October, 2009: Ron Roberts could be one of the best unsigned 2010 bigs in the East. The long 6'6 Roberts plays with a great deal of energy and aggressive play makes him a terrific rebounder. Although he is very effective around the basket; finishing plays and scoring put backs, Roberts demonstrated...

At least he's more of a post-playing tweener than a perimeter tweener. Interesting pickup... can he score?
Also, he's a teammate of 4-star recruit Myles Davis: Myles Davis Bio (http://johnnyjungle.com/recruiting/2011-class/myles-davis/) And AAU teammate of Myles Mack...

Indiana was apparently on him.
""We sat down just last week to talk about what is so exciting about Indiana because now he has offers from just about everybody in the Big East," said Kelly. "Has offers from the Atlantic 10, the Big Ten and Maryland. He is just infatuated with the history of Indiana and that kind of shocked me because I didn't know what he knew of Indiana. He is really, really excited that they are recruiting him hard."
When Peegs.com got the chance to see Roberts in Las Vegas last month, the New Jersey native was impressive as a shot blocker and rebounder inside and showed solid perimeter skills as well.
"I think he is being recruited as an athletic four that can score inside and outside," said Kelly. "That gives coaches more of an opportunity to utilize his abilities in the paint. His strength -- we are pretty heavy into our strength and conditioning and he is becoming one of our strongest guys."
He talked about his developing perimeter game.
"365 days ago he shot line drives at the front of the rim," said Kelly. "He didn't really know how to hold the ball. It is all work in progress but his perimeter game has really stepped up. Having the god given tools and the athletic ability and couple that with being our hardest working guy--the sky is the limit for him.""

Sounds interesting.
Welcome to Queens Ron!
-
Welcome to Queens, but it really doesn't sound like he had any other OFFERS from bigtime schools, just interest.
And unless I'm mistaken, this was SJU's only scholarship for 2010 to give away.
-
I'm sure they can make room for someone.
Unless Mase gets a 6th year.

LOL they always do "make room"
-
Just to put another spin on this:
He's been labeled as a project with a ton of upside. He's going to need to piece it together by the time his sophomore season rolls around because this team will REALLY need him in the 2011-2012 season.
-

There is the quote from Peter's post
"We sat down just last week to talk about what is so exciting about Indiana because now he has offers from just about everybody in the Big East"
And Rivals shows Rutgers and Temple offering.
-
Scout shows Penn State offering, with a lot of big time schools interested....Maryland, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Villanova.

very, VERY good. Both Myles' (Mack and Davis) are high major game changers.

sorry while im writing this im watching lance play and i have to say that this shit hurts. i was never a st.johnsfan until my guys came here. but i will always root for ny. i think he should have been here. i think he could have been here. any way i like both of them alot. mack a lttle more even though he is like 5'9 but they can freaking score. and can play the point mack alittle better.
-
We've been on Myles and Myles for... miles? So I hope this is a prelude. Here's hoping they're close to their boy Ron-Rob.

Funny you should reference that article, I actually watched him out in LV with Peegs and my cousin. He's an athletic, but short four, as the article said. I don't think any of the conference's elite will lose sleep over Roberts getting Roberts. Kyle Anderson was the most intriguing prospect in the program, but he's got to work on his jumper. Lil' Myles Mack will be a fun four year player too.
-
Welcome Ron! Keep working hard.
-
Welcome aboard...look forward to seeing him play for the Johnnies!

So do we like this signing??? More than other years...where does this rank in terms of the players we got who came in this year?
Other schools in the Big East continue to land 4 and 5 star prospects and St. John's is still focused on landing under the radar recruits. Do we even have to look much further into why this program is as irrelevant as it is? I'm sorry ... I know it's not the popular thing to say. But this just continues the perpetual cycle that has been going on at St. John's for 6 years now. When you don't land big time talent, it's hard to be a big time team.

I've never been to hung up on recruiting stars. I'll definitely make it out to a couple of St. Peter's Prep games this season and take some video.
We should be involved with and signing Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris, Jayvaughn Pinkston's. I agree we should be but right now we aren't(You want to point the finger here thats fine and acceptable gripe). Then if we play the waiting game and they go elsewhere where are we then?
I understand with 1 scholarship available you'd think this is the year we swing for the fences. I think we had to sign someone in the early period and couldn't afford to let it linger to the spring when hopefully we're getting 2011 commitments.
I like that we dipped into Seton Hall/Rutgers backyard for this recruit. I also like that we established some type of connection to the NJ Playaz who has a wealth of talent in 2011.

