New offer for 6'10 Kofi Cockburn. St. John's offers him at their elite camp on Wednesday per Karriem Meminger #sjubb
-
I've heard from multiple guys Cockburn is really difficult to deal with.
-
Thanks for sharing about a kid that is in ninth grade and new to this country
Do you ever think that maybe he is having a hard time adjusting this country maybe that's the reason

I've heard from multiple guys Cockburn is really difficult to deal with.
True but if you get a prescribed ointment, it can be managed.

I know I'm late but Father recently passed also this month. Kids playing at a high level through a lot of adversity.

Sorry for not being clear guys but my dad is still alive and kicking. Kofi's father passed away earlier this month. Appreciate the love tho. Hard not to love the Guys in the jungle!!

6'11" 4 Star Kofi Cockburn'19 saids he is hearing a lot from St. John's & UConn. Seton Hall, Rutgers involved. #SNYInvitational
-
He may be "hard to deal with" but let me provide a glimpse from yesterday which shows he has a big heart and a class act - My friend and I were sitting across the aisle from him. My friend's son (5 year old) who unfortunately has some challenges at on more than one occasion ran across the aisle sat down next to Kofi and started to hit him on his leg several times. Kofi understood and reacted with a big smile and engaged with the little boy on several occasions.
I for one am a big Kofi fan.

So we can blame your friend's son with Kofi doesn't come here? ;)
-
Seems like folks have different experiences with Cockburn. Not as difficult to some but obviously rubs others the wrong way.
-
Would be surprised is we got a recruit from Christ the King

Yeah, hear there is tension in that relationship.
-
Why? Coach was tight with Slice?
-
Why? Coach was tight with Slice?
Bridges burned
-
Last time CTK heard from St Johns.?
-
Oscar Delarosa? Not too long ago. Not sure if Coach A pushed Rawle to us. He was a buddy of Slice I know. Not pointing fingers and no idea who there is to blame if there is a rift but city coaches should have much respect for our head coach.
-
Coach Arbs (who I never particularly cared for as a student of CTK, always had that kind of douchebag vibe and always was flirting w the senior girls even though he is married to another teacher at the school) posted on Twitter the other day that SJU doesn't come around anymore after Slice left and that they are the ones who stopped Rawle and Jose Alvarado from coming or something to that effect. Dude will never be happy with SJU not being at their gym everyday. And this all happened before Kofi came to the game on Sunday though so who knows.
-
It's too bad because this kid is a beast. He'll be borderline 5 star by sr year. Can't teach that kinda size.
-
Like with Lavin and his early recruiting success, in order keep getting top talent you have to show that your program is working. We'll start to get the kids who only consider good programs once we look like one of them.

Per Jerry Meyer:
2019 big man Kofi Cockburn was dominant at the #pangosaacamp
-
More from Jerry Meyer:
Not only is Cockburn a physically dominating force, he has a skilled game to go along with his brute power. Arguably the top performing big man in the camp, Cockburn showed touch around the basket, rebounded with a passion and was good in the open court. And to top it all off, he showed some shooting range as well.

Hate saying this but with Ewing Gtown I think we will be playing from behind

Well we can hope G'Town gets an even better C and leaves Cockburn for us. There is also Igiehon so hopefully Ewing can't get them all.

Well I was referring to Kofi being of Jamaican descent like Ewing as well as star big man.
As for Aiden maybe the Mullin Irish connection works

Saw Kofi this spring and although he is absolutely huge he didnt overly impress me. Aiden from the tape looks like the better prospect IMO.

Kofi Cockburn: One of the revelations of the EYBL season nationally has been the rapid development of 6'11" rising junior Kofi Cockburn, who averaged a near double-double for the RENs. The exceptionally strong Jamaican native is a major challenge to contain in the low-post. His improved skill-level and passing out of double-teams make him even more of an overall offensive threat. Cockburn was, perhaps, the best defensive rebounder in attendance. He has the size and frame to be an instant-impact freshman. The trajectory of his development in his two years in America has been the most impressive aspect of his ascent. The keys for the Christ the King rising junior will be that he tightens his physique, diversify his low-post game, and develop a semblance of a face-up game in the coming years. Cockburn has earned offers from Indiana, UCLA, Syracuse, Miami, Cal, St. John's, LSU, Oregon, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Illinois, Providence, Creighton, Georgia Tech, and Cincinnati as well as interest from Duke and Kentucky.

