Title: D'Angelo Harrison - SG - Dulles High School - Fort Bend, TX - ST. JOHN'S
Post by: mjdinkins on August 15, 2010, 10:04:08 PM
Over the past couple of weeks, quite a few players have taken unofficial visits to check out the campus of St. John's University and a couple more visits are on the horizon. (Photo: D'Angelo Harrison)

He's expected to visit later this month.

Per Zags....

D’Angelo Harrison, a four-star combo guard from Fort Bend (Texas) Dulles, is focusing on five schools at this point.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Harrison listed Texas A&M, Marquette, Baylor, Oklahoma State and St. John’s.

Harrison will visit St. John’s unofficially Aug. 30 after attending a Five-Star Camp in New York area.

Asked what he knew about St. John’s, Harrison said, “I’ll see when I get up there. I’ll know more.”

Per Scout (via Moose on Redmen.com)....  Harrison is down to 4 schools.

Harrison claimed to make over 45 percent of his threes as a junior and that sounds about right to us. During the spring and summer, it became commonplace for him to dump 40 plus points on occasion.
His scoring touch and desire to play the point long term has the interest of Oklahoma State, Baylor, Marquette and St. Johns. Hell visit Oklahoma State Sept. 4, Baylor Sept. 11 and St. Johns unofficially this weekend.

Harrison is inching closer to a decision, but hes not quite there yet and thats what the visits are for. I have to re-evaluate and investigate all the schools again to see whats the best fit for everybody.

On Redmen, Moose mentioned that Buzz Williams offered him the chance to run the team.  I don't know how that can be with Vander Blue and Reggis Smith coming in - Vander, at least, is supposed to be a top-50 prospect. Harsh as it is (for me) to say, he can look at St. John's and think, "I could be the starting PG for this team."

Lol. Not just Scout's.
Ask him about "his" Harrison Barnes story

He is very good at producing a 250-1000 word story off of a 4 word text reply from a 16 year old. If they ever force him to change the title of his eponymous site, Zagsblog, he ought to change it to something more like Said By Text, a phrase which seems to appear in nearly every article.

His very talented AAU teammate, Nash, has favored Baylor (ethical Drew) and Oklahoma State (Pickens) for quite some time.

Per Zagsblog....  "D’ANGELO HARRISON DOWN TO THREE"

D’Angelo Harrison is down to three schools after Monday’s unofficial visit to St. John’s.

“Marquette, Baylor and St. John’s,” he said Tuesday night by text.

As for the St. John’s visit, Harrison said, “I liked it.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Harrison had previously listed Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.

He was originally supposed to visit Oklahoma State this week, but asked if that was still the case, he said, “No.”

We're not actually the "fourth team" on his list.  We're the fourth and last team Harrison will speak to prior to committing.

St. John’s is the fourth team on his list. The Red Storm are expected in for a visit next week with Harrison and his family. While on the East Coast for the recent 5-Star NY Super Session, Harrison took an unofficial visit to St. John’s.

Someone once did an informal poll and it was interesting to hear coaches reactions to when they'd prefer to get an official visit. Almost all wanted either the first or the last visit.

Rivals article:

D'Angelo Harrison  tries to cut through as much of the recruiting pitch as he can when visiting schools and attempts to let the coaches know what he's looking for, find out what realistic expectations they have for him and figure out which school will be the best fit.

"I tell them to not BS me and I want to know if I'm going to be able to play and do what I do or if I'm going to be a role player," Harrison said. "A lot of the schools want me to do what I've been doing this summer.

"It's really important to me. I want to be on the court right away. I'm not going to say give me the spot but I want to compete for a spot as a freshman and play at the highest level possible."

More about Ok State, in homes with Oklahoma State, Baylor, St. John's and Marquette, and he will visit St. John's but doesn't have a date yet.

Basically, there is no mention of Marquette in this article.  So, I'm not sure Harrison is gonna make a visit to Marquette on the 15th of this month or not.

Hopefully, he decides to attend the Johnnies "Midnight Madness" on that particular date.

I'm not sure, whether there was an error or not with Harrison's latest Rivals.com interview.... But, there was no mention of Marquette.  It also seemed like he was also in the process of changing his visit date to St. John's.

Possibly, the 15th?

Been a long time since we had a great scoring guard. We've needed that big basket so often, and there was never anyone to take it.

