Wow..wow...wow... good for him... Way to go...
Zach Braziller @NYPost_Brazille 28s
Jakarr Sampson has signed a partially guaranteed three-year deal for league minimum with Philadelphia per source. #sjubb

Congrats JaKarr!!!!
-
Congratulation Jakarr! That is a culmination of a lot hard work and dedication! Go get em!
-
Pretty surprising considering he went MIA from their summer league team but great job by Jakarr. Hard work pays off. Hopefully he sticks there.

He didn't go MIA from their summer league team. THey had two entirely different rosters of FA's in Florida and Vegas. It was discussed that he wasn't going to Vegas no matter how he played in Orlando.

Hopefully he turns it down and goes back to school to finish up his degree.

He partially made it! Who should he partially thank first?

Congrats to Jakarr!

Ben Franklin.

Wow great for Jakarr and us. Another Johnny in the nba.
-
Wonder what partially guaranteed means here. Worst-case scenario, means that he contract only becomes guaranteed if he makes it though a certain date (similar to Chris Smith deal with Knicks last year). So JaKarr could end up with nothing other than NBA training camp experience and a trip to the NBDL.

Even if this happens, it's still more than many of us expected JaKarr to achieve, at least at this stage of the game.
-
Congrats!
It goes without saying, a partially guaranteed contract is better than no contract. Keep up the hard work!
-
Great news for Jakarr. I'm very happy for him.
I worry this will provide additional encouragement to guys like Obekpa and Jordan to leave early even if they're not expected to be drafted.
-
Partially guaranteed probably refers to the money aspect of the 3 year contract in the event he is cut before it's completion. Actually any guaranteed money for an undrafted free agent before even training camp seems like a pretty good accomplishment at this point of his career. But how can any of this be when Marillac basically says that JaKarr sucks and even a college team is better off without him? :)

Sixers aren't exactly the team to set standards by. I find this baffling, but I am happy for him. He's a good kid.
I don't like what this will do for a few of our other guys next season.

I hear you but I am sure they will be able to tell a big difference between Moe and his guaranteed salary and Jakarr and his partially guaranteed deal. The Jeremy Lins of the world are few and far between. Same with the lance Stephensons. First round draft pick still should carry much more weight (I would hope). Obekpa I could see bouncing regardless but hopefully Rysheed is smart enough to see the difference.

If JaKarr makes the team and is sent back to NBDL before season's end, would he automatically receive the $507k league minimum for rookies?
-
If JaKarr makes the team and is sent back to NBDL before season's end, would he automatically receive the $507k league minimum for rookies?
I'd guess that part of the first year 507K is guaranteed and the remainder is not, contingent on his status. (And my guesses nearly got me through public school.) Incentive to sign, incentive to perform, no liability for the 6ers if he doesn't pan out.

Exactly. Sometimes these deals are "guaranteed" for as little as 25K or 50K --- great no doubt for Jakarr regardless, but I would expect a minimal amount of money guaranteed bc they see potential in him and wanted to scoop him up in case they believe that potential can be realized as a member of the 76ers.
-
Still no word on Jakarr's guarantee, but for example, the Sixers also signed Ronald Roberts, and he was partially guaranteed with the guarantee at $35K.
-
surprised no one has bought up that Jakarr played last night. played for 16 minutes.
he appeared tentative. struggled to keep his man in front of him. he needs to get stronger.

Sampson signed a 3-year deal worth $2,332,826 according to http://www.spotrac.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/jakarr-sampson/ (http://www.spotrac.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/jakarr-sampson/) No guarantee according to that site.
Outside of the locks to make the roster at PF, the other three hopefuls besides Sampson have similar deals but with guaranteed money. Brandon Davies signed a three-year deal last year for 2.25 million with first year guaranteed at 490k. Jarvis Varnado signed a three year deal for two million last yearwith 246k guaranteed--75k of that guaranteed for this season. Roberts signed the same deal as Sampson, but is guaranteed 35k this year. Jerami Grant (SF) signed a three year deal for 2.7 mill with 1.7 guaranteed.
I just don't see any way he makes the roster. The Sixers owe too much guaranteed money to too many PFs: Moultrie (1,136,160), Noel (9 mill), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (4 mill), etc.

