Jakarr Sampson - SF - Brewster Academy - Akron, OH - ST. JOHN'S

Another player excited to be at the camp was Jakarr Sampson. The 6′7 forward from “St. V” (St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron) said the thing he wants to find out most from the players is their opinions and points of view on different topics, including the league. “It’s pretty cool to get an NBA players input and ask them what it’s like to be in the league,” said Sampson.

Sampson had a top four list of schools all ready for me and some might find it surprising.

“Right now it’s St. John’s, USC, Louisville and Baylor,” said the kid who’s stock has risen dramatically over the last year. Sampson added that new St. John’s coach Steve Lavin seems like a “cool dude, you know a nice dude to hang around with.” Interesting.

Sampson does fit the Lavin profile of a long, athletic greyhound slasher-type.

He recently attended St. John’s skills and development camp, along with his mother, Dawnett Sampson, and said he’s seriously considering the Johnnies.

“I really like it out there,” he said. “I like the city. That could be a good thing and a bad thing. I like the coaches there. I feel real comfortable around there. It’s real important for me to be comfortable around the coaches. If I’m gonna spend four years with somebody, I gotta be comfortable with them.”

Not sure why that would be a bad thing. Sounds like something a mother would say.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Jakarr Sampson: Overall Sampson had mixed results for the camp, but he was excellent on the final day. The long and athletic combo forward scored a camp high of 27 points and did it every way possible. He scored off the catch and shoot, hit off the dribble, and converted down low with his length and athleticism. He needs to improve his strength and get more consistent, but when the flashes all come together like they did on Saturday it can be quite impressive.

Jakarr Sampson, SF It's been a solid couple of months for Sampson as he continues to put together an emerging skill set to go with his tremendous athleticism. The improved handle and jumper was on full display as Jakarr took on all comers in the one-on-one and two-on-two sections of the day. Sampson scored at will on anybody that got in his way and played with a tremendous amount of confidence. He can take it to the rack, knock down floaters, finish above the rim with authority or knock down a jumper. His versatility on the offensive end is a huge plus.

Jakarr Sampson says his current favorites are St. Johns, Xavier, USC and Baylor while Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Dayton and Akron are also in the picture. The fast-rising wing is trying to visit USC, Baylor and Louisville in the near future.

I love that we still remain amongst Sampson's top four schools.  Hopefully, we can eventually seal the deal.  He seems to be having a very, solid AAU season.

Northstar Basketball NBPA reports:

http://blog.northstarbball.com/2010/06/27/nbpa-top-100-camp-cavs--celtics-scouting-reports.aspx

JaKarr Sampson ’11, SF, St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH)
Height & Weight: 6’6.5, 193
Wingspan & Reach: 6’11, 8’8
PPG & High: 10.2, 27
While at NBPA Top 100 Camp, JaKarr Sampson showed why his stock has increased this spring. He has phenomenal length and versatility, and looks more like 6'8 in sneakers, whether or not that is the case. Sampson could use a few more pounds, but is active around the rim at both ends of the floor. He can handle the rock a bit, and is also an effective scorer. Sampson's 27 points in his final game tied for the high total in a game all week.

Jakarr Sampson - Sampson has been great all summer to date, but he did have his struggles on Monday. Still the highly touted 2011 combo forward was good with a few buckets off of strong right hand drives and he hit the glass to boot. Also Sampson showed his range out to 18 feet, though his bread and butter is clearly 10 feet and in. He needs to be a bigger impact player on the defensive end where he could be special, but still he was more than solid for his squad.

Drawing a huge crowd of coaches was Jakarr Sampson. He had head coaches from Louisville and Washington in the gym with assistants from Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, UCLA, Kansas, St. John's, Miami-Florida, Notre Dame, and South Florida also watching.

Jakarr Sampson - His matchup with Dawson is one to really remember. Like Dawson, Sampson also had 21 points, and several of them came on ridiculously athletic dunks. Outside of just dunking, Sampson is proving to be simply unguardable at times. His ball handling is very good, and now he is going left along with power drives to the right. He uses the bounce to get a little bit of space, and then with his long arms, high release, and leaping ability he simply rises above defenders and makes shots. When he is doing that in the mid-range, you can forget about it because it makes him impossible to stop.

Jakarr Sampson - The small forward just keeps on getting better and better. He was great during June, and that has kept on going through July. While his team struggled against the CP3 All-Stars, Sampson did not. His pull up jump shot is becoming a major weapon, and of course the athleticism is simply tough to match. Sampson also showed an ability to drive some to his left, which he hasn't done in the past. He scored over 20 in a big loss, and really was the only bright spot for his team.

JaKarr Sampson, 2011, SF, 6’7, St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH), King James Shooting Stars-

Sampson’s team was rocked by the CP3 All-Stars, but he was the best player on the floor and it really was not all that close. A versatile player who can play the one through the four, Sampson played a lot of point guard for King James, skillfully bringing the ball up the floor, surveying the floor, and usually attacking the basket off the bounce. With his height and handles, Sampson is tough for anyone to cover. Sampson projects as a three at the next level due to his length and versatility.

After a long month on the AAU circuit, JaKarr Sampson has a list of his Top 3 schools going forward.

“Baylor, Kansas and St. John’s,” the 6-foot-8, 193-pound forward from Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary said Sunday night.

Sampson is still considering other schools, including Xavier, Dayton,  Louisville, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Ohio State and Miami.

“I’m gonna try and cut that list down and take five official visits,” Sampson said.

But at this point it looks like Baylor, Kansas and St. John’s will likely get visits.

Of the Big East school, he said: “I would say St. John’s is in my top three. I really like St. John’s, actually. It will fit my playing style. They’re rebuilding their program.”

Sampson attended St. John’s skills and development camp in June, along with his mother, Dawnett Sampson, and said he’s seriously considering the Johnnies.

Steve Lavin’s staff has 10 scholarships to give for 2011 and Sampson is one of several elite players they are targeting, along with 6-8 Norvel Pelle, the No. 4 center in the Class out of Compton (Calif.).

“I like his playing style,” Sampson said of Pelle. “If he [Lavin] can get him down there that would be a nice recruiting class.”

A response:

AdamZagoria:  Don Anderson, JaKarr Sampson's AAU coach, just told me Sampson will "for sure" visit Baylor, St. John's, Louisville & Kansas with one TBD.

Anyone seen him play?

I haven't seen him play, but I've read how well he's been playing throughout the summer.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 20 when Rivals and Scout comes out with their post-summer rankings.

Maybe, Sampson didn't exactly say he has a top 3 list.  But, he probably mentioned those schools (St. John's, Baylor and Kansas), as the ones who stand out at the moment.

I guess Anderson hadn't conversed with Sampson and wanted the list ran by him before commenting on it.

I think Sampson likes St. John's:

@jeffborzello Jakarr Sampson: "If I did have a top 3, St. John's would be number one."

I stumbled upon that supposed quote by reading this assumption....  [tweet]http://twitter.com/CHJournal/status/20141958922[/tweet]

I wonder how much truth there is to that supposed quote by Sampson.  [tweet] http://twitter.com/ECoastBias/status/20158735130[/tweet]

Yes, I've seen him at multiple events, beginning with the King James in April. He plays for LeBron's former high school and his current AAU team. A thin, but athletic hybrid forward, who will probably have to play the three at the next level. Played the 4 for St.V/St.M, but changed it up depending upon the setting and opponent

And what are the academic problems (I think you mentioned this in another thread, but I don't see it right now)?