Some of you folk are jumping the gun.  Harrison has played his recruitment close to the vest all spring and summer.  Let's wait until 5pm on Thursday to see where he's going to attend school.

By the way, I don't believe no one is sure who is suppose to attend our "Midnight Madness" on Friday.

I hope we're lucky (and skillful) enough to garner a verbal from Harrison on Thursday.  If, we do then we'll have us a bonafide shooter and scorer.  Harrison and possibly, a guy like Pelle would be icing on the cake to this recruiting class.

We'd have us a defensive presence in the middle (and an athletic freak) in Pelle and a knockdown shooter and big-time scorer in Harrison.  Add those two kids, to go along with Sampson, Harkless, Garrett, Lindsey, Pointer, Harris and God's Gift and you have the makings of very dangerous unit.

Pelle and Harrison are the potential wild cards of this class.

This is the one, folks.  He is going to be a dandy!  Think Scottie Reynolds.   Harrison at the 2, Harkless at the 3, Sampson at the 4....wow....three guys that can stroke it...handle it...score in a variety of ways.  Bring in Garrett to be the stopper defensively and Lindsey and Polee to bring energy and points.  Stith will be the "pure point."

We need to get a STUD PG in 2012. I haven't seen Jevon Thomas...is he Eric Barkley good?

Marillac - you've seen D'Angelo? Scottie Reynolds is a big comparison - can Harrison draw fouls? He always looks skinny, and I didn't know he was physical.  Love his shooting ability.

And Jevon Thomas needs some video publicity, for sure.

It would be awesome to get him (especially over Marquette and Baylor). My fingers are crossed.

I've read that he Harrison is known to draw fouls whenever he decides to attack the basket.  Remember, players have to respect his jumper and it allows him to go to the basket when need to.

Hopefully, we're able to nab Harrison on Thursday.

By the way, you forgot about Oklahoma State, peter.

A recruiting insider with close knowledge of Harrison’s recruitment tells NBE today that the battle for the #21 player in the Class of 2011 is a “dog fight” with four programs aggressively pursuing the 6-foot-3 scoring machine.

“Oklahoma State [is making a] strong push of late,” the source tells NBE today, “Baylor is local appeal [and] Marquette has been involved the longest.”

The fourth school involvled is St. John’s who has new head coach Steve Lavin in Texas today to make an in-home visit with Harrison in hoping to sway another blue-chip prospect in his efforts to revitalize the SJU program.

According to NBE’s source, St. John’s has a “strong chance” in this recruiting battle and are selling Harrison and the people close to him a comprehensive list of advantages in coming to New York City for his college career. These advantages include playing in the Big Apple with Madison Square Garden as the home court in the Big East, coach Lavin’s track record of putting players in the NBA and a staff with three former NBA assistants working under the new Red Storm head coach.

Would have posted on Redmen as well, but for some reason I can't post!  Moose, have I been banned for some reason?  (I don't think so.)

After just being on the OSU message board, and sifting through all their bickering about nonsense.  It seems that the home crowd thinks Harrison is a lock to go there.  Their main point of emphasis was that OSU was going after J. Hinds and Harrison as their two main guard recruits.  According to the posters, OSU canceled their in-house visit with Hinds and that later he stated it was because OSU already landed another guard.

The other guard being Harison.

This could just be the home faithful rallying for Harrison, however in the begining of the day a few of the posters said he was going to SJU.  The begining of my post was put on the OSU website about 20 minutes ago.

Just thought I would see what you guys thought.

The OK State boards are wondering why the hell anybody would choose St. John's over their precious university.  :idiot2:  They're also pulling these alleged quotes from Harrison himself, talking about when he was on campus saying "I want to see where I'm gonna be living," and rating their visit a 10/10.

Got to admit though, I'm very weary of this report. This kid hasn't leaked like ANYTHING yet.

If he was going to go to Ok State, wouldn't he just as well stay in Texas and go to UT or TT.

Ok State can offer wide open spaces in the middle of nowhere. Not to mention a pretty lousy education.

I've actually seen Curro, unlike Rothstein, at tournaments.
He's based out of Wisconsin and his specialty is the Midwest. Clark Francis used to rely on him and, perhaps, still does. He's got a good eye.

From his perspective, his close friend and teammate, Nash, is looking heavily at OSU.