I have to agree with you.
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but we really did need a BIGTIME talent with this 1 scholarship, and I don't think Ronald Roberts is that guy. I've spoken to a few people who have all said he has huge upside but is a project.
Because of all our current Juniors graduating in 2011, we're gonna need Roberts to be close to a finished product by a sophomore year.
Now is it possible we land Pinkston or another prospect and "make room" for them? Based on the fact that there have been transfers every year under Norm, I would say it's certainly possible.
But who would you "push out the door"? Would it be Rob Thomas? That might be the most logical choice basketball wise, but based on what he's been able to overcome off the court, it would be a REAL tragedy to push him out. Would it be Dele Coker? Would it be Quincy Roberts? Again, this is all hypothetical and probably VERY preliminary.
This is where Norm's mismanagement of scholarships will really hurt us. We now have no room to work with and SJU needs guys that can be difference makers in the Big East as freshmen and sophomores.

Dave, I completely understand where you're coming from. But in the same respect, Norm has been here for 5 years and still can't sign a difference maker for this program. The bottom line is St. John's has been relegated to competing with mid-majors for recruits and has been for years. And while you say that they are creating a type of connection the NJ Playaz, what in Norm's past would lead you to believe Norm can sign any prime time player from them?
I'm sorry, but it needs to be asked ... why is Norm still employed? Outside of Fred Hill, he is probably the poorest in game coach in the conference. And to boot, he still can't out recruit any coach in the Big East.

The administration wants no part of scandal, I think that trumps everything else in their eyes.

I hae no problem with this signing. Marillac actually became a St. John's fan while living in New Brunswick, NJ. Good to see a New Brunswick kid come aboard.
I think these 6'7 bouncy kids are the types that blow up more than any other.

Justin Burrell to Omari Lawrence and Dwight Hardy.
Ron Roberts to ???
Thats my line of thinking.
-

How good is his HS/AAU teammate Myles?
I remember paying close attention to Myles Mack at the NIKE Peach Jam over the summer.... He has pretty good quickness; distributes the ball fairly well and can stroke it from deep.
-
Sounds like the kind of guy who will work hard to improve...with an instinct for rebounds. Welcome Ron!
Those 2000 teams w/Artest, Postell, Bootsy...everyone was 6-4 to 6-7 and had hops. Fun teams to watch.

St. John's coach Norm Roberts likes athletic players who can play multiple positions. His team is loaded with them. And now he's bringing another on board.
The Red Storm got a signed national letter of intent Thursday from Ron Roberts, a 6-7 senior from Bayonne, N.J., now enrolled at Jersey City St. Peter's Prep. He chose the Johnnies over Saint Joseph's, the other school that's been heavily involved with him long term. In recent months a handful of elite programs have tried to make inroads with him, most notably Indiana.
Ron Roberts is a late bloomer who has played only one full season at St. Peter's Prep and averaged 17.4 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. He primarily played in the low post. In the off-season with the N.J. Playaz club team he usually plays on the wing and faces the basket.
"This kid has played 26 varsity basketball games in his life. He didn't play a minute of varsity basketball at Bayonne (High) before he transferred," St. Peter's Prep coach Mike Kelly said. "It's a meteoric rise in terms of his ability. In 14 months it's a complete transformation. It's because he works his butt off every day.
"If the trend of maturing continues, he has a shot to be a pro. He's already got the sizzle. He just needs the steak and potatoes. It's a coup for St. John's."
"Ronald will be a great addition to our program," Norm Roberts said. "He is an outstanding young man who will give us versatility at the power forward and small forward positions. Ron has a great upside."
Kelly thought Ron Roberts was a lock to go to Saint Joseph's, which has sent three players to the NBA over the past eight seasons. He was stunned at how the player reacted to Norm Roberts.
"I didn't think it could happen, but he blew the kid away," Kelly said. "He fell in love with the idea of playing in the Big East. He was signed, sealed and delivered as soon as he went there."
St. John's (2-0), which meets Brown (1-2) Friday at 7 at Carnesecca Arena in a first-round game of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, has only one scholarship senior in Anthony Mason Jr. and this could be its only recruit of the year. In recent seasons, some players have opted to transfer in the spring so the Johnnies' staff will continue to recruit.
Kelly said that Ron Roberts has increased his weight training to prepare himself for the physical play in the Big East. "He wants to play minutes next season," he said.
Ron Roberts has not yet completed the NCAA-mandated requirements for freshman participation. Kelly said his grade-point average has him in good academic standing at the school, but that he won't take the college boards for the first time until next month.

