Title: When did you become a St Johns fan?
Post by: sju89tr on January 08, 2013, 10:28:11 AM
Paultz provided a good point about Lou and Lapchick. I thought it might be a good idea to see when we started following the school.

I became hooked in 1981 when I was a freshman at Forest Hills High School and they would play St Johns games on TV every Saturday. It also coincided with Mullin's first year but I don't think I even thought about Mullin as a great player as I did not follow recruiting until after that.

My dad took me to a game in the early 80's. Georgetown vs St. John's.  Ewing vs Mullin.  Fight between Kevin Williams and Ewing.  I was hooked.

I remember being in the garden in 1986, as a 13 year old, watching St. john's beat Syracuse for the BE Championship.

A family friend played (sat the bench) for SJU and he always hooked us up with tickets. I started going when I was 7 or 8 but I don't remember much until Mullin's soph year when I was 10. Despite Mullin being on the team my favorite player was David Russell. I got hooked on the BE with the Saturday afternoon games on ch 9 when fighting was legal. The BE was like hockey back then.

Started going to every game in '86.  Loved the Malik years.  By far the most fun watching all of that team mature.  Everything changed when they moved the long time season ticket holders to different seats at Alumni.  Took the fun out of going there.  Still go when in town but they really made a lot of people bitter.

As a kid started going to SJU games and listening on radio during Seiden, Tony Jackson, Alfierii days. Haven't stopped!

I remember all the players from those early 1980 teams Jeff Allen, Bob Kelly, David Russell, Kevin Williams, Billy Goodwin etc. They were fun to watch. Of course by 1983 we had the the leading players in Mullin, Wennington, Jackson and Berry. Too bad Stewart got hurt as he would have been a great player rather than a rotation guy.

My dad went to Law School at St. John's so I grew up a fan even though I am from Syracuse country. Got into undergrad at St. John's but no football so I went elsewhere. Got into law school at STJ but too expensive so went elsewhere.

Guys in my section at CA used to go nuts about Kelly, much preferring Kevin Williams I believe.

Kevin Williams was a great player. Kelly was a bland point guard. He wasn't terrible though but Lou was loyal to him. Williams was a hot head and likely drove Lou nuts.

I used to only go to the Garden games as a kid, but I would watch college games on campus and it would look really cool. All the students going nuts. So I started begging my dad to take me to see SJU on campus. Finally he relented and took me to my first Alumni Hall game, but for some reason SJU played its games on Campus in a library. Needless to say it was not the experience I was looking forward to.

Was a biddy and got bused in wit the Fresh Air kids from the Bx to St.John that look like Shangra-lah and Xanadu all wrapped up to one. Coach Lou took me aside to show me how to shoot a ball in the proper fashion. Was so nice to me. And didnt have to be.

Kelly was the typical Louie pg.  Steady but not flashy.  Kevin was a 2.  It was the big argument on campus but I don't think Kevin would have handled the point well, especially in Louie's slow-down half-court offense.

As a kid in the early 70's, I have a vague recollection od a St. John's v. UCLA game on tv.  Not sure what year.  I also remember a game on tv against ND.  I was hooked when Reggie Carter transferred home.

My Dad was an SJU grad and never stopped going to games after graduation, finally when I was old enough in the late 80s he started taking me to games with him.   At first my mom only let him take me to Almuni Hall games, but I think when I was about six I was allowed to go to weekend games at the Garden (certainly not on a school night!)
Earlier in the 80s my grandpa retired from the nypd and took a job working security at  SJU, so I'd go to games with my dad and if it was a slow night ... Like a marathon oil type game, grandpa would take me down to the court or the hallway outside the locker room.  ; I've got some cool pictures at home with Matt Brust, Jayson, one with Bobby Werdann holding me up on his shoulders.   Those are some of my fondest memories as a kid.  Made me a Redman for life.
Also vividly remember getting to a game once probably round '89, at alumni hall, it was crowded and loud so it was propbably a big east opponent, BC?, and telling my dad that I saw Darryl Strawberry when I had gone to the bathroom, dad didn't believe me for a second.  Then Darryl sat down in our section.  That was beyond cool for me.

Final note: either my 3rd or 4th grade cyo team played an exhibition during halftime of a game at alumni, I made a steal and had a wide open breakaway.... I flubbed the layup to the crowds jeers.    Not my finest moment on a basketball court.

A lot of my family are STJ and STJ law school alums, and STJ name was golden growing up in my house. I remember watching the game on channel 9 and listening on WFAN.  I was a huge Big East fan first, and I recall Terry Dehere being my all-time favorite.  My first STJ memory is of Shawnelle Scott and Fred Lyson. During the Felipe years I became a huge STJ fan and the rest is history.