The last time I was in Stillwater, which is really remote, they had a tornado in the middle of the night, but the students were welcoming and friendly-unlike the OU dimwits.

St. John's  is again emerging as a destination for some of the country's most talented basketball players. The Red Storm Thursday landed 6-3 D'Angelo Harrison from John Foster  Dulles High outside of Houston, one of the 20 best shooting guards in this senior class, according to several scouting services.

Harrison picked the Johnnies over Baylor, Marquette and Oklahoma State in a much-anticipated announcement on ESPNU.

He is an accurate shooter from long range with a quick first step on the drive. According to a Big East assistant coach "he will be a double-figure scorer in our conference."

A scoring machine, Harrison plays with supreme swagger and showed the ability this summer with the Franchize All-Stars to score in every single way. Any program would have an elite level scorer in this Harrison should they be lucky enough to get him. Harrison played in front of all the big-time coaches each time he stepped on the court this summer and showed to be in constant attack mode as one of the elite scoring guards in the class.

Whoa, whoa....there is a HUGE difference between calling someone "the guy" and calling someone "the savior."  You can't be serious?

I think Harrison is "the guy," because his scoring ability is just absurd.  He can run both guard positions for us and he really ties in with the three forwards we signed before him.  Now, Pointer will provide some insane defense and that was much needed as well.  Without Harrison, I think we just have a very good, athletic team that will be great on the boards and might struggle with points from time to time.

With Harrison, we become a team that has a go-to scorer and plethora of other players that can score very well.  To use a baseball analogy, we got our ace pitcher, and the whole staff is better off.

The first time D’Angelo Harrison visited Madison Square Garden he didn’t get a good look at what the basketball mecca had in store for him.

The New York City arena was being prepared for a Justin Bieber concert.

On Wednesday morning at Dulles High School, Harrison made it official that he will get to see plenty of it without the distraction of the teen singer.

The senior point guard signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for St. John’s University, which plays most of its home games at Madison Square Garden - perhaps the most famous basketball court in the world.

Harrison made an oral commitment on live national television several weeks ago. Thursday marked the second day of the NCAA’s early signing period.

“This is a big thrill,” he said. “I’m ready to go up there. I actually want to start this year.”

---------------------

Recruiting analysts have suggested the Johnnies had all the pieces except for a point guard – a void Harrison is expected to fill.

Looks like he doesnt have much help on that team but its good to see him shooting well even though the defense was probably all over him. 21-23 from the line, wow thats awesome. This kid is going to stretch defenses and really be a very good scorer right away I think.

I love the fact that he gets to the free throw line...Nuri, too.  That is basketball...taking it to the rim.  Most kids these days just want to dunk or shoot from three, but we have two kids now that want to take it to the tin or pullup from 10-15.  Offensively it seems like Harrison has everything.  I can't believe he's not a top 25 recruit at this point with his rep as the best shooter in the class.

The scoring machine is at it again....  Harrison goes for 39 on last night.

Harrison scored 39 points and got 13 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a 70-40 victory over visiting Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated. Harrison scored 56 points on Monday night, but Dulles lost to Alief Taylor by three.

Harrison said Tuesday the feelings are polar opposites.

"I don't really care about the points," the St. John's University signee said. "I'll take 10 points and get the 'W' rather than have 56 and lose. If I had a chance to give it to somebody else and have them make the shots I would do it
."

Yes, but they can't be postgrads, that is, they can only be in their fourth year of high school.

Boys hoops Notebook: Harrison, Dulles boys adjust to new surroundings

Daniel Redeaux has spent his entire Dulles High School basketball career marveling at what D'Angelo Harrison can do on the court.

Playing on a sub-varsity team for three seasons before this one, Redeaux has seen Harrison grow from a promising freshman on the varsity to one of the state's unquestioned stars.

It's hard to blame anyone for that. Harrison is one of the best scorers Texas will see for quite some time. The problem, however, is that Redeaux and his teammates finally have joined Harrison on the varsity.

Bragging about him from the stands no longer is an option.

"He puts on such a show that you want to watch him do all the scoring," Redeaux said. "At the same time you have to remember you're still playing, too."

Sounds like he gets a lot of his own misses--probably from deep three's that bounce out.  36 FG attempts, 7 offensive rebounds.  I always like to see guards with high rebounds.   It will really help if we continue to run a zone and the boxing out assignments become cloudy.

