St John's has offered 2017 @PSAhoops big man Isaac Kante, per source
Per Corey Evans

Per Zagoria
St. John’s head coach Chris Mullin and assistant Matt Abdelmassih met on campus Thursday with Isaac Kante.
Kante, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound power forward originally from Brooklyn, is now at Putnam (CT) Science.
“They really want me to play,” he said. “They want a big that can come in right away and play and take a load off the guards.”
St. John’s lost big men Darien Williams and Yankuba Sima to transfer and on Thursday small forward Richard Freudenberg announced he will play professionally in Europe. The Red Storm now have four scholarships available.
Kante will take an official to Georgia beginning Friday and will then visit Old Dominion. He plans to visit St. John’s but has no date set.
“I’ll bring versatility to wherever I go because I’m not a one-dimensional player,” he said.
He hopes to decide later this month or in early May.
St. John’s also had home visits set with 2018 center Moses Brown of Archbishop Molloy and 2018 shooting guard Luther Muhammad of Hudson (N.J.) Catholic.

No info, but gut tells me the visit doesn't happen at all... Brooklyn kid getting a chance to play in NYC as multiple PF/C's leave and get out of his way. Just a guess...

I agree with your thinking here. NYC kid with a chance to get major minutes at sju as a freshman. That sounds pretty enticing for a kid who seems like a late bloomer in terms of offers
-
How many assists did Lovett miss because of poor hands in our frontcourt? If this kid can catch the ball, and hit shots, he'll get mad minutes. Got to like that body type, and hopefully he, Shamorie and Ahmed can chat about playing at home.

I just want a good sized PF who is athletic and plays at both ends. JPM loves this kid. Whether as a PF or a stopgap center doesn't matter. He's billed as a tough kid. He's also young apparently, even though he prepped, and is built well. Our backcourt is loaded. We need frontcourt guys. I just want a tough kid up there with a motor.

Anyone seen any recent video of him?

It could mean nothing. Ahmed had nothing. Freudenberg had several. We know how that turned out.

If kante plays for the RENs I think I'm watching him right now. Huge.

This kid seems to be right what the doctor ordered. Bash, Shamorie and IK a very tough city trio, get it done Abs!

Crazy talk. Clark has 20 lbs on this kid. His neck is 3-4 inches bigger in circumference. They aren't even comparable. Kante is a skinny did who just got some muscles recently. Clark is a LB.
-
Need to get a young big to develop. We don't want to be scrambling for grad transfer bigs every year. Although we definitely need one this year.

We had and still have young bigs who didn't develop. Get the bigs that are ready now

MC looks a like a mini Larry Johnson in that team pic, and that was 6 months ago.

To each his own. MC is listed as 6'7" 225. Kante is listed as 6'8' 220 and just as muscled in the picture. I hope we get Kante and we'll find out. If we don't then this is a wasted conversation .

Yep.

Watched some of his Putnam Science games on YouTube. Kid is built well, big, aggressive and looks like a good fit for us. Can definitely defend in situations where Owens struggles. We still could use one more grad big if we land Kante, to give us a bit more size up front.
-
Yeah he should be next then likely the next two will be transfers and not the grad transfer type.
-
Played aau ball with aundre hyatt
-

Like the get if we land Kante, but ugh to the rest. No one knows what the 18/19 season will bring, so to not bring in a proven big for next season is not ideal. Wonder if it is because we have no chance with proven bigs who can make a difference next season, or there is no one out there remaining after the top guys, that will make a difference. Maybe both. However either way, we are still short handed going into the season.
-
Yeah he should be next then likely the next two will be transfers and not the grad transfer type.
If the next two are regular transfers than the 18 class must be nothing besides Luther

Agree here.. we will still end up having space for Luther and more. Plus we have Diakite in that class already. If we get top quality transfers, we can also do very well building this thing. It's difficult from scratch and we all know that.
-

I really wanted a grad tranfer big. Owens can't play 20 minutes without fouling out. And although, I like Kante for the future, not our answer for next year.
-
Not sure what all the worry is surrounding scholarships for the 18 class. Room will be made for whoever is coming in. Even with Diakite in the picture we still have one scholarship open for 18 since Amar and Ahmed are graduating. The likely loss of Lovett opens another one. Then you have to figure at least 1 or 2 others will leave opening up more. Scholarship distribution concerns are a non-issue IMO

I don't want to hear about another Louisiana kid. We've been down that road a few times and it's fruitless