To show how this disease never dies, during the Cincy game I was stood up as they started rallying in the first half. I didn't sit down until the game was over and I am 60. F'n nuts!

Played (and lost) against the McGuires at 108 st court in Rockaway Beach back in the 50's and that's what got me on board.

Very impressed by Dick.

Al was the nastiest ballplayer I had ever seen.

My brother went to SJU ('60) and my son went there as well ('06).

Been an SJU fan for over half a century.

It's these chance encounters out of the spotlight that reveal character.

I was never crazy about Spike Lee until my son (then 11 or so) and I were waiting for our car in a parking lot after a Knicks game. Spike showed up and struck up a conversation with my son about school, teachers, basketball, etc. and ever since then I've had nothing but respect for the man.

First game as a student UCLA v SJU sro paid $5  to sit on the steps. The feature game was USF ( Bill Russell ) v Holy Cross ( Tommy Heinson ) sic

I loved McGuire and Packer together back in the day.  I was so disappointed when they split up.  Al had such a genuine personality and it came through in his broadcasts.

First game was 1979 - 80 season when my Father took me and my brothers. He was good friends with the Coach at St. Francis Prep HS and they were playing a game before St. John's. We got to meet the entire team and Coach Carnesecca, been hooked since.

I am Class of 1988 from high school and one of my very good friends played for SJU from 88 - 92. I got to spend a lot of time with the players on the teams then and a few of them are still good friends today. After my Freshman year of college I came home and went to school locally, we used to drive to as many road SJU games as we could from 89 - 90 season thru 91- 92 year, great times. Tripped to BC, Providence, Syracuse, Gtown (multiple times)

Then when I graduated college in 1993 (5 year plan), my Father gave me season tickets as a graduation present.

My parents are both alums so I've been a fan as long as I can remember but the first memory I have of actually going to games when I was a freshman in high school and my dad took me to the Holiday Festival in Norms first year where we smoked NC State. After that I started going to all the MSG games then became a student and started going to all of the games at CA too. Just recently graduated with my MBA from St. John's.

Born in 83 - grew up a Johnnies fan.  My CYO team played at half time at Alumni Hall for one of those Marathon Oil exhibition games.  Shawnelle Scott was my favorite player until Bootsy tore up Duke.

Uncle played baseball for SJU, got my Dad into it and we have had seats since 1973.  Went to the first BIg EASt tourney and just about every one since. Now my kids come to the games with us, it's pretty cool. My daughter met Looie at a Dr.'s office and he knew the family name from my Uncle, which was very cool.

I became a fan around the early 60's when LeRoy Ellis and teammates got lost in my neighborhood in Qiueens on their way to the Jamaica campus from Brooklyn. I gave them directions and they were able to get to Alumni Hall in time. I've been a Redmen fan ever since and a proud graduate as well! :)

1963...even the freshman team was impressive...

the varsity lost a close one to ohio state early and i was sold.  we beat creighton with rebounding leader paul silas...loyola of chicago which was reigning national champion...and number one nyu by 20...and i became obsessed.

it just dawned on me.  this is the 50th season i've followed this team.  yikes!!

Born in '91. My dad is from Brooklyn and is a huge St. John's fan, and it just rubbed off on me. I became a fan during the Jarvis years when my dad took me to my first game. I live upstate near Saratoga, so I only make it to a couple games per season. To be honest, this site and Redmen.com took my fandom to a new level. It allows me to follow the team more closely and it's fun to follow the recruiting battles and have conversations during the games.

I first became a St. Johns fan around 2001-2002, to be honest Marcus Hatten, bootsy Thornton, Omar cook, type players attracted me to st johns basketball. Growing up in Connecticut I obviously grew up around nothing but uconn fans, now I hate uconn! I'm only 22 so I didn't become a die hard until I was about 11-12 years old. I have seen a lot of losing over the years and have still stayed loyal, as all of you have. I can't wait for us to have the same successes that we had in the early 2000s but even more wins!

I always liked St. John's growing up in Long Island as the local school, but UNC was my favorite team from when I was a kid until I started going to St. John's. One of my best friend's younger brother was a HUGE fan who basically went to almost every home game. He was diagnosed with leukemia, and later died. But while he was sick I tried to get him tickets to a game vs. Pitt that for some reason he couldn't get tickets for (they ended up upsetting them that year). I was a freshman and of course was lost looking for where to buy the tickets with my student ID. As I was looking around I saw Coach Roberts so I went up to him and asked him where I could get tickets. He walked me to the ticket booth, and thanked me for my support, and he and the coaching staff later reached out to my friends family. From then on I renounced my UNC fandom, and have been a diehard fan of St. John's since. That gesture really meant a lot to me, and my friend's family too, and I knew this was the kind of program I wanted to be a fan of.