Don't most kids take 1st SAT's in spring of Jr year ? If he doesn't
qualify & goes to prep, does that release both him & school from LOI ?
Since next year he would see almost no time at the 3/4,
It would work great actually if he went prep, became our
1st '11, and we picked up a 1 or true 4/5 this spring.
-
he looks like he needs to put on some weight to play power forward where we will need him after our entire front court graduates. we look pretty #$%^ed after our juniors are gone.

We're not a good team now, so how much worse can it get? After watching the first 3 games of the year, I am having doubts whether this team will get over the 15 or 16 win mark. Siena, Temple, Duke, and Georgia will all most likely take care of business against us and Norm will be giving us his typical spin, "Well, this is what happens when you schedule tough, tough teams on your non-conference schedule. But it was an important learning experience for all of these guys and I feel we'll be better off for it come time for Big East play."

Roberts had 19 points and 17 rebounds last night in a loss to patterson Catholic, a close game until the fourth quarter. Roberts can play and has tremendous upside!

"I am predicting even without all the super ratings, this kid will see NBA minutes one day."
-
I know this is petty but St Peter's Prep is in Jersey City not New Brunswick as the title states.
-
You are correct, sir. Made the change in the first post.
-
I caught High School Weekly on MSG last night, and Mike Quick had highlights of the PC/St Peters game. There were four plays from Roberts. One was a monster put back dunk off a missed 3 pointer, another was a off board and stickback dunk, another dunk and the last one he beat his man off the dribble baseline and made a fingerroll layup.
Tough to judge from that but he looked VERY athletic and has a good frame
-
The St. Peter's Prep vs. St. Anthony's game will be airing on MSG Sunday, Jan. 17 at 9:00 a.m.
-
A previous High School Weekly is online. Tom Konchalski talks St. Peter's Prep at the 5 minute mark of part 2 and there is 2 quick clips of Roberts.

They put the episode online. Video is a little choppy though. Game highlights start about the 1:10 mark of part 1.

Yea the dunks were impressive I like how he hits the offensive glass hard. He was also doing that against some pretty good competition too.

Nice game vs top competition. Kid can play.

St. Peters might win that game. St. Anthony has not been at full strength all year.

Roberts a very steady player, 20 and 11 rebounds in limited time.

16 points/10 rebounds for Roberts in blowout. Myles Davis had 13 points in his return from a concussion. Big measuring stick game coming up with St. Anthony. It will be interesting to see Collier vs. Roberts.

One of the comments was:
"Interesting timing for this article after the abrupt transfer of one of his top players...no mention of that. Damage control?"
Anyone know who the player is?

Ronald Roberts had 17 points in an overtime loss to St. Anthony the game is currently airing on MSG right now.

anybody watch any of the game?
-
I DVR'd it but haven't gotten around to it yet.
-
i noticed the announcers say he's grown to 6'9".
-
Did he look that big to you? It's huge for us if he is really that tall. I'd play him at center and just run on people all day. Hopefully Norm's replacement would do the same thing.
-
This kid a 3 or 4?
From the brief highlights and from what I've read, he looks like a faceup-four. He actually might be a kid that can bounce it 2-3 times and flush ala Hakim Warrick at Syracuse. Hopefully he embraces the position like Warrick and doesn't try to force himself to be a three.
-
Well at least we know he likes to throw it down....

