Stud. His dad played for Southern Ct State & is indeed very close to Slice. Heron, btw, has worked out at SJU several times I believe. The same thought crossed my mind. Guess we better get Slice first. :)

From Evan Daniels

Rawle Alkins & Mustapba Heron on the same team is scary. Both of these dudes are tough & physical. Relentless attackers. Heron has made 3's.

@AdamFinkelstein: No word yet where Heron will consider but St. John's will be the buzz with Barry Rohrrsen, who first recruited Heron at Pitt, now on staff.

@GoodmanESPN: @AdamFinkelstein is there even a question on this one?

I think it'd be safe to classify St. John's as the new team to beat for Mustapha Heron. Slice Rohrssen has a strong connection to his father

Also Heron is 2016, so no reason they cant both co-exist, and protects if Jordan leaves after next year (or Sampson does)

In a perfect world you should be recruiting multiple kids for multiple years so there is a backup plan and relationship.

The days of having limited recruiting and a short roster are over.

Mustapha Heron is back on the market after being committed for nearly a year.
Heron Opens Up

When Mustapha Heron committed to Pittsburgh as a sophomore it was simply due to a connection between his father and newly hired Panthers assistant coach Barry "Slice" Rohrssen. The fit didn't necessarily make sense, but it was tough to argue with Pittsburgh bringing in a top-25 recruit. Heron - a 2016 wing prospect from Sacred Heart (CT) - is now ranked No. 23 in the nation and no longer committed to the program.

After Slice left to take the Kentucky job it seemed less likely that he would remain a Panther. Nearly a year later, Slice is on the move to St. John's as Chris Mullin's associate head coach. Heron re-opened his commitment on Friday and the Red Storm are considered to be in very good shape.

Going forward, he will play with the New York Rens (NY) and teammate Rawle Alkins. Both are highly prioritized by the new St. John's staff and this could make for an interesting scenario if one or both end up in Queens.

https://recruitscoop.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1758212

The decision to decommit Heron said was less to do with Rohrssen going to St. John's and more to do with the fact that he felt he made his decision to commit to Pittsburgh too early, and he wants to see what else is out there for him, wanting to explore his options.

In just the past 24 hours Heron admitted that he has heard from Duke and UNLV among others, though one team he says he has not heard from is St. John's, and while that may be considered a shock to some, Heron understands and says he believes that is going to change pretty soon."I haven't heard from them yet but I am sure I will hear from them soon," Heron stated.

Another interesting note is that Heron is a teammate of another St. John's target, Christ the King guard Rawle Alkins '16, on the Rens AAU program on the Adidas circuit, and that while they haven't discussed specific schools with each other, the conversation of playing together on the next level has been discussed."

Oh yeah, we talk about the possibilities of going to college together, but we both still have to do what's best for ourselves. We will just have to see what happens in the future." -

Honestly this won't be popular but I'd gladly take this commitment and move on from Rawle.  Looks like Rawle wants to drag things out and him and Heron are pretty much the same player to me just lefty and righty versions.

As of right now we will lose Chris, Sheed (likely), Ron, and maybe more depending on other additions so 3 focuses on 16 IMO should be a PG and big man in addition to Heron.

I don't feel as strongly as you do, but I agree that they seem to have duplicative skill sets.  Still, I think you take 2 top 50 talents who want to be here and figure it out

I do not want to hijack this Heron thread but he clearly wants to be here.  I don't think Rawle wants to be here regardless of how much he talks about being excited he got that SJU offer etc.  If thats the case then why mention waiting it out till Spring and not mentioning SJU at times?

Anyway Heron is the goods and looking fwd to his commitment.

I think staff has secured A suitable front court for the next few years. After this year we will have Sima and Owens at the 5 for three seasons. As well as Williams and Amar at the 4 for two seasons. Seems obvious they are gonna go guard heavy for this '16 class. Heron would better than a great start, we get him and we can afford to be somewhat patient.

I am back in the Rawle camp.  I didn't realize how smart the kid was until I heard him give an interview.  I just assumed he was like Paul Harris based on his build and game.  Not at all.

I don't disagree with Moose on this.  Very similar to Rawle.  Need to continue recruiting Rawle, but I'd be just as happy if we landed Heron and move on to other positions.  Heron is a beast of a player and would be a big prize for us.

