@NYDNSports: BREAKING: Chris Mullin to become St. John’s coach, accepts job via @RogRubin and @FisolaNYDN http://t.co/zsQhTMtEXz http://t.co/hL47LsKQLl
-
Very excited about the hire. Can't wait to see who joins the staff and who they go after in the next few months. Exciting times in Johhny land.
-
Jeff Goodman also hopping on and confirming
-
May God be with you Chris Mullin.
-
Great day for the Redmen !
-
Curious as to the terms - will they be made public?
-
The only way I was going to be satisfied with letting Lavin go was if we got a replacement who was better or had potential to make St. John's a power again. I think we got him.
-
Curious as to the terms - will they be made public?
No it's a private institution.
-
Good day to be a Johnnies fan
-
Saw the white smoke coming out of Utopia and Union. At last--the "Fat Lady" sings. Can't wait for presser on Wednesday
-
Great news!

Zach Schonbrun @zschonbrun 7m7 minutes ago
St. John's opened its checkbook for Mullin, I'm told. Contract is worth over $2 mil/year. Lavin was at $1.8 mil.
-
I don't think SJU has to open their checkbook up too much because I think donations rise substantially

Yep

Donations rise substantially. Season ticket orders. Total ticket sales. This will probably end up being a below market deal compared to Lavin when its all said an done.

@BrandonTierney: SJU needs to do this right...w/Mullin will come an infusion of legit Wall Street money. The boys will back the program like never before...
-
I'm not sure this was posted yet.... But I particularly liked this quote from Tarik Turner:
Mullin and his staff can get out on the recruiting trail as soon as the weekend of April 10-12 and again April 24-26. There is a contact period April 17-23, and the late signing period begins April 15.
“He knows that, he knows that,” Turner said. “He’s ready to hit the ground running.”[/u]

I thought this was interesting, especially the history, and how it led to this decision.
-
Pretty darn good story on Chris! Impressive!
I think she is right on about the fan base coming to life, both physically (to attend games) and financially (donations).
-
Just heard Mark Jackson with Michael Kay--He is extremely positive about Chris coaching at SJU. said Chris probably knows more than any coach he has dealt with. Talked about what Louie did for the players--more than coach but also made them men with life experience. Believes Chris will do the same (hear that Rasheed).
Mark deflected the question about his becoming coach 5 years ago or currently with wonderful handling. Last question was regards to 1985 and Kay said he felt we would have won it all if Mark started which he handled like a well school politician but we know and agree with what he really feels :)

Mike Moses LOL
Same with Bobby Kelly starting over Kevin Williams LOL
Louie had his favorites !

I know a lot of family that went to SJU and they are already talking about getting together to go to one game and even some of them are talking about donating to the program...That's just at the basic level. If he can hit the ground running he can really draw in big donors and alumni.

Ironically Lavin got crushed for teaching life lessons, making men. It's all about the W's

Underperforming and having no team for next year with one year remaining on a contract didn't help either...

Lavin was good to the kids, probably too good that some took advantage.
Better for a coach to be tough and fair, a good balance
Has anyone watched the Dean Smith documtary, wow his players loved him.
But again it gets down to the W's as Dave alluded to

he's already performing next week.
anything like this past year is fine by me.

The President sent a letter to all students and staff to invite them to the press conference tomorrow. He also encouraged everyone to wear red to welcome home Mullin.
Exciting times to be a Johnny!

Yes, because a coach does not make basketball players into men. He makes them into better basketball players. Sometimes.

it's not who we heard of, but who the students would know and like. There was a discussion like this for Turgeon first MM too - lol. I knew who J cole was because he was just emerging on the scene. He played at UK's MM At that time. I think Drake performed there too

Thank you. He is making a nice splash in the music world. Probably Poison didn't know he also is a SJU alum. Anyway, I just threw out his name because one of his songs was playing on the radio as I was typing.

Ironically Lavin got crushed for teaching life lessons, making men. It's all about the W's
He got crushed because when he failed to meet the fan's expectations (insert your own expectations here), he chalked it up to the importance of making boys into men RATHER than winning, as if that mattered more. Had the team won, and he preached the part about making boys into men, then people wouldn't have got on him about it (Backing up your point about winning). I think people got tired of the propaganda ... always spinning the positive, but never being critical of the negative. As if it was a sin to point out his own failing, without backing it up with excuses. Anybody will put up with someone's faults when things are going well, it's just human nature.