D'Angelo Harrison led Dulles with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Jamail Wallace added 18 points, and Jason Palfreyman scored 10. Daniel Redeaux had 10 rebounds. The Vikings (14-3) will play in the host school in the semifinals Wednesday. It is a rematch of last year's championship game that Sulphur won.

AUSTIN 70, DULLES 58

Austin was in the game anyway but took advantage of Dulles' D'Angelo Harrison sitting on the bench for the game's final nine minutes. The Bulldogs (12-11, 2-4) led by two points at the end of the third quarter then stretched the lead midway through the fourth. Harrison made a jump shot late in the third quarter then was called for a technical foul after saying something to an Austin player. Harrison, who scored 19 points, came out of the game and did not go back in.

7 losses for a team with a player like Harrison on it must mean the rest of the team is nothing.  It could be so many things.  Wasn't Pelle suspended earlier this year 'indefinitely' and it turned out to be 1 game.

This is a bad sign for this class. 2 kids suspended. granted we dont know what it is for but we cant afford to have to dismiss kids from the team next year and the lack of leadership that we will have may exacerbate this attitude problem with some of these guys.

i think this is something to watch out for and hopefully lav and co are sending messages now to these kids that shit like this is unacceptable and wont be tolerated next year. these kids have to have their heads on right when they get here.

I think details should be presented before we even begin to 'worry'.  What if Harrison doesn't get along with this coach?  What if his coached got pissed he missed a big shot, as opposed to the tons of ones he made and rode him for it in front of others?  Thats two hypotheticals for one side of the argument.  Yes you can say What if he was being a ball hog?  Or he fought with a teammate?

Could go on all day and it serves no purpose.

I know that his team is really really bad and he was playing through an injury for a majority of the season. I wouldn't worry too much.

Interesting. And not in a good way. Then again, it also sounds like Harrison is a one-man team... that's got to wear on a player.

7 losses for a team with a player like Harrison on it must mean the rest of the team is nothing.  It could be so many things.  Wasn't Pelle suspended earlier this year 'indefinitely' and it turned out to be 1 game.
I don't mean the losses. Have you seen the point totals that have been posted? He's the team!

As for the suspension, seeing a guy get suspended for any length of time isn't a good thing. Not much positive spin on that.  Does it mean Harrison sucks? Or that he's a problem child? Or not coachable? Not at all. But it does mean there was something suspendable (yes, that's not a word) that he did. Which isn't great news, even if his coach is a complete a-hole.

I'm just saying it's an eyebrow-raiser.

(& at least I'm not analyzing the defenses he's playing against in every game sight-unseen!)

Ok so Harrison let his emotions get to him after being triple teamed all game. He got into a dispute with the coach which resulted in the suspension. Everything has been resolved and Harrison knows he was wrong. This is just nothing more than a great player being frustrated. It's a tough situation being an elite player on a mediocre team. It begins to wear on you especially when you're a great competitor.

Dave is correct in Harrison is facing double, and in some instances, triple teams from the opposition.  Who knows what other junk defenses he's probably facing.  He probably got a bit edgy and had some words with the coach.  It's unfortunate, but hopefully things been squashed and he'll be back in the lineup soon.

Hell!  It seems he has some fire in his belly.  Give me that to go along with his skills and we have something.

I agree it is good to see a fire in someone's belly. maybe the 10 panzy ass seniors we have now could learn something from him. All i am saying is its something to watch out for. what is a fire ins someone could turn into a spreewell if its not contained.

Im excited for the incomming class but i dont want these kids coming in here thinking they deserve anything and having inflated egos, running their mouths off...becasue come BE play they are going to learn exactly how good they are and how much work they are going to have to do over the course of their time at SJU

Wasn't Pelle suspended earlier this year 'indefinitely' and it turned out to be 1 game.

Pelle didn´t play the first three games of the season. And he was ejected in another game. I don´t know if he was suspended after that game.

We don´t know the facts about the Harrison suspension. But the word "indefinitely" never sounds good in those cases.

One of these days D'Angelo Harrison is going to miss a potential winning shot. Until then - and probably even after that - the Dulles High School boys basketball team is going to keep giving him the ball when it matters most.

Harrison sank a deep 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give the Vikings a 48-47 victory over a hot Elkins team at Hopson Field House Tuesday night.

Michael Conklin made two 3-pointers down the stretch on his way to 10 points. Ryan Thomas led Kempner (14-15, 3-7) with 16 points.