I can remember going to the little theater as a child to see a show on campus and meeting Charles Minlend. I have been a fan ever since that day. I don't remember what was the first game i ever attended, but I do remember getting the whole team to sign a Red Storm Hat and getting Felipe to sign my Lopez jersey. I believe it was during his senior year and Ron's first. Big thanks to my brother for taking me to all those games when i was a kid. Almost twenty years later and we still meet up, and enjoy the games together.

Hundreds and hundreds of years for those of us who have ridden the roller coaster of victory and defeat in St. John's basketball.

A little story for my fellow dinosaurs.

On his 100th birthday George Allen was asked what was the best thing about reaching 100 years of age.

Unhesitatingly, George quipped, "Lack of peer pressure."

Part of me is heartened that so many young peeps is fans even though they only experience the last 20 year - which contain the lowest points in the 'gram's histry.

Can only speak for myself choz, but I didnt choose the program, it chose me.

Correct.  Much like the Mets Jets and Knicks.

Despite the ups and downs, I couldn't be happier being a St Johns alumnus and fan. I came to St Johns because of the basketball team being a fan and hanging up my cleats as I didn't want to go to other local schools to play baseball and I wasn't good enough to play for St. Johns. In addition, I get to waste a part of my productive day talking with you folks.

Even as an undergrad at NYU in the early 60's there was a special respect for Lapchick.  When Violet went to Division 3 I became a STJ fan and later finished my doctorate there.

This is one of the best threads in a long time.  And I'm pleasantly surprised and the diversity of experiences the posters here have.   Amazing actually.

Plus, I discovered Chudney and I played against each other at halftime 20 years ago!

Moved to the city in September '84 and as a big time college hoops fan started attending a lot of games with my college buddies who also had moved in.  At first we were dragged in by the excellent fields for the pre season NIT and then attending more.  This of course meant a lot of STJ games and of course '84-'86 meant seeing the two greatest STJ teams of my adult life to start.  Hooked.

No connection to the school other then I was a big basketball fan. A big NY basketball fan. Loved all the great NY teams of the fifties and sixties - SJU, NYU, LIU, Manhattan, Fordham.

Sometime in the early 60's I started to follow SJU more, as the other teams started to fade. Then one summer Louie gave a clinic in Coney Island. I went with my cousin. I met Louie and touted my cousin as a great basketball player. He must have been all of 5'5". To his credit Louie wanted to know all about him until we both cracked up and told Louie it was all a joke. We all had a good laugh. That was it. Another 50 + year fan.

My mom wanted me to go to SJU as I would be the first in the family to attend and she had a cousin who went to the school, law school and became the dean there.  I got a scholarship to Manhattan so that decided that but made her happy when I got my MBA from SJU in the 1970's.  Loved College BB and used to go to old MSG with GO card for great games/fifty cents upstairs.  When doing MBA, I would leave at the break and go to Alumni Hall and was hooked with Glen Williams, George Johnson,Beaver Smith, Mel Utley and Frankie Alagia during the time I was there.  When my wife was at the law school I used to go to all the games at Alumni as she was always in the library.  Since she is out we have season Tickets for over 30 years.

Hello all,
I became a fan around 15 or 20 years ago when my older brother went to school in Queens.  I am not an alum.  It's funny, I became a nut fan of the team, and now he is only a casual fan.  I keep him informed.

I started reading these fan boards only in the last couple of years, and I only worked up the courage to start posting on them recently.   I hope you all will indulge me a bit.  I promise to be civil.

To administrators of this board - thank you very much. It is very well run.

Haha..  It's definitely been a lean 15 or 20 years.  I'm a glutton for punishment.  Maybe, just maybe things have turned around for good here....   It's funny, I'm a MLB fan and an NFL fan as well, and I get a lot more fun rooting for these guys - even during all these lean years -  than any of the pro teams.

Felipe Lopez scoring 40 something as a freshman, didnt have a college team yet and I loved the bulls and thought Lopez reminded me of Jordan a little bit his freshman year, but we all know how that played out.  But it was Felipe Lopez who made me a huge fan of St. John's.

At Syracuse , freshman year, Felipe scored 38.  I believe that was his career high.

