I'm a 1965 grad from what was then known as the College of Business Administration. I've been a season ticket holder since 1979 and have recently been banned from The Boards for a reason or reasons I don't understand since I can't contact the moderators. Anyone else have this problem?

He is going to have lots of options. It's going to be interesting to see how the Team responds without Mookie. Peekskill players have ignored STJ for the most part but if the kid from White Plains goes to STJ that might spur other guys from the area to come aboard.

I never did an introduction.  I go by peter or picodulce, I run the <a href="http"//theeastcoastbias.wordpress.com">East Coast Bias[/url] blog (though I found out after making it there is another one by the same name).  Born in Queens (Rosedale like Malik Boothe), moved to Chicago in the last year.  And my first knowledge that St. John's was good at basketball was when I was told that Mark Jackson had attended my intermediate school.  I've been following the Johnnies off and on for years but got back into college ball in '98, and have been following the home borough team ever since.

I was a decent SJU fan in High School. But I'm now a junior at SUNY Cortland and I've become a die hard. Being with 95% Cuse fans got on my nerves and I needed a team to root for. I live about 25 minutes from the SJU campus and my dad got his MBA at SJU, so it's the perfect choice.

SJU grad 1967. First SJU games  at Alumni Hall in fall of  61. Leroy Ellis , Kevin Loughrey , Donny Burks , Willy Hall et al .  Traveled to many away games between    63 and 67  with a bunch of beserk Redmen fans from  CBA including the famous birdman, Bill Davidson . Had the wonderful experience of traveling to Lexington when we went to the Final Four. SJU hoops  are my  #1  interest .

Came to SJu in 1955. Played intramurals & was asked by Dusty D (coach) to walk on in '56. Couldn't afford to do that . Loved the Redmen & followed them ever since. Joe Lapchick came back to SJu in 1956 and started to recruit NYC. Rest is  history & most of it very good.

Somehow missed this first time around. Born and raised in Texas. Raised as a huge UT football/baseball/basketball fan. Decided to attend St. John's out of high school and started following the basketball and baseball teams religiously. I didn't graduate, ended up transferring back here in Texas, but I loved my time up there.

I rooted for Texas the last time the two played in basketball, but I rooted for St. John's in last year's baseball regional. I'm not sure why.

Obviously I have nobody down here to talk St. John's sports with, so I'm glad I found JJ.

Also, the president of my current school [St. Edward's in Austin] is a St. John's grad.

Post by: Tha Kid on March 02, 2009, 11:39:07 AM
I guess I never did this - here goes.

I have been a St. John's fan my entire life.  Both my parents went to st johns law, and my mom went to st johns undergrad as well.  My dad had season tix since 1978-79.  I was going to games with him as a toddler when Mullin/berry/jax were on the team, as a grade school kid with Sealy, Shawnelle Scott.  I went to the All-American game with Felipe and Z when optimism for St John was at a high.  I wore a bandaid on my cheek to school when EB got suspended by the NCAA unfairly.

I went to Duke for college - graduated in '05 - but St. John's will always be my #1a team with Duke as #1b - I dont' forget my roots.

I graduated from St. John's law in '08 - had season tix all 3 years and played intramurals - had a blast at st johns and am proud to be an alumni.

As much as I am sometimes critical of the program and go a lil crazy with my posting I'm a very approachable, relaxed guy - it is my sincere hope Norm can succeed though I don't think he will - and I think we have a HIGHLY talented team and cannot wait to see how Paris and DJ improve - and see how Justin does without the facemask as a junio.r  I think Justin is getting a bad rap and who knows how much pain he is in.  He's going to prove all of you wrong next year who criticize him.

We are......

Hey all,

This is my first post here. My dad went to SJU Law School back in the late-80's and started taking me to games when I was a little kid during the Malik Sealy days. We had season tickets all through the 90's, up until I went away to college (University of Delaware) in 2002. I still went to a bunch of games the next season b/c I loved Marcus Hatten, but since the Pittsburgh scandal I think I've only been to two games.

I more or less stopped following college BB (except the Tournament, obviously) during my years in college as I got more into college FB, but the last 2 years I've been really getting into it again. I'm currently in law school at American University in DC, and it depresses me to no end that they are going to make the tournament for the 2nd straight year while SJU hasn't been there since I was a senior in high school.

