It was an offer Norvel Pelle couldn't refuse.

The 6-10 blue-chipper, who will be the star big man at Price High in Los Angeles this coming basketball season, got an invitation about two weeks ago to the shooting and skills camp held at St. John's over the weekend. He'd met coach Steve Lavin before and wanted a firsthand look at a program that is creating so much buzz on the East Coast.

"I've heard about what they're trying to do here," Pelle said during a break Saturday at Taffner Field House on campus. "I'm getting to know Coach Lav. I wanted to see what it's like here. ... Is St. John's on my list? Yes, it is."

Hoo-yeah!

At the very least, I hope this means that St. John's has some choice/ options of who they recruit - makes it easier when some recruit's swept off of his feet, or a recruit turns out to be a knucklehead... not that I think St. John's will get Pelle, but that will have to get recruits' notice.

On the AAU circuit, he plays for west coast hitter, Dinos Trigoinis, who ran the Pangos this past weekend in Long Beach. Lavin may be getting some help on this one. They've got some solid players as well on that team with quality offers. I spoke with one father at the event who was impressed that they brought in Hines, but particularly Dunlap. His son has some high-major offers and he called Lavin an "opportunist," but said he didn't mean it in a good or a bad way. The father sitting next to him, who has a son in the 2012 class with elite-level offers, agreed with the opportunist label on Lavin. Both said that he didn't burn any bridges before he left.

Rivals has a new article on Pelle and St. John's.....   Thanks to Moose (and Rivals) via Redmen.com

"It was very good," said Pelle. "The coaches are excellent. It went very good. Overall, it was nice. I liked being there."

Though he did not know much about St. John's new head coach Steve Lavin before the camp, Pelle had nothing but positive feedback on the Red Storm's freshest front man.

"He's a cool coach you can talk to on and off the court," Pelle said.

Outside of the campus life, Pelle appreciated the experience of New York life.

"I love New York," Pelle emphatically expressed,"the whole env
ironment, the fast-paced environment."

Pelle said he is considering St. John's because he likes their "style of play" and also because he has family in New York.

Moose also wrote....  "He likens himself to a more run and gun version of Durant/Garnett. He enjoys playing center. Article mentions how we haven't had one forever."

Norvel Pelle, C, Compton Magic- Easily one of the most entertaining players of the day, the near 6-foot-10 insider played with great energy. A ridiculously explosive leaper for a guy his size, he totally shut down the lane on the defensive end with his shot blocking. He can run like a wing and just needs strength to be a better finisher. He looked the part of an elite prospect on Thursday.

Norvel Pelle (Los Angeles/Price), is about as inconsistent as it gets in terms of effort and productivity, but at 6-9 his physical abilities are off the charts. He gets off the floor as quickly as quick as any big I've seen, which generally leads to spectacular blocks and above the rim finishes.

Norvel Pelle might have as much upside as any post player in the country. The long, super athletic lefty is poised to move up the rankings and will be hearing from a bunch of schools.

There are certain things a player does that are so impressive that even a writer schmo can't help but notice. That happened frequently while I watched Norvel Pelle, a 6-8 jumping jack from Los Angeles. Pelle plays for the Compton Magic and when he wasn't skywalking for ridiculous blocks he was finishing thunderously on the break. He looked to me like a young Amar'e Stoudemire. I had not been alerted about Pelle, and after a few exchanges I asked a prominent head coach who he was. "That's the biggest freak in the class," he said. Seems to me Pelle is better than the No. 55 overall ranking that Scout.com gave him, but we all know the rankings don't mean much anyway.

I believe Pelle's recruitment is definitely gonna pick up....

Norvel Pelle (Compton Magic, 2011)- It looks like Pelle is finding his stride as a basketball player. That is a frightening thing for his future opponents. Pelle is a big time talent with top of the line athleticism for a prospect with his size. He effortlessly blocks shots with either hand, finishes with either hand and runs the floor like a gazelle. The primary task for Pelle in order to put together his talents as a productive and winning basketball player is to crystallize his mental focus.

A number of schools are poised to make a big push for Pelle after witnessing his abilities in July. According to Pelle, the entire Pac-10 has offered along with St. John's, Texas, UNLV, UConn, Miami, Kansas and North Carolina.

Exactly, peter!  That is the key, if you ask me.  I want to get several of these kids to Queens (Pelle being one of 'em) for an official visit, in hopes of 'wowing' 'em.

It's gonna be interesting to see how things pan out during the early signing period.