Yea besides Naz who if he gets Blue Blood offer will be hard to beat the others we aren't recruiting or haven't been mentioned with for a long time. Dave mentioned that was case with Quinerly. Wilson hasn't listed us in ages. Same for Bol. And Ayala has long lost and we haven't prioritized him like Luther

Whether we have 2 realistic targets or 10, scholarship distribution won't be an issue. Also, we will always be heavily involved in the transfer game

You are absolutely right.
Now if players can stick around 4 years and the scholarship distribution can hold true.
-
Hopefully we get some frontcourt help from Kante, Wooten or Yetna.
And maybe there is a juco or grad transfer big man still out there who could make an impact (I'm beginning to doubt that though )
I think we're all overlooking a big key to the 17-18 season. Tariq Owens.
He's gonna be our center next year even if these reinforcements do sign with us. And the best chance we have at being competitive for the post season is if Owens can be effective and stay out of foul trouble.
If we're getting 25+ mins from Tariq I think we will be just fine.
The backcourt is our strength and Clark/Yakwe should compliment each other at the 4.
The front court will rely on Owens staying out of foul trouble. That's how we get good center play. I doubt it's from a newcomer.

Agree with Owens being a huge part of next season's success. I'd add that Yakwe will also be super important. If he puts it together this offeseason and becomes what many of us thought he'd be after his freshman season then we could be in really good shape. If he is mostly useless again we'll be in big trouble

Wouldn't be surprised to see Yakwe start at Center, specifically to stretch out Owens minutes. It's very difficult to teach kids not to foul, Owens in particular because of his desire to block every shot. I f we land Kante, Yakwe had better improve or he'll ride the pines.

Would prefer that too but unfortunately the landscape has changed as you know. Was listening to sat radio the other day and the guest on the college sports station said there were 350 D1 transfers already which was ahead of last years pace when the total was over 700. He said at this rate there would be over 900 which averages out to almost 3 per school which is astounding. Counting Sima we already have 4 and more possible (AliB and who knows). On the bright side you can get rid of recruiting mistakes.

All true but look at the tournament and how seniors and juniors usually equate to long runs.

And when Kante isn’t talking to the program’s coaches, he is hearing from star guard and friend Shamorie Ponds, whom he played two years with at Thomas Jefferson before transferring to Robeson.
“He just tells me it’s a great opportunity to stay home,” Kante said. “Right now, I’m trying to get a feel of it. I know they need bigs, so there’s a great opportunity to come and play. Playing at home, that’s not an option a lot of players get.”

Former Robeson H.S. star Isaac Kante will make his college choice on May 2 between Georgia, K-State & #SJUBB per Robeson Coach Myles.

Get this kid, Dixon and maybe Cheatham.
Kante with an improved Yakwe, Owens and Ahmed add in Simon and Clark and of course Ponds and Lovett and this a team that can make a leap next year.
Then 2018 bring in 3-4 high level kids and 2018-19 it's time to think about challenging Nova at the top.

-
What's the rumor?
-
And now we are scrambling... not happy with this offseason thus far.
-
It's getting Lavin early! :(
-
What's the rumor?
The rumor is we've been eliminated from contention and he's probably headed to play for Georgia. IMO, it also looks like we're somewhat losing recruiting momentum. I'm not saying this due to potentially losing out on Kante. It's also not being able to bring in a decent or competent big this offseason. I know the staff has tried, but unfortunately they've been rebuffed.
This is why we need to bring in Rice or someone with similar capabilities ASAP, as well, as we need to be an NCAA Tournament team (or, advance deeply into the NIT, if that is where we end up), in order to gain back the momentum. Not to mention, it's also imperative that our 2018 haul is an impressive list of kids. Outside of those things taking place, then... well, you get the picture.

We need another recruiter big time. Matt can't be the front person all over. Also, I haven't seen this asked or talked about but did coach really need to have hip surgery during this time?

Not sure if we should be upset that we lost out on a 2 star recruit or the fact that we were counting on a 2 star recruit

Currently my last will and T orders Missus Fun to cremate my remains and flush them down the toilet, but she says she will not do so. Women, ammirite? In which case if my remains are interred I'm torn between

Totally shocked if true. Had not heard anything different recently.

Ouch!!!

