This will be a quality opponent. The center is 6'10", 255 senior averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds, and considered one of the better traditional post up bigmen in the country. . There are two 6'11' guys behind him.The next two highest scorers are the guards, both in double digits, one of whom is shooting 545 from three and leads the team in attempts. He was 5 of 6 againt Creighton. The team overall shoots 392 from three. Rebound didderential for the season is over ten. Going into Creighton and leaving with a win is impressive. We will need our A game.

St. Mary's center is big and their offense runs through him. They throw it into him almost every possion . He is big , has some talent, but he is slow. He is a very good passer. Can't double and leave shooters open. This is a good team, not as good as the Deldova led team. Wining at Creightion is a good win. But they are a bottom 1/3 big east team this year.
GET UR ASS TO THE GAME!

I seen posters are telling people to get to carnesecca on friday.
I asked last week if using mass transit was a good idea, since I don't have a ride.
And it being in Jamaica.
I'm asking one more time. Good idea or no?

Trust me: there is no better idea than taking mass transit to Jamaica. If only for the atmosphere.

Depends where you are comig from. SJU is at Jamicia Estates and off of Union Turnpike which is safe. If you can take a buses there you will have no worries. I never took the train to SJU, but I know it is a bit of a walk from the train to SJU. Not an expert on the train though.

I'm in Woodside, if I go i'll probably take the 7 to flushing and take a bus from there.
Thanks.
I never been there, how much are the tickets?

Buy tickets on stubhub or vivid seats. Saw them as little as 3 bucks. I would get to Jamica station. Could take LIRR or E train. Then take a Gypsey cab to campus. Cab should cost about 10 bucks. U could probably take a city bus. Cab is well worth the money in my opinion. That is what I have done. Not the cheapest, but not a fan of city buses. If you take a cab, make sure it takes you to UNION and Utopia entrance.

Take the E to Queen Blvd/Union Turnpike, switch to the Q46 bus and it will take you right to campus. I guess coming from Woodside you could switch to the E at Roosevelt ave.

Nope, never felt like trooping it on the train then taking the bus.
Much easier just going to MSG, the subway is right at the corner.

Best way to go IMO. Just remember it's rush hour so expect a line for the Q46. You can take either the local or the Express Q46. Express makes less stops of course.

This is what I usually do when taking mass transit. The problem is arranging a cab home. Back to woodside from campus is probably $20. Uber

The three guys who get the most minutes are 6'2 6'1 5'11. This is not a team that will be able to kill us on the boards. Neutralize Waldow and we should be good.
I didnt realize that Aaron Bright transferred there from Stanford. He is the 5'11 guard (generous) and is the type of guard who has given our guys problems in the past. Very good shooter and able to get by his defender. He is my biggest concern.

Then I gotta go to the stubhub store to pick them up? Nah I'm to lazy for all that extra stuff.
Just going directly from here to SJU, I'll call their ticket office to make sure plenty is still available
I'll pay the $25 in the upper corner, even though stubhub could be less.

This isn't the stone age. You can print them out.

i'ts easy
1) stubhub.com
2) buy
3) print
4) show up
5) enjoy the game.

They have a senior laden lineup like us. Looking at the ticket resale sites makes me think it won't be well attended..

That's how I get to the games on weeknights, too. Last couple of years, the MTA has done a better job of just rolling out the buses, one right after another, to avoid the lines piling up. It used to be that 4 or 5 buses would not stop there, because they were too full, and you'd be waiting half an hour or so, until a new bus got rolled out to pick you up. Now, you rarely have to wait more then 10 minutes.

Kerry Carter is the guy that scares me more than Waldow. He is very similar to Harrison...really strong kid. Hopefully Harrison can lock him down. It'll be fun to watch those two go at it.

A familiar name. Teammate of that Parga or Pargo kid I think

Thinking I'm just going to stick with the msg games.
Getting tickets tomorrow for Villanova and Duke.
MSG games are good enough.

I'll be there Friday night. Can't wait. Hope we don't come out flat.

St Marys lost at home to Northern Arizona last night. This game might not be as close as we once thought.

They still be Creighton at home, unless Creighton at home. Maybe they still have had an off night.