They won't ever play again without Yauch - Mike D mentioned it last year.
If it's me, a good option is The Roots since they're right in NY. Jump out after Fallon, and head over - lol Best lyrics out there in their genre

I stepped in late but caught Mullin's comments and the Q and A. This was AWESOME.
Mullin speaks about St. John's like you hear Coach K speak about Duke and Dean Smith (and Roy Williams) spoke/speak about UNC. Those programs are basketball royalty and have each created a family which takes care of its former players, etc. For years, WE (St. John's fans AND St. John's coaches) have said we are basketball royalty and talked about our place and history, but coming from the basketball coach/staff it didnt seem to ring true, and honestly, I dont know how many of US truly believed it anymore. When Chris Mullin talks about it, not only do I believe, but I feel it. It is obvious. And I don't think it's just obvious to us as St. John's fans. It's obvious period. It's going to be obvious to the AAU coaches, the HS coaches, the kids, the players etc. There is already a different aura around the program. If we act like we are, and we believe we are, WE ARE.
WE ARE...
-
That was great. Home Run.
I don't think he could've done any better. To put this in perspective, I called my parents who are well into their 70s and told them the channel and to watch. My mom called me halfway through to say how great it is and it brought memories back to my father who is in beginning stages of Alzheimer's. Great things

A few years younger than Mullin, love that Lou still calls him Mo. That was all we called in my neighborhood growing up. Never heard him called that after St. Johns career. Anybody know the origin of that knickname?
-
That press conference was great. Home run... Gempesaw was clear as to why he wanted Mullin. Can sense the true love that Mullin and the rest have for the school. Mullin is a straight shooter. Could even sense the pride from Tarik when he was on the mic. We handed the keys to the program to the program's biggest fans, and more than capable ones at that. Very proud day. Hire a great staff and I know we will get this thing done.

@AdamZagoria: Chris Obekpa Meets Chris Mullin, May Apologize for Suspension http://t.co/yi7D7gnQSN
Good to hear about Obekpa. He needs to apologize to the SJU community. The timing of his offense was the egregious part because it let everybody, especially his teammates like D'Lo, Greene, Sir'Dom down... The fans as well. Fwiw, I doubt Mullin and staff would say no to having him back, especially with the history CM has. Chris O needs to come clean though.
-
Great job by Chris and whole staff putting this great press conference together. Thought be did an excellent job. Unfortunate that Rysheed a no show? That's pretty ridiculous.
-
Just got back from the press conference so many alumni players there. Anthony mason, Malik boothe, Walter Berry, Pete D'Alessndro the GM of the Sacramento Kings. Obekpa was there along with most of the retuning players. RYsheed was a no show thought unfortunately.

That's great to hear about all except Rysheed. Can't imagine that bodes well for Rysheed's return, but without knowing what is going on at home and whether or not him and Mullin have talked yet, and how open he is to dedicating himself, I guess we still have to wait and see. Would have guessed Rysheed and Obekpa would have flipped who was there and not, but encouraging on Chris O.

It's the last day of classes before Easter break and his m.o. is to head back to Philly during all big breaks. I would have felt much better if he was present, but no player is bigger than the team. If he won't grow up, we're better without him.
-
This may be prisoner of the moment, but watching the press conference I got a real Rex Ryan-like feel from Mullin. In terms of how can you not want to play for him. He said the right things and he sounded genuine. It wasn't a bunch of lines like Lavin.
I was at Lavin's press conference, this was night and day.
So excited.
-
Just said on Francesa that he wants to get in shooters that can space the floor. Sounds better than getting athletes.

I already like his focus. Shooters everywhere. We will be a fast paced scoring team, no doubt and have guys here that can gun.

-Great Job by the school to open it up to the public.
-The really big hire was the President and the way he is setting the tone for the school.
-It was awesome when Dr. Gempeshaw said I want all my employees to be like Chris. You have arguably the two most important positions that want to be at the school.
-love the terms our city and our St. John's. This is our team.
-
Great show! Exciting times for sure.
BTW before we crush Rysheed, its 1:30 on a wednesday. Perhaps he had class, the same place many posters were wondering if he has been to since the conclusion of the season.

