I am going to watch Joe Girard play at the House of Sports in Ardsley, NY on Saturday at 1:25pm. Heard he is a great shooter.
Joe Girard and his father will make an unofficial visit to St. Johns on Tuesday. Hopefully, he will also return for the Elite Camp on June 21st.

Joe Girard'19 will visit St.John's very soon. Has earned 7 offers + ND, Michigan, Louisville & Washington interest 247sports.com/Player/Joseph-…

This kid is ridiculous. I see his highlights whenever I'm at my sister's house in Saratoga Springs. He is also one of the best QB's in the state on the gridiron.
-
From upstate myself. Glens Falls is about 45 minutes north of Albany. Last Albany area kid to attend SJU? Elander "Lew Lew" Lewis?
-
I'm a Saratoga guy and the kid is the real deal, great 2 sport athlete
-
Beilein coached his dad and he's already visited Michigan, so you have to figure it's a wrap if they feel he is a high major player.

Recruit him to St. John's and promise him he can play football. ;)

Its not a wrap and I would say its a little too far for his family. His parents are not pushing him in any direction.

Hope they start pushing him about 3 hours south. ;) :)

Definitely not a wrap. Chris Mullin effect could be big here.

It should be nice to get an unofficial visit & SJU Elite Camp participation to further impress he & family.

Oddly enough, we really do, online at least. We have multiple independent message boards that have a ton more traffic daily than just about any college basketball sites. If SJU was more successful on the court perennially, I can't imagine how busy it would be on JJ and Redmen.com

Adding a pure shooting zone buster would be great, if he's willing to accept a limited role at first and work for his minutes. Can never have too many shooters.

I remember them being strong during my day...especially for a Class A team. They beat Troy one year when Troy won the AA football state championship. There are a lot of teams up there at the class A and class B level that are jokes. Amsterdam never struck me as one, but I get most of my news the two weeks a year I spend in Saratoga Springs with my sister and her fam.

Generally speaking Amsterdam is strong in football and weak in hoops

Back in my days they were strong all around, not so much. Even their football team lost to a B school. Maybe 2 of them.

I believe it was an unofficial. He has been there a couple of times unofficially, so I’m sure it didn’t do anything. Plus ND came out and saw him last year for a game, but haven’t heard much more about them. BC and UMASS are both showing the most love.

All good questions, for the staff. I'll be glad to see the seniors go. Ahmed is awful. Not a fan of Clark and his 1 rebound a game, but he's not going anywhere. Pretty sure Lovett is gone. Rumblings about Owens moving to showcase his skills. Big programs probably already in Pinds ear. Richmond most likely gone too along with others on the staff. So next year, my guess is the starting 5 will look something like this.
Dixon
Trimble
Simon
Clark
Keita

This list is laughable at worse. Ponds isn’t going anywhere and by all accounts Williams is already better than Trimble. This doesn’t even include the adding of J’raan brooks ( who I’m confident is paying a little extra to keep this commit). Just stop!
-
No shot in He)) is that going to be the starting lineup next year. The staff is already looking to fill Lovett's scholarship, and it won't be a frosh, it will be a grad transfer. Pond's is not going to leave, unless he is 100% certain that he will get drafted, or the new transfer rule will allow him to suit up from day 1.
IMO, Brooks would not be on campus for him not to start. Always a possibility, but he will start from day 1 if he is here. Keita could eventually start, but only would from day 1 if Owens were to leave.

I do not want to derail this thread about mullin, but IMO, Mullin has to do his best job recruiting this offseason with both the current players and future. The kid Girard, can not be a replacement if he were to come, he needs to be a compliment.
Biggest offseason for SJU in last 20 years. No two ways about it.

That was a sarcastic remark. I don't really care if they come back or not, would be nice to have some upperclassmen who know how to win. But if the roster is overhauled, I'm fine with that. Give me winners with some basketball IQ

If Ponds transfers, will he have to serve that suspension for those summer games he played in last year? Still waiting for that one
Best transfer recruiters? Matt? What's he waiting for?
3 of our starters are transfers in case you were unaware, and there are 4 in your projected starting lineup for next year. You're a special type of stupid.
But again, why would any bigtime programs take a risk on Ponds when he has a suspension cloud hanging over his head?

I'm hoping for a big roster turnover next year

Thanks! Why would anyone want a last place roster back
I'll play. Who do you want to see leave, who would replace them, and how would that improve things.

