It seems like we have written off St. John’s at least 4 or 5 times already this season, yet they are somehow still mathematically alive in the race for the 12th and final spot in the Big East Tournament. After a gritty, come from behind victory over Seton Hall on Senior Night, the Johnnies continue to live on a prayer.
January 12th, 2008. This date could prove to haunt the players and fans of the Red Storm until next season. On an ordinary Saturday afternoon in Jamaica, the Blue Demons of DePaul came away with a 60-54 win over the Johnnies. In the 2nd half of this game, St. John’s allowed DePaul to go on an inexcusable 16-0 run. Ironically, this game turned out to be the beginning of the end in terms of the fans patience with the head coach. Much of the talk after the game was about the substitution patterns and lack of in game coaching by the leader of the Storm. Of course this talk continued throughout the season, growing more and more after each loss. At the time, the defeat left St. John’s with a record of 1-3 in the Big East, while improving DePaul to 3-1 in conference. Exactly 2 months later, this game might turn out to be the deciding factor into which team is playing in the Big East Tournament come March 12th. If St. John’s would have come away with a victory on that early winter day, they would be sitting pretty at 6-10 in conference and essentially a 2 game lead over both DePaul and Providence with 2 games to go. Instead they enter Wednesday’s contest at South Bend in a 3 way tie with DePaul and Providence for 12th in the conference. The schedule for each team is as follows:
DePaul (5-11) – 3/06 @ Cincinnati, 3/09 @ Pittsburgh
St. John’s (5-11) – 3/05 @ Notre Dame, 3/08 West Virginia
Providence (5-11) – 3/06 Connecticut, 3/08 Villanova
The easiest path to MSG for the Johnnies would be to have DePaul lose out, and for the Redmen to win one game. As long as St. John’s keeps pace with PC they will be ahead of the Friars because of their victory over them on February 9th. They don’t have any advantage in a 3 way tie or a tie with DePaul.
St. John’s is clearly the underdog coming into Wednesday’s contest against Notre Dame. The Irish are currently ranked #19 in the country and are in the middle of a 36 game winning streak on their home court, including 17 straight Big East home victories (2nd longest in league history). Not to mention the probable Player of the Year in the Big East, Luke Harangody, wears the colors of the Fighting Irish. So while it seems unlikely the Johnnies can go into South Bend and steal one from the Irish, just try and remember the sweet stroke of Larry Wright’s game winner from last season. That shot helped St. John’s take down #21 Notre Dame at the Garden a year ago. I know it’s March but maybe the luck of the Irish can be put on hold, at least until after Wednesday.
HEY, YOU NEVER KNOW.