The bad news is that Marillac is cherry picking data to support his insane theory that Jakarr Sampson is not good at basketball. The good news is Marillac has not yet started referring to himself in the third person.

Another site mentioned that the contract only becomes guaranteed if he makes the final roster cut, which might help explain the confusion between whether or not it's guaranteed - but who knows. I wouldn't be worried about the contract having much bearing on whether or not he makes the team. The 76ers are so far under the cap they can afford to take a couple of hits by cutting more "guaranteed" contracts.
FWIW, on his ESPN.com player id page it states he has 4 years remaining on his contract. Seems like no one really knows what the hell contract he signed, lol.

He knows the Sixers are going to pick whoever plays the worst. #tanking

Marillac did not cherry pick data...Marillac relied on the only site that supplied actual #s of the contract. Sampson will not make the final roster.

Sampson is starting in tonight's game.
Has anyone watched the game at all to see if his jumper form has improved?
I just got home. He's 2-3 from the field, and 1-2 from the three point line with 4 rebounds at the 4 minute mark in the 3rd quarter.
-
He's playing well. Good for him.
-
He's playing well. Good for him.
He finished 3-4 from the field, 1-2 from three, 2 of 3 from thee point line, 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers... 26 minutes of play.
-
He actually played SG because MCW, Grant, Elliot Williams, Hollis Thompson, and Alexy Shved were all injured. The game was played at Syracuse and the coach said that and the fact that it was against the Knicks figured into Sampson getting the start after a good week of practice.

Orlando vs. Philly pre-season game last night:
Sampson: 4-7 from the field; 1-1 from three point line; 9 points; five rebounds (one offensive); 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers in 23 minutes of time.
Is he going to make the team?
Harkless in the same game:
6 for 13 from the field; 0-2 from three; 2-6 from the point line. 14 points; 7 rebounds (2 offensive); 2 assists, 3 steals; 2 blocks; 1 turnover. 30 minutes of time. Other than the free throw shooting, that's a pretty good line.

He had been 5 for 6 in the prior three pre-season games. But last night's efforts was disappointing. He has get that together if he wants to be a starter/real contributor on a team and get a decent contract.

57% and 59% his first 2 years is bad. Shaq bad.

He has hit some 3s at the NBA longer distance and couldn't hit any for us last year at a shorter distance. Amazing what hard work will do when you start seeing those dollar signs in your head.

"Sampson's strengths
JaKarr Sampson is far from deterred by being an undrafted free agent. The Sixers rookie sees it as just another barrier he'll overcome.
"My back has been against the wall plenty of times in my life," said Sampson, who left St. John's after his sophomore season in March. "So it's nothing new. That's what I live for. That's why I'm thriving. I just use it for motivation."
The 6-foot-9 swingman was averaging 2.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 15.1 minutes heading into Monday's game. Sampson, who failed to score and had three rebounds against Brooklyn, is making his mark on the defensive end.
"I think JaKarr is the one that's impressed me," Brown said of the borderline players. "If we were to go rate who are the best defensive players on the team, he's amongst that handful of players. That counts for something."
Sampson won Big East rookie of the year honors as a freshman with the Red Storm. He finished his college career with 915 points and 420 rebounds.
With the Sixers, he has moved from power forward to swingman and has been a natural defensively. The jovial Sampson has also been a great locker-room guy.
"The thing I respect as much as anything about him, he comes every day with a great personality," Brown said. "He comes with life. He's got spirit. He's got energy. He's just good to coach. He's good to be around. He's great for the group."

I would love to be wrong, but I see this as inevitable whether it is next week or after two months. He's a great kid. I'm glad he's finally taken it upon himself to put on some muscle and improve his game, but he's not an NBA player right now. I will cheer him on like I cheer on all of SJU's alumni.