Exactly my point. 3 of the transfers are starters on a terrible team

Not "hoping" anything. St. John's is in last place with them, there's only one way to go.
So you think Ponds and Owens leaving would be good for the program, because "Why would anyone want a last place roster back."
That was a sarcastic remark. I don't really care if they come back or not, would be nice to have some upperclassmen who know how to win. But if the roster is overhauled, I'm fine with that. Give me winners with some basketball IQ
Ponds leaving would be a disaster. Owens leaving would be bad, as would recruits bolting. I'm not fine with any of that.

So by " big roster turnover" you meant that the seniors will graduate and the guy who quit the team won't return.
Owens and Shamorry
If Ponds transfers to another school they can rip Mullin’s jersey off the wall at Carnesecca.

I think most readers are just tired of you completely overwhelming this board... incessantly posting over and over and over - and repeating the same thing over and over. You bring no added value to the board after your first post. If you hate the coach, that's fine. Try to make that point once a day; there is no need to do it more than that.
Try to take it easy, you might save yourself from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Same School as Jimmer Fredette, think he will be ok
I know that since I live 3 miles from him. I’m just saying he wouldn’t be putting up 50 pts a night if the talent level each games was a little more and if there were any other basketball players on his team. Jimmer’s team didn’t need him to try to score on every trip. He wasn’t related to the coach. Most of all Jimmer was respected throughout the section.

2019 Joe Girard III @JG3_____ on an unofficial visit at #UConn today and watching their game vs. Villanova. The sharpshooter leads the nation in scoring at 49.8 ppg (58 in last game, 8 assists, 7 3s, 25-25 FT 🎯) for Glens Falls. @TheCityRocks #Huskies
Idc what division you're in if you hit 25-25 from the line and are averaging 50 a night you can play for my team.
Wally from cold spring harbor was to slow to play here
my friends are friends with Wally. He wasmt coming here regardless

The too slow comment was obviously sarcastic what with the great career Wally had. I heard his dad was against SJ because of the way we used Sergio Lyck a long range shooter like Wally who Lou had posting up because he hated outside shots.

You know, there was once a player who scored 74 points in a high school game. Then he averaged 8 ppg for St.John’s. At that time we didn’t have so many summer camps and tournaments to gage talent when they faced better comp. Girard must have played some tough comp at some point.

Correct! Outta Denver. He was a top 25 player in the '88 class. He became a fan of the Johnnies after seeing us beat Kentucky (Sweet 16 game) in Denver.
Sealy, Werdann, and Sproling basically gave us three 5-star signees.

Didn't this kid's dad play for Beilein? If so, this recruitment would seem to be a waste of resources after the Beilein offer. Let's be honest, the kid is better off there.

My guess is he ends up at Michigan or BC.

He must have been hard to evaluate playing at that level.

Think we were interested but think the same year we brought in Felipe and company so perception wise on both sides may not have seemed like the best fit at the time.

Can you explain what you mean by the best? Foothills Council will have what less than 5 kids excluding Joe playing D3 ball. How many points do you think Lance would’ve scored by playing in the Foothills since 8th grade. Joe is a very good ball player who would probably average 15-20 down in the city which is very good. But the scoring is bloated by the competition and “Coach Girard” running everything through him.

Looked it up. Wally one year behind Felipe. Do remember NYS Empire games Wally getting the better of Felipe at least in scoring. Dad in addition to worries about how he would be used probably didn't think there would be room for his son to shine on that SJU team.

Remember hearing things about Empire State games. Long time ago. I was in HS.
Felipe played in catholic league. Wally played against schools with 100 kids in a graduating class.
Crazy. I wish we would have gotten him. Always rooted for him at Miami. Don’t think we tried as hard as we could have. Don’t fault anyone. Sad we got Derek brown. Also got the kid from st. Mary’s tim (something) but not Wally. He was the best. Zen don didn’t get the hype that Wally did from News day.
I was a Fred Lyson fan also.

Obviously I wasn’t referring to the foothills. Has played as good as competition as possible on the aau circuit including most recently in the EYBL playing up a level. I know you are close to his family and have good info on his recruitment, but I am very familliar with Joe and his game. If you think he would only average 15-20 in the city I would disagree, but even if that were the case joe has a great vision and feel that can get lost in the shuffle while playing with GF. His passing ability is really special and will be huge for him as the talent around him gets better.

Rowan Barrett was a favorite of mine also. Just like lyson because he was from Long Island.
I had a few drinks with some tim Doyle’s HS friends around thanksgiving. They said he couldn’t believe the players behavior. All they did was smoke pot and mess around with girls in their dorm rooms. Not exactly shocking. But they made it seem excessive even for college kids.

