Title: Xavier 2
Post by: Wods317 on February 22, 2015, 11:11:03 AM
Close to a must win for us at home. We beat them and Georgetown and you can basically write your ticket into the dance. Xavier is like us very talented but very inconsistent. The boys know what's on the line.

I think our guys see the home stretch and are preparing to give it their all on Monday. That said, we're still not at 100% and Xavier is a well coached team, so I expect another close one. And I have STJ winning 79-70.

Dom continues his dominant play and goes off vs Xavier. 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks.
Greene continues his strong play with 17 points, and Amar Alibegovic scores a career high 8 points and pulls down 5 boards off the bench. Also he picks ups 4 fouls 16 minutes.

I fear a repeat of last year's deflating defeat at the garden that essentially killed our momentum and cost us a tourney bid.

This game is huge...a loss to Xavier really puts everything on the line vs. Georgetown and they don't match up well with them.  If they win here, they could probably afford a loss to Georgetown provided they beat Marquette.  I'd say in these last four, 2-2 with losses to GTown and Villanova and one win in the BET puts them on the bubble, 2 wins in the BET puts them in.

Why we don't match up with G'town?  Because they whipped us last week?  I bet some of you thought the same last year after they spanked us in DC, only for us to return the favor at MSG (yeah, we beat them by 25 at home in the rematch).

We certainly do match up with Georgetown, but we don't match up with anyone if DLo scores 5 points.

He doesn't have to score 30 points, but he has to get his, and other guys have to play their best game. And we need more than that. We need guys like Amar, Joey and Felix to contribute. Xavier and Georgetown have deeper benches than we do. We need everyone to be ready to play their best basketball, because we know Xavier and Georgetown will be ready.

Our disruptive defense (featuring Sir Dominic) will shift momentum in our direction during the last 10 minutes of the game and we triumph in the end.

77-73 SJU.

DLo ices the game with foul 5 shots in the last 5 minutes of play.

Obekpa flashes his enigmatic smile as the buzzer sounds.

Obekpa still misses too many layups.

Horrible call on Pointer.  How was that a foul?  We picked a poor time to hit a funk.  We could've hit the gas and blown out Xavier.  Now, we're behind again, and it's a ballgame.  Xavier was on the fence and was ready to get routed.
Title: Re: Xavier 2

Pointer's last two shots were garbage.  Gotta take better shots.

Team refused to lose.  Lavin outcoached offensively in the 2nd half, Xavier played well. Great finish, lucky to escape with this one. Will make the tournament and no one will want to play us.  Dangerous 9to11 seed depending on finish.

Lavin's timeouts again make no sense. Harrison with 4 fouls and theres a stoppage in play when X has the ball, why doesnt he take him out?
He has a tired team and maybe just maybe he knows his team better than you and me

2 games in 3 days is tough for them at this time of year. I thought it showed on all the short shots and FTs. Get a good rest for sat vs Gtown.

Lavin must have taken a few shots at halftime, his interview is hilarious. Here are some quotes: Dear in headlights, first kiss with too much teeth, Boulder on the shoulder, this team is unique because they haven't made the tournament. :D

And his comments about UCLA championships with his players! haahaha Great win, lets keep it going!

While the timeouts are weird, they seem to  have  a purpose. Lavin is continually encouraging the team to quickly get back on defense after they make a big basket. Maybe he thinks he has an advantage by setting up the defense vs. just scrambling around?

Don't always like it, but it makes sense (at times).

Our shooting was awful all game long.
But our defense in, and in the first half especially, was phenomenal.

This was a game most st johns teams of recent vintage would have lost.
And I can't say enough good things about dom.  He played fantastic.and jordan played within himself and didn't force things.  I thought that was a big sign of growth.

I was not surprised.  Bad weather, Monday night.  Most programs deal with this issue when they have a big arena to fill (Gtown last week seemed half empty).  Hell Roy Williams complained at a press conference this weekend because their arena was a morgue.

We will have a good crowd on Saturday.

We've been so inconsistent it's hard to draw the average fan.  If we would've kept up the momentum we had in Nov and December ...we would have better crowds.
But we go from ranked 15th to losing 3 straight.  Then losses to Creighton and DePaul.  So we never built the cred we needed to draw the average nyc bball fan.

That said, I hope that Saturday is a big crowd.  The school should tap into the marketing budget to run some extra ads on WFAN and tv promoting tickets for the game this week.

From the under 4:00 timeout to halftime may be the best defense I've ever seen a St. John's team play.  Also, after every game I walk out totally amazed at what Sir'Dom has done.  One of the best defensive players I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

Fair enough.
And let's be honest, even with the dorms, sju is still a commuter school.   Spring break just means kids are home with mom n dad in queens or long island.

I love the swagger the shirt states. It's a definite positive attitude and right direction to when SJU owned the city. I also think it plays well with the chips on the players shoulders.

The program needs to win consistently for large crowds to show up routinyly again.  There are positive signs that SJU fan are slowly awakening, Carnesseca areana had great crowds. The crowd was t big but it was lively.

Hopefully the team can finish strong, do well in the BET, and steal a win or two in the tournament. This will hopefully lead to a solid recruiting class that can be rebuild quickly.  I will leave the coaching situation out if this for now.

Loving to say this right now- Rysheed Jordan seems to be molding into a true point guard in front of our very eyes. Past 2 games he has 1 turnover and 12 assists. Something I thought I'd never say, but he seems to be playing the role he's expected to play these past few games which is an awesome sign.  :)

3'lo and Oblockpa looked less injured to me.  Could bode well for the future.

We all must have been rubbing our rabbit's foots hard yesterday.  Many zebra's decisions and non-decisions going our way.  And to survive a 6 for 15 ft. effort in a 1 point victory?

Team of destiny?

last night I thought X took the crowd of the game in the second half until the Dominator made a free throw about 8 minutes in.  Believe it was our first point and instead of a derisive cher it was like a sigh of relief that cracked Dom up--it seemed to relax the team and the fans alike and got us back into the game