I'm somewhat in the same boat.  Don't get me wrong, as I'd certainly take both Alkins and Heron, if he ended up working out in that manner.  But if we were to receive a commitment from Heron, then I don't know if I'd go full throttle after Alkins.  Continue to recruit him, as MCN mentioned, but particular focus on other positions.  Alkins also is openly pining for a UNC offer.  UNC is still a solid program, but I can't recall the last time I've known someone to openly mention UNC to recruit 'em.

Since backing away from his commitment to Pitt in April, Heron's phone has been burning up. He's heard from the likes of Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Cincinnati, Texas, Connecticut, Maryland and St. John's among others.

"Sometime in the next few weeks I think we'll look to cut things down and maybe set some visits," said Heron. "As far as a decision goes, it will probably be before my senior season."

Heron says that Pitt is very much under consideration. Also, he has heard the rumblings that many consider St. John's the team to beat because of the relationship between his father and Red Storm assistant Barry Rohrssen. Heron's father played professionally overseas with Rohrssen and Rohrssen was on staff at Pitt when Heron made his initial commitment.

"As of right now it is people making assumptions," said Heron. "Of course the relationship plays a big role in it. But I have to go somewhere that is best for me. It might be the best fit, it might not be the best fit for me I just have to weigh things out."

Agree.  He's basically saying that slice is and will play a huge role, but he still has to check OT out first.  Thats all good.  I'm sure by the end of the say that having Slice here as well as a starting spot, A dream teamer shooting guard as head coach and all the other things we have to offer will win out.

UCONN Rivals site has a follow up interview with Heron and Heron's father on his recruitment:

"UConn is on my list being a local kid," said Heron, who has received an offer from the Huskies and is good friends with future Husky Steve Enoch from the Class of 2015. Enoch and Heron's relationship dates back to their youth basketball days.

Heron, who took his first visit to Storrs in eighth grade, said he has spoken with UConn coach Kevin Ollie several times.

"I've talked to him, he's a good guy," he said.

Also in the hunt for Heron's services are Cincinnati, Kentucky, Texas, St. John's, Michigan State, Duke and North Carolina - the latter having upped its pursuit in recent weeks. Pittsburgh has also been rumored to remain in the mix.

Even though dad was not a major recruit coming out of high school, he does have plenty of college connections, among them Mick Cronin and assists Larry Davis at Cincinnati and St. John's assistant Barry Rohrssen, who played with Bryan Heron overseas.

"I've talked to some friends, see what they are saying," he said. "UConn is definitely on his list."

Before making a decision, Heron plans to take all five official visits, which have not been finalized, and perhaps a few unofficial as well.

"I'll make a decision before next season," he said.

He's gonna make a decision in the next few months.  I still think that Slice is all over this and we have all the goods to offer including playing time and a hall of fame coach who played his position.  Just a gut feeling but I think we are in good shape.

Pangos

per Rivals.com:

Heron was also busy playing the game the right way.

Known since early in his high school career for his ability to overpower opponents, Heron is still a power player. The southpaw takes and delivers bumps while finishing plays and is always going full speed. Now, he's added a strong skill package to go along with his power and athleticism.

Heron says that he loves James Harden's game and you can see some similarities in style. He loves to pull-up for jumpers, is a crisp passer off the bounce and he hits the glass like a bigger player. Most notably, Heron has improved his game when heading to his off, right, hand and he seems to have much more trust in his jumper.

The way he played in April and the way he played on Saturday at Pangos, Heron is going to be under serious consideration for elevation to five-star status and his spot in the top 25 of 2016 will be safe when rankings get updated in the latter part of June.

1. Mustapha Heron and Rawle Alkins position themselves for a big summer

In the Class of 2016, shooting guards Mustapha Heron and Rawle Alkins have already positioned themselves as national recruits with a chance to become future All-Americans. Both bruising East coast guards had outstanding showings at the Pangos All-American Camp and they were the two best players during the weekend.

The 6-foot-5 Heron showed an ability to score going to the hoop almost any possession he wanted and he also showed that he can create for others with the pass. While his jumper and going right (using his off-hand) are both still a work-in-progress, Heron showed that he’s more confident going to those moves than he was last summer. He’s put himself in prime position to potentially be a five-star recruit with All-American honors this spring if he continues to play like this.