I played against Lloyd Harrison from sewanaka. He went to North Carolina state. He also played for the Red skins and chargers. We were an ok team, with some good athletes. I tackled him once. He had like 270 yards on like 9 carries. It was comical. I was playing free safety and I couldn’t catch him on a sweep.
My point to this is my school was much better then the teams cold spring harbor played. It must have funny at times watching Wally just kill.

I played against andre hawkins of syracuse . He had a teammate tim taylor i think his name was that was 7'0 in high school. Our tallest player was 6'4. Needless to say we got destroyed every time by about 60-70.

Yea he has been averaging like 40 plus points a game each year....i think close to 50 this year.....also the competition is very weak in his section and i believe he is in Class B (NYS goes Class AA, Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D) ....still a great achievement to have this record as a Junior.

Watched joe score 60 tonight. 16-28 from field. 8 3’s. Did have bunch of turnovers.
I was there as well. I've seen him play a few times the past few seasons and wasn't very impressed. First time seeing him this season and my opinion has changed.
He's a much more complete basketball player now. I felt he was just a jump shooter in previous seasons. What I saw last night was a kid who could play at any level of college hoops.
I know some skeptics talk about the competition and I agree it's not great, but he's also not expected to score 50+ a game at the college level.
His offensive game will transition just fine. From what I saw, I would say his biggest weakness is his defense.
Recruiting side note, my son went to get his autograph yesterday and he couldn't have been nicer. My brother took my son over and they had a brief convo about recruiting. As expected he said he loved Duke. My brother threw out a St John's comment and he said he talks to Mullin every week or so and we are in consideration.

The thing I’ll say about competition is that when it improves he will not have to see double/triple teams on a nightly basis. I’ve has the opportunity to watch joe up close upward of 100 times. His passing and feel for game are great. Doesn’t get to show it as much with group he has now.
-
He is a great shooter and it amazes me teams don’t pressure him the minute he gets the ball. Probably cause most don’t have the athletes, but atleast pick him up at half court. He has no problem shooting well beyond the line. Plus he gets every call, he must average 20+ free throws. What I meant about scoring 10-15 in the city is that he would be on team with more players of his caliber. He wouldn’t be shooting the ball 38 times a game. Just like AAU where he average 10-15.
If he picks the right school he will have a nice career, if he decides to go Duke or Mich he could very well get over recruited. You have to wonder what took Cuse so long to offer with him playing with Buddy during the summer.
Very disappointing lost tonight, you can’t lose in the semi’s when you have a player like him. But that’s what happens when he is the team and they depend on him so much.

He was pretty good. He shut down Peter warrick from Florida state. Plenty of D 1 athletes do well in HS . Derek brown dominated even though Carey wasn’t very good. Amos zeroue had plenty of huge stat lines vs everyone who wasn’t Garden city ( did well vs them also). Even players like Tristan smith from amityville had some decent stats in HS. Long time ago but I watched Long Island championship on TV. Amityville killed a bethpage team. For some reason bethpage who won Nassau couldn’t stop Jason Fraser and Tristan smith. Think they lost by 30 plus
-

I'd think that most D1 athletes do well in HS. Also D2 and D3 athletes.

Thought Shalmont has a good defensive plan against him. 1-3-1 picked him up 40 feet from the hoop and always had at least one extra defender near by. Extending it 3/4 court in the second seemed to wear him down. His shot fell off in the second and still had 56 on slightly under 50% shooting. Glens falls was on the short end of the whistle which was very surprising considering they have Girard and game was in glens falls but like you said they usually get the benefit so really can’t xomplain. I would say that playing on the EYBL is different than playing in the city. The EYBL teams are comprised of the best 1-2 players on teams across the country.

Sounds similar to Kyle McAlarney. McAlarney was more than head and shoulders above his competition in Staten Island high school ball and averaged well over 40 a game I believe. He obviously had big time range also.
-
If Mullin had a son who was a player he probably couldn't even get him to commit to St Johns. The guy is a failure as a recruiter
-
He is a great shooter and it amazes me teams don’t pressure him the minute he gets the ball.