Disappointing, but fine by me want to get past all the BS and uncertainty he brings. I wish him the best, but" time to s**t or get off the pot."

I was reading something about Mullin online, I did not know that Chris's wife was his girlfriend at St Johns and that she was mugged walking home from a game.
The friend she was with was murdered in the altercation.
Unbelievable.

Not enough credit is being given to Sister Margaret Fitzpatrick, who I wanted to be President before Bobby got the job. She was thanked a few times for her guidance and input during the press conference.

he was at the rec center (Philly) from what he tweeted. while i would like him back, i just don't think he is willing to change. plus as an upper classmen, he'd have to be the role model for the new guys. not a good example to follow. i think he's gone.

much respect for Dr. Bobby for giving Lavin credit. Whether you like Lav or not, he did make things better. i was surprised we didn't hear from Mullin giving any praise.
-
Really enjoyed being at the event--more than a press conference. wouldn't be surprised if attendance was 1,500. Chris already generating revenue as I noticed a number of folks (who were probably not alive when he played here) buying replica #20 jerseys. Agree that our new president handled himself well. Was pleased that Tarik was the emcee. A lot of old timers came out for the school which was important.
Let me correct an earlier poster who attributed a quote to Chris "Peacock today; feather duster tomorrow". That quote originated with Joe Lapchich. Louie told a story going back to 1968 when Joe gave him some very simple coaching advice. He took a laminated card out of his wallet when giving his chat and noted that Joe had given it to him in 1968 over drinks at Danny's Hideaway (old timers will remember the name). Joe used that phrase with his players in the beginning of every season with his players (and Louie carried on the tradition) when he gave them a scrap book with news articles of the point shaving scandals of the early 1950's which involved star players being led out in handcuffs. Louie didn't say what was on the card that Joe gave him; Chris read it later in the presentation. He also used it to talk about the tradition of SJU that he wanted to instill from Buck Freeman to Frank McGuire to Joe to Louie.

Not enough credit is being given to Sister Margaret Fitzpatrick, who I wanted to be President before Bobby got the job. She was thanked a few times for her guidance and input during the press conference.

Maybe people thought she was too busy building the San Antonio Spurs dynasty to have enough time for input at Si. John's. :)

That was great. Home Run.
I don't think he could've done any better. To put this in perspective, I called my parents who are well into their 70s and told them the channel and to watch. My mom called me halfway through to say how great it is and it brought memories back to my father who is in beginning stages of Alzheimer's. Great things
Sorry about the tough time for your dad and your family.

I'm sorry to hear that Marco. I hope things turn out all right.
Thanks brother! Sucks watching your parents get old. But I'm lucky to still have them. My wife is heading to Indy for the Final 4, I'll be watching with the parents
Damn man sorry to hear that. My grandfather had it. Really sucks. Enjoy the time with your dad while you can. Wish I spent more time with my grandfather. Still feel guilty about it 20 years later

Prayers to you and your family Marco.

Chris Mullin isn't just extending scholarship offers. He's giving out invitations to programs all over area to visit #sjubb

Obviously, that happens once workouts begin and staff is in place. But Chris Mullin wants to make it known everyone welcome at #sjubb

You may have crushed your keyboard, but you still produced one of your best pieces.
I laughed at your Mrs Foad list, and had a creeper tear at how you described Chris' mission.
You won't be able to write too many bad things about a coach who will put his heart and soul into his vocation. Louie is correct.

It's pretty much a dream... He's been in place for a few days and he's changing the landscape. I am a skeptic but I've been awestruck the last few days. I love Abdelmessih coming back home for one. I also love Mullin touching base and offering guys that are obvious high major choices no matter what. He's not reaching... Staff's love it though and Mullin wants these kids. Good times ahead... Gut tells me so...

A lot of truth in there about Lavin. The complacency factor and the fact that he thought he was fooling everybody with his dumb, waxing poetic couldn't be more spot on. Nicely done.

Quick update as to what I know...Like I stated earlier last week only 1 asst on board...nobody else has accepted...yes offers are out and most(not all incl 2 GOOD ones) have been mentioned here.
Recruits.... They think Sampson will stay but don't seem worried either way. This whole thing about Diallo is silly...he nor his camp never said they wouldn't meet to take a meeting or talk to Mullin...kid was playing in the AA game and still processing everything ..STJ will gets its chance...no he hasn't made up his mind to come here or not...FACT
Current Players...They want both Chris and Jordan back and believe both will return
Transfers...They REALLY want Lee and with good reason, he fits they style they will be playing perfectly.....

