This is the first I'm hearing of this. Excited to see how Mullin runs practice.
Something tells me QuanMan is a big Harvey fan and will be sporting a Dark Knight costume.

Yes they did. It's the Red and White scrimmage and it is open to the public for free. They have been marketing in a little bit but seems like it will be a cool throw back event.

My understanding is that they did this whille Lou was coach and Mullin is brining it back. I'm too young to have been around for that but that what I heard from a couple people.

JPM114 and I got a chance to talk to both of them at media day. High quality people that seem to be close friends. Darien is Mr. Personality and both are eager to get the season started. We were able to stay a while for the practice that followed. Very impressive, not a minute of wasted time. Get the feeling that we will be able to surprise some teams.

Red White scrimmage needs to be held at night. It always was.  People in New York are busy on Saturday afternoons.  Would love to be there but I can't.  People don't give up there Saturday afternoons for an intrasquad scrimmage.

We have a shot at a post season tournament outside of NCAA,  this team can really shoot the ball and are so unselfish . what a breath of fresh air. Malik was a steal he can be in the league in 3 years! Christian Jones after he graduates this year should join the And 1 mixtape tour , BALL UP , Street ball all stars & Harlem Globetrotters. He doesn't have the heart for organized basketball he is getting muscled out by freshmen. Please just save SJU a scholarship and your time of rotting in the bench!

Truth.  But . . . . the scrimmage was planned before we knew the Mets would be playing tonight.  But you're right actually.  We were screwed either way.  And with all the recruits in attendence. Geez. Including Rawle.  I hope this doesn't look bad to them.
As far as the WS goes, can't resist saying this about the Royals.  Someone should inform Hosmer that you are permitted to overun first base.  Dude's going to kill himself sliding head first in there on close plays.  Slides are for slowing down into a base, not speeding up.  It does you no good.  Duhhh.  But I guess he's just too macho to learn.

My thoughts

LoVett is so much fun to watch. Please lord grant us this one wish. Can Shoot, pass, drive, and draws plenty of contact. Think hed play close to 35 minutes a game.

Ellsion is such a good athlete, probably most complete on the team. Cant believe how fast he is in a straight line. Missed some easy ones today but thought he did a great job all around. Looks ready to go.

Johnson- You can see what he is capable of, will need him to not only score but rebound and defend at a high level to compete.

Mussini- Quickest release we've had since I can remember. Thin as a  twig but seems to play stronger and quicker than he looks. Changes speeds well, couple very nice passes. Excited to see him play along side LoVett.

Sima- Tough to tell, I like his form on his jumper, really attacked the offensive glass. Obviously needs to get stronger but it seems like he has a pretty good feel for the game.

Mvouika- Hit 3-4 threes but didnt do much else. Not the quickest player so I wonder how his defense will be, got blown by a few times. If he can hit shots and be a leader than that is a great addition.

Williams- Cant get over how much he looks like Obekpa on the court. Anyone else? He hit some threes but he looks rusty out there, almost hesitant to make any moves. That one drive where he attempted the poster dunk on Sima was impressive. We will need him to commit to rebounding if we are going to be competitive.

Yakwe- Nose for the ball which is great to see. Physically strong and uses body well. His shot within 10-12 feet looks pretty good. Year off should help him develop skills.

Owens- Surprised with form on his jumper. Long and active. Great piece to have for the next 4 years.

Jones-  Jones impressed me like he has in the past. Had to have close to 12 boards which was nice to see.  Quick first step and has interior skills that this team lacks. His hands are very poor however.  Hope he gets a shot at a consistent role this year.

Amar- struggled in the game but physically looked much better.

Felix- In the beginning I saw some nice things but as the game went on he kind of disappeared. Hope his arm is ok.

15 boards for Jones! And he was jumping high for em! Hope he stays motivated.

Free throws from the big guys as expected. Hope they can clean that up but the guards shot well from the charity stripe. Amar struggled but looked less sloppy then he did last year so keep that going.

Balamou looked solid in the first half, then disappeared, then hurt his arm. So hope he's ok for Wednesday want to see more of him.

Owens and Yakwe looked good, hope they can even improve more in their red shirt year.

Williams had another surgery in the summer I was told so he's a little behind the curve.  He can clearly shoot but seemed a step or two behind at times.

Wondering how long its going to take me to shake this headache and my ears to stop ringing.  When you have so few people you don't need the PA announcer to scream and blast music.

Here's my take from today...

Johnson is the best scorer on the team. That's at least what today showed us. He can shoot the ball from all over the court, and he can drive and finish in traffic as well. It was a nice surprise. He dropped over 30 today.

LoVett had some great moments, but he was also incredibly sloppy with his passing. He hit some nice step back jumpers, and a three or two, but let's not expect him to be Marcus Hatten. That's insane.

Ellison was fun to watch. He's a freshman, and like LoVett, he was sloppy with passing as well, but he can put it on the floor and go strong to the basket. He didn't finish very well, but the ability is there. He was a great late addition. I could see him contributing as much as DJ did as a freshman.

Deron Williams was the biggest disappointment. It looks like his shot has forward rotation. He doesn't mix it up inside. Those hoping for a "beast" need to expect a different kind of player. He's soft, slow and from what I could tell, uncoordinated.

Jones actually looked ok. He's the only player who even attempted to post up. Maybe he could give us some minutes off the bench.

M'Vouika was also pretty good. He can hit a 3, and he can penetrate somewhat. Passing needs work, as it does with everyone.

Yakwe is a big time project. Maybe he can rebound, and score some inside, but he had the ugliest jump shot I've seen in a long time. Also, he seems less experienced overall than the rest of the players out there. He didn't think to pass the ball. The others were moving the ball consistently. Yakwe got the ball, and he's was going to score.

Owens seemed smart and experienced. He'll help next year. He can hit a jumper, and he can rebound. A good addition.

Mussini impressed me, but not in the way that I expected. Early on, he couldn't throw it in the ocean. But he is a great passer. He looks to run the offense. Not to find his own offense. Good for him.

Balamou was awful. A nice hard working kid. I feel bad for him.

Alibegovic was awful as well.

Sima has some potential. He's raw on d, and he has zero post up game on offense. He's going to take some time, so those saying he's better than Obekpa need to sit down immediately. He's clearky nowhere near Obekpa, even as a freshman.

Overall, this was one ugly mess. This is a new group of players and we have to accept that they will need time to learn how to play together and to find some kind of identity. Yes, they can shoot the ball, but there is a lot to work on.

I like that we are shooting a lot of threes. Obviously you have to make them but it seems like the way the game is going and we haven't had the best 3pt shooting in the recent past. We will be better then people think, excited to see how we play Wednesday even if it isn't against top competition.

One of my biggest takeaways that I'm surprised most people didnt mention was Greg St. Jean.  He was coaching his ass off out there.  From the people I spoke to he really has the respect of the players.  Likely due to his closeness in age.  This person saw many practices under Dunlap as well and says they are very similar.  They see the plays they run in practice out there on the floor and in the past that wasn't so much the case.

Personally I loved the ball movement and the concise decision making.  There wasn't futzing around and wasting time.  Aimless dribbling etc.  Everyone had a purpose with the ball.  They were thinking ahead to when they received the pass and yes there were a couple passes that were too early or telegraphed but in time that will get better I'm sure.