Trap game between two Big East teams. I never like playing a team off a loss. They'll be dangerous, but we should win.

I agree somewhat that it could be a trap game. But no getting around the fact that a loss to N. Arizona is a bad bad loss. NAU is 4-6 with losses to UT San Antonio and North Carolina Central
-
A few of their posters on the St. Mary's board I was reading were saying before/early into the game vs. NAU that a bunch of their players got food poisoning after the creighton game. For what its worth.
-
We are favored by 8.5.
-

Interesting, that might explain the loss.
I'm looking forward to tonight, should be a good test for us against a team that can shoot and has some size.
-
Are we going to wakeup??
-
This is embarrassing. We can't run a simple offensive set. Everything is 1 on 1 moves or we have no offense
-
What a disgrace. So much for being ranked
-

Can't defend coach this time. Agree.
We missed a few easy ones and free throws.
Delarosa much better then everyone thought. He plays tough.
-
Well, it's midnight.
-
Brutal half of basketball. I honestly don't think it could have been worse.
-
33-18 18 freaking onts.
So far I'm glad I didn't go.
Lets see if they wake up for the final 20minutes
-
Just walked in...missed the 1st half... Thank goodness.
15 pt deficit? Lets see what this team is made out of.
-
Also, Jordan is so far away from being ready for the NBA its laughable
-
Also, Jordan is so far away from being ready for the NBA its laughable
When does actually "being ready" enter the decision making process? We all said the same thing about Sampson last year... I hope Adam Silver makes it a 20 year age limit at some point.
-
Great start to the half. Let's get this W.
-
I swear if Obekpa takes one more jump shot....
-
cut it to 8 back up to 12pnts sju gotta get a basket out of this timeout.
-
Can't afford to have too many empty trips once you screw yourself and get behind by 15...
St. john's not really the comeback type.
-
Lets get this to 7 by the under 12 TO
-
Let's Go!
-
Can someone pass the ball on the fast break.. Jesus Dom... Give it up and you will get it back.. Dumb basketball
-
Ok 6 at the under 12...
Lets get it to under 4 at the 8 min TO
-
Let's Go!
YEAH DLO
GREAT HUSTLE
-
Ferocious defense this half...
No Jordan is going to hurt.
-
Phil should never have taken that second three... Move the ball to Harrison
-
Keep the foot on the gas.
-
WTF WAS THIS IN THE 1ST HALF.
THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE
-
Impressive comeback... Wow. Outscored them by 19 in 12 minutes basically.
Can't get complacent now... Obekpa needs to be smart and stay on the court.. I'd bring Jordan back in at the 5 or 6 minute mark.
-
Now finish it
-
I would take CO out here.. at least for a couple of minutes.. Playing with fire.
-
Obekpa is too wound up.. He's going to get his 5th... Lavs is not doing the right thing here, IMO.
-
There is no reason for going the full shot clock with D'Angleo Harrison not touching the ball.
-
Obekpa got screwed this half. Awful
-
Get the rebound! Remember that play... If you grab the rebound , up 4 with the ball.. Instead, Obekpa fouls out and you're up only 1.. That is going to be the turning point... Watch
-
2:42 UP 2 GOTTA HOLD THIS
-
no second chance points
-
or third..or fourth... Geez
-
If STJ rebounds STM misses, they win... Pretty simple..
-
Convert on this possession and we just might be able to steal this one
-
Can breathe now
-
Escape! Great comeback win... very impressive.. Great job by the kids and staff grinding this out.
Joey will be serviceable I think. Big Boy.. Moved his feet well at the end vs Waldow
-
Convert on this possession and we just might be able to steal this one
No one stole this game. Dom got the guys the win, and I hope Sheed was learning what it takes.
-
