Bamba mentions St. John's/Mullin has made him a "priority" around the 2:05 mark.  He seems to speak with maturity.

@AdamZagoria: Kentucky's Tony Barbee & St. John's Chris Mullin were among those watching 6-11 2017 Mohamed Bamba at yesterday's PSA/City Rocks Combine

Before Chris Mullin was announced as the new head coach for the Red Storm, Bamba admitted that St. John's never entered his mind. He said he had never heard from Steve Lavin or anyone from the Red Storm prior coaching staff, but that changed on day one of Mullin's hiring when he said the new staff reached out.

"I heard from them, and Coach Mullin told me a lot of things," Bamba said after a dominant weekend up in Springfield, Massachusetts. "He is a legend of this game so he is someone who you absolutely respect and the main thing he said was that I was going to be his #1 priority and that he hopes I stay at home."

His first St. John's experience was going up to the visit that Mullin and the new coaching staff had in hosting a number of prospects up at the school in early June. It was Bamba's first visit to the campus, and even though he admits that he didn't watch much college basketball when he was younger so he didn't get to see them during some of their stronger years, the trip to Queens that he took definitely did make an impression on him.

"It did do something for me," Bamba said of the visit to St. John's. "Coach Mullin introduced himself to me and we got to talk some basketball. I could tell he knew a lot about me and my game. It was a great experience and a good visit.

"Ever since that moment St. John's has been a constant on the trail of Bamba. Wherever Bamba has played so far during this July Live Period, Mullin and his assistants have been there as well. Once again this past weekend in Massachusetts during a workout that the PSA Cardinals hosted with Albany City Rocks, there was Mullin at center court in the stands keeping a close eye on the recruit he covets so much.

While Bamba says that he doesn't always focus on who is watching him play, even noting that he does sometimes need a reminder that the coaches are watching because he is so focused on performing and doing his thing on the court, he is aware that Mullin has been following him around, and says that it does mean a lot to him.

"It shows me that St. John's is very interested in me and I very much appreciate that," Bamba stated.

Even if he watched he is too young to have seen SJU "in their stronger years".  :(

I was about to respond saying no no arrest and Barkley and bootsy!  Then I realized these recruits were barely born for that.  Scary.

@courtcred: Mohammed Bamba is showing his skill on the glass, above the rim, and defensively for @PSACardinals. Coaches feel he's best prospect here.

@JonRothstein: Mohammed Bamba is a FREAK athlete. 2017 big man has ridiculous length. Eats everything on the glass. Hakim Warrick type body, but longer?

Sad but true. Not many of these kids are independent thinkers. They could be one and done at tons of schools and even get to showcase their skills more if they spread themselves around more.

Very accurate. Me and my friends always say if you are a top player why would you not go to Providence or St John's or a similar school. If you have a good career at these schools you become a legend who people talk about for years and years. At KU, UK, Duke etc you are just another guy. I guess being a little older then these guys you can see the plus side of being your own man and not just following trends but that is what we have these days.

I'm not sure it has to do with independent thinking rather than proven results. Why wouldn't you want to go to Duke or Kentucky if you're in top 2%

It's interesting because we are currently doing so poorly on the court, one of worst seasons in programs history yet we are also recruiting at one of the highest levels we ever have. Hopefully we can impress this kid next year if he decides to sign late.

Every coach has a brief honeymoon period where they can point the finger at the last guy and get away with it. Our window ends sometime during the 16-17 season. If we are 1-15 in mid February next year, the honeymoon period is over. If we are 8-8, there is significant hope that Mullin and his staff are on the right track.

If you recall, most fans gave Norm Roberts a full pass for year one, and many even extended that pass to year two, but by year 3, the party was over. It was clear that he was clueless.

There's that but I think Mullin had two ace recruiters and two NBA hall of famers on his staff has more to do with it. If we are terrible again next year like a few game below .500 all that won't matter because it's about results at some point.

I think it remains to be seen whether our ace recruiters will be ace recruiters for St.John's. On paper, it looks like we have a deep class joining us next season, but IMO expectations should be tempered. They weren't for this season. Every time a player picked STJ, the online fan base and local media acted like we just picked up the steal of the year at the 25th hour.

At the end of the day, this team had one recruit ranked in the top 100, and they had one player who performed like a top 100 recruit. The rest basically performed right about where their ranking ended up. For next season, there are no McDonald's All Americans in our class. We are going to be expecting a lot of out these kids, and there really isn't any way around it. Mullin has to show everyone that his vision is starting to come together, because right now, we can't see anything except terrible basketball.

We already went after him, but no dice.  Besides, it's extremely late in his recruitment and we don't have the chops to jump in late on a kid who can basically choose where he wants to go.

I've been thinking this for a bit myself.  He could come right in and be the missing piece on this team.  Besides the name, why pick Duke or Kentucky over us?  He's a first round talent right now, those teams aren't making him into one.  And look at bigs like Bolden, Jeter and even to an extent Giles get buried on the bench at Duke.  I personally would never want to be a big and go to Kentucky.  Typically the guards are out for themselves (look at how little a guy like Karl Anthony Towns was used) and Cal puts restrictions on what those guys can do.

Come here, be the face of the local team on the rise with already great guard play.  I would get pist with how often we threw into the post of guys with zero skill or ability on offense ... this would be a different story and exciting as hell.

Oh well, pipe dream over.