Way to go Jakarr. Good for you!
-
Great persistence by the undrafted Jakarr--keep up the hard work; it pays off
-
Jak believed in himself when it seemed like no one else would.
His persistence through being undrafted and working his way on to an NBA roster is admirable and inspiring.
He is now amongst the best 450 basketball players in the world.
Leaving as a 21 year old college sophomore who spent 2 years at prep school after 4 full HS years shouldn't of upset anyone. Everyone in the St. John's family of supporters should whole heartedly support him, he's now a great representative of the program and is going to practice everyday with the Sixers with a smile on his face and a great attitude.
Congrats Jak!

It's good for him and a good day for the Program too.

For the record, I thought it was a careless move too when he left early, and I'm still not convinced that it isn't careless.
Let's remember that until he gets a guaranteed contract, his job is as secure as everyone else's.

Congrats to JaKarr! Hope the Sixers let him play and he can show the world what he can do.

He'll get run. Last season the ball boys averaged 10 minutes a game

you're right, he got 8 minutes. Went 0-4, 0-2 from 3, 1 reb, 1 to, and 2 fouls.

Hey, don't short-change him! He also had 3 assists and a steal.

Sampson's first win in an NBA uniform

There is a picture of Jakarr on the NY Times website home page right now.
There is an article on how 76ers owners are trying to build it up.
So the picture is Jakarr and a few other guys on the bench.

@Joshua_Newman: Caught up with former St. John's star/Sixers rookie JaKarr Sampson, who remains a super-nice kid. I'll have a little something shortly
@Joshua_Newman: Sampson says he has no regrets about leaving early, but he at least hesitated and smiled based on the start the Johnnies are off to.
Asked why this "Third Person self-proclaimed guru" on JJ always rips him. :)

Marillac is no guru. Just someone that would like to see posters give the coach and the team the benefit of the doubt. If it takes pulling up past posts to show that he's not always wrong...so be it.

For all intents and purposes, Jakarr's $507,336 salary became GUARANTEED today. Saturday is the official deadline, but yesterday at 4pm was the deadline that teams could waive a player AND have him clear waivers prior to Saturday.
Congrats to Jakarr for making it in the league AND for a guaranteed full year salary. Poison, or anyone else who was critical, does this now change your opinion as to whether leaving was a smart move for Jakarr and his family?
-
He also had a career high 11 pts last night, to go along with 7 Rebounds, 5 Assists, and 1 Steal.

He has hired Marillac as player development coach. :)

Wonder if that was directly related to the guaranteeing of his contract (4pm was the deadline for all intents and purposes) at 4pm. Have to think it's hard not to play "not to get cut" with that kind of difference in salary! Best of luck to JKS for the remainder of the season!

I think he got really lucky . He took a big chance and so far it has worked out. Hope he gets atleast 1 more year. Leaving early when you are not projected to be a 1st round choice is never a smart choice.

Harkless in Europe next year?

I can't believe he somehow got 5 assists, wow.

1. Off-topic, why dont you start a new thread.
2. In a positive thread about Jakarr, you have to make it negative. I'm here if you need a hug buddy.
3. I'll bet you anything you want Harkless is in the NBA next year.

Not off topic. Someone talked of Harkless earlier in the thread. I like Harkless, too bad he's not on Knicks, plenty of minutes. Actually, too bad he's not at ST Johns

Never...except for Jakarr, who just made half a mil doing exactly that ;)

Real happy for JaKarr, he was a good dude while he was here.

Really nice line for Jakarr last night - 24 minutes, 13 pts (2-2 3pt) and 8 rebounds

NY Post had an article on Orlando Sanchez. He is averaging 9 pts and 6.7 rebs and in the D League Showcase he lead with 27 and 12. Says Knicks have plans for him to be on roster next season however a western conf playoff team is interested in signing him. Yup, Karr and Sanchez, addition by subtraction.

