This was just released, came out of no where.
Dwight Meikle · F · 6-9 · 185 · Fr.-H.S. · Uniondale, N.Y. (Quality Education Academy, (N.C)
Friday, Nov. 16, 2010 – 11:30 a.m.
"Dwight is a New York native returning home. He is a long, highly-skilled athlete who really shoots it well for his size," said Lavin. "His versatility and ability to play the power and small forward positions make him a great fit for the future of our program, in terms of our game-planning."
Meikle is an extremely-skilled forward and his perimeter game makes him a matchup nightmare for opponents. He utilizes his long frame and athleticism as an imposing shot blocker who can swing the momentum of a game with one dominating swat. Through five games in 2010-11, Meikle is averaging 13.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks for Quality Education Academy where he is teammates with fellow St. John’s recruit Sir’Dominic Pointer. His coach at Quality Education Academy is Isaac Pitts.
“He’s a matchup problem for everybody he faces because of his length and ability to stretch defenses with the 3-ball,” Pitts said. “He’s very skilled and athletic.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dwight committed to Coach Lav while he was "walking the yard" at Alcatraz. St. John's discovered him when recruiting Dom Pointer.
-
Is he a Juco? Says he plays at Pointers HS.
-
He is not a JUCO, i misread a title.
-
fixed the title, sry for the confusion
-
Anyone know anything about this guy?
He's a 2-star on ESPN.
-

NP...this guy a 2011 or 2012?
Obvioulsy i have no idea but you have to trust Lavin. More size, another athlete, versitile, New Yorker and hopefully an inroad developing to Quality Education
-
he is 2011
He is Dom Pointers room mate.
Meikle was ready to commit to St. John's strictly on the word of Pointer, but Lavin insisted him see the campus. And he committed to Lavin as they were taking their tour of Alcatraz.
-
i can't believe someone actually fell off jungle johnny's radar. great job, pinstr1pz with the quick info.
-
thanks newsman13
It seems like no one knew about this
-
PER ZAGS BLOG-
“Yes, he committed before he ever visited,” Quality Education coach Isaac Pitts said by phone. “He was familiar with St. John’s from being born there [in New York]. Dom Pointer committed and that’s his roommate. He knew a lot about it. Sometimes it’s players recruiting players.”
Pitts said Meikle chose the Johnnies over Seton Hall and Rice.
“I kind of felt like he was going to go to Seton Hall,” Pitts said. “I guess when Dominic committed and signed, they’re really good friends.”
Pitts said Meikle can help the Johnnies in the frontcourt with his skill-set. He’s averaging 17.5 points and eight rebounds as the team is off to a 5-0 start.

Now 2011, should've been 2010
Frankly, I thought he was better suited to be an upper-echelon mid-major player. He ran with the Georgia Elite. He transferred into Pitts' program from Southwest DeKalb (an Atlanta area school). After this year, I'd rather not have anything to do with QEA.

Thanks for the info. Are there some ethical concerns with the school or coach?
-
This is out of the blue. Does anyone know anything about him?
-
Kid has no profile at all on Scout,
and is ranked mid-major level on ESPN.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/104004 (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/104004)
Is he that underrated ?
ESPN has him @ 6'6" but SJU press release & QE HS website says 6'9"
Sounds like his game & height have grown the last year.
-
Has anyone seen Dwight Meikle play? How good is he?
-
I didn't think we would get 10 elite recruits, so if the staff sees something in this kid that they can work with, then so be it. I'm sure they know what they are doing.

