Coaches?
« on: August 17, 2008, 10:06:24 AM »
Does St Johns have any former players that are coaches or assistant coaches at any level? I cant think of any. Theres something to be said about that. Alot of teams hire a young, former player who can relate to or attract recruits. Im having trouble thinking of a former player who would be a great addition as an assistant on Norms bench. Any suggestions?

Well Billy Singleton is on staff...

Norm passed on Terence Mullin when he took the job and at the time Terence was one of, if not the, best young coach in the CHSAA. .  oh ..  he also a former SJU player and had MASSIVE endorsement from Coach Carnasecca.

Mike Moses was a coach for years, ending up at Rutgers awhile back. Steve Shurina was a long time assistant then asociate head coach with Bob McKillip, then went on to become head coach at W Carolina for 3 years. But he's out of coaching now.

Here's todays trivia question...WHO is the last STJ basketball player who graduated STJ who later became an assistant coach at the university? (prior to Singleton)

Ronnie Rutledge?..  ??? .. good question.

Here are a few more "trivia" questions :

1 - Who holds the record for the amount of games played in an SJU uniform?

2 - Who holds the record for most career field goals at SJU?

3 - What player ranks second in both steals & assists for their career at SJU?

CORRECT ANSWER   Carmine Calzonetti was a full time asst coach under Carnesecca for 2 years 1979-80

Rutledge graduated from CW Post, not STJ and we went an amazing 27 years before we hired a former player to coach at STJ. All of our good and smart athletes we had here and none coached here or were encouraged to enter the coaching profession as a GA or DOB.

PS Ron Stewart ('85) has coached professionally in France for many years successfully.