Sanchez played here, and he wasn't particularly good anything. As far I'm concerned the Knicks can't lose enough games. Neither can the Sixers. Both guys may make an nba roster, and they may even get paid well, but when they were here, it was usually one disappointment after another.
Sanchez wasn't even good enough for the BE. If the Knicks actually sign him, then perfect.
F them. Idiots.

Whitehead may be in the league soon as well, but SH would be better off if he never suited up. They were on fire when he was hurt and suck since he's been back. 4-4 in conference with an OT loss to Butler and a four point loss to Depaul (wins over SJU and Nova). They are 1-5 in conference since he's been back. He's a talent, but chemistry is more important that any one talent.
Jermaine Lawrence might be the most talented player in the MAAC, but Manhattan is only 13-12 with him after winning 25 games without him last season.

Lawrence is soft and one of the most overrated players to come out of NY in years. A non factor in the Maac

I'm just not into this new age face-up four crap. Not many guys can pull it off. Hakim Warrick comes to mind. More often than not it seems like those guys disregard what PFs have to do first before they can do the other "fun stuff"...like boxing out, setting screens, playing hard D, making it easier for the guards, etc. Ty Grant didn't have 1/10th of the natural ability of Sampson, but I'd take Ty over Sampson all day long.

I'm not sure how you got that when my last post said "I'd take Ty over Sampson all day long." Ty is as NY as it gets.
Moe was the top NYC player in 2011 and I'd take Moe any day of the week. I'm fine with Obekpa and would love Diallo and Yakwe. I'd really like to bring back some of those NYC JUCO kids that left the last two years (especially Ahmed). Also, I'm the one of the biggest fans of Devonte Green and Salnave on this board.
I'm just not into 6'8 PFs that want to shoot threes and live on the perimeter instead of doing what the position calls for first. I don't care how high they project in the NBA.

If Thomas is qualified to play academically, he is the local lunch pail guy that we're missing. But he didn't make it. That makes 3 ineligible locals in 3 seasons. That sucks.

I hear what you're saying, but I've gotta disagree.
This myth has been pushed for awhile, that we're missing a lunch pail guy. Did you watch the game last night? We're missing another scorer.
Yes, we've gotten out-rebounded (and Sampson would help with that too), but we lose when we can't score. Not because we don't have a forward doing the dirty work.
I'm not saying we couldn't use a lunch-pale forward. We could. But we're really missing an athletic, scoring and rebounding PF. Aka Sampson.

At this point we have to hope that Amar can quickly turn into that guy and break out with an above average contribution off the bench.

Absolutely. and he's showing some signs of life.
The question you have to ask yourself though, is wtf happened to Christian Jones?

Think Jones maybe a transfer candidate. If the staff is going to start a 6'3' guard/forward at the center spot over you at this stage in his career it isn't a good sign for him going forward.

Speaking of four's, when was the last time we saw a St. John's power forward sprint the wing and hit a three of the catch and sprint the floor and finish a dunk, in the same game. I know you have been on him since the get go marillac but damn I am thrilled with the play and potential that Amar has show. . I can't believe people think he's slow. I think he is an above average athlete and very big and long for a PF. Good skills and nice motor, just needs experience.
Just think, we'll get more out of Amar than cuse will from McCullough. Wonder what vegas had for those odds.

He had two minutes of garbage time at GTown and a ball hits him right in the hands off a missed shot and he's not even paying attention so the ball ricochets to an opposing player.

To be fair, I didn't like Amar when his signing was first announced. The only film I could find on him was Jordan blowing by him reaching on D during the Europe trip. You know how I hate bigs on the perimeter and Sanchez and Sampson did a number on me. Hearing about another big with "perimeter skills" was the last thing I wanted.
It wasn't until seeing him play in the exhibition game prior to the start of the season that I realized how enormous he was, how he didn't live on the perimeter, and that he loved to screen, box out, and played very physical with an edgy competitiveness. He has the makings of a very good pick-and-pop and pick-and-roll guy.
I don't think he is a poor athlete...the kid didn't have any time to prepare for high major US college ball and the American game. It's a big jump from American high schools to high D-1 ball...imagine the jump he made. He could really improve next season now that he understand just how fast the game is and where he has to get himself to be a big contributor.
It's crazy, but I'd take him over both Sampson and McCullough regardless of the talent disparity (knowing he's likely a four-year player).