21 pts 5 boards 3 assists 3 steals in his first All-Star game with all top 75 talent.  Nice to see three Johnnies start in the East-West game and Pointer start and fill it up in the North-South game.

I've heard defense is sometimes an issue for him, but he looked like he was trying pretty hard on that end in an All-Star game where nobody usually plays D.  His shot release is PURE and he gets his shot off in an instant...one of the quickest releases I've ever seen.  He can hit them in rhythm or off the bounce or from a standstill.  The only negative I could possibly see is that he has a slight fadeaway, but his superior hand-eye coordination and pure release makes that almost a non-issue.

He looks YOUNG and looks closer to 6'1 than 6'3, but that doesn't matter at the college level.  Both him and Harkless take awesome angles to the offensive glass and they just know how to play the game.  He'll be a big-time rebounder for us at the guard spot.

I also loved how he took the ball to the hole against a HUGE center and sought out the contact and got a shot up after.  He didn't try to elude the big man...took it right at him, beat him to the spot....forced the foul.   He played some point and looks like he's even more capable than either Hardy or Nuri there, but we'll certainly need both him and Nuri/Greene to really excel there next year.

He's going to score 50 for us as some point.  He has too good of a deep shot, he's too good at drawing contact and getting to the line, and he has a midrange game with a scorer's edge that even makes Nuri look reluctant.

Espn's top players in the SouthWest:

D'Angelo Harrison, SG (Missouri City, Texas/John Foster Dulles)
St. John's coach Steve Lavin pulled a very confident scorer out of Texas who can drop big numbers in a short period of time. Harrison beats defenders off the bounce and can hit the jumper from deep. Harrison has the offensive package to break games open. They will love him in the Big Apple when he gets into a scoring groove.

Harrison has been playing fairly decent defense.  He even tried to take a charge, but it was a play on.  There was one sequence where he scored 8 consecutive points.  A drive for a layup (should've been an AND 1); a trey off of a steal and then a pull-up trey on a fast break.

This kid is gonna be fun once he gets rolling.

I didn't get to watch the game but from reading the comments above it seems like we have another guy that can play the point.  With Nuri, Greene, harrison, and stith I think we will be fine at the pg position.

Could it be possible that Harrison might be our bet option at the point for next year?  Seems like it could be.  Apparently he can pass real well.  He's not quite the slasher/driver that our other guys are, but his quick release as well as accuracy from the field as well as from 3 could be deadly as a PG if he can distribute the ball.  I agree that the PG spot likely won't be a problem for us next year, and it will be a battle for the majority of minutes at the PG spot.  Should be an exciting year.

I anticipate him coming off the bench as the spark plug either coming in to play on/off the ball. I think your early SL is Nuri, Pointer, Harkless, Polee, Sampson/GG. My sure bets are Nuri, Harkless, and Polee in the starting lineup.

I only watched one game of Lindsey in the JUCO tourney and he was carving up the defense with his forays to the basket.  Maybe, you didn't see that particular game.  Maybe, you did.

I believe Lindsey is the starting point guard and Harrison is starting next to him or the first guy off the bench.

I am thinking Nuri, Harrison, Mo, Polee, and Pelle as the starting 5

The starting 5 might ultimately be what your thinking, but other than Nuri, as of today, I think the starting 5 will be an ongoing experiment for the first part of the season until Lavin & Co. gets a good handle on what these kids can do.  Thankfully, we're so deep that the term "starter" will probably have little significance to the amount of playing time each player actually gets.

For as good as our class is, we are lacking in deep shooters.  For that reason, Harrison will get plenty of playing time.  I can't see anyway he doesn't start.

I think it will be Nuri-Harrison-Harkless-Polee-Pelle, but I just can't see Pointer not playing.  I don't think there are any sure bets to start, but Harrison is a sure thing to get 25 mins with his scoring ability.  I don't think Pointer has the handle to play the two conistently right now.

Damn do we have a lot of "Spark plug" type players:  Greene, Sampson, Pointer, Garrett, Polee...Harrison with his shot.  The biggest battle next season will be between Pointer and Harkless.  I think Harkless will get the nod because of his offensive skill.  That sets up an offensive-minded group with Nuri and Harrison and paves the way for a wholesale substitution of defensive-minded energy guys like Pointer, Garret, Sampson, and Greene.