Right, who would have thought the guy who laughed at people for wanting to get rid of Norm Roberts after a 4 year league record 19-47 would make the case for not accepting mediocrity.

I didn't laugh at people, I laughed at you, because you're a nitwit. I am however pleased that whatever trolling I did 7 years ago now re Norm got so far under your thin skin that you feel compelled to mention the butthurt at any slight provocation. Rest assured that I feel the same affection toward you that Pavlov felt towards his dogs.
Regarding my little BEB monkeyshine, what I said about Lavin is that he's a horrible coach and a pretentious new age gasbag and that he should not let the door hit on the way out. What I said about Mullin is that I'm excited that he's here, that I expect him to do well, and that I wish him the best. As one who felt the need to make a very public and embarrassing apology about his support for Lavin I'd think you'd share those sentiments.
-

Yes because Lavin was one of the worst coaches here. I believe most people who wanted to keep Lavin here was worried that the admin couldn't make the right choice. On paper they did, I believe this will be great. Let's hope we get the recruits we have been craving and wins to show.

He mentioned him a few times, i know on day he was announced he mention Nelson on francesa's show.
-
They will be running a pro-style set...and off the court he has been promised certain chnages that will help both on and off the court product
I think the reason why you run a pro style set in the pro's, and a college style set in college, is because those styles are more appropriate, and therefore more effective, for their respective levels. That's what works on those levels , hence the names. Now if you have Pro style talent it would work, but then again, if you had that kind of talent, it wouldn't matter what style you played. The only good thing I can see about this is it might impress wide eyed recruits. But to tell inferior talent to just "go make a play" isn't going to get it done.
-
Not an expert on don Nelson. From what i remember the scores a lot of points but didn't win that many games. Mullin talks about scoring, shooting, and offense. But also talks about defense and being mentally and physically dominate. No more shitty zones. We are going to be tough to play against. And we are going to score.
-
Didn't win too many games? I believe he has the most wins of any nba coach in history. Also the most losses and no rings go figure. I just found it interesting he never mentions Don but wants to run a similar style. However erickthered says he mentioned him in the media I must of missed it, thought there maybe bad blood.

Mullin credits Nelson for saving his life and his career...but they didn't end on the best of terms after the breakup of Run TMC. Mullin ended up in Indiana.
As far as what we can expect, Mullin has already spelled it out. Mostly freelance. Throw away the playbook. He said that was the secret of Run TMC. It'll be an NBA running style and he says don't look towards the bench when you're running a play. The key won't be X's and O's...Mullin says you win with players.