This hurts, we need more depth in the frontcourt

We are...putting our hopes on mediocrities who let us down in the long run. Sheesh! How far we've fallen.
-
The inexcusable Jessica Turberry debacle, which had us blind while French committed to St. Louis set us back. Now we are letting homegrown kids, which were the supposed focus of our recruiting classes, slip from silent verbals. What is going on?
Our team next year has the potential to be dancing. A couple of insurance additions can solidify that. 2017 has been a disaster on the recruiting front, and we might be feeling it while in foul trouble next season. To put it lightly, we need to clean up over the next two and a half weeks before the Spring Signing period ends on May 17th.

While we're begging Kunta Kante to come...a player like 7' Mohamed Bomba ...the sixth ranked player in the country...is still on the board. He's from Harlem. Has he visited? If you have to beg somebody...beg this guy.

No
If he wanted to be here we would have been recruiting him. He is going a blue blood, next.....

Then maybe we should be in a lesser conference where we can be like Iona and go to the NCAA's by dominating who we play. You're right, we're not blue blood, so try something else.

They probably did beg him. But, not interested, means not interested. I'm disappointed w this years recruiting , but the staff isn't made up of nice persons.

Thats not what I am saying. Top 10 kids for the most part are going to go to KU, UK, Duke, UCLA, etc. Some of them we have a shot at. Bamba is not one of them. If he had interest in coming here we would have rolled out the red carpet for him. Some kids just don't want to stay home. Owens dad was on twitter the other day saying Tariq would have never come to St. john's if he was from NY, he wanted to go away to school. No use in recruiting a kid who has no interest in coming to your school.

Where do these visions come from that we ever were anything near the blue bloods. We root for a school who compiled wins. Never won the NCAAs. Won two NITs when dunking wasn't allowed and the three pointer didn't exist.
The game has changed. We are what we are. Accept it and hope one day we can be like Butler or Nova or continue to live in constant disappointment

What makes you think we would dominate in a lesser conference? If we were recruiting with only a lesser conference on our resume we would get even lesser talented players and be mediocre in that conference. We are, we remain and always will be...St. John's.

My guess is Mullin and the rest if not most of the coaching staff would stay. That would give us an edge over the lesser schools. Face it. We haven't belonged in the Big East since Jarvis left with the exception of one or two Lavin years. The NCAA invites seven BE teams out of ten to the dance and we're sucking hind tit again. Now we have the greek chorus hoping we're a bubble team or maybe NIT worthy. Does anyone have a better idea?
-
Does anyone have a better idea?
Yes: be less awful than Seton Hall.
-
Why all the tears over a 2 star recruit? Plenty of them around. It's not
Ike this guy was getting St. John's over the bubble hump anyway
-
Are there any bigs Iona passed on that may be decent for us?

Missing Slice yet?

Jessica really is responsible for a lot of churning and question marks on this team. For example...
Lets say we weren't recruiting Jessica, would Sima finish out the season and be part of a core returning this year? Or did he hear he was being recruited over and that was the final nail?
All the lost recruiting time and resources spent on trips to Florida to babysit Jessica, perhaps better spent recruiting bigs who qualify.
Did we actually lose a 7' 240lb center and whiff on getting a big from the 2017 class, because of Matt recruiting Jessica?
-
Missing Slice yet?
+1. Everyone was quick to anoint Matt and diss Slice based on year 1 performance, but recruiting is a tough business. The powers that be should have figured out whatever was needed to appease Slice and keep him. He is the recruiting ace who had a much longer track record and success, after all....

Of course. But as Moose says, Slice didn't graduate from St. John's.

This is completely without knowledge of anything but I get the sense that Slice was consistently going after big name kids. He was always linked to the Terrance Fergusons, Thon Makers, Rawle Alkins, etc. While Matt went after less hyped prospects (ones not ranked in the top 25 of the class) and going after transfers and doing things different.
It was very obvious that both had different recruiting styles and I'm sure many felt the way that I did in that Matt's "strategy" was a better fit for the type of program St Johns runs and wasn't that disappointed to see Slice go (Especially after striking out with those 5 star kids)
Maybe it was just me who felt this way.
I jumped off the Slice hype train when he couldn't land us Heron who was the one supposed recruit he had 100% in the bag.

. You make a valid point. Too bad we couldn't keep both, since we are paying both.(Slice and Matt)

Because the hobbit is a millennial narcissist that traded info for good press.

I'm sorry but I can't blame Matt for slice departure. It's on coach mullin to do whatever to make sure both are happy and most of all the guy w the track record who gave up the gig at Kentucky. Mullin, not matt, dropped the ball on slice and I don't even need to know any details to believe that. Time to hire a true slice replacement (and that is no shot at Mitch).