Schalmont played very well, the brothers were amazing. It was nice to see a team pick him up sooner on defense. He just doesn't have consistent help on his team. He gets double team a lot but lets admit it the 2 kids combined don't even equal the athlete he is. lol Amazing shooter, he isn't lucky. lol

Can you elaborate a little here...? With some clear cut examples...
I think the staff has done a solid job recruiting the last few seasons and played transfer game very well. They are just not going to attract 1 & done type players, St. John's has never attracted those type kids. (please don't use Mo Harkless as an example, he was NEVER expected to be 1 & done)

I don't share his stance, but Mullin couldn't close the deal on his former college teammate, Ron Rowan's son, on the son of his former NBA teammate and guy who named one of his sons after Chris, Manute Bol, and he didn't get former St. John's star Rowan Barrett's son. Missing on all three seems a bit odd...especially Bol. I mean the guy named a son after Chris.

If I’m not mistaken, these were elite recruits. Can’t blame Mullin for them. But, I’ve argued, w 1 recruiter, no reason Mullin can’t actively recruit more.

RJ Barrett and Bol Bol are the projected #1 and #2 picks in 2019 draft. I posted in the Norm days that I thought we would finally turnaround when some of our players from the 80's had 4-5 sta kids. Even Norm was able to get his high school teammste's son who was ranked too high for us then. Ponds was ranked right near Maverick Rowan.

Stud is an overreach. He played class B. He was a d1-AA football player if he went that direction. No shame in that at all.
He isn't anywhere near the talent Greg Paulus was.

This is exactly the player who kicks our asses every time.

Incredible that they come from same school and within such short time but they have much different games.

I have seen him many numerous times in football and basketball. Like I have stated in the past, Class B football and basketball is not very tough. However, he is a great athlete who is dominating against talent level well below him. He has taken advantage of it and nothing wrong with that.
I’m not sure how he would’ve done against AA schools in football. Teams have much bigger and faster guys than Class B.
Basketball - I don’t get a joy in watching someone who shots 40 plus times in a game and gets a foul whenever someone touches him and still out there shooting when they are up by 30 going into the 4th. You can count on 15-20 pts from the free throw line. He is a great passer and amazing 3 pt shooter no doubt, but again the talent level is D3 at best except the kid from Schalmont.
If Stephenson plays 5 yrs in the same league the scoring record would still be his.

I watched Girard play in Glens Falls against Johnstown High School, and yes he looked impressive. But the competition was god awful. The entire time I couldn't help but wonder what he'd look like playing against NYC schools.
-
The competition isn’t nyc level and no one will tell you it is but for the last 5 years every gameplan has been to stop him. Zones, double teams, denial, etc.. with the competition being weak keep in mind so are his teammates. I’m not gonna defend his shot selection because it can get ridiculous and personally I’ve always been an advocate for getting the best shot possible, but score 3500 points and that might give you reason to fire them up.
I don’t want to get into specifically but I know Joe personally, he loves the attention and the hate feeds him. I’m worried that at cuse he will be torn appart by pundits and opposing fans, will he ignore that and just play basketball? Or will he try to prove them wrong and perhaps hurt his game in the process? Either way, I’m going to be unfortunately rooting for cuse as long as he is there and in any game not involving us directly.
-

I've seen him a few times. He's all over the tv when I'm at my sister's in Saratoga Springs. You have to understand how bad the football is in New York in general and, within NY, how low level Class B is. I played at AA and we played one A team in my career (they finished second in the section that year) and we were beating them 42-0 in the first quarter before our starters were pulled.
I later coached one season of Class B not far from where Girard plays and I was blown away with how awful the talent was. Out of 11 kids on the field for each team...I'd say 7-8 didn't belong playing football. Out of the 40 kids on my team, I think 3-4 would have been able to be a backup for my high school team and MAYBE one could have started.
A good illustration of the talent difference between Class B and Class AA is a friend from my hometown who was zoned for a neighboring school. He broke the then NYS rushing record against a Class B team going for something like 392 yards in three quarters when we were sophs. The next week he rushed for just 16 yards against us on over 20 carries. This kid was actually a clear talent and moved to Alabama shortly after and was the state player of the year and had a great college career and a cup of coffee in the NFL.
IMO Girard is nowhere near the talent Paulus was--nor his younger brother. I always thought Paulus made a mistake choosing basketball.

Burnt Hills, a class A school has dominated section 2 football for 10–15 years and has routinely been better than the top AA schools.
With no disrespect meant I will trust my eyes and the local coaches who I’m close with. I can’t compare him to Paulus cause I never saw him play high school football.