I don't see it honestly. I love the size, but I don't see a kid that is ranked #34 nationally. I see a kid that is raw and not overly athletic. For us that is fine. Get him 8-12 minutes as a frosh and more if he can defend, rebound, and set good sceeens.

If there is a 6-11 high school junior that isn't raw and overly athletic he'd be down Kentucky and Duke at this point and would be a one and done lottery pick

The kid isn't Kevin Love, but he's a pure inside player. He's a total bull in there and would be a problem for other teams. Much like Angel Delgado, he isn't gonna wander outside too much. Great size and is a good leaper for that size unlike Delgado. He isn't a gazelle in the open court like Bagley of Duke, but his size and strength, coupled with big hands and ability to finish inside will cause matchup trouble for others. Almost nobody is gonna push him out of the paint. Would be a great pickup for us because of his size regardless of his raw skill set.

He doesn't move well. It stands out. I'm fine with that...I wish we had a kid like Sean O'Mara of Xavier. I just don't see a top 40-50 talent at all. I don't think comparisons to Delgado are fair or accurate. Delgado moved and used his body so well I thought he was 6'6 or 6'7.

Difference is that this kid is even bigger than Delgado and has real leaping ability for a guy his size. Delgado can barely jump over a coke can. This kid can somehow get up there. I think his footwork will improve. Hess still quite new to the game. He’s dominant size-wise and not slow. Just not a gazelle. I'd add, his motor is also very good for a big guy. He works hard inside. I think he'd be a fantastic recruit for us overall. All teams would have to respect him inside. He'll rebound and dunk all day.

Marillac vs MCNPA, Mr. Negativity vs Mr. Positivity. :) Truth probably lies somewhere in-between but no doubt he should be a take and a recruit we should be happy to get as his floor would be a golem and what team at our level can't use one of those on the roster.

Watch the videos. He's no golem. He's like King Kong down low. Not a stiff. Like I said, not a gazelle, but opponents aren't gonna move him from the paint. He's also still new to the game so upside should be there. Delgado kills it for SHU and this kid is bigger and very young.

Kofi relatively new to the game also.

We'd be lucky to get this kid. Definitely not a stiff and improving a lot.
-
Anybody who doesn't think this kid is good simply doesn't know how basketball works at this level. I remember when people on this board didn't think Khadeen Carrington was good enough to play here
-
Kofi relatively new to the game also.
Not skinny enough for St. John's. We cannot afford to feed him. ;)
-
I’d take him in a heart beat.
-
I was at Jefferson vs CTK last weekend and Kofi is savage. Pretty good touch too. Honestly think he'll be blue blood bound.

Need to win next year to have any shot at kids like him. Otherwise the blue bloods will sweep him up in no time.

Kofi is a rare kid today who prefers to stay home is my sense.
-
Absolute man child and terribly underrated. He routinely ate Moses for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This kid will be a 1st round pick. To boot, I hope this is indirectly putting us in a good early position with Cisse, who will be the talk of the city in due time.

By then probably will do away with one and done rule and Cisse won't even go to college.

Kofi Cockburn’19 of @ctkroyals & @NYRhoops measured in with a 7’5” wingspan. He demonstrated his increased ability to face-up consistently as well as playing consistently above the rim in the low-post. @TheAthleticCBB

Hope we can lock him up before he really blows up.

This is a bigger potential recruit than people realize for SJU. He’s local and a monster inside. Raw, sure, but physically a guy that almost nobody will be able to handle even at the college level. I hope we can pull this off... we are due for a break and to have a big guy with his physical strength and ability would be a big leg up..

Happened when they saw him in Dallas this weekend. Good thing SJU was too busy to begin Dallas....:)

In as good a position with Kofi as you would hope for. This stuff is fluid, but like where we are at this juncture.

I always thought we had to garner a commitment from him by the end of the summer or early fall. Otherwise, he may wait for those "blue blood" offers and take his recruitment to spring of '19.

Hope is the often repeated notion Kofi is a kid who wants to stay home. Obviously a tough get.

