasn’t for Volvo.
Kevin Clark was also very happy about the VolvoS60. You know #42? No seriously you know who he is because he was honored for his off the court excellence.
Volvo decided to send me back to school to see St. John’s take on the defending National Champions Duke University. Naturally I had some things I wanted to do heading back to my old stomping grounds. I was able to fly in my best friend and roommate from St. John’s to see the game with me too. St. John’s showed the country who the dukes of midtown really were beating the Blue Devils 93-78.
It was glorious! Not to forget I was able to take a road trip in the new naughty VolvoS60 from the Jersey Shore to un-plowed streets of New York City. I was thoroughly impressed with the VolvoS60 which I picked up from my local Volvo dealership, Garden State Volvo.
I obviously knew a great deal about Volvo being an owner of a 200k mile 1993 Volvo 240 wagon and from reading Volvo’s website but wow you don’t know what you’re missing until you get behind the wheel. I firmly believe this car is more sophisticated than the first space shuttle with it’s voice command controls to pedestrian and blind spot sensors (which was extremely helpful in Manhattan).
The car was extremely powerful yet never lost comfort while driving and turning. The handle on the car was as crisp as a Dwight Hardy jump shot. I loved syncing my phone to the bluetooth which enabled my entire ipod playlist, phonebook, and media to be played through the navigation system all via voice on control so my hands never had to leave the wheel. The built in navigation system received satellite updates for traffic which was God sent driving through the 5 boroughs of New York.
This has truly been a once and a lifetime opportunity that St. John’s fans, friends, family, and I will never forget. The out pour of support from the St. John’s fans and my local community has been outstanding. The entire Jersey Shore hospital nursing staff, my barber shop, deli owner, local banks, and Toms River post office have all been voting for me. Its amazing how all these offline connections have brought awareness online to the Volvo S60 and St. John’s Basketball.
I was disappointed in the weather and city parking because I wasn’t able to drive the Volvo as much as I wanted to over my weekend back at school. However I definitely got more experience behind the wheel than perhaps any of my peers. I hit a large pot hole at highway speed which blew my tire to pieces however I was easily able to keep steady control of the car to pull over to the side of the road in the New York traffic. So I can tell you first hand that all that safety talk isn’t a gimmick. Volvo’s roadside assistance program delivered me back to safety. So thanks Volvo again for saving yet another life!
Since that Duke game, St. John’s has been on an unbelievable run which has kept the St. John’s coaching staff wearing the same coaches vs cancer white sneakers on with their suits. While they have their superstitions, I have mine and it’s because of Volvo. Perhaps it’s destiny coming together as St. John’s gains national notoriety so does Volvo for their new “naughty” S60 line of cars. It’s St. John’s year! The missing piece is who is the Biggest Fan of the Big East? So far the people say it’s me. Hopefully Volvo does too.

Shot Heard Around the World
St. John’s Dwight Hardy hit a near impossible angle shot along the baseline with 1.2 seconds left to give the Red Storm a 1 point lead over No. 4 Pittsburgh. Here is a look from the fan’s perspective from different areas of the arena. If you know of other videos out there on YouTube let us know and we’ll put them in
Preparation On the Court & On the Road
Prepare
[pri-pair] – Verb
To put in proper condition or readiness.
You’ve probably heard it 1,000 times. Practice makes perfect. Whether it’s a game, a test, interview, or driving your car preparation leads to better results.
A week ago I was given a new naughty VolvoS60 to drive around snowy and salty Manhattan in route to the St. John’s vs Duke game. I knew how important it would be to be prepared for anything the weather had to throw at me.
I immediately took the car to PJ’s Car Wash to rid the exterior of salt, clean the windows and wiper blades, and top off the washer fluid. They also dusted and wiped down the interior too. Love those guys.
I was ready for my trip being able to see clearly out of my mirrors and windows to in sure safety. Having a clean interior is also important for a better driving experience. It’s a big reason why my 1993 Volvo 240 that has 200k miles still looks brand new (It’s still buried under snow pictures coming soon).
In the game of basketball you train, you practice, and you study film to perform at higher levels.
When caring for your car you check the oil, fluids, air pressure to drive at peak performance.
A part of training is recovery. Getting proper rest and ice after practice or weight room session. You do this to take care of your body and to avoid injury.
When driving you change the oil to make sure your engine is running clean. This might be one of the most overlooked aspects of maintaining a car and one of the easiest things to do.
Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game. Nobody likes being injured, sitting out, or spending money on medical bills.
Fortunately for Volvo drivers all S60’s come with a 5 year warranty plan. So for the first 5 years if anything were to happen to your Volvo they’ll fix it free of charge.
You can certainly have some fun with taking care of your car too.
Getting better at your game is a lot of hard work however its still the game you love and should have fun playing. The same applies to your which should include a window sticker from your Alma Mater and perhaps even a license plate frame or personalized license plate if available in your state (check with your local DMV).
As a player prepares for his/her game day and they put in the hard work into their games then they will be a winner. If you drive a new naughty VolvoS60 you’re an instant national champion.
