i think that the decommitment of gathers cant be good for our recruitment of pelle, to me it just seems that hes looking for a reason to not stay with us.  i might be way off and hope im wrong.

Not related.

Agree not related.  I might just help with reeling Jakarr back in though.  I still want Obekpa here bad.  He'd replace Gathers.  While he doesn't have Gathers strengthnor offense, he's an excellent rebounder and a demon shotblocker.

i'm just plain disgusted with lack of commitment by college conferences and schizophrenic recruits just the same!
we don't need him or jakaar ! the fact remains there is a plethora of players who can take these empty slots
last i checked monroe (BXNY) CC is 1# in JC ranks lets make some offers!!!
once these kids understand that pre madonna AAU/HS is not an option this is BIG EAST basketball
And we are
ST.JOHNS!

“With him going away to New York he wants to be 100 percent sure,” Gathers said of his brother’s decision. “Back in August, that was before the Big East situation, Lavin’s health and then the ineligible players ... you want to be 100 percent sure with leaving Louisiana and going to New York. At this point in time he wasn't totally sure about his decision in going to New York.”

Need more kids like amir, pointer, wood and others who are enthusiastic and committed.  Love those types of guys who are 100% on and off the court.

it's too bad some posters sound like scorned housewives.  this doesn't seem like a total loss.  it's an important decision.  let's hope it works out.

We need more kids who are not going to be academic question marks. Garrett already is one and so is Darrick Wood.

If all of these kids we recruited were on the cout and playing, Gathers would be signing his LOI this week.

Choz is right...It sounds like he had a lot of people chirping in his ear.  But Gathers's brother needs a PR rep because you might not want to announce you are bailing on a coach with cancer during the coaches vs cancer event.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

NY is not for everyone. It's a lot of pressure.

I think the real pressure he's getting is from the local school and fans.  It also could be that he doesn't want to keep getting heat all season.  No doubt we should stay on him, but it certainly puts Lavin in a bind losing him.

Sure sounds like it, especially about Lavin's health.

We don't know that to be necessarily true.  So, you believe if all of our players were on the court then Gathers would've signed this week?  I don't know.  I'm not buying it.

Nevertheless, I'd like for the staff to stay on him, but if they feel it's a futile chase then they should move on.

Well, hold onto your seats because Norvel saying he's going to lose a lot of twitter followers today.   Seems like some announcement is imminent.  Can't say I'm optimistic about it, but hope he's signing with sju instead of going sdsu route.

That is 100% BS.  Complete and utter BS.

Just to further this, Rivals.com indicates that a source told them that Lavin's health is the main issue for the de-commitment at this point.

Just think about it.  SJU announces Coach Lavin has cancer, very treatable and will not need surgery.  And for the most part througout the summer he resumes normal duties.  Then a switch up where they announce  he has decided to have a procedure and expects to fully recover.  Then his recovery forces him to miss practices and now games.

Throw in the fact that Trent Johnson is in trouble down at LSU and saw the 2 best players in the state (Gathers and Javan Felix) leave the state. Also throw in that Gathers likes LSU football.  He goes to the games, which means he is around the campus and talks to LSU players and others.  There is no doubt he is hearing "stuff" that is not exactly flattering about SJU.  Especially about Coach Lavin.  You draw your own conclusions.

I am sure Lavin's health and the situation with the BE were his main concerns but his brother did mention the ineligible players as well so am not sure why you so readily dismissed this as a concern. Unless of course you are closer to Gathers than his brother.

Because why would that matter? By all accounts Gathers is a good student.  Unless you believe the NCAA picked on SJU and Gathers is worried he may qualify at LSU but not SJU then why would that matter?  His brother was just doing some PR.  The kid came to SJU on 10/14, long after the 3 were declared ineligible.  More importantly 2 of them were with him at Midnight Madness, Garrett and Pelle.

That would imply SJU should sign 2 star recruits who are Ivy League material that way they definitely would qualify because I am sure Gathers would prefer to play with that level of talent, no?  Kansas had 3 kids fail to qualify.  Pitino had 1 last year and another this year.  Suddenly kids don't want to go to those 2 schools.  Come on.  1 kid not qualifying does not imply another won't either.

What did change?  Lavin having his procedure.  Lavin missing MM and all the subsequent practices and the first few games.  Gathers being pressured to stay in-state and help rebuild LSU basketball.  Gathers being told Lavin may not be the coach at SJU much longer with his cancer, etc.

Jerry Meyer:

A source close to Gathers indicated that the uncertainty of head coach Steve Lavin's future is a factor in Gathers desire to wait until the spring.

Also, the Reserve (La.) Riverside Academy product has been under significant pressure to stay in-state and help build back up the LSU program. - Jerry Meyer