Burnt Hills is a borderline A/AA school. Enrollment for AA football is 1025 and up. Burnt Hills has an enrollment of 1170 according to its site, so it should be AA. The difference between big A and small to middle AA schools can be negligible and overcome with good coaching and Pop Warner programs. The gap beteeen the lower divisions is much less forgiving.
Class B football schools have an enrollment of 355-584! Divide that lower # by 4 grades and multiply it by .48 for the % in boys and you get 42 boys per grade. There is no way 25 out of 42 kids can play high school football. You have theater kids, trans kids, band kids, soccer players, disabled kids, dancers, etc. in that group. You're lucky if 6-8 kids can play good football. Now compare that to 3,000 kids at a school like Newburgh, Monroe-Woodbury or some of the schools on Long Island and you can see the difference fast.
What I can say is that traveling to see my niece cheer for Saratoga Springs Pop Warner is that Saratoga Springs, which is an AA school, has the worst youth football program I've ever seen.

Burnt Hills should be AA, you have to remember when they made changes a lot of those schools in B right now were C-C/C. So right now Glens Falls is most likely one of the larger schools in the B’s.
I’m not saying he couldn’t compete with AA or A but he wouldn’t be putting up the crazy stats like he does every game.
I think he would have a better career someplace other than Cuse. There will be a lot of pressure on him. I still think BC would’ve been better actually.
People either love him or hate him here, you should see that. Some of the hate is jealously and the other part of the hate comes from how he plays and of course how his cousin leaves him in the game even in blow outs to increase his stats. Everyone respected Jimmer the person and player, you couldn’t find one person who disliked him. Joe probably had more pressure right away due to his father playing history which I’m sure wasn’t easy for him in the beginning.
Anyway, let me know if you ever want to get together. Grew up in Wilton now I live in Queensbury.

Burnt hills is half the size as some double AA schools, I disagree with you there.
Joe brings a lot of the hate on himself but it works for him, I wish he would tone it back but it has been something he’s done/had to deal with since 6th grade or so.
I moved down to Troy earlier this year but I would love to get a watch get together for those posters in the Albany/Saratoga area.

-
The enrollments become really important at the far ends of the categories. Most of the good Albany area programs seem to be close to the A/AA cutoff--on one side or the other.
Enrollment is a huge factor but it's not everything. You need a football culture and a good Pop Warner team. I've watched my niece cheer for Saratoga Pop Warner and I can say confidently that it is the worst youth program I've ever seen. I actually get bad for the kids because the coaches were clueless. It's a different world in Florida and even where I grew up in NY we had 2 and sometimes 3 teams per age group and we were all about football and wrestling. We had the worst baseball in he country.

I’m sorry you are correct, I should’ve looked it up to verify instead of believing Marillac. 😉 based on this site http://www.nysphsaa.org/ADs-Coaches/Classifications they are in the middle of A with around 750.
As you stated with his teammates being weak and the competition being weak he should score 50 pts a game when he plays 95% of the game even in blow outs, shots 40 plus times in a game and gets every whistle even when you breath on him and it’s an automatic 15-20 pts from the line every night.
The one thing that has bothered me is that teams don’t get up on him right away. Most of the times they sit back inside the 3 pt line waiting. Frustrates the hell out of me. I would say the defense is weak but I think that’s just because the competition is not even close to his level. They can’t play zone, if Joe has a skill set of 95 then the defender will be a 50 or lower most nights.
Even with everything I said he is an exceptional athlete, it will be a long time before Class B will have this type of athlete again.
Btw, even though I work with his mom I will never root for Syracuse. Lol

It’s weird the the 2 sites are so far off, maybe they are hiding 400 plus that are not athletes. Lol all kidding aside that is strange.

The states numbers are only for grades 9-11. They do not count seniors because obviously they are leaving the following year. They do not count 8th graders because you can't determine how many go to private school, etc.

Averaging 50 is great anywhere, even in the north country where the talent is sparse.

Makes sense.
Looking at their schedule...Glens falls lost its only games against A teams. They lost by 28 to Burnt Hills and were outgained 573 yards to 249. They lost to Queensbury by 14 and trailed 35-7.
I think that says it all. Then they go down and beat a downtrodden Ravena team 62-7. I actually watched my niece cheer Saratoga Springs Pop Warner in Ravena. By far the ugliest town I've ever seen and the worst football performance by a mile.

Which were the two best teams in the area. Can’t throw to himself.

Congrats to Girard, not many kids end their High School career with a buzzer beater to win a State Championship..

Freaking love it. A long time ago a Johnny jungle poster saw first hand JG miss a game winning shot and told him if you want to be the guy to make the game winner you’ve gotta be willing to be the guy who misses the game winner. What a career!

Old red kept a hell of a book. Bold letters, bright colors. Very easy to look at.
