Title: THURSDAY NIGHT'S GAME: Brown Paper Bags
Post by: TRabinowitz on February 08, 2010, 07:29:10 PM
Hey everyone,

I will be at the game on Thursday night vs. Louisville.

I was doing some thinking and decided it's time to organize a bit and rally the troops. I will be bringing a brown paper bag to the game with "FIRE NORM" written in big letters with a marker. IF we are losing by a good amount or its coming down the stretch and losing is inevitable, I will most definitely put it on and stand up and make my voice heard.

I think it would be a great idea if a BUNCH of us are doing this. Anyone game for this?

I would be so down if we got a big group to do it.

If someone wants to give me a couple tickets I'd do it.

Don't ask me why or to explain how. But i think St.John's actually wins on thurs.  Just a gut feeling.  Norm is due for his once a year win over a team he shouldn't beat.  Louisville isn't all that.

Visual, should appear well, and just after the Saints will will remind people of fans who cheer for a team that can't help but to lose. Sucks for the players to see that but it's better than the chants.  Nice idea.

Draw a few plays on the bags, especially if we see a 1-3-1 zone.

LOL Norm would DEFINITELY be looking back into the crowd and studying our bags if we did that.

You should write

AIN'T JOHN'S

You have a better chance of getting on air and security will give you a little more leeway.

Fire Norm and you will have 5 seconds until security comes.

One more thing.  If you are serious you should bring a bunch in and hand out.  Otherwise, it will be futile

already ahead of you on it.  ive spoken to a prominent member of the st. johns student section about bringing a bunch of bags to hand out to students.  hes still deciding whether to do it or not.

I'm actually not too sure about this plan.  I mean chanting for Norm's head is one thing but bags over all of the players classmate's heads is a little bit of a slap in the face to the kids on the floor more than the coach and we all know it's not the players fault.  Nonetheless, if someone in the student section hands out paper bags, I will put one over my head.
Title: Pitino loves Brown Paper Bags
Post by: redstormhoopsfan on February 09, 2010, 03:39:49 PM

Aren’t you concerned that the brown paper bags will confuse Pitino?

Do you remember what Karen Sypher looked like?
He may think the bags are for him.

I'd rather see the paper bags than the chants. I'll even sponsor a brown bag night.

Paper bags are an insult to the players. They will be offended and rightfully so.  I say chant away. This is on Norm,  not the kids.  A grown man, who choses to coach , should be able to withstand calls for his job.  Its part of the deal.

Pitino did a lot better than Steve Philips though.  Good God man!

Youre right, I think the bags reflect the play on the court, which inturn would reflect the players. I dont know what the answer is, but this just doesnt seem right

I appreciate everyones input.  I think we need to PROPERLY phrase what we write on the bags so we get the point across that we are protesting the COACH and ADMINISTRATION, not the PLAYERS.

as i said in my original post, i will ONLY wear the bag if we are getting blown out or if it becomes  clear down the stretch of the game that we are losing.  i will still be rooting for us, and the one thing i DONT want is to become a sideshow during a game that we have a chance to win.

OK, here’s a few great ideas to write on your bags:

Norm sucks…
It wasn’t you that just missed that dunk!

Norm sucks…
It wasn’t you who fouled their midget 45 feet from the basket?

Norm sucks…
It wasn’t you who drove into three defenders who were 12+” taller than you?

Seriously, the coaching may be lacking, but the execution has been even worse. My feeling is that it’s a team effort, win or lose.

We win together, or we lose together.

There certainly is enough blame to go around here.  However, in sports, the coach is going to be the one who takes the hit.     This is how it works.  Sorry Norm.

RSHF, Norm recruited em.

It's on Norm.  The spin has gotten ridiculous.  I understand Norm is a nice guy and you're friendly with him, but it's time for us to STAND UP for our program.  Writing on message boards isn't enough.  We need to be seen and be heard.

ok. ive gotten to the point where i dont care if the players get offended.

they've given up and theyre not committed.

ive heard things from numerous people about seeing basketball players at traditions [or other bars/clubs] after 1am, when there is a game at noon the next day. [the nova game is the one specific time i remember hearing this]

ps: if my night class gets cancelled tomorrow night, ill be at the game.
and ill be glad to wear a brown paper bag.

i will TRY and buy some in NYC prior to the game (and bring markers as well), but you should try and locate your own just in case i cant.

I don't see anything wrong with paper bags, chants about the coach's job status, signs, t-shirts or any other expressions of free speech as long as they don't involve profanity or potentially hazardous rhetoric.

"Blank must go"/"Fire blank" and paperbags on fans heads both have a long history and are well established and accepted parlance in the sports arena.

These "kids" are in their 20's (like myself and many of you).  They get a $130,000 education for free, get plenty of girls, attention, etc.  They can handle fans wearing paper bags on their heads.  You don't just sign up for the good when you play a college sport.  You have to expect a little negative attention from time to time.

Besides, they all know it is for the coach.  They are not blind to it.  Heck, I'm sure at lest 1/3 of the roster would welcome it.  They want to win.

I suggest bringing signs today!  Maybe FATHER HARRY, THE STATS DON'T LIE:  and then have Norm's record.

Or Norm Roberts' BE RECORD:  XX-XXX  (WORST IN BE HISTORY)

or

BRING BACK JARVIS (imagine how THAT would go over with Fr. harry ha ha ha)

It's good b/c obv....they're play L-ville. And secondly, you can do it throughout the game, SJU doesn't necessarily have to be losing to do it.

As promised, I did bring a brown paper bag (as boooooooooothe, because i also gave him a bunch of extra bags for the student section along with markers & scissors).

however, as also promised, i didnt wear the bag.  im just glad we WON.  i will be bringing said bag to the other sju games i attend this year, however.

I’m sure you got this from the same source as PMG’s search committee rumor but…

Does that mean that 2/3 of the roster wants to lose?
As Yogi would say, “what does the other half want?"

I know what you promised, but since this is not an attack against the players, or at least not against the 1/3 of the team who wants a new coach (see above), why exactly didn’t you put a bag over it?

Does this signal that Norm doesn’t suck?
Do you want Norm extended for another five years?
The team won, but Norm still coached them.

I’m confused with your indecision to make a decision.

I didn't want to become a sideshow in a game that we were winning or had a chance to win.  I still think Norm sucks and I still want him gone.  It's about showing respect for the players during the game at hand and not being a distraction.  Unlike some fans, I'm still rooting for this team to win even though I want the coach fired.

As I said, if it came down to a situation where the game was already lost, it wouldn't matter because the players had already lost it.  I would wear the bag.