As for Alkins, he was a bit more inconsistent than Heron, but the New York native had peaks that were as good as anyone at the camp. With a deceptive first step and a lot of power going to the rim, the 6-foot-4 Alkins is very difficult to stop going to the basket and he had his way at Pangos in the camp’s up-and-down style of play. Much like Heron, the jumper is still a work in progress, but Alkins is crafty scoring the ball inside of 15 feet and he isn’t afraid to finish with either hand.

Heron on his visit to SJU a month ago:

After one of his games when we got to catch up with Heron he said that he hasn't been on any visits as of late, though he did take an unofficial to St. John's a month ago and he said that they visit went very well."

I enjoyed it," Heron said about the trip to Queens, NY campus. "It was great to get to talk to head coach Chris Mullin and get to talk basketball with him. It really gave me an idea of what they are looking to do with the program and I was excited about everything when I left.

"St. John's he said is definitely in his mix of schools, but Heron added that he has recently received offers from UCLA, Mississippi State, Kansas, and Miami (FL) and that each of them are schools he is also considering along with many others at this point.

There is no Top 5 or Top 10 for Heron as of yet either with the guard saying that he won't cut down a list until after the AAU season, but that when he does cut down a list he will take his 5 official visits in the fall and make a decision sometime before his senior season on the court with Sacred Heart.

Can't visit UNOFFICIALLY in July per NCAA rules.  So you can visit up until 7/6 but they need to be official visits.

Then starting 7/6 is a Dead Period (No visits) EXCEPT of course for the 3 designated Evaluation Periods first being 7/8 thru 7/12 where coaches will be on the road.

When asked if he had an idea of where his son might be going he responded enthusiastically, "[My son's] loving SMU, Mississippi State, Auburn, Alabama, St. John's, and Maryland."

His father then outlined a loose schedule of upcoming visits saying, "We will visit all of the schools between August and September. Mississippi State will be on August 27th."

The shooting guard already took an unofficial visit a month ago with St Johns. The Johnnies must have left a lingering taste on his palate because they remained on his school list. Heron spoke to NYCHoops.net back then saying he enjoy his visit at the Queens, NY campus.

https://stjohns.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1781444

Assuming those are his final 6 and he wants to visit all of them he probably takes his 5 officials to the non-area schools.

As long as he ends up here I am fine with it. It doesn't sound like he has made up his mind like a lot of people here seem to think. We will see what happens.

Mustapha Heron - The five-star shooting guard and the New York Rens were bounced in the round of 16 at the Adidas Summer Championships by Kansas Pray 'N Play but not before Heron made his mark. The five-star rising senior shooting guard finished off a spectacular showing in Vegas going for 30 points, four rebounds and four assists. He hit deep shots, scored through contact and did everything in his power to keep his team alive. - See more at: https://stjohns.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1786112#sthash.bCOQi3FB.sWV5Zd0c.dpuf

An SEC school involved in illegal recruiting practices?   Nnoooo.  Couldn't possibly be the case.  (They always come in at the end and scoop kids up out of thin air.)  And Pearl does things like purposely mispronouncing Carnesecca's name.  And saying SJU is in lovely Jamaica, Queens.  Which it isn't.  It's just where the Fedaral Government sorts their mail.  It's in Hillcrest and Jamaica Estates.  One of the nicest areas in all of Queens.  He did this while he was at Tennessee when recruiting Tobias Harris.

#mullinmagic lol. Must be lavin. So it wasn't the "sneaker connection" as he commits to a UA school (stings even worse!) goes to show, as I've said, no one is a lock anywhere until the official visits are done. Kids get infatuated on the visit and commit on the spot, doesn't mean it can't change but I would hold our horses on yakwe, ponds and really anybody until they're at least finished visiting.  We can recover from this but make no mistake about it between the slice connection and the "inside info" being that it was 100% to be sju not too long ago! this one hurts big time

We don't have to get them all. We never had that expectation anyway. A kid wants to go to Auburn for basketball, good luck to him. To go from Connecticut to Alabama is alarming. And to do it for a garbage school in the Deep South for a coach with a history of cheating is alarming.