I've been been trying to follow the team as much possible, but they don't get much coverage down here, except when they're beating Georgetown of course. Finding this site has been great, I'm finally getting updates on my beloved Johnnies!

From LI - grew up a St. John's fan and went to and graduated from Marquette.  Live in NC now and have been paying more attention to the Johnnies since we joined the Big East.  Wish the Johnnies guys were Pitt the last 5 years.  Hard to root against the the team I rooted for as kid, wish we could play each other deeper into the tournament and not the first game for the 2nd year in a row.  Would like to see St. John's come back to consistently challenge in the top of the Big East.  It can be done - some real lean years in Marquette's past after the power teams of the 70's.  Good luck tomorrow and I look forward to visiting here and keeping up with whats happening with SJU.

Hello,

My name is Troy and i've been looking for a college basketball team to love for a few years (i'm 19). I've looked at pretty much every team there is and there just wasn't an instant passion for any team.

I very rarely hear or see anything about St. John's so I never really gave them a chance and I don't know much about the current team or the history behind the team but since they're close to home and just fired Norm Roberts I figured this was a great opportunity to give them a chance and start while the team is getting a fresh start. I also like the fact that St. John's isn't a top team right now, I hate seeming like a front runner.

I'm just hoping to learn from people here and see if I can develope a passion for the team. Thank you.

GREAT that you have lots of students & recent grads involved. Hopefully you'll motivate more people to come to the games at Carnessecca & MSG & turn it into a REAL Jungle for the opposition. THINK Cameron Crazies with out the jumping up & down!!!

New member. 1958 St. John's College. SJU basketball fan since 1951 when Garden gave discount tickets to Catholic High Schools. Saw teams of '50's, 60's with Mc Intyres, Dove, Houston, etc. & many NIT championships. Was at Elite 8 when we lost to Penn in 1978-9, loss to Duke in first round on a bad cll when they went on to win it all. Final Four in '85 & Elite 8 in '99. Also at Big East when we won Campionships. Great memories. Moved to Savannah in 1969 & coached private school & YMCA basketball team who were always called the Redmen.

Hi Redmen Fans,
I graduated from Liberal Arts School on the Jamaica Campus way back in 59'. Played varsity baseball under Jack Kaiser, also scouted for Louie when he was an assistant coach to Joe Lapchick. Everyone of my friends know how much I love the Redmen.

1976 St. J. grad and season ticket holder since a freshman. Love the Johnnys but will call things as I see them. Have great hopes for the future under coach Lavs who I hope will be here for a long time. He is the first ST J coach with a national if not global vision of our program.

Graduated in '80 and got a Masters in '91.  Season ticket holder for 15 years before moving to Texas.  Had a glad March going to see St. Joihn's in Denver even though they lost it was the 1st game in person in almost 20 years and the 1st time my daughter got to see them in person.  Then we went to San Antonio for the SW regionals and finally to the Final Four here in Houston.

Gave up my tickets after 33 years because of this stupid points system that was installed. I dont even know if they are still using the points system.

St. John's fan since the Mullin/Berry years. Not a St. John's alum but loved number 20 at a young age and got to see a Final Four when I was all of 8 years old. As most of you, I've been through all the ups and downs of the last 30 years and finally see a LARGE light at the end of the tunnel.
Some of you might remember me from the other site, but things aren't looking so hot over there, so I figured I join the site I lurk on quite often. Might be kind of quiet during the slow points of the year, but once the games get going, I'll be in the game threads.

New to the board, but not to the SJU boards.  Mod over at redmen.com, but need a place to discuss hoops until things get fixed.  Been a fan since birth.  Both my parents went to SJU (both have undergrads and advanced degrees from SJU).  Numerous Aunts and Uncles attended the school.  Even have a former president of SJU in the family blood lines.  Our family had season tickets for over 40 years until the reign of Norm started.  Will likely be starting a new trend next year.  Long live Lavin.

A fan for 53 years, a 50 year grad from CBA, a former president of the StJ student booster society, and a two year on court stint as mascot in the aboriginal american mascot days. I've attended about 400 StJ games home and away and saw a total of over 1000 games involving the RedStorm starting from the Alan Seiden, Gus Allfieri days. I look forward to at least 500 more before it's over providing this year's new class of  freshmen don't kill me in the process. These guys are good but to quote Coach Lapchick, "the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores".  Regardless, it should be fun week toweek.  We are...........................St. Johns

Boy, was I mis-informed.  Looking forward to TCU joining the BE  -  I can watch the Redmen play in Fort Worth (30 mins from where I live now).  Spent a lot of time on redmen.com but glad to have found a new home.