He is #24 normally but in the video it looks like he is #5...not sure though.

he wore #5 against st anthony's. he looked kind of light to dominate at the four...but he may still be growing and won't be putting on muscle for a while.
-
Looks like he will fit in at St John's. He missed free throws at the end of the game

A lot of those guys are skinny. I saw Michael Gilchrist over the weekend and he's a twig yet he's the #1 player in the country. I'd look more at his shoulders to see if his frame could add more weight. Did you go to the game?
-
no, i watched on television.
a kid who is presumably 6'9" and growing is probably going to put on weight...especially at a program like st john's where everyone looks pretty cut.
yes, he missed key free throws that could have put the game out of reach. they were up by ten with a couple of minutes to play...
poor coaching. there's no shot clock in new jersey...but st peters insisted on running.
-
Just watched it. There's no way he's 6'9". I think the announcer just made a mistake. He's 6'6" at best.
-
There go my dreams of an athletic monster patrolling the middle.
Back to praying Ryan Rhoomes comes aboard and dominates in prep school.

I thought Rhoomes was 6'9". Please tell me he's at least 6'8" and growing...
I figured Rhoomes wasn't as good, hence the hope that the prep year would work wonders for him.

Another nice game by Ron and Myles Davis. Appears opposition was poor. Note Myles had 11 assists. Is that a need of ours? (:

rhoomes is 6'8 roberts is like 6'6 maybe 6'7

Ronald Roberts, 6’7 2010 210lb PF, is a St John’s signee. Roberts has great length, is athletic, smooth and very light on his feet. He has a nice touch and can stretch the defense with his shot. St John’s got a nice prospect that could develop into a very solid player in the Big East.
-
25 points/12 rebounds for Roberts. Myles Davis did not play.

See latest on Ron Roberts, 23 points and 18 rebounds. Not the best compettition, but note his 11 free throws, goes to the rack and makes them. I think we have ousrselves a diamond in the rough. Hopefully someone can develop him, a big if!

We'll have more on this game sometime today or tomorrow. Ron Roberts is real deal.
-
Dave,
Any sense we are still in the game for Myles Davis?
-
I was there and will have a writeup later today or tomorrow. Let's just say this was in my top 5 HS basketball games I've ever been to. Doron Lamb had an unrivaled individual performance and Ron Roberts might be the best recruit Norm has gotten thus far.
-
I have been told that Ron Roberts will DEFINITELY re-open his recuiting if Norm Roberts is not back as coach next season.
-
Didn't he sign an LOI, though? They don't have to let him out. (Though it's bad practice not to).
-
That is always a possibility, but the right new coach's background and track record can trump that. You can't be held hostage. IF Norm is not the right guy, my opinion is take the risk.
-

I like that the kid is being loyal to Norm.

let him walk. we can't take another six years of being insignificant.

the school would probably let him out.
however, if we do fire norm, i would HOPE that ron roberts would at least wait to see and meet the new coach before making his decision to leave. ya never know, he may like him.
wouldnt blame him for jetting, though.

Roberts goes for 30 and Davis 29 inlatest effort. Note blazing 3 point shooting over recent games by Davis.

18 and 9 in latest game in limited action. His team is playing well. My coaching friend continues to feel Ron is potentailly a pro with the right coaching and development. A big "If" with our current staff.

If there is a coaching change at St. John's, the first call the guy makes should be to this kid.
He has the potential to be the best recruit St. John's has had in a very long time. If he hadn't signed early he would be getting chased down by much higher level programs.

He doesn't appear to be considered a top prospect. The only hope we have is a sleeper. Do you know if those rankings change at some point before next season?

In the video, Poison. He said that he's going to be a very good Big East player and St. John's did very well locking him up early as only A-10 schools were involved. He played JV basketball at Bayonne and now he's Varsity for St. Peter's prep so he's a quick learner.

That is stunning. He was playing JV!

Ron Roberts is likely the best recruit Norm has signed in his tenure. Only comparable one is Justin Burrell, and if Justin was under the right coach, he would be better. Let's hope Roberts continues to develop.
-
Less than a fortnight ago, Ron Roberts, who is the sole Saint John’s commitment for the class of 2010, enjoyed the best performance of his young career in an 84-81 win against national power Oak Hill at the Prime Time Shootout. The St. Peter’s Prep forward scored twenty-two points, including a crucial free throw with seconds remaining to force the Warriors of Oak Hill into shooting a three-pointer at the buzzer. After the big game, Roberts spoke with Johnny Jungle about the win, his decision to come to St. John’s and what talents he can bring to the program.