It'll be interesting if he tries to go offense/defense like that.  My thinking is that Harrison and Harkless are the most skilled offensively and that he will try to have one of them on the court at all times.

Completely agree.  Greene seems like he could be in that group as well.  I saw him play live in Florida this season and I'm PUZZLED that he's not a top 50 or at least a top 75 talent.  I don't understand what I'm missing.  He's a jumping jack, athletic, shoots well, passes well, tight handles, d's up....really reminded me of Ben Gordon when I saw him as a junior.

You saw Greene play?  Where is your recap?  I recall another poster on one of the two boards writing a recap but it def wasn't Marillac.

Would love to hear about Greene and Traylor and even Deandre for that matter.

it puzzles me how a player such as Daniels, who is a conscientious top 30 prospect, can be the second best player on his team (green won MVP for IMG this year), and yet Greene isn't even sniffing the top 100 as far as rivals and scout goes.

I'm excited to have a third guard capable of coming in and hitting shots, playing d, and facilitating the offense. Something we may not have had since? Shariff fordham?

Honestly, I believe I'm the only one (with the exception of a poster on Redmen) who has witnessed Greene play.  I've spoke about Greene a couple of times or so on both boards.

I asked Marillac about Greene in the "2011-2012 starting lineup" thread on this board, and he basically admitted he hadn't seen him play without actually verbalizing it (as, he never once said he saw him play until now).  I'm sure if he had witnessed Greene play then he would've came to this board talking about it.

LOL  C'mon, dude!

Back to Harrison....

He raved about Greene and cautioned that he didn't like Daniels' game at all.

He used the wrong choice of words, in reference to Harrison's game on last Friday.  Harrison didn't light up the scoreboard, but he played a pretty decent game.  He was even playing fairly decent on the defensive end, as well.

Looks like D'Angelo will be in NY for summer school next week:

"Not yet, I'm coming down to watch my AAU team," Harrison said when asked if he was in the Big Apple for school already. "I think I come down June 20th, something during that week [for] . . . second summer session."

With his soon-to-be school so close by, Harrison did not waste the opportunity to head to St. John's over the weekend.

"I actually worked out there [on Saturday]," Harrison said, adding that he was likely going back again Sunday night.

With only one member of the Red Storm returning next season, Harrison was not working out with the team, but rather with some future Johnnies, amongst others. He said that he was in the gym with Maurice Harkless, God's Gift Achiuwa as well as Nate Blue.

"Harkless, JaKarr [Sampson] and Dom Pointer. I think that's the core group [I know the best] . . . and Amir Garrett too," Harrison said.

Very smooth and deadly.  Per the couple of all-star games and two videos I've witnessed of Harrison....  I, most definitely liked what I've seen so far.  If, none of you have read some of the spring and summer reviews of Harrison (from last year), per Rivals....  Go and read 'em.  Some very stellar reviews.

Thanks for the vid, Hardwood!

The Fort Bend Sun Top 10 athletes

3. D’Angelo Harrison, Sr., Dulles basketball

In a district where double-teams are a rarity because teams are so deep, Harrison sometimes got double-teamed when he didn’t even have the ball. He was as dominant as any player in recent years in the state’s toughest basketball district. The St. John’s signee averaged 31.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.8 steals and made 87 3-pointers. He was named the Sun’s Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Dulles' D'Angelo Harrison

Arguably the best basketball player in Fort Bend ISD during the last 10 years, Harrison was a scoring machine. He averaged 31.1 points and 10.1 rebounds. The St. John's signee checks in at No. 3 on the Sun's list of Top Athletes for the 2010-11 school year.

Agree there is a very good chance at this Marrilac.  He has swagger and poise that is un-freshman like.  I think he averages double digit scoring right out the gate.  He's got a good handle, can shoot anywhere in the building and is a great rebounder for a guard.  He's one big reason we can make the NCAA's this season because I think he'll make a seamless transition to the college game with his work ethic and adjust quickly ala shabazz Napier.  Some of our forwards need some fine tuning, but Harrison is a scoring guard in every sense, and has few "cold" nights because he doesn't seem to just rely in his jump shooting. He's an instant starter at SG.  I love his nastiness on the court.  From what I heard coming out if IS8, he's a green beret out there and refuses to lose.