I'm Joe on redmen.com-or was-hope to be again, but enjoy this site a great deal as well, and thank you Dave for putting it together.
Became a SJU fan because Louie reminded me of my father-more his mannerisms than looks.  Also, since the college I went to had 600 students-in the middle of Kansas- there wasn't much to look at when it came to basketball.
Haven't posted much in the past few years-wasn't a lot to talk about for much of that time (save this past year).
Here's to SJU's revival!

There are hackers and spammers out there that ruin boards. These are the measures I have to take in order to insure everyone's safety and privacy here. Maybe you fail to realize the time, effort, and resources that are poured to provide you a FREE community to obtain breaking news and discuss various topics/issues about St. John's in a 1st class atmosphere. I really can't believe your audacity to complain.

Turned 61 last month (March). Must have been a member of Redmen.com for 6 or 7 years. Mostly read the posts, since I don't live in the city, and don't get to see too many St. John's games on the TV, I would read the posts of the guys who actually went to the games. I guess I started following the Red Storm/Redmen around 1975, while I was still living in the city. It may have been the year that they beat Oral Roberts in the 2nd round of the NIT. I know I was a full fledged fan during that magical run they had in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. I do recall seeing at least one of their games on old B&W television, during Joe Lapchick's days.

Long Island born and raised huge Mets/Jets fan and have always lightly followed St. John's since they were the local team in a major conference. Now that I will be attending for the next 3 years I'm very excited about the team and going to some games! I love what Lavin has done with this team and it looks like St. John's is going to be a contender in the Big East again. What a great time for NY basketball with the Knicks coming along too.

Hi all, new member here. am older so my interest in NCAA BB is based on the original Big East Conference teams that started the conference. With recent defections, its down to just five original members but its such a storied conference and to me, is the essence of college BB in the North East. As a native NY'er St Johns is who I root for an go to a few games on campus and at the Garden each year. Hope the 2012 team is exciting to follow. I'm happy I've found this forum..

I'm a junior on campus here, I try to look at the team from a more technical perspective rather than a fan perspective. I try and scout teams from games on ESPN3 from time to time, hopefully I'll be able to continue that and share my thoughts on the board.

On campus I used to wear my st. john's jersey to Gampel when we played there. One year a buddy of mine won the lottery for student tickets for UConn in the Big East tourney and he brought me and I wore a st. john's jersey sitting with all the UConn students even though we weren't playing lol. Graduated in 2005 so unfortunately I was on campus and had to witness the Husky fans celebrating their title in 2004. My glory days are really the Marcus Hatten era lol.

Long time lurker. Never attended SJU, but the school I attended doesn't have a d1 team, have been a fan of the Red Storm since I started following college hoops which was around 1990. I probably won't post much but figured i should introduce myself nonetheless.

Still a fan after all these years. Happy to say I'm working with a SJU former player (Graduate), Tyrone Grant's TEAMFIRSTNY.com NFP which offers after school & community programs supporting academic enrichment, life skills & athletic skills development.

Check out his web site TeamFirstNY.com. Great video on there from the NCAA/Buick series high lighting NCAA grads who are giving back to their communities. SJU should be proud of his work.

Hello all. I am a real oldtimer from the days of the mid 60s. I remember when a ticket to Alumni was $5. Used to down a few after the game at Sams. Does anyone else remember that great institution of lower learning??

Just found this thread.  A Fordham grad, I commuted but hung in Queens.  Grew up following SJU, played Pickup in the gym n the late 60s.  If you frequented Sams you probably remember some of my SJU friends, Hurl the Pearl, the Conklin brothers, Pat lynch.  Cahill referred to be as the a rear of a donkey hippy from Fordham.  Living in Saratoga Springs.