Great comeback. As bad as it was watching them in the first half...it was so much fun watching that 2nd half!!
Dom is player of the game hands down with his defense on the Big Man in the 2nd half / made all the hustle plays and even hit a J!!
-
Obekpa got screwed this half. Awful
I missed that foul completely, didn't seem like a push off. But who cares now. Great D in the second half.
Dom and Dlo!
-
Good win. Showed a lot of heart. Exactly the kind of game this team needed.
-
What a comeback! This team showed me something tonight in the second half. We are heading for good things this year
-
No way these guys win this game last year or the year before.. Veteran leadership is so huge..
I've never seen JDLR before.. The way folks made him out on here I thought the fat dude from Teen Wolf was gonna appear.. He is a big boy, but loos in decent enough shape.. I think he can help this season...
-
We win with Jordan and Green shooting 3 for 20 and getting out rebounded 45 to 30. Won the turnover game, not sure how they did it, but who cares.
Winning ugly, still a beautiful thing.
-
Jordan a spectator tonight. If the staff roughs him up some, can he take it. Maybe he excelled on D and I missed it. Hope so.
-
Great effort in the 2nd half, out scoring them 35-14.
Please dont do this against LB St.
Around the top25 E Kentucky 72 #18 Miami 44, don't forget #19 SD St. all lost at cincy.
-
Jordan needs to stop with the jumpers. He hasn't earned the right to shoot them...he's the only guy out there playing like it is still 2013-2014. He's moving on nearly every attempt. Guys have to realize how low a % shot that is. Only elite shooters can get away with shooting off the bounce consistently. The kid just killed us tonight...no shot at chemistry with him taking those jumpers. He also made a # of bad decisions with the ball. We won in spite of Jordan tonight (2-12 fgs 1-5 from three, 1-4 from the line, 4 fouls, 2 turnovers, only 1 board and 1 assist).
Gutty win. The offense wasn't there...they were out-sized...this was an awful match up, but they got it done with stifling defense in the second half. Dom was sensational.
If you told me that Harrison and Jordan would only combine for two boards and JDR would have played double-digit minutes, I would have thought we lost by ten.
Lavin out-coached another one tonight. What a poor decision by the St. Mary's coach not throw us a zone defense in the second half during the 10-0 run. Has he watched any tape?
-
No way these guys win this game last year or the year before.. Veteran leadership is so huge.. I've never seen JDLR before.. The way folks made him out on here I thought the fat dude from Teen Wolf was gonna appear.. He is a big boy, but loos in decent enough shape.. I think he can help this season...
I think he'll give us more than almost anyone expected--which is an extremely low bar to get over. All we can ask is for him not to lose the game or put us in a worse situation than when he came in. He looked lost as you would expect for his first game on a new team, but he did hustle and play hard and didn't lose it for us. He's a big, big boy but he doesn't have half the skill of his brother.
Dom is playing out of his mind right now--he was nearly flawless tonight. And he is such a good complement to a mountain like JDR who will box out but won't get off the floor.
-
Also, let me say good job by Lavin for whatever he said at halftime ;)
-
All credit goes to Lavin for this win. Putting Dom on Waldo to allow Obekpa to provide the weak side help made all the difference and won us the game. Best coaching move in his tenure. Good job by him
-
With JDLR able to spell Obekpa, even in the first half I thought there was a chance St. Mary's would wind up with tired legs and that we had a chance. With no JDLR I think Waldow would have been too much to handle.
-