Ron, you should still come here, and be proud of your choice.
The administration here might not be very smart, but if they do finally realize that a change must be made, rest assured the next guy couldn't possibly be worse.
-
I hope Ron decides to stay even when Norm is fired because he seems like a really good recruit and he will be needed badly after everyone leaves next year. He will be better off with a new coaching staff, I hope he realizes this.
-
Stop being so pessimistic guys. He's signed to a LOI its binding agreement to come to school here. He's excited to come here.
-
Who's being pessimistic?
Getting a new coach is a reason for optimism.

I'm going to have to look into this 4 times business. I don't recall ever losing to Freehold. From today's NY Times....

A slower pace came with news of a retirement. When C.B.A.’s Ed Wicelinski, who had coached Billet, stepped away in the summer of 2007 after 27 years and 625 victories, Billet jumped.
“C.B.A. is no regular job,†Gonzalez said. “They’re the Hoosiers of the Shore.â€

Believe what you will. Kids come based upon reputation and academics. All the kids that come to the school are fairly local nor do we offer boarding.

He has and did well against teams like Patterson Catholic and Oak Hill.

Ugh, need to make a decision quickly and get this kid on board before the bigs stomp and steal
-
Can schools continue to call a kid who has verballed?
-
He has signed if I'm not mistaken.
-
Then contact should have definitely stopped.
-
Schools are prohibited from contacting a player after a verbal or LOI. Technically St. John's doesn't have to grant him a release if Norm is let go.
-
They can't contact him, but I'm sure indicators of interest have been put out to people around him - e.g., his AAU coach, his high school coach, etc.
-
And they shouldn't grant him a release.
Thems the brakes. You still get to go to college for free,
and the good news is now you'll be coached by someone better than Roberts because there is no one worse.
-

-
Sources close to the St. Peter’s program said several Big East and ACC schools continued to call with inquiries about Roberts even though he has signed with St. John’s.
Roberts would have to be let out of his Letter of Intent to transfer. If there is a coaching change, the administration could opt to let him leave.

When it comes to Norm moving on, there isn't a senior in the country whose LOI I wouldn't sacrifice. If Roberts decides the next coach isn't worth playing for, shake his hand and let him walk. But make him come to campus and spend the day with the new guy first.
-

I don't agree. No one us telling him that now he has to pay his way. The kid will not only still be allowed to come here, but now he'll have a much better coach to learn from.
He can't leave, and he won't want to either. It's a perfect situation. Play a bit as a frosh, star as a soph. A lot of kids are attracted to that.
granting him a release would be the right thing to do.

Loked Monasch reference to Ron in his coaching change commentary. Make keeping this kid a priority. Kids usually get over initial reaction if reached out to. Better still, hire his AAU coach. Only kidding!
-
I think that would be a loophole. The kid already committed so if we hired his AAU coach I don't think that would be breaking any rules.

Why is everyone acting like this kid Roberts is the next Kevin Garnett? He's good but not even a four star recruit. Seen him play and he isn't as good as Burrell in high school. If he wants to go let him go.

Agreed, If Greenberg comes here, he has a 4 star player for '10 and '11, I'd rather have those guys than Ron.
-
I like Ron as a player and definitely think he has some pretty good potential. I'd prefer he stays in the program than having an open scholarship. He can be a good player.
-
he is pretty good , yes. But I have read some posts that he is a future pro, Norm's best recruit ever etc... He is neither of the two. I would not mind having an open scholarship to tell you the truth. The focus should be for 2011 anyway. That is the most important recruiting year in St. John's History to be honest, and they must make the tournament next year. New coach has to make his stamp.

Theyll already have 9 scholarships for 2011

Watch the schools line up for him if he ends up getting his release.
Have you ever seen him play a game for St. Peter's..?

I don't care what team he made...
#1. he plays with a certified chucker in Miles Davis so that factors into numbers.
#2. the kid is still developing and growing, only his second year of super competetive hoops
#3. according to his coach he works and works to get better and has fantastic attitude
I will go with my eyes telling me the truth over what Hoop Scoop ranking has to say.