Still, he's not a kid from NY who jumped town to a dump like Lance did. As far as I know, Heron wasn't our local to lose. The local star came home to save his program, and I think that means he's here to keep local stars home. Ponds is the key to this class. He's the beginning. F this stupid shit. Auburn hired Bruce Pearl precisely because he wins.  Your logic is twisted.   There is a reason Miss St and Auburn hired two proven coaches because Mike Slive and the SEC made it clear they are not simply content at being a great football conference they want to be a great basketball conference as well.  Your denigrating of everything outside of the tri-state area not only pathetic but ignorant.   The fact is Pearl already won at UT a SEC football school in Knoxville but yet he shouldn't be able to get players to Auburn....

If that is the case why did Auburn fire Barbee and hire Pearl?  Because Pearl brings baggage yes but he is a great coach who wins.

SJU will be fine.   Get the 3 kids they are lined up for and then make a play in the spring for Alkins.

Even without Rawle that would be a good class but getting the others will allow them to play with house money.

We were "lined up" for Heron at one point too.  Though its a bit early to be overly concerned about 16 after a solid 15 class.

We were confident about rowan, and heron was for sure coming.  Go back as far as Sampson who we were lined up for when the staff was flying out to visit him at his home. Everybody went crazy when we put out all these offers and nobody is questioning the work ethic and all of that is terrific........ But sooner or later you're gonna have to land some of the big fish that we are favorites for.  Guess I'm just not as optimistic as you guys but with visits left on tap for yakwe and ponds, and our recent trend of being frontrunners turned bridesmaids, I'm not putting any horse before the cart.  Let's get firm commitments out of these kids and make sure lovett, sima and incoming guys are qualified. Getting the rest of the staff announced soon wouldn't hurt either. Until then consider me cautiously optimistic.

I did say we were toast when the SEC got involved, or any southern school.  And no we can't compete with southern boosters.   I knew it as soon as i saw it.  Sampson and Jarelle Martin and everyone else that we lost out on.  These places have been known to hire strippers (and even worse) to pose as undergrads to get the kids infatuated with the school.  But Pearl has this all figured out.  I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.  They come in suddenly sweep people right off their feet.  These places cheat like crazy.  Even more so in football.

@NYPost_Brazille: And for the #sjubb bridge-jumpers, they remain in great shape with Kassoum Yakwe, Shamorie Ponds and Bashir Ahmed. Relax.

We don't need a player this stupid.
Honestly, if you weren't so ignorant and senile I might be insulted by you calling a kid stupid, but alas there is a reason so all is forgiven.

He went to Auburn for basketball. If you don't think that's stupid, then you obviously are pretty stupid yourself. Nothing new here. Carry on, local nice person.

You do realize that St. John's and Auburn have the same exact number of NCAA Tournament wins in the last decade right? Auburn also has a head coach that has proved he can win anywhere, our head coach is a question mark. If we beat out Kentucky or Kansas or Duke their fans would call the kid stupid for picking St. John's over their school, and they'd be just as right as you are here

Last week I was out with two former D1 head coaches and we were talking hoops. They said Slice is the best D 1 recruiter with a brief case full of cash.  They doubted he would be successful at SJU referencing his failure at Mann College.

Pearl and Auburn just started recruiting Heron (a top 20 kid) around June or July, and swooped in and got him within a month or month and a half.  That is something Calipari, Coach K, or anyone who recruits at UNC or Kansas are capable of doing.

As, I stated before....  I'm extremely aware of the SEC boosters shenanigans when it comes to football recruiting, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least, if those same SEC schools are up to those same unethical practices when it comes to hoops.

I also stated earlier there was a some quotes from Dave that seemed to be indirectly mentioning a muddled recruitment.

Fellas, just be honest w yourselves and put things in true perspective for crying out loud. Think about the succession of events over the course of the past four months. We have Chris Mullin and his team of elite national recruiters that all have proven, tangible NYC roots on our side. I'm going to ride w these guys from year one to year four, and this is month four. I have enough faith in this proven staff to the point where a Heron commit to a shady SEC school w a proven crooked coach can't sway my confidence in what's truly going on on and off campus. #SJUBB

My guess at a minimum it will at least 2 years before we can compete for the elite high school players.

Why Auburn?

I thought Heron would be a one and done or a two and done college player.  So why Auburn?