He's finally got the team that he envisioned when he put it together...four versatile guys that can switch and defend multiple positions. Dom at the four gives us the most versatile defender in the country. I'm so glad he's done guarding small guards. What a game he turned in...Harrison too. Wow.
-
Also, let me say good job by Lavin for whatever he said at halftime ;)
I agree. I'll happily eat my words. Lavin adjusted at the half. Waldo couldn't get comfortable. St.Mary couldn't put the ball on the floor and penetrate at all, and that seemed to take them almost completely out of the game.
Great job by the seniors stepping up on defense. Especially Dom guarding Waldo, rebounding and passing well. (Except on the break. Yikes)
-
Just got back from the game. First half sucked as you all know.
Totally different team in the second half. Should have been an over the back call prior to CO's 5th foul.
Need to make those free throws to prevent long scoring droughts. Even Dlo missed a few.
Win and move on!
-
A performance like the one we got from JDR tonight might prove that the coaches that spend every single day with these kids might know the team just a little better than the geniuses that bash these kids on this message board...
-

I know I shouldn't look back but if we had JDLR against Gonzaga we win. Obekpa got in early foul trouble that game and we had no one to bang with the big guys.
As long as JDLR gives us a few good minutes a game we should be good.
-
just back and have no nails left. wanted to thank Sir and Dangelo for the early Christmas. Anyone know when we recovered from a 15 point halftime deficit? Wonderful mature team to stand up to and overcome adversity.
-
Did not see any of the game but from What I read here it seems Lavin did a great job adjusting to St Marys at half at home

Dom is playing out of his mind right now--he was nearly flawless tonight. And he is such a good complement to a mountain like JDR who will box out but won't get off the floor.
JDR was lost out there :2funny:
He was by the most vocal on the defensive end.
-
Baldi -- Terrible first half -- Waldow killed us -- down like 15 at half. Harrison and better defense got us back into the game in the second half and credit goes to Lavin's adjustments. Dom played great all around and made some big plays late. Sheed and Greene had a terrible game offensively.
-
Lavin deserves credit for calling that timeout late in the 2nd and drew up a nice backdoor Sheed layup
-
I missed the whole 1st half. My observations on Joey are solely based on when he replace CO after he fouled out. He moved his feet well on a drive by Waldow late in the game , turned out to be a huge stop.
5-10 minutes, 5 fouls as a space eater... He's done his job.
-
No way these guys win this game last year or the year before.. Veteran leadership is so huge.. I've never seen JDLR before.. The way folks made him out on here I thought the fat dude from Teen Wolf was gonna appear.. He is a big boy, but loos in decent enough shape.. I think he can help this season...

That was sexy. I was begging for the timeout on my couch then I'm was waiting to see what was drawn up. Awesome.
-
Phil should never have taken that second three... Move the ball to Harrison
Didn't mind that shot. In rhythm, rebounders in position, but poor execution. Phil faded like Mason Jr. when there was no need for it.
-
Moving into conference play this team will have confidence they can make a big comeback. Something they haven't done a lot of over the years.

Thought Lavin playing traditional lineup in first half hurt a lot. While Joey Delarosa gave everything he had tonight and for most part had serviceable minutes he's still below par. I give him a lot of credit though because he gave everything he got but he is simply limited. While Waldo is very skilled SJU was lucky he wasn't a better athlete.
2nd half went small and played some zone too. This helped but what really made the difference was gutsy call to have Dom defend Waldo. Made a huge difference. Even though Obekpa fouled out I credit Lav for leaving him in. Scared money, don't make money. He made some big plays in 2nd half and had to play your best guys to win.
-
I think Delarosa showed he can at least come in and spell Obekpa if we need him.

Just got home & agree Dave, Dom's D in second half on the big guy saved the day. Great effort & good strategy.

1. Great to comeback and win.
2. Great to win despite shooting very poorly.
3. Great to win despite getting dominated on the boards
4. Forced a lot of turnover and manufactured that into offense in 2nd half.
-
I swore I saw the ghost of Norm at the end...I've been watching too many replays of "A Christmas Carol". This is the way looie used to do it back in the day. Gutsy win.

Tonight was possibly Lavin's most impressive half time adjustment, but I don't think he had options in the first half once Obekpa picked up his 2nd foul. He filled the space of a center a center.
But, in the second half, putting Dom on Waldow changed the game for good.
Problem is we can't be a team that plays 6 guys. Delarosa, Stewart and somebody else has to get there more. We are too think to play against teams w big men and only go out there w one big guy who sees action.

remember this is captain "glass half empty" , im enjoying the holidays if we take care of business monday. Nice crowd tonight also, seemed very vocal.

It is great to get a win like that on a night where you shot so poorly. Our defense was phenomenal throughout the whole game really. Even in the first half I though the effort was great on d. Offense was another story, I dont think well ever be consistently good on offense but I know we will be better than that.
St. John's Red Storm - your #15-19 team in the nation

Boo you commented on JDR but said you only saw second half. IMO he did an even better job in a longer stretch in the first half. He was an excellent example of a big helping the team by just throwing his weight around and taking up space. By banging into guys and just taking up space he allows our other players to grab the ball or make a play. Big dude and can actually contribute.

Man had such a crazy fun time in the second half. Love going to Carnesseca Arena. Not a lot of students stayed for Winter Break so make sure to come out Monday night for another big game!

agree with everything except the zone. It was/is awful. Having another body will hopefulley retire any possible zones. I am not one to call Dunlap the savior, but since he left any zone = easy baskets.