PMG- is Ron going to open up his recruiting again? Or will he wait to see who is brought in as coach? thanks..

Ron signed a LOI, so St. John's has to let him re-open his recruiting. He will wait and see who the new coach is.

Think Ron wants to come play for Lavin?

They're not required to release him. But it would be the right thing to do if he doesn't want to come here anymore. it would look bad on the school as well so most schools release their players.
-
Did Ron Roberts actually choose to come to SJU because of Norm Roberts?
If that's the case, and he wants to leave, let him.

I know they don't have to Dave. I was trying to state that St. John's would have to be the one to let him out of the LOI and that Ron can't be the one to backout. Rereading it I can see how it was confusing.
-
I have been out of the loop the last few days , I had back surgery.. I made some calls today to see what the deal was with Roberts now but nothing back yet.
-
Ouch. Hope you're recuperating well.

According, to PMG on the Big East Boards.... I wonder why he didn't post it over on this board. Oh, well! We'll eventually find out how much truth is to it.

"Word from good NJ sources is that Ron Roberts & St. John's have agreed to part ways."

You know, board beef goes on. Good luck to Roberts (IF TRUE. I WILL WAIT ON "REAL REPORTING" ON THIS ONE ;D and I am sure Zagoria will be checking in on it), and if he signs with another team and it doesn't work out, maybe he can transfer home.
Room for a player to develop next season and/ or a JUCO big man who can alleviate the pressure on the 6-9 newcomers in 2011 (hoping the staff will hold some schollies for 2012).

Lets be clear, I have no "board beef".
I very rarely will post same thing on mutliple sites like some. I choose to post on BEB by my own choice, no other reason.

That's fair, and your choice. I take back the board beef comment, not really aimed at you anyway. How do you feel about Roberts/ St. John's separation? is the kid going to go ACC (Maryland?) or Big East or A-10?
-
Honestly who cares who posts what where?
In a few minutes, it's everywhere. True or not.
Team needs a legit lead guard.
-
Roberts would have been our first NJ recruit in a few years. If it was his choice, that's "ok". If he was "pushed out" that might create some bad feelings in the NJ coaching community. In any case, reports were this kid was going to be very good. I'm hoping that he is not replaced with a Juco but with a "5 star" type player for next season. Will be interesting to see how Steve's first player decision turns out.
-
A little disappointed because this kid seemed like a player but if we can replace him with a good PF or PG then we would be better off.

Personally, I think its a mistake. I really like Ron Roberts game and think he has NBA potenital.
Big schools will line up to land this kid when he officailly becomes available.
One thing that could be a positive. . it probably takes us out of the race for Myles Davis and I don't think he will be a good high level Div I player.

I think Lavin owes to the 9 seniors to get them a BE level lead guard who can help organize the offense.
Boothe would be a terrific backup, and then, maybe we'd be on the bubble.

I was actually looking forward to seeing Roberts in a Johnnies uni. It seemed like his game was coming around and he could possibly reach the apex of his game, as a Johnny.
Dang! Hopefully, we have someone who is on par or better than Roberts in the fold. Good luck, Ronald!
-
Ron must believe he can go to a big-time school. Correct me if i'm wrong, but Norm locked this kid up, and then he blew up.(good job Norm) He probably wanted to do this anyway, the coaching change made it that much easier. Hope it works out for him and St.john's.
I'm not losing sleep over it though.

Was it really a good job by Norm Roberts? He found a sleeper. What he always finds.
The thing is, if Ron Roberts plays the 3 or the 4, and this team doesn't need that for next year.
They need a lead guard. Any other position just creates a bigger log jam and kills any chance
we have of doing any damage with 9 seniors.
This recruit, like so many before him, just shows poor planning by Norm Roberts.
-
scholly opens up for Lamb or Selby?
-
I agree with you, Poison, but would add that a big man who gets spot time next year and an offseason of training to be ready to start in 2011 is also a good idea; considering that many bigs take time to adjust to college.

St Johns commit Ron Roberts has received a release from NLI & will reopen recruitment, per his coaches #stjbb
-
Sources in New Jersey told The Post that St. Peter’s Prep star Ron Roberts, who signed with St. John’s last year, probably will re-open his recruitment. He almost surely will be granted his release from St. John’s, which remains interested in the power forward but understands the player’s desire to explore his options now that a new staff is in place.