Hey I'm Jonathan. I'm a Queens native. Graduated Manhattan College in 2013. I am a big Jaspers fan. I am currently a grad student in history MA program at St. John's. Grew up a Hofstra and St. John's fan, now my alliances lie with Manhattan and St. John's. I started to really follow the SJU program this year. Saw my first game live against Marquette at the Garden. Sir Dom was easily my favorite SJU player, and one of the three players I most enjoyed seeing live as an MC and SJU fan. I'm looking forward to learning more about the program, and partaking in the elegant dance of rooting for two local teams. Trust me this week has been quite interesting to me as a dual fan lol

Welcome Jonathan from a fellow Jaspers grad & SJ's die hard. I go back to the Tim Cain and your new esteemed coach's playing days. I hope you know who they are as their names hang in their respective rafters.

Enjoy grad school and this board. You'll learn a lot and enjoy yourself in the process.

Hi All-

My name is Bob & I live out in Seattle ( since 1981). Graduated from Port Jefferson ( 1972) & attended St. John's CBA (1977). I played football
under Bob Ricca from 1972-1976.
My first St John's game ( Alumni Hall) was St. John's vs. Tennessee. Tennessee had a couple of local NY kids- Bernard King & Ernie Grunfeld &
was ranked no. 4 in the country. St' John's upset them. Close game. Bernard King it seemed was able to jump 1 ft. higher than anybody else.
Have been a fan ever since.

Remember that game, it was a great one. It wasn't so much that King jumped high it was what was written in that days papers that  his jump shot is in the basket before the defender can react. I remember doubting that and than seeing him shoot baseline jumpers in John Farmers face and the ball was indeed in the basket before the defender could react.

Celtics-

I do remember that when SJU played Tenn. that Tenn. was ranked no. 4 in the country. Unlike today, most games were played at Alumni Hall.
I think it's been re-named after Jack Kaiser the A.D. at the time. Or maybe the baseball stadium was named after Jack Kaiser. Not sure. Anyway,
in the early 1970's ( 1972-1976) the stars were Frank Alagia, Glen Williams & Beaver Smith. A year or so behind me was a kid named Kevin Cluess.

I was a security guard at Alumni Hall- after football season & met Kevin. I think he graduated in 1975. He was the second leading scorer on the team.
I know his brother Tim is the coach at Iona. Kevin had 3 siblings ( Tim, a sister & younger brother). Kevin & a younger brother had a genetic dis-order &
both he & the younger brother died in their 20's from a rare form of cancer. Kevin had to be the nicest people that I met at St. John's. We'd always have
the time to talk & chat about sports or academics. He'd be one of the 4-5 basketball players after their practice on a Saturday come down to watch us play football- including Louie.

I played squash a few times a week with Brian Mahoney & John Kresse. Kresse has the basketball facility named after him at the College of Charleston. Brian & John were 2 of the nicest people I ran into during my security guard duties. Great guys & Brian & John  got along very well.

I'm in the financial services industry & we have facilities in Purchase NY. My wife & I stayed at the Ritz Carlton back in 2010. We're standing outside & Chris Mullin walks out. I spent about 10 minutes chatting with him. Very intense in a good way. I couldn't be happier with SJU's choice of a coach. I think people underestimate him & I think he's going to do a great job putting NY kids on the roster and surprise some people by recruiting nationally.

Sup Guys,

First name Kelvin, but mostly everyone knows/refers to me as Forty. Attended St. John's from 2006-09 (Not going to get into full detail into what I really see the University as. Different story..), but I have been a St. John's fan since my early youth.

My first recollection of St. John's is sitting down on a Saturday afternoon with my father to watch a game when I was around 8-9. Being Dominican and growing up in a Dominican household, basketball is not the most popular sport to view or grow up playing, but there was one player my dad wanted to see, even though he knew nothing about College Basketball:

Felipe Lopez.

From there on, my fandom and love for St. John's began and I never looked back (I even remember losing to Detroit in the First Round in the tournament back in 98.)

Fun Fact: LaSalle Academy/St. John's University...me and Metta might as well be brothers.

Thanks!

BACK IN THE JUNGLE!
Had the pleasure of seeing St. John's former players/coahes at last Friday's (May 6) "Basketball Old Timers of America" Hall of Fame induction dinner at Sirroco's in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.. Tyrek Turner was there to support St. John's great Frank Alegia out of St. Agnes H.S. (Garden City L.I.)   Coach Carnesecca was there, long with former assistants, Carmine Calzinetti & Asst./Head Coach, Brian Mahoney & current Associate Head Coach Barry "Slice" Rhorresen. Super fan, Sam Albano was also in the great crowd of who's who of the NYC basketball  community.