Chris Mullin turned down an NBA head coaching job with the Sacramento Kings back in December, later choosing to accept the task of taking his alma mater, St. John's, back to national prominence.
Mullin, 51, is the program's all-time leading scorer and also helped lead the Johnnies to the Final Four back in 1985.
However, much has changed since his playing days -- and turning the program into a national contender won't be easy. Here's a look at what Mullin inherits, how he will recruit and the program's overall outlook under his leadership.
What Mullin inherits
Shooting guard Rysheed Jordan averaged 14.1 points and 3.7 rebounds last season for the Johnnies. Icon Sportswire/AP Images
Mullin doesn't inherit much, but sometimes that's not altogether a negative.
The Red Storm will lose four seniors, including leading scorer D'Angelo Harrison. Sir'Dominic Pointer, Phil Greene IV and Jamal Branch are also gone. Defensive-minded big man Chris Obekpa hasn't made a final decision whether he'll be back, though it appears that the team's second-leading scorer from a year ago, Rysheed Jordan, will return.
Obekpa is a nice piece -- if he returns. He won't provide much in terms of offense, and he considered leaving a year ago. Jordan is the X-factor in a sense, largely because he's so talented, yet so enigmatic. He's struggled with off-the-court issues, but maybe Mullin and the new staff can help in that regard.
The key question is who else rounds out a roster that needs bodies. Thus far, the Johnnies have added Tennessee transfer Tariq Owens, who will have three years remaining after sitting out the 2015-16 season; Darien Williams, a junior college prospect who was committed to Iowa State; and 6-foot-11 Yankuba Sima, a three-star center who performed well at the European Championships last summer for Spain's U-18 team.
It could be a long first season for Mullin, but that was to be expected no matter who took over, since former coach Steve Lavin was leaving the cupboard close to bare.
How Mullin will recruit
Landing five-star recruit Cheick Diallo would be a huge addition for Mullin & Co. Mike DiNovo/USA TODAY Sports
Mullin's name will carry weight with the parents and coaches of high school prospects, but obviously that's not enough in recruiting. However, he's hit the ground running at St. John's, starting with the hire of assistant Matt Abdelmassih, who developed a reputation as one of the best transfer recruiters during his time at Iowa State. Mullin also convinced Barry "Slice" Rohrssen to leave Kentucky to come join the staff at St. John's.
While the third assistant spot is still open, Abdelmassih and Rohrssen bring enough to the table in terms of relationships and connections that the Red Storm aren't starting behind the eight ball. Plus, since Mullin came aboard, St. John's has already landed the three aforementioned transfers in addition to commit Samir Doughty from the incoming class.
While St. John's will continue to look for transfers to round out the roster for next season, there's been no secret regarding the Red Storm's biggest recruiting target: five-star power forward Cheick Diallo (No. 11) from nearby Our Savior New American (New York). St. John's has been among his five finalists for a long time, but the Red Storm weren't among the leaders until Abdelmassih and Rohrssen were hired. You see, Abdelmassih was the lead recruiter for Diallo at Iowa State and Rohrssen was the lead recruiter for Diallo at Kentucky (and previously, Pittsburgh). Will that be enough to make up ground on Kansas? The two sides met over the weekend, and a decision should be coming soon.
Moving forward, St. John's has already targeted a long list of players in 2016 and 2017 -- mostly guys in New York and New England, as well as No. 8-ranked junior Edrice Adebayo from North Carolina. If this were eight or 10 years ago, it would be imperative to lock down New York City in terms of prospects. While that's still going to be a goal for Mullin's staff -- and having two assistants with New York ties in Abdelmassih and Rohrssen will help -- there's not enough consistent talent coming out of the city to make it one-stop shopping when it comes to recruiting for St. John's. Expect them to hit the transfer market on a regular basis, as well as secure kids from New York's surrounding areas (e.g. New England, the mid-Atlantic, New Jersey, etc.). With that said, the school's biggest targets in 2016 will likely be AAU teammates Rawle Alkins (No. 28) and Mustapha Heron (No. 23). Alkins is a physical wing from nearby Christ the King (New York) whom Mullin, Abdelmassih and Rohrssen met with last Friday. Meanwhile, Heron recently decommitted from Pittsburgh -- where Rohrssen originally recruited him.
Mullin and St. John's have certainly come out swinging on the recruiting trail, hitting the transfer market and aiming high in their pursuit of high school prospects. Diallo will be a huge indicator for the Red Storm: If they are able to land him, it gives them a ton of momentum going forward.
Mullin's name recognition is there with parents and coaches -- and it will start growing with potential prospects.
The verdict
Can Mullin return the program to its past heights? AP Photo/G. Paul Burnett
St. John's is optimistic that the Mullin hire will follow the blueprint of Iowa State's decision to bring local hero Fred Hoiberg home to coach. Neither had any college coaching experience, and both were plucked from an NBA front office.
However, Iowa State and Hoiberg were fortunate for several reasons. Hoiberg inherited Melvin Ejim, who developed into one of the best players in the Big 12. He also added maligned transfer Royce White, who helped lead the Cyclones to the NCAA tourney in Hoiberg's second season, and identified Georges Niang as a rising star before anyone else.
Mullin will likely wind up following a similar blueprint: going the transfer route early and also mixing in local talent.
He's brought on two assistants with local ties in Abdelmassih and Rohrssen. Abdelmassih helped get White to Iowa State and was key in getting multiple transfers to move to Ames. Rohrssen was on the staff at Pittsburgh on two occasions, and spent last season with John Calipari at Kentucky. He left Lexington to return home to New York and help his friend and fellow Xaverian graduate, Mullin.
But this isn't an easy job.
There's a reason why no shortage of coaching candidates turned it down the last time it was open -- before it was offered to Steve Lavin. The talent in the area isn't what it it used to be, and it's not as though kids grow up dreaming of playing for the Johnnies these days. There's been little tradition over the last couple decades.
This isn't to say Mullin won't get it done, but it's not going to be easy -- and will take some of that Hoiberg luck.
-
As far as what we can expect, Mullin has already spelled it out. Mostly freelance. Throw away the playbook. .
Better stock the roster with NBA talent if you want to play like that. You can't just tell kids to just "go make a play",; it won't work.