ST. JOHN’S ADDS SEVENTH MEMBER OF 2011 RECRUITING CLASS WITH DWIGHT MEIKLE
November 16, 2010 by NBE Blogger
BY JEFF BORZELLO
Steve Lavin has made waves in the recruiting world by picking up highly-ranked recruits from across the country before even coaching a game for St. John’s.
Well, despite the Red Storm’s loss last night to Saint Mary’s, Lavin did not miss a beat on the recruiting trail, picking up yet another commitment today.
This pledge comes from Dwight Meikle, an under-the-radar prospect from Quality Education Academy (N.C.). Meikle, a 6-foot-9 forward, is fellow Red Storm signee Sir’Dominic Pointer’s roommate.
“He was all geared up to go to Seton Hall, to be honest, but players recruit players,” QEA coach Isaac Pitts said. “With him and Dominic being roommates, I guess they got to talking.”
Not many people saw this commitment coming, but Pitts said the relationship between Lavin and Meikle had been developing for a while.
“Coach Lavin came down to see him, and loved him right away,” Pitts said. “They saw him and offered him on the spot. They knew what they were doing.”
When Meikle took a trip to the Queens campus, it basically solidified the deal for him.
“He loved the campus and the atmosphere,” Pitts said.” I think he saw it as a quiet place, sort of like our school, with small classrooms and a family atmosphere. He said, ‘This is the place for me.’”
According to Pitts, Meikle is a face-up four who can stretch the defense with his shooting ability. He is also athletic and can handle the ball well for a player his size. Overall, he seems like a match-up problem.
Meikle chose the Red Storm over Seton Hall and Rice, with Alabama, Georgia State, Appalachian State and VCU also in the mix.
Meikle flew under the radar nationally last season, coming off the bench for a supremely talented Quality Education squad. The frontcourt was comprised of Juvonte Reddic (VCU), Aaron Bowen (Georgetown) and Quincy Miller (Baylor), while Stargell Love (Baylor) manned the point.
“We were loaded last year,” Pitts said. “So he didn’t get on the floor, playing behind guys like that.”
He began to get some attention this summer, but he was still not getting much high-major attention. That all changed when Lavin came to QEA.
“When you see him, you’re going to have the same reaction Steve Lavin did: ‘Wow, how did his happen?’” Pitts said. “He’s that good.
“I think he’s a five-star kid. He slipped under the radar. For whatever reason, people weren’t able to see him play.”
Meikle, an Atlanta native who lives on Long Island, is the seventh member of the St. John’s recruiting class, joining Pointer, Nurideen Lindsey, D’Angelo Harrison, Maurice Harkless, Norvel Pelle and JaKarr Sampson.
Pitts said Meikle’s impact would be on par with the more highly-touted prospects St. John’s is bringing in.
“He’s going to make an immediate impact with Lavin bringing in 10 scholarship players,” Pitts said. “He’s no different than the other guys, except for the rankings. He’s going to make a major impact in coach Lavin’s program.
“This is unbelievable, how good he is.”

Never heard of this kid and I've been asking around unsuccessfully. NTSG seems to be the only person to know who he is.
-
He's a forward; I approve (as long as the staff gets a JUCO or two up front as well).
-

We need some beef bad !
As of now our bigs next year are all 195-205 lbs.
I was hoping to save 2 for next year (Jevon + one extra)
But if he's really 6'9" ...he's same size & weight as Achuiwa with more offensive skill ?
-
ummm ive heard a lil about him. i know they was impressed with him and lavin isnt the type to just give away a scholi. they said he is a big body and athletic. he probably is a late bloomer.
-
I have such faith in Lavin that I have no doubt that this kid is a player. Every recruit we have gotten before him was a stud and we still have a few studs in 2011 and 2012 that are interested so Lavin wouldn't sign this kid unless he knew he could be a good Big East player. This staff isn't wasting any scholarships so look for this kid to keep getting better.
-
Welcome aboard Dwight!!! Look forward to seeing on the court!
-
he adds depth we arent gonna get ever superstar and also he could be a sleeper im sure lavin will have a plan for him and everyone he recruited and is recruiting
-
Welcome, Dwight!
-
sounds good to me comes from a talented program 2

manbearpig says welcome and enjoy the ride!

I saw on Meikle's Twitter he apologized today.

During a stretch of time in the middle of October, into November, 2010, it seemed news broke nearly every week, announcing another top recruit was headed to Queens, New York to play for Coach Steve Lavin and what some have dubbed the “reborn” St. John’s Red Storm. By the end of the early signing period, eight players had signed their names on the dotted line, including six ESPN Top 100 recruits and a highly-regarded Junior College guard. There was, though, one name, the elusive eighth, with which few were familiar, that of Quality Education Academy’s (N.C.) Dwight Meikle.

Moose you still stink for not copying and pasting :2funny:
-
This is probably a positive thing for the class.
-
hmm interesting... Makes sense with Lavin recruiting Gathers and Anderson so hard for next year. Hopefully we land GG to give us more depth in the frontline
-
This scholarship never made sense to me. Another SF
Dave was this academic issues? Is he prepping? Or did he realize he won't be seeing a lot of playing time?

Purely basketball related. He wasn't going to see the floor. I've talked to well known and respected scout down south and he said eventually he's going to be a very good player but I don't think he was ever going to get a chance to be one here.
It's all for the better for both parties.
-
I think it was a good thing for us scholarship-wise. It gives us more options to add to both this year's class as well as 2012. Sub Meikle for 6'9" God's Gift who would enter as a junior and our class would look even stronger than now. Allows us to still recruit Traylor or gives us options with Gathers/Anderson and makes those scenarios more realistic. I wish Meikle good luck moving forward, but using his ship on God's Gift makes much, much more sense than on Meikle.

I wish Dwight luck, but I think this is great news. I only saw him play once and I wasn't excited. I think the staff can find a much better use for this scholarship.
-
Good luck to Dwight. Lets close the deal on God's Gift Easter sunday. seems appropriate.

It's pretty scary when there is TOO much talent out there for us. In the past under Norm, Meikle would have been a headliner. Now we're trying to figure out how to pare scholarships to squeeze as much talent on the roster as possible. Subbing Meikle for a First team JC All-American post player is just what the doctor ordered. Hopefully Lavin seals the deal with God's Gift this weekend.