Other notable inductees were former CHSAA coach John Carey (All Hallows) who saw two of his former players make it to the NBA (Olden Polyinice & Shawnell Scott). Along with Queen's native & retired  NBA official Lee Jones. Another high light of the night was the induction of ALL five Rafferty brothers who played H.S. basketball at Holy Cross and college ball at Fordham & St. Francis College.  This annual event is always a special night & you should try to make it to the event at least once. (Usually held on the first Friday night in May).  Contact the CHSAA Brooklyn office & ask for Ray Nash for details or St. Francis College in Brooklyn (Ask for Dennis McDermot)

Hey everyone.  Name is Dan.  Went to St. John's for two years, 91-93 ( graduated from Stony Brook in 96 ), but have always been a huge Redmen fan, starting from the mid 80's.  I miss the heyday of the Big East, when the Johnnies were relevant, with year after year NCAA tournament appearances.  I try to go to 5-10 games a season.  Here's to hoping Mullin can keep recruiting well, and get the team back on the radar in the near future.  Let's go Johnnies!

Hey everyone. Name is Paul .I'm pretty new to the forum. Ive been reading everyday now for about a week and half now. Really happy to know there are people out there as passionate about SJU basketball as I am. Ive been a fan of the Red Storm since the Felipe Lopez/Chudney Gray days. I will be graduating from St. John's in a few years with a master's in Sports Management.

I hope to provide the forum with a little basketball insight, nothing more.

Also, I picked the Freddy Mercury avatar in hopes one day soon we can play "We are the champions"  while hoisting a Big East Championship trophy at MSG.

GO JOHNNIES

Hello, my name is Alfred Hampton and I graduated in 2013. I went to St. John's to study Law ( everybody always talked about how  good the law school is), however I ended up getting my degree in Business and Psychology. I'm a second generation college graduate ( mom went to Hunter), and I love everything about our school. In case anybody else is from here, I was a  resident advisor for Donovan hall ( Nickname  Afro-big).  I wasn't a fan of SJU basketball when I arrived on campus ( I didn't watch College basketball at all), but after orientation and going to my first game I loved it. Since our school is so divided basketball was and is our school unifier.

That's my introduction, We are St. John's !

Rodman checking in from California.  I have been a fan since 1985.  The days of Mullin and Ewing battling it out in the Big East.  I cried when we lost to Depaul in the tournament a few years later.  Mark Jackson's senior year.  One of the highlights of my life was meeting Lou Carnessecca at USF several years ago and getting his autograph.  I rarely post but have been on this site for probably 10 years or more.  Go Redmen!!

Not sure why I became such a diehard St Johns fan (most people in CA have never heard of the school) but maybe it has something to do with the fact that my Dad grew up in Jersey.

WELCOME..!!

Still one of the angriest moments of watching SJU basketball. The free throw that Dallas Comegys scored on was a blatant violation and was not called. We have the ball and lead with 7 seconds left...

go to 1:03:56 mark for quick reference

**Jackson also missed a clean look at the buzzer in regulation

Imagine my SURPRISE when I opened St John's BUSINESS Magazine from FALL 2017.  I'm profiled on the right side of page 19.  I never spoke to anyone at the school.

Here's what they wrote: Bob LeMoullec '70 CBA recalls coming to school as a veteran, like many of his friends.  In his career, he has worked as an on-air street reporter at 1010 WINS, reporter at the New York Post, and producer at Fox.  He is author of the book, "The Newsroom Confessions and is an adjunct at SUNY Rockland as well as a movie extra for TV and film.

Checking in...
From Archbishop Molloy in early 60s, I would go to Alumni Hall to swim in the huge pool that once existed there.  One Holiday weekend, I watched on TV as the Redmen beat Michigan and Cazzie Russell.  What a comeback! What a team! I was hooked.
A local girlfriend and SJU basketball were key factors in keeping me home for college to attend SJU undergrad and grad schools.  Season tickets became a constant for decades until I moved to Albany in ‘84...and retired to Florida (most of the year) in 2013.
Soooo many great players...Dove, Davis, Mullin, Jackson, Warren, Artest ..the list goes on and on. Soon to include Ponds and others. So many years of pleasure and pain. I am so grateful for the ride...thank you St Johns and fellow fans...and thanks for redmen.com