Lavin now has a scholarshp to give after 6-7 St. Peter’s Prep forward Ronald Roberts was released from his Letter of Intent Tuesday. Roberts had been former coach Norm Roberts’ lone signee for 2010.
“This morning Ron and his father asked for their official release from St. John’s,†St. Peter’s Prep coach Mike Kelly said. “That was subsequent to a meeting [Monday] night with the coaching staff at St Peter’s Prep and his family. We were concerned that St. John’s coaching staff had no familiarity with Ron and it was in our best interest to move on.â€
Kelly said Roberts would reconsider his options and that St. Joe’s was “certainly a school that showed a lot of love early on in the process.
“Coach [Phil] Martelli has gotten a number of guys into the pros and had some great teams so they’re definitely high on our list. But Ron hasn’t made any firm decisions yet.â€
The NCAA is currently in a dead period which ends Friday, but sources said St. Joe’s was “trying to set a meeting [with Roberts] as soon as possible.â€
-
is he allowed to sign in the Big East again?
-
is he allowed to sign in the Big East again?
No.
-
He would have to be clueless to choose the A10 over us, and Lavin.
I don't believe that story.
-
But if he feels he'll get recruited over... the A-10 is a great place to get exposure.
-
I bet St. Joes fans are getting hyped. They've been on him for a long time.
-
A month ago this kid was an NBA prospect, now he'd possibly be recruited over? This seems like a reach, unless our fans in the know overhyped him because he's our only incoming freshman.
That I'd believe.
-
Was very curious to see what Roberts could do at the next level?
Does anyone know the terms of his release from his NLI? Cant wait to see who we fill this spot with

I assume that it is an unconditional release. However he still can't sign with another Big East team.
-
Rumblings that Grasso is on Roberts.
-
Where's all the love from big schools for Mr. Roberts? He'd be lucky to get an offer from St.John's now. Looks like a lot of hype to me.
-
Rumblings that Grasso is on Roberts.
Most of Norm's recruits were at a MAAC level in terms of talent.
So that actually makes perfect sense.
-
Former St. John's signee Ronald Roberts will visit Virginia this wknd and Georgia Tech next. Will decide between those 2 & St. Joe's.-zagoria
-
He has to be a little better then MAAC talent if Hewitt is giving him a look.
I'd still rather have this kid then any cali kid. Roberts will have a better college career then Poole will have.
-

If he was really a potential star he never would have agreed to play for Norm Roberts. That's all we need to know about him.
I wish him luck at Virginia if that is where he decides to go.
As far as a "MAAC talent" goes, Virginia would lose to every MAAC team except for Loyola and Marist. Being recruited by them is actually insulting.

The great Lance Stephenson is the best player to come out of NY in years, and he's not even a 3rd team
all BE.
NY overhypes their players because it's the biggest market in the country. Polee is ranked #29 by Max Preps. Roberts made 3rd team NJ. Who would you rather have?

To St. Joe's according to Zags

He's also the #31 SF on scout and not ranked on Rivals. Lets not make Polee out to be a MCD AA.
-
Scout had Dele Coker as a four star recruit.
What the hell do they know?
-
the only ratings i really look at anymore are espn's...rivals is crap, so is scout, and maxpreps i have never even looked at but i dont imagine they are any diff than the other shitty recruiting services if they have polee that high...hes not a top 30 prospect
-
ESPN's ratings are rather spotty as well.
Dele Coker has the skills that would rate him highly as a center prospect. Since most centers are simply prospects; you're looking for a big guy who can rebound, defend and actually run. Coker can do a lot of that, he just hasn't developed. Very few centers are able to step on the court as a frosh and contribute.
-
on his way to St. Joes ;)
-
Kid plays very hard. Hope the kids on our team are watching these games and learn a thing or two.
-
Was going to post something about him. Lavin thought Polee was better. So did almost everyone on here. Roberts did have a nice few seasons
-

Polee and Roberts were both very good players that could have helped this team win.
-
Polee left. He wasn't pushed out. Roberts, obviously, was a mistake on Lavin's part. We could have used a guy like him.
-
Whomever leaves, plays in the tournament