Towards the end of the game when JDR was in, there was some nice defense being played by the team. Good switching and a lot of chatter going on. Good to see. I must of jumped out of my seat four or five times! Awesome come back

Disagree, I think the zone has looked good thus far.

To survive a game in which Mean Joe and Savior shoot a combined 3 for 20? Wow!
- Not the "Greatest Show on Turnpike" we've come to know and love as the Johnnies did NOT have one single dunk the entire game. Don't think that's ever happened before with this group. Virtually no run outs/fast break points. The only two I can recall ended with Dom bobbling the ball out of bounds and D'lo eschewing the layup and hitting a huge three. When he does that announcers and bandwagon fans are cringing but vets know that's just how we roll. St. Mary's is a strong and disciplined defensive team.
- 3'lo missed, for him, a months worth of free throws in a night (3). Carried entire scoring load; was scoring options 1, 2 and 3 for most of the night and was up to the task.
- Jordan shot 25% from the line. Ugghh.
- Give credit to the skinny Delarosa who with no thawing whatsoever was thrown right into the fire and didn't incinerate. Interesting that he's immediately ahead of Mr. Jones and Da Ali B. I don't know how he didn't get a flagrant for making that kid need stitches.
- Triangle had a disastrous John Starks like shooting night but as we've come to expect still came up huge in crunch time pulling in a rebound amongst the trees after CO had fouled out with 11 seconds remaining and calmly nailing both ends of the game sealing one and one.
- Our defense in the second half was Phenomenal with Sir with much love leading the charge. We worked hard! His shutting down double zero from the front side keyed the win. He really was "Costco" and we needed the 5 gallon mayonnaise and 50 roles of toilet paper. He's going to win P of G.
- The typically sleepy Alumni hall crowd was large and in charge. Their volume and energy no doubt helped key the second half charge. The players needed it, felt it and mentioned it in the presser.
- Traffic!, Traffic! and more Traffic! Driving around the metro region during the holiday season is like an enhanced interrogation technique. I finally got to my seat with 9:18 remaining in the 1st half.
P.S. Butler game is going to be a sold-out snake pit. Even more so if we manage to win the next few. I'm looking forward to it.

Does anyone know if it's possible to watch replays of games on Foxsports-go, like you can on Watchespn ?
So far I've been unable to watch games that have already been played.

In case you weren't aware, FOAD, Fun, Dr. Fun took over BEB from the maroons who were originally running it and going to close it down. So yes, he wrote it. PS, hadn't been to the site since the relaunch. Interesting look, puts it right out there that you really don't GAF what anyone else has to say. Also, listening to some Weasels this week (ipod on shuffle songs) and they're growing on me now that I'm used to your voice and the vaguely TMBG nasalness.

The guy who owned the site was actually quite a nice guy. He transferred the files and domain name and set the whole thing up for nothing. I would have left the forums as they were but the dB was ginormous and clunky and I couldn't be arsed to update it.

Lavin deserves credit for calling that timeout late in the 2nd and drew up a nice backdoor Sheed layup
He's called that a few times out of t.o.'s and it's always worked. The plays out of t.o.'s this year are much better overall.

Of what, the backdoor? I've seen it twice before. I know I saw it in the second half against Syracuse and another time out of a time out, but I can't remember the game.

I've asked Fox several times the same question, but they are not ESPN. They are f'n garbage. They haven't bothered to pay attention to digital. As if we needed another reason to hate them.
The only thing they do that I like is they televise all of our games. I just would prefer it to any other network. For example, ANY other network.
Only thing we can do is DVR the games. There is no online tool. Our contract with Fox runs another 8 years after this season. It's really a shame.

No, but they do usually replay the games. Typically at times like 1am, 3am, 10am or 1pm.

St Mary's against San Fran on ESPNU
Waldow amazes me. He throws up some awkward prayer shots and they go in. Already saw two tonight and he did 3 against us. But props to him as he makes it work
Oh and he is still whining each time down the court. He missed his calling as a Duke player

Is Waldow a NBA prospect?

Not unless he gets invited to play for the Sixers.