While I was disappointed with him not going to St. John's with Slice and Coach Mullin, I still do not see Auburn as his destination.

I would have thought playing under one of the best SG in college history would have only enhanced Heron's chances in the Pro's.

I could see him going to Kentucky where everyone, including the towel guy and ball guy, were drafted.  But Auburn?

Does he think that Pearl will let him score 25 points each night, to help his pro contract?

His college choice just does not make sense.

But hey, we are talking about kids making, what amounts to, adult decisions.

Longshot. The NCAA cracked down on the hardship waiver big-time in the last few years. I keep reading quotes from him, his dad and their camp saying his Mom is "really sick". That's very subjective. I'm thinking it would have to be a near term, fatal disease for them to grant it and not sure that's the case here.

Almost the only pleasure I find in life anymore comes from other people's misfortunes. That might be because I'm an unpleasant miserable misanthrope - or it might be why I'm an unpleasant miserable misanthrope. Probably it's all wrapped up together. Anyway, I commented not to be petty, although certainly I am that and worse. I commented - ever so gently and giving you the benefit of the doubt - lest you follow down the same dark path, however unwittingly. I commented because I found what you said unseemly - even if, as I noted - you didn't mean to say what you said in the way that you said it. Because what you said was as callous as things I say when I'm trying to be callous, as I often am, because I'm an unpleasant miserable misanthrope. Huh. It turns out that I was trying to help you see the bigger picture: to save you from yourself. Turns out I'm not such a bad guy after all. Thanks for helping me realize that. I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.

Auburn transfer Mustapha Heron is headed to St. John's, he tells me. Will begin summer classes Monday. Believes he will get hardship waiver to play right away. “With the pieces we have, we definitely can be special." #sjubb

Plan is to get the waiver material in ASAP. Confidence Mustapha Heron will be eligible. School may hire a lawyer as well if there is resistance. #subb

A landmark day for the program. One of the highest rated players that we've had on campus in the era of online player rankings. Hardship granted we form one of the best front court tandems assembled in the history of our program, potentially 3 NBA prospects in Justin, Shamorie and MH.

Our depth chart just got that much more versatile and the pressure to dance in March is now through the roof. March or bust. Big East Saturday Night or bust. Get your season tickets now while you can. Props to Matt and the entire staff, WE ARE.

Watched him a bunch this year. He played the 4 for Auburn regularly. He’ll be great next to Simon/Clark/Figueroa in “small ball” lineup.

Get him eligible and we are cookin

Honestly can’t even call it “small ball”. All those guys are 6’5” or above and strong, athletic players.  We are built a bit more like a Nova team actually now, without maybe one more good big guy up front.  Our depth at spots 1-4 is fantastic... and it’s skilled depth.

Biggest week for the program in quite some time. I'm kind of expecting something terrible to happen because multiple good things like this happening in such a short amount of time aren't the norm around these parts

As a medical practitioner, the NCAA wanting to sort through his mom’s “hefty” medical record seems entirely wrong to me.  Maybe they need a diagnosis, a letter and history of visits to the doctor,  but having to look through her charts as laypeople?  Absurd imho..  it’s for a waiver to play a sport.

He’s nothing like Artest.  He’s a huge SG that can handle with both hands.  He’s not your average “good” recruit.  His physical size, strength at SG is blue-chip stuff.  More like Rashad McCants from UNC a few years back, and Heron is bigger.

Don't want to get ahead of myself here but with Heron's quotes that he would be ok sitting out a year and wants to get his degree make me think that he won't necessarily bolt to the NBA next year

He said he’s in it for the long run and seems really straight-up.  He said sit out or not he’s here.  Could always change, but I like him addressing it right off the bat..

If eligible my favorite basketball player of all-time and one of my personal heroes would appear to have a legitimate shot at coaching success.

Nothing would please me more.

Sounds very much like Artest. A little shorter but can handle, shoot, and board.

Looks like we're getting into Orlando Sanchez territory again.

We'd be luck to get Heron playing by the time Big East schedule starts.

First let me say i wish the best for his mother. This kid picking St. Johns benefits us ten fold. Having a kid of this caliber looks great for next years recruits, and if he's eligible we might have the best backcourt in NYC! I think Simon will log a decent amount of minutes at the 4 this year with our personnel.
