Title: Long Beach St.
Post by: hnk on December 20, 2014, 09:49:35 AM
I think they have to play Texas tonight and then travel and play us Monday night.

they are on 2 game losing streak. likely lose tonight at TX (making it 3).  they'll come out hungry Monday night.  we can't afford another slow start.

They also hit about 40% of their threes...that's caused problems for us.

0-5 on the road. They are on almost a 2 week road trip collecting checks. They are a decent team. We are going to be rested. We have that as advantage. Have to win.

I'll admit I haven't seen them play yet but I don't think their 5-7 record tells the whole story here. Has anyone looked at their schedule so far? It is brutal and they've played some really good teams pretty tough. look at this lineup! plus they shoot 20 threes a game at hit at a 39% clip...i wouldn't overlook these guys

at BYU (scored 90 points in a 5 point loss)
at Xavier (got crushed)
Kansas State (won by 9)
at UCLA (lost by 14)
Washington (lost in double OT)
Xavier again somehow (won by 3)
at San Diego State (lost by 1)
at Texas (lost by 10)

They had the lead in the second half against a very good Texas team.  This will be a tough game.

Currently Long Beach St is at #4 in terms of strength of schedule.  This is going to be a tough game.

I do like the fact that they just played yesterday @ Texas.  Hopefully they come in tired!

Our defense on 3-point shooting has been absolutely tremendous this year. Opponents are shooting just 25.9% against us from 3.

that's been a huge reason for our success imo.   And i think it comes from playing the smaller lineup.    Instead of Sanchez/Sampson closing out on a shooter... it's Dom or Rysheed.

LBSU consistently plays one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. They won't be intimidated in the least. Need to crush their spirits early

Obviously not good news by any stretch but still think we win this one. Myles will have to play some solid minutes tonight, would like to see him with Felix mixed in a bit as well.

Brutal timing with Sheed.

Has 2nd semester already begun? as in JDR playing already, does that mean Sheed is no longer able to transfer 2nd semester?

Would be a good time to get some more experience playing with 2 fouls in the 1st half though. We won't be able to afford having him siton the bench for 15 minutes in the half against some of the better BE teams

Not to be mean but Balamou serves no purpose. You can pull a guy off the street to do what he did. Stand around the perimeter he serves no threat. You can't have Pointer, Branch and Balamou play together when they all can't shoot. Have to play Stewart. He isn't any good but at least he is a threat.

The announcers just said Lavin told them Rysheed is out indefinitely with a stomach bug.
Indefinitely ?

Consider me skeptical.  I know I know, it's ridiculous to question the goings-on of this team.  But this smells

No basketball player I know skips a game just because he was blowing chunks.

Wish Branch would take an open jumper now and then.  I'm all for guys recognizing their limitations - a la Dom not hoisting up deep J's -- but Branch cannot be that bad of a shooter where other teams leave him wide open.  Especially with Jordan out tonight.

Great win with no  Jordan and Dlo stifled by good matchup and doubles....Great D.....Co a great game but he is no NBA player yet, no even close, jumper is awful and can only be made or even attempted when wide open.  Great D, a poor mans Bill Russell the way he holds his position, doesn't leave his feet early and times the blocks.  Dlo impressive by not forcing it.  Nice game by Greene and Branch (who wisely passed up his jumper when available, it is awful).  Pointer solid as usual.  Team quickness and D outstanding.  Team did what I would have predicted they would do with Jordan there and a good game by Harrison, a 15+ win.  D wore them down.  Could be an excellent season if they keep it up.  Will know by Mid January.

He shot it off the side of the backboard in the second half. I've been saying for years, I think when he gets into the lane good things happen. With the exception of the first play of the game, where he threw it right to a LBS guard, he played very well. He's not comfortable shooting a 3, but he could take a 10 footer or drop a floater. Dom isn't comfortable shooting a 3 either, and when he finally sucked it up and took one you could see why. Still, he's learned to get comfortable with that step back 10 footer. Branch needs to find one way to score with a jumper of some kind. He does that, he'll be ready for the BE.

when I walked into CA and heard Sheed had tummy problems, I almost lost my cookies.  What defense we played; very good team help and talking on the floor unlike last year when there seemed to be little communication.  Holding a team to under 50 for 2 consecutive nights--wow!  End of game team was really beaming; Dangelo looks like he is putting personal success behind team success-he wants to win first and foremost.  truly a TEAM victory

Branch is a decent shooter within fifteen feet off the dribble. He is not a catch and shoot guy at all. He is very good at going to his left but that is literally all he does. Cant remember the last time I saw him go down the right side of the floor for a bucket. All in all he makes us better, there was that 5 or so minute stretch in the first where lavin went without him and the offense got stagnant, yes Dlo was out but Phil just cant play the point.

If this game was boring I hope they continue to bore the living $h#t out of me for the rest of the season! Rotating D has been outstanding last 2 games. Tonite we be a fairly talented team that is battle tested this season by 17 without maybe our second best player. I'll more than take it, I am very happy with it.

Surprised at lack of discussion about the game. Everyone shopping?

Good win for the boys. Gutted it out and got stops when they needed it. It was very helpful that LB State looked gassed from the tip. I know it's unpopular to say anything negative about Greene since he's playing better as of late but it really makes me furious when he takes long two's. He has to lead the country in toes on the line.

Obekpa was a man on both ends tonight. He really put the team on his back tonight.

Defiantly nice to see the crowd give the team standing ovation before the game when the announcer said the 17th ranked in the nation. Hopefully this can translate well to MSG, and even maybe hearing positives on the tecruting trail.

Look at the Fordham, SMC and tonight, there's a trend going on here.
We're a second half team. Which is all good, but if we ever find iot in the 1st half, it's over at halftime.

The differce is that in 2nd half Lavin sticks with the lineup. Only subbing branch. In first half he tries to keep guys out of foul trouble so you'll see jones, Stewart, and now jdl. Tonight he only subbed in 2nd half with 2 minutes to go. (Mostly due to none of our guys being in any fouls trouble.)

Lavin did well in the second half again. Credit where it's due.

Props to the one student behind the basket near the SJU bench who was making comments that made Jim Burr react on a couple of occasions.

Defense was the key. Critical during an awkward offensive game. The Team gutted out an important win and confidence builder. Positive Team chemistry is visibly present.
Wouldn't want to see this type of setting against a higher quality Team though. .Kudos to the Team and Coaches for the Win. ::)

Foolish to not include Dom's 7 assists, no? Doing so was pretty pedestrian.

Jim Burr should not be allowed in the gym! He loves to call offensive fouls on SJU and wipe out baskets. Call on Dlo was horrible. Wish this guy would retire already!
