Stanley Johnson, 6’6, Mater Dei (2014) – didn’t have the best weekend in terms of scoring but did end up with two double-doubles in two nights. The sophomore already has a grown mans body, scary to think what he is going to look like in a year or two. His offensive game is way ahead of his age, has the ability to put the ball on the floor, finish through contact and stroke the jumper. He’s had tough time against quicker athletes’ as he’s having trouble getting get by defenders and guarding them. All the talent is there but he needs to play within his abilities before he develops bad habits. His rebounding prowess is unbelievable, always finds himself around the basketball. Johnson said that Washington has been recruiting him the hardest with USC and UCLA close behind. He wants to go to a school where it’s the right fit for him as in terms of the location, the team and the coach.

A future front line of McCullough Lawrence and Stanley Johnson would be unbelievable.

Bigger then I thought. Already 6'7 and probably still growing. Good sign we already got a visit too

Katin Reinhardt should be a top 25 player. He's 6'5 and better than some of the guards I saw in the MCD AA game

Hopefully we try to get in the hunt for Johnson. Getting big time looks! Early, but competition looks daunting!

“@TheRecruitScoop: Arizona's Sean Miller & an assistant saw 2014 Oakland Soldiers (CA) SF Stanley Johnson workout today. Syracuse was in on Monday.”

the key is we have to be able to show we can get bigs playing at next level.  PlAying time is not always the answer
Even though we had a monster class in 2011.  recruiting numbers will dwindle but as we saw with harkless Sampson was shown who he can be like when he comes to sju which I think was a big selling point.  When it com es to bigs IMO, we need a kid to take the leap and show they believe in staff and then succeed.  When that happens we will be hearing a lot more bigs with sju as front runner, ala uk, fuse and gtown.  Obviously one big factor is if a kid is home grown and he wants to play in NYC.

Talk on the UCLA boards is that interest is dropping - concern that he's an "old" HS underclassman - already physically mature, limiting his upside.  They're using former Mater Dei player Schea Cotton as an example (Schea was arguably one of the 3 best HS sophs ever in Calfornia).  I think the "potential" thing is overrated, unless you're really concerned what a guy does in the NBA 5 years after he LEAVES your school.  Schea Cotton was scrod by the NCAA clearing house, so he had to play 1 year of JC ball, then played only 1 year of D-1 (at his third college choice, after the NCAA prevented him from playing at UCLA and then UNC-Charlotte, he ended up playing at Alabama for Mark Gottfried, who'd been his original recruiter as an Asst. at UCLA 4 years earlier!).   True, Schea DIDN'T improve much from HS soph to COllege Soph.   But that was STILL pretty good.  His one year of JC was 26.7 pts 8 rebounds, 53% 3pt shooting, followed by one year in the SEC at 15 pts and 7 rebs, before leaving for a Euro-Contract to support the family (older brother James had been cut after 2 years in the NBA)......

I'd settle for a guy who was "only" good enuf to put up 15/7 in the SEC!   :)

- SF Stanley Johnson (Oakland Soldiers)

Never been a fan of player rankings, but how one site has Johnson ranked 61st in the 2014 class is beyond confusing. Johnson’s got a mature build right now, and while the perimeter shot could use a little work he’s very good when it comes to finishing in traffic as well as with contact. He’s only going to get better as the perimeter shot comes along. Johnson finished their win over All-Iowa Attack with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

- Stanley Johnson has a long time before he has to make a decision of any kind as he’s a 2014 prospect, but he did mention June 15th as an important date in terms of an early list as it is the first time college coaches can officially phone and offer 2014 prospects. He’s already taken unofficial visits to UCLA and USC, and it’s possible that he’ll take an unofficial to Cal on Monday (Memorial Day). Johnson also stated that unofficials to Arizona and Oregon in August are possible
