QUEENS, N.Y. - Joined by University officials and a host of volunteers, the Red Storm men's basketball team made its 12th-annual Thanksgiving trip to the St. John's Bread and Life Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, serving turkey dinners to nearly 1,600 Brooklyn area residents.

Head coach Norm Roberts and son Justin were joined as always by NBC 4's Bruce Beck and family, and the Red Storm men's basketball players and staff at the all-new 85,000 square foot Bread and Life facility. The new building opened in June 2008 at its new location on Bushwick Ave. in Brooklyn, now officially under the umbrella of the University.

"Today was a great opportunity for our team to get involved in the community. One of the things that makes St. John's University a unique place is its mission to help the less fortunate," said Roberts. "Today is great for our guys and it helps them realize how fortunate they are, and what great opportunities they have in front of them. We are all truly blessed to be in the places we are and to have the opportunities we have. This is the best day of the year for our team and our staff. The opportunity to help people in this way, even if it's just to make one day better for them, is awesome."

Fr. James Maher, University Vice President for Student Affairs and Chairman of the Board Emeritus at St. John's Bread and Life, Mary Pat Beirne of the Athletic Development unit and Paula and Tori Migliore of STJ Campus Ministry spearhead the annual community service event with the Red Storm.

"Returning to St. John's Bread and Life at Thanksgiving time is like coming home. It was an honor and a privilege to serve so many people in need today," said Maher. "All the volunteers, including the student-athletes, coaches and staff were very gracious to offer their time, presence and service. Today serves as a reminder of the challenge and promise of Thanksgiving, and with the 30 percent rise in those needy New Yorkers needing emergency food program, we are challenged to do more to meet their needs. Watching the interaction between the coaches and student-athletes with the guests of Bread and Life, we are all reminded that we can make a difference."

The day of service and celebration ended with the singing of "God Bless America," led by St. John's student-manager Jayson "Biggie" Castillo and one of the guests of St. John's Bread and Life.

Scenes from the day and Bruce Beck interviews from St. John's Bread and Life Soup Kitchen will air on NBC 4 during Thanksgiving Day at 11 p.m. Red Storm fans can also catch footage on New York 1 on Wednesday as well.