Didn't Lavin try to do the same thing, albeit while using annoying metaphors and Lavinisms like hammer to the rock, salt the win away, etc.?
-
You win with players. X's and O's is overrated.
-
You win with players. X's and O's is overrated.
I generally think so too, but you also have examples going the other way, such as a Brad Stevens coaching up a Butler team that goes deep into the tourney against teams with supposedly more talented players.

Thanks for posting.

I think it's incorrect to assume the NBA is more free-lancing.
I heard an nba guy on the radio the other day, Jay Williams? Kenny Smith? I forget
But they said that a much larger percentage of your plays are signaled from the sidelines in the NBA than when they were in college.
It surprised me to hear that.

True but the plays are really one or two quick options opposed to a continuation type set.

Yeah, it's not exactly rocket science out there. They iso, pick and roll, pick and pop, etc. The college game has much more intricacies. The NBA also has more games stoppage.

Funny because Franny fraschilla says the nba much more complex than college. Mullin isn't going to be throwing away the playbook but also isn't going to be the guy who will run set pieces every time down. Mullin himself that he will set up an intricate offense. He just wants to build it where his players learn to actually make decisions and identify. Will need guys on this team who are good shooters and understand the offense and how it works.
It's why Wisconsin was so good this year. Bo Ryan had smart players who could all shoot and all understood what to do on the court. It wasn't all slow down and set plays like in the past.

Great point.

Awesome by D'Angelo. Fwiw, after D'Lo tries his hand at the pro game, I'd like to see him maybe come back and get a spot on coaching staff somewhere. Maybe work his way up. I love his fire, the way he has matured over his career and I think he has the demeanor to become a big asset down the line. Hope he stays involved with the program.

Just saw my younger sis for the first time in a while back home. Manhattan and Nova grad, but loves SJ's since she's held a basketball too. Her and her husband are pumped. It's anecdotal consensus for me - it's genuinely huge all the way around.

While I wantedto see him throw out the first pitch in Queens, maybe Coach Mullin is just a Yankees fan and would rather throw out the first pitch for his favorite team.

According to Coach Abdelmassih (who is a diehard Mets fan), Coach Mullin roots for the Mets, but doesn't really follow baseball too strongly. Abdelmassih was pushing to get Mullin to do a Mets game first, but, apparently was unsuccessful.

Mullin is a Mets fan. He and the 84-85 team visited the Mets clubhouse several times because Jay Horowitz was a huge St. John's fan. Ron and Keith were talking about it the spring training game the day Mullin was hired. Mullin isn't the biggest baseball fan according to Matt A, like LoganK pointed out. This just comes down to logistics.
In any event, it could be a good way to get some more people interested in St. John's by reaching out to both teams.

Yankee Stadium has Syracuse advertisements around the field....This shows that if want to be in the stands go to Cuse. If you to be on the field and own this city, you gotta be a Johnnie.

Horowitz is attached to tweets on twitter from time to time regarding St Johns.

I hope someone at SJU tells Chris to really mess up the throw. A strike gets no air time. A major fail gets played over and over for added exposure :)

Or maybe he will do one like the ESPN video of him making a basket off the wall off the ground and in--Can he do it off first base. off the dugout railing for a strike,

The most dramatic change thus far with the new staff is the approach to the roster. They want to use every roster spot for a player that will contribute. There doesn't seem to be a lot of projects or package deal guys. They are really showing a lot of foresight and planning. You'd have to think the NBA experience guides their approach--things like bad contracts, expiring contracts, etc. are always in the minds of NBA execs when decisions are made.
I love how we are all over the transfers. That is something that just has not been a part of the SJU recruiting plan since I've been a fan. I don't think Norm got a single transfer from another D-1 school. Lavin was really just a few transfers away from making three or four trips to the dance.
The grad transfer rule will be a big weapon with this staff in place. Let's hope it isn't changed for a long time.