Here's some great news about our future star D'Angelo.  I haven't seen this posted yet, but it was back from the Derby Classic which was LOADED with talent.

"The White team trailed all the way until a third-quarter rally. St.John's signee D'Angelo Harrison hit back-to-back three-pointers that tied it at 92, and his alley-oop pass to LeBryan Nash gave the team its biggest lead at 108-99."

"D’Angelo Harrison certainly isn’t filling up the stat sheet, but dude is playing harder than anyone out there.  Hustling all over the floor, making the right pass, and not playing strictly for the highlights are a few of the things that the St. John’s commit is doing out there."

"That's some unselfish play. Could Harrison challenge for the lead guard role with the Johnnies? Certainly, from what we saw from the game, he could be the backup point guard in a pinch. And that's best for his future money-making prospects - at 6'2" or so, he'll need to be able to handle to play on the pro level. There's a lot to like about D'Angelo Harrison's game."

Again, his stat line from that game was 8 pts (3-7 overall, 2-5 from deep) 5 assists, 3 boards, 1 steal, and only 1 turnover in 21 minutes.  The only knock on Harrison was his defense, but he was getting after it the tournament I saw him when he filled it up with 21 points and apparently he was playing harder than anyone in the Derby Classic and running the star-studded offense and his team to a victory.  I love the fact that he took a backseat for the good of his team, but his back-to-back three's to tie the score after his squad was trailing the entire game.

very early in the season last year, coach lavin said that Hardy and Brownlee had impressed him the most in practices.  everyone seemed surprised given that DJ was to top player the previous year.  lavin was spot on with his assesment.  i wonder who it will be this year?  i'm going to bet that it's harrison.  i think he provides that greatest combination of speed, athletiscm, 3-point threat, can get to rim, and has a great handle.

Asked D'Angelo if he missed his last 23 shots what does he think about taking his 24th? He said how I'm going to make it without any hesitation.

This confidence would be his best asset or worst enemy.

I remember one game where Elijah Ingrim missed something like 20 3's in one game. I think he was 1-21 haha.

Jesus....these kids can't win, huh? Either they're a pushover or "cocky."
You can't have it both ways. Which would you prefer?

All this overanalysis is killing me. Just let them get on the court and play.
The Kyle Anderson thread is driving me crazy too. Just be patient. These are kids making life-altering decisions. My gut says he's coming here, but, let him make his mind up. We'll be alright either way.

i'm with you guinness....i'll take this kid and his cockiness, although i think it's more confidence than being cocky, any day of the week and twice on sunday vs the confidence we are used to seeing in 95% of the players we have seen in the past 5 years. (exception hardy last year and i'll even give a little to brownlee although i think he was timid at times.)

Not really over analysis or a slight to D'Angelo. He's an extremely confident kid. It's a fact. He's a really nice kid as are all the recruits but damn he's cocky.

A guy who's a shooter lives by the sword and dies by the sword.
You need to have confidence when you play in this conference, and a boatload of confidence to come from Texas to New York m-fing City. The fact he's eager to do so is a positive. A gigantic positive.

So, yes, more please.

If I have a lights out shooter I want him to be cocky as hell. I want him to take that 24th. shot to break his slump. However I also want him to have the intelligence to drive to the hoop and take that layup or 10 footer. A layup breaks the slump as much as a 25 footer. I think this kid has the smarts for that.

He is a kid who will take it to the hoop when opportunity presents itself.  He isn't someone who'll just jack jumpers.  He is very adept at getting to the tin.

Side note its been said before but this feature and the Phil Greene one as well as the coaches last year were great.  Looking forward to the next player!

One of the brothers teaching an engineering class once spoke of doing and being the best we could in our profession because no one could take that away.  He then added any s-head can make money.  I say this because Telfair didn't make the most of his gifts.  He could be doing a lot more to maximize his potential.  But he has done well for himself regardless of his underperformance and imho lack of complete effort.

Could he have made boatloads more?  Sure.  He got as far as he wanted to.

Heck he was the 13th pick in the draft in 04 while the 14th pick was Kris Humphries.  He only recently got his career on track.  He's made $17 million oh and he married Kim Kardashian :)

Looking back on that '04 Draft the other HS'ers were Dwight Howard ($65M), Shaun Livingston ($18M) finally getting career back on track,  Robert Swift ($11M) and out of the League, Al Jefferson ($43M), Josh Smith ($38M), JR Smith ($23M), and Dorell Wright ($14M).  So they all pretty much cashed in and all are still in the League except for Swift.  What is the average length of NBA career?