Maybe our luck might change if we change the name of the team from Red Storm to Blue Storm. Lol
-
Bottom line is that we need to win. Put together a string of good years, NCAA Tournament appearances... that being said I’m not sure that’ll be enough. Just look at Seton Hall. Maybe winning plus a Hall of Famer could put us over the top though. As a long time fan that’s what I’m hoping for.

I've been very critical of this staff in the past especially when it comes to their ability to recruit hs players. However, I'm incredibly impressed with the recruiting efforts since the mustapha commit. Having Scottie Lewis, Artest and Kofi all on campus for unofficials in the matter of a few weeks is great work. Now just need a few solid recruits to commit.

With Kofi Cockburn also leaving Christ the King to join Cole Anthony, formerly of Molloy at Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson,Va.) I think Oak Hill now should be the favorite to win the CHSAA this year! lol

If Kofi is willing to go to Virginia for his last year of "high school" I doubt the staying close to home for college is going to be much of a factor
-
#2 & #23 leaving the CHSAA - sad to see...

Malloy tuition is between $9K and $10; Oak Hill with fees is $40K plus transportation for parents to visit and kids to come home. Don't see an economic advantage of going to Oak Hill as kids get a free college ride to college of choice regardless of which school they are in. Seems like something is rotten in Denmark on this deal economically unless..........

Often, these, kids are getting a sizeable discount/financial aid for athletic scholarship. In some cases, it also helps a school increase their geographic and racial diversity. Not much different than private college admissions.

Come on man.. Oak Hill is a basketball factory and has been for decades... these kids don't pay much, if anything, to go there..
Oak Hill is not looking to change their geographic reach or diversity dynamic..

Not coming here. Maybe when he's disgruntled in a year or 2 then we can land him.

He may be SJU's last best chance at landing a big time recruit.
But I wouldn't count on it.

He is priority #1.
All attention should be sent his way all Winter long.
Kofi or 2019 bust.
Perfect fit for our immediate needs. Pair him next to Keita, fill out the rest of the class with wings and guards.
-
Highly unlikely. Best shot is precious.

Down to 5 with St. John's, UConn, Illinois, Pitt, and Kansas!
-
It’s going to be tough to beat Kansas
-
May not get Kofi but will have a legit shot with other 4/5 stars if we keep winning a lot this year which is a welcome change around here.
-
I remain an optimist until the bottom falls out—-like it usually does.
-
Per espn - has committed to Illinois.
-
Hahaha Illinois.
Uh, ok
Just pay these kids already
-
We don't need him.
-
When he’s ready to transfer home, we’ll be ready.

Are you suggesting that a school well known for not paying players is suddenly paying players?
-
We don't need him.
What makes you say that?

Maybe modern day but under Lou Henson they got put on probation for just that.
-
Antingua earning his keep, home run hire for Brad Underwood, who's up against it (18-29) in Champaign.
-
No surprise here as we just landed two bigs but a HS potential 5 would have been nice.
-
Pretty sure he committed to the worst team in the Big 10 for academic reasons.

Does seem strange for him tp choose Illinois but FWIW was told by a former college coach that the Illini head coach Brad Underwood is a good one who got there last year from S.F. Austin where he did a great job.

Underwood coached at Oklahoma St for a year after Austin and is 18-29 at Illinois and Illinois hasn't had a player make the NBA since Dee Brown 15 years ago. I $u$pect this was not a basketball decision.

Antingua was coach Cals bag man for years. That's what he does.

That’s not accurate. Dee Brown is not the last Illini player to make the NBA.

Eric Gordon choosing Indiana cost Bruce Weber his job. Biggest mistake they’ve made in a long time.

It’s a Big Ten school. Big Ten schools get elite players. Even the poor teams do.
-
YUP--Illini got that stud Adonis De La Rosa! Maybe Kofi want s to follow him (he'll have to look better by comparison). ;)

Second to last then. The point remains.

4th to last, but I sorta get your point.

Yes, it seems that way so far, but by and large the Big Ten gets big names. Always has.
Corey Sanders was ranked around 50 nationally. IDK where the rest of the kids on their current team were ranked, but RU does occasionally get a top 100 kid. Kind of like us.