My dad took me to a Georgetown/STJ game at MSG in early 80's.  Was hooked after that.  Kevin Williams tried to fight Ewing.

He scored 35, and we lost that game. Moten was smarter.

in 87-88 when Boo Harvey and Mike Porter were running the backcourt.  I have a few games from this season on dvd but trying to find more.  I've tried MSG Network, no luck.  Did anyone happen to tape any games back then?  Would be willing to convert to digital for you for free and return both versions.

Never cared for St Johns. Was hardly a basketball fan before I got accepted and went there in 2009. '

Lavin's 1st season got me interested in the team and I've grown as a fan ever since.

I was born into it. My Dad graduated in the late 50's from the Brooklyn campus. Louie also coached my Dad as a kid in youth baseball growing up in the city.

My earliest memories were the year before the Final Four run when they lost in the '84 tourney. I was only 7 or 8 at the time. Then the '85 team had me hooked. After that when I was about 10 my Dad got me my official Redmen jacket for Christmas and the rest is history.

1960. I was a basketball fan. Loved the Knicks. Had to follow the local college basketball game. Loved LIU, NYU, MANHATTAN, FORDHAM also. We were the most successful out of that group so Johnnies it was.

Was a young kid, and my sister went to sju. First game I went to was probably mid 70s. I remember George Johnson, Reggie Carter, Rencher, and Frank Alagia. I actually went to SJU cause of my love for the team.

I was at Bishop Loughlin in the late 50s and became a big basketball fan. Went to Pace early 60s The Pacesetter never did it for me.  St. Johns had some great teams and got the most press.  They are the only college basketball team I ever followed.

Low to mid 80s. I remember watching that 84-85 team. 3 losses that year.
2 vs. G-Town and @ Niagara.

What if we played Novas opponent and Nova played G-Town in the F4, and we played Nova in the finals?

We'll never know. Yeah, why play the what ifs?

I think it was channel 9 that used to broadcast the games. Remember Frank Alagia, Beaver Smith and Billy Sheaffer. The NCAA run in 1979. McCoy, Reggie Carter, David Russell. Going to ECAC Holiday Festivals at the Garden every year.

Actually 4 total losses and 3 to Georgetown but I'd take that every year.

Went to Fordham (70) but for hoops my heart was in Queens.  Saw my first game during the period (around 1960) when Billy Lawrence was at the point and was hooked.  My friend Tim, (Hurl the Pearl) Hurley's mom worked in the ROTC office and got us tickets during HS and College.  Fondest memory was the 65 season, Lapchick's  final season, when the McIntyers lead the team to the NIT crown.  Loved the teams in those years, all the squads were tough, defense oriented teams with a succession of great players, Sonny Dove, Rudy Bogad, Joe Depre, John Warren, Schaeffer, Ralphy Abraham and the Whopper, Billy Paultz.  Was a gym rat at Fordham and played pickup at Alumni hall as well.  Great times, a Queens girlfriend, and beers at Sams.

Before my time but very poetic. I had no choice to be a Giants, Knicks, Mets and of course St. John's fan. First game was probably around 1980 at alumni hall against DePaul. Not sure who was on the team but we had fun at those games. 84 and 85 had to catch at the knights of Columbus because we didn't have cable. But man that team made me love St. Johns. Still do and think we are on are way back.

Early Life-Capital District, I was a Yankee, Giant, and Redmen fan, I remember reading everything I could about the NY teams. Moved to Syracuse,in 52 finding stuff to read about the Redmen became more difficult, but in 1957 I enrolled into the Pharmacy Program at St. John's in Brooklyn. We had a coach by the name of Lapchick, a few guys I watched thru my years in school included Gus Alfieri, LeRoy Ellis, Tony Jackson,Kevin Loughery,Alan Seiden, to name a few. I have followed them voraciously for 68 years. Living in Syracuse that can be a challenge in local press. Graduated from St. John's class of 1961

Mullin's freshman year, I wasn't much of a basketball fan but I went to a Red White game and saw this kid dominating all over the court.  So good he played for the Red team in the first half and they killed the White team and then switched jerseys in the second half and the White killed the Red.  I've been hooked ever since.

1985 Big east Championship on TV...only real college basketball team in the area. Got hooked on the Redmen and continued to watch. Loved Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, Mark JacksoN, Malik Sealy, Bootsy Thornton, Lavar Postell, Marcus Hatten, Anthony Glover...even through the lean years of Norm Roberts...have continued to root from Cuse country in upstate NY.  The last 3 years have been unbelievable in regards to the SJU-SU rivalry...got see the boys win in their last two trips to the Dome. Trust the process!!!!