Pretty sure the grad rule changes next season. Good think we got a piece of that pie before it was all gone.

I think they will change the rule to force the graduate transfer to sit out a season before playing, but I think it will survive. I hope they keep it in its current form, because a lot of basketball coaches like Mike Brey don't even consider grad transfers. It's a smaller pool of competitors and we've got Matt A and Slice.

Wow the Wilpons really know how to create goodwill. This would almost make Dolan look like a "mensa" qualifier compared to Fred and Co.
Wilpon--SELL THE METS to a real baseball owner NOW before you ruin the team anymore. I will not be heading to CITI anytime soon and I have been a Met fan since 'day 1" in 1962.

I get it. The Mets are strapped for cash, and Wilpon's careless investing is the reason why. But, as a long time NY baseball fan, I liken this situation to George Steinbrenner in 1990. Had George been there in the early 90's, he would have most likely traded away what eventually became the foundation for several championship teams.
Wilpon, by investing like a f'n nice person, has actually helped the Mets probably more than he would have if he actually had big money to burn. Because when the Mets have money to burn, they spend it on shit, and they do it with a consistency that only they could maintain. When was the last time the Mets made a big free agent signing, and then that signing turned out to be a good idea?
Correct answer: NEVER
At least now they have an MLB roster and a farm system stacked with guys who throw 97.
-
Yes, the Mets have incredible young starting pitching. However, they also have a crap lineup and an abysmal middle infield. They could have remedied both, but we all know why they didn't. Such a shame, because the window is there for them to own this town. Can't believe there are still Wilpon apologists out there. I will of course still root for Harvey and co.,but unfortunately I will continue to do so from my couch.

If Wilpon was half the astute business man he claims to be, he would have seen through Madoff's BS. There are many folks who would have told you that Madoff's returns were too good to be true and advised their clients to avoid him like the plague. Because we are a litigious nation folks were unwilling to go public with their opinions and just communicated with their customers. Wilpon was too greedy to even question Madoff and got what he deserved. Wilpon showed all the business acumen of Dolan and since both are ruining professional franchises in our city they should be made to sell them now.

Wasn't Delgado a free agent signing? Albeit nine years ago, but I think he was a free agent.
-
I don't care that he is cash strapped, through his own financial ineptitude, but sell the team, don't hold the fans hostage. He wants to have his cake and eat it too.
-
Foremost part Beltran was a good signing for them. The way you build a solid organization is threw the draft and stock piling talent in the minors, so you can bring those guys up. Along with trades and free agents. You need all three to be a winner. The only time the Mets did it the right way was from 1980-1988. After that Cashen dismantled the team. Mind you Fred Wilpon gained 50 pct ownership after the 1986 Title. When Joe Mac/Phillips built the teams of late 1990's they fleeced the system though Piazza and Leiter trades were much needed.

@AdamZagoria: St. John's coach Chris Mullin will throw out the first pitch at Wednesday's Yankee game.

I love what Mullin is up to paying lip service to round up them New Yorker. It would appear if all goes well his first team would have three Europeans and three Africans

There aren't any New Yorkers left this part of the year. Like zero. Get the best players. When Mullin talks about keeping the best New York players home, it isn't lip service. There just has to be some decent ones available which there aren't now.

From Twitter, Mullin said he doesn't have plans to announce the 3rd assistant any time soon.
Also, Jordan's grades have not come in yet, and in regard to Jordan wanting to return 'As far as I know'.

Mullin looks great in a Yankees jersey.

I bartend also. I was working a fancy wedding. Cocktail hour was busy. I was working with my head down. But I was hearing the guests talking about the 86 mets. They were thanking this one guy. Fred Wilpon. He ordered multiple tangery and tonics- no tip. Nothing surprising me with him or the mets. Guy has billions and didn't tip a buck.
What a lowlife.

I notice Monasch...with his red St John's shirt is the only one not smiling...and leaving the field alone. I guess he was given the news before his trip to the Bronx.

When Slice was growing up in Brooklyn, he must have been a Jewish mobster wannabe. Dude is always decked out, even for this first pitch event. Mullin was chilling in a T-shirt - lol

He forgot to add this to the fill the roster commentary: Don't let your student gov't and Prez and counsel vote to force out your best, most electric player due to unfounded rape allegations, smearing his name in the process (and costing oodles of money in a settlement).