Conclusion at the end of paper:

Conclusions and Recommendations:

A review of the literature shows the basketball scouting and player evaluation process leading to the NBA draft to be a difficult process and one that could benefit from more information in the form of statistical analysis. The data in the present study demonstrate that there is a relationship between collegiate play described statistically and career longevity in the NBA, as follows:

Assists, turnovers, and points recorded by guards over the year of college basketball play immediately preceding entrance into the NBA are related to NBA career longevity.

Assists, steals, turnovers, and points recorded by guards over 2 years of college basketball play immediately preceding entrance into the NBA are related to NBA career longevity.

Field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and assists recorded by forwards over the year of college basketball play immediately preceding entrance into the NBA are related to career longevity in the NBA.

Assists and rebounds recorded by forwards over 2 years of college basketball play immediately preceding entrance into the NBA are related to career longevity in the NBA.

The results of this study show a relationship between basketball’s statistics categories and NBA career longevity, but more work is needed to fully understand the predictive mechanism and provide general managers with more precise information. In addition, future studies should seek out data for the years prior to 1987–88 and following 2001–02, to begin to track historical trends in the relationship.

You're splitting atoms. He's a bust. There's no way around it. He's making a lot of money, AND he is still a bust. Yes, Felipe Lopez was a bust as well. And yes, there are several former Bruins, if not dozens who are also busts.

His attitude problem coupled with the ridiculous hype makes him stand out even more than players from outside NY who amounted to very little. My point was not to pick on just Sebastian. I'm talking about the entire NYC high school basketball scene, and how it is dramatically overrated.

Would I get blown out of the water for pointing out its a localiazed machine?  Poison has a self defeating prophecy.   The hype machine is a tornado, not a national weather front - it feeds itself locally.   Here's the queston.  Telfair was hyped as the best in your area of the country.   As poison points out, NYC ain't "been all that"  for a while.   What success or failure the kid has has to be based on the competion he was rated against when the hype was created.   How many from the NY area in Telfair's era proved to BE better?

I know it seems like being #1 in NY should mean #1 everywhere.  I've hesitated mentioning that even tho the regional hype does lead to large national reputations and subsequent national hype, it's not always the same level as its percevied locally.  Would it surprise folks here know that west of the Rockies, folks considered a 6'11 PF named o'mmA Givens  out of Aberdeen High in Washington State to be the nations #1 recruit when he came out, rather than a NY kid named Felipe Lopez in the same class? And in the Midwest that year, they swore it was Mt. Carmel (IL) forward Antione Walker.   Honest to God, whatever school landed Walker was going to win the NCAA title within two years.  And did.

Anyway, hasn't this poor horse been kicked pretty much to death?

So, getting back to the Nuri thread, disappointed no one liked the Walter Brennan "cocky" clip  :'(

Awful?!?!?.....Ur comments are disrespectful to ball players. Telfair got drafted straight out of HS with the "hope" that he would develop into something more than he has been but the fact that he did not live up to the "hope" does not make him a bust. Telfair is still in the league, and has remained in the league for 7 years. How many ball players can say that? Do you know the work that any sub 6 foot tall player has to do to accomplish what he has done? He's not a bust...Lenny Cooke is another story.

Split this thread. Harrison is as good looking of a scoring prospect as I've seen in a while.  I can't see this kid not making 1st team all-Big East twice and becoming our next All-American.  It is very tough for me to temper my expectations for him. He'll score 40 at some point.

PERCEPTIONS....

Read in sevaral assorted threads that folks think evenutally D'Angelo will get his shooting together much like Hardy did last year.

Interesting tho - Buckets hit 35% from 3 for us last season.   D'Angelo is currently at 38%   Hope this doesn't mean fans hope he shoots WORSE the rest of the year in order to match up!  :)

Maybe 50 was a stretch, but I'm confident he scores 40 at least once.  Good to see Marillac all over this one ;)

Maybe 50 was a stretch, but I'm confident he scores 40 at least once.  Good to see Marillac all over this one ;)

LOL I don't want to overdo it ;)

I think the one player I missed on really bad was Larry Wright.  That was a different time, though, and I was just looking for anything to put some hope in.  I still find it hard to believe he didn't do better.