With Sampson we could be last years team. I'll still go for the lunch pail named DuJuan Blair, or whatever the coach asks for Anthony Glover. Neither the high flier big time athlete Sampson is, with his dribbling into traffic, or giving it up as the shot clock expires. Sampson was raw and continuously showed it. Harkless played the 4 as a freshman skinny kid and rode it, being the 15 pick in the draft.
-
I'll still go for the lunch pail named DuJuan Blair,
Dejaun Blair was BE player of the year,a consensus All American and but for Blake Griffin NCAA POTY. So pretty much everyone would go for him, including nice persons like you. Lunch pail, good grief, have a brain scan or something, you're in danger of wandering off into the woods never to be seen again.
-
Internet tough guy the FOAD ! Great post!
-
Dejuan Blair was a lunchpail player IMO. He was just really really good at it (in college). 12pts/9rbs/53% shooting his first year, 15.7pts/12.3 rbs/59% shooting his second year. Just because you're a really good player, doesn't mean your style isn't that of a bruiser (or, lunchpail player). At 6'7" he banged inside against anyone, no matter how big they were. To me, that says lunch pail.
Sampson was not. Glover was. Whatever you wanna call them, I'd take any or all of those three players on this or just about any college team.....can you imagine Glover and Blair together? That would be fun.
-

We have a differing idea on the meaning and value of the lunch pail. You could have scolded me without being so nasty.

Sorry if you were offended. Sometimes I forget myself and my point gets lost. Which point was: Jakarr Sampson was a pretty good basketball player, for a sophomore. Comparing him to an All American - one who was slightly less appreciated than NBA all star Blake Griffin, one who received as many votes for player of the year as Tyler Hanbrough - is silly. Blaming him for last year is absurd. Everyone would have preferred having an All American on the roster last year rather than Sampson. It's a silly comparison.

JaKarr is super nice guy... I had courtside seats to Nuggets - Sixers a couple of weeks ago in Denver... he was super nice and pumped that there was a SJU fan at the game.. if he can get a little stronger, he can stick in the NBA...
-
I actually watched game last night vs the Knicks. Jakarr did alright and might stick around. Craziest thing I saw from him was that he was the back up point guard. Never thought I would see that. Didn't look horrible either.

Getting stronger but also get better at shooting. He's got a fit as a 3 in the NBA. Rooting for him.

WTF is Jakarr done with his hair. Went from this:

Tons of money for hair dressers in the wrong hands can be a dangerous thing.

Sampson's dunk won the ESPN SC put back dunk of the night. Mentioned that he was the undrafted former St. John's player. Good for him
-
Meanwhile stupid Knicks winning a few meaningless late season games that potentially could hurt their draft position and cost them a top 4 pick.

@ebosshoops: It’s not every night you get to see Jakarr Sampson run the point, Y'all
Great way to end the season: 22 PTs, 5 rebounds and 6 assists.

nice stat line

JaKarr had a much more interesting season than Harkless this season and that surprised me. Was at the Nets/Magic game tonight and Moe played 12 minutes and took one shot (a three) and missed it.
Glad to see JaKarr doing great though, hope the best for next season.
-
Moe had a ton of politics surrounding the benchmarks and conditions of his contract this year, IMO the Magic basically stashed him away to keep him on the cheap. I expect expanded minutes next year.
-
Jak is lighting it up from 3 with a much improved, defined stroke. It looks smooth, the hitch is gone. He just had a very strong drive and finish as well. Playing very well tn, he should continue to be the Sixers' starting SF next year.

Good for JaKarr.

Good to see JaKarr back in the NBA.
-
He had a nice line yesterday - 9 pts, 6 rebounds on 4 of 5 shooting in 18 minutes in a win vs the Bulls. Nice to see him getting some minutes.