I couldn't have said it better, MCN. I wish the best for Meikle, but this was probably in the best interest of both Dwight and the Johnnies. Hopefully, we can nab God's Gift after this weekend and put the fullcourt press on Anderson and Gathers for 2012.
Yikes! The thought of it IS pretty scary, as you mentioned. Good and scary.
-
Agree Mj. Land God's gift and then go hard after Anderson and Gathers. Anderson can play 5 spots on the floor. Gathers a big PF would be coming in as Pelle is progressing and hopefully God's Gift is a senior. Wuld be a great scenario with our talent at all 5 spots on the floor.
-
Exepected.
As Alex Kline tweeted a few weeks ago SJU is making room for 2012. Also because of this makes it unlikely that SJU fills that spot this year which means that it is probably just GG and not Jamari as well.

I'd prefer that it just be GG. Save the other ship for 2012. We effectively land a big center which we really needed, grabbing a junior and opening a ship for 2012. Great at all levels IF we can land GG. A tweener PF like traylor doesn't seem like it fills a need for us all that much right now. I think we can prime jakarr for that type of role.
-
From the beginning this seemed odd. I really think its similar to Mike Perez theories from last spring. We brought him in. Gave him some attention. Did a solid to Pointer and QEA staff. Now he has some momentum when prior he was relative unknown. I really think it was carefully thought out attention tactic.
Wish him the best but seeing him a couple times he wouldn't contribute for 3 yrs likely so BE isn't for him.

All I know is Moose is bring humble right now because he said at Slyfox 2 months ago that Dwight wasnt going to be here next year but Moose said not to say anything.
Nice job Moose now who is the next to commit :)
-
We need to add 3 big men. This makes sense. Him coming here never did.
-
Interesting that we even signed him in the first place but like others have said this is probably best for both parties.
-
I wish him good luck.

That would be an awesome scenerio MCNPA but that would be one too many scholies assuming jevon is still on board for 2012. Im sure lavin could figure it out but one person who we expect to be here in 2012 wouldnt be. Gathers is a must get imho

I was expecting that Stith might not be here. Looks like he might. Either way I agree that Gathers is the guy we need. I like Kyle Anderon a lot, but he'll have a bit more trouble adjusting to college defenses as well as whom he is going to be able to defend in college. I'd love to have Anderson too, but I think Gathers fits our needs and style a bit more if it comes down to landing one or the other.

Early defection?
Do you think Gathers is more important than Kyle?

I believe the staff is gonna find a way to get both Anderson and Gathers. I've had the chance to see Kyle several times and the only adjusting I really see is his adjustment to playing man-to-man defense. The thing with Anderson is he plays and reacts smartly. There will be cases, where he'll beat his man to the spot. He'll have his hands full at times in man, but he's also very long and cerebral. Considering, we like to use an array of defenses then we can hide him in a zone. Anderson is capable of playing four positions on the floor and he also will fit. He may not exactly be a need, but he his a helluva luxury.
-
Oh we might have to break this off into another thread. I like this debate a lot.

Early defections are of course possible. If Icould only have one of them I think I would chose gathers becasue of our team needs, but you couldnt go wrong with kyle and of course I would love to have them both. What about you moose?

Never seen Gathers in person. No question his videos look impressive. He is a beast. But how tall is he really? And would him coming then push everyone else OUT of the 4 spot and make the 3 even more jammed?
I would lean towards Kyle if you held a gun to my head. I want both and Jevon for another Top 5-10 class in 2012 and I do think we will have enough ships for all 3 of them.
-
I just made a new topic in general board about 2012 recruits...lets continue the discussion over there guys.
-
Expected. I think this is good news for two reasons. First, Meikle wasn't going to play next year and this opens up space for a player that can contribute immediately. Second, I think this means something is IMMINENT.
-
According to dailypress.com, Hampton University has signed two recruits from Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C., which went 26-4 in 2010-11 and finished the season ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 25 in the country in MaxPreps' Freeman Rankings.
Dwight Meikle, a 6-8 forward/guard, and Keron Brown, a 6-5 shooting guard, have signed national letters of intent to join the Pirates next season.
Meikle, a New York native who averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game as a senior, committed to St. John's in November, but was granted a release from the Red Storm on Thursday.
-
Good for him. I'll be keeping tabs on his career via cbssports.com box scores.

Technically you are not allowed to sign an NLI more then once in a 12 month period even with a release. He probably simply sign grant in aid paperwork with Hampton.
-
Whatever happend to Meikle? I know he commited to Hampton U after he was released by us, but never played.
I realize he projected as only an average player - but just one average (or even below average) D-1 player - especially a big, might have translated to a couple extra wins this past season with a SEVEN man rotation.

Who knows if he ever made it. Kid had some issues.
