Among the schools showing interest are Georgia Tech, Maryland, Wisconsin, UCLA and George Mason, Iowa, West Virginia and St. John’s.
“Everything is open right now,†Torrel Harris said of the schools.

HARRIS VISITS ST. JOHN’S
Tyler Harris, a 6-8 senior forward at Dix Hills (N.Y.) Half Hollow Hills West, visited St. John’s Wednesday and has several other unofficials planned.
Torrel Harris, Tyler’s father, says his son will take unofficials to UConn, Providence and Iowa the week of Aug. 21.
As for the St. John’s visit, Torrel said: “The visit was great. We met with all the coaches, including Coach [Steve] Lavin, who is a great guy. They followed Tyler the whole summer during the evaluation period so they know his strengths and weaknesses and they like the fact that he’s a very skilled player.
“I truly believe Coach Lavin is going to turn the basketball program into a major powerhouse. He has a great coaching staff.â€

Reading that article makes me wonder about the advice these kids get. Not one part of that quote did he say anything about school or education. I know it is always about basketball first but atleast make it look like you care a little about school. This is 3 schools in 3 years for Tyler now. I've personally seen him play a few times and have never been impressed but he has a nice list of schools after him so who knows.

His dad is a hell of a promoter. Tyler's got good size and three-point ability for the three, but I wonder where Lavin/Dunlap would fit him in schematically with some combination of Polee, Garrett, and Harkless. Some guys have talked about him moving over to the two on offense, but I think that'll be a real stretch at the high-major level.

I know Sledge and Tobias dominated the ball a lot but a lot of the times he was invisible out there for Hills. Even the most unskilled 6'7 guys should dominate out on Long Island. I always assumed he was a low D1 player and then saw his rankings and schools recruiting him and was shocked. Best of luck to him at St. Bens though.

As you alluded to, he was their third option on offense last year at the hs level. In terms of the rankings, the fact that he comes from a good pedigree, Tobias was a somewhat late bloomer, and it isn't a deep class realistically benefits him.

Looks skillful.
Also looks like he needs a lot more strength. But might be nice as a change of pace 4/ power forward in a running offense, maybe?

Tobias was a late bloomer..?
By that, I meant Tobias exploded up the rankings much later in his hs career (going from a borderline top 100 player as a rising junior to one firmly ensconced in the top ten, as a graduating senior), after he refined his body (particularly) and game, through his work ethic and with help from Jerry Powell.

He has, but, with the move to St.B's, I'm not sure how much he will during the season.
Kyrie (Irving) said the traffic and trains makes it a real trek to get out to Powell from North NJ. St. B's doesn't have a great weight room, but Rosh McLeod, who, as you know, has gone through NBA workouts and coached at the high-major level, should be able to give him a lot of individual attention, in terms of skill development and conditioning.

No, he's fine. He's very laid back, but friendly for a guy from our area. He was the reason why Kyrie seriously considered IU. The only coach that he rightfully has a problem with is Tom Crean, but he would never blast him in public.
He's got a very fast, high-major caliber 2012 pg, Jaylen Beckham, to come up from Kentucky.

I don't know why McCloud would have any I'll will against us.
He left St.John's because they wanted him to play inside, and he wanted to sit on the 3 point line and shoot threes.

Where Harris heard Calhoun blow smoke up his arse, I'm sure, about being a lynchpin, going to the NBA, and how St. John's would struggle with all the youth. And how the sanctions won't affect U Conn. In other words, variations of "truth."

Whether it works or not, I'm sure that Lowe and Bzdelik will try to pitch him on their respective, well, abbreviated experiences as an NBA head coach.

What about his pops? He looking to fill his pockets?
-
Two to three years from now his other son will be loaded, so daddy would have to be an idiot to even sniff around for cash.

Also, I thought his dad did well for himself. A clothing line or something? They live in Dix Hills near Norm, I believe it was said.

Torrel said it remained to be seen how head coach Steve Lavin and his staff pitch Tyler.
“It helps St. John’s but St. John’s has got to have a plan how Tyler’s going to fit in,†Torrel said. “Iowa has a plan. N.C. State has a plan. All the schools have a plan. They’ve got to sell how he fits in.
-
Another interesting note from that article...
"Another point of note is that Tesia Harris, Tyler’s older sister and a 6-foot guard, recently transferred to St. John’s from Delaware, where she averaged 12.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season. She will have to sit out a season before suiting up next year for the basketball team."

I'm kind of surprised we are still in the mix after the Sampson verbal. I'd still love to either and Dominick Pointer or Amir Garret, as I see them being better complements to Harkless and Sampson, but Harris would be able to provide good depth at a few positions.
My guess is Lavin is selling Harris and his father on the up-and-down style that lends itself to nobody really playing more than 25 mpg--the type of game that a lengthy, athletic forward could excel in.

Torrel Harris, Tyler’s father, said Louisville coach Rick Pitino officially offered the 6-8 Harris a scholarship and wants him to take an official.
“They offered him,” Torrel said. “If he goes to Louisville and he likes Louisville, they’re taking his commitment.”
Interesting. Is Pitino trying to get a good player? or is he hedging his bets about Quincy Miller (or does he know Miller's not coming)? (Does Tyler want to hang out on the bench for a year or two?)
Gotta say, if Norm was the one running this recruitment, I'd be like "time to move on from Tyler Harris."

Call it a gut instinct, but he's hedging--Drew is a wildcard. Quincy is a hell of a personality-Charles Barkley of hs ball.

In a related development, 6-8 Tyler Harris of St. Benedict’s Prep is no longer considering Louisville and is down to N.C. State, Providence, Iowa and St. John’s.
He has an official this weekend to N.C. State and heads to Providence Oct. 15. Harris already visited Iowa and still has to visit St. John’s.
“We have our top four schools, Iowa, Providence, St. John’s and N.C. State, which we are taking an official to Friday,” Torrel Harris said.
“Louisville is a school that you have to consider because Coach Pitino is a good coach but nothing was going to happen until we sat down with Coach P. By getting a commitment from Angel, who has lots of potential, and with the addition of the players at Tyler’s position, I don’t think we would further consider Louisville.”
-
So if he doesn't want to go to Louisville because of Angel Nunez why is he considering us with Maurice Harkless and JaKarr Sampson?
-
He could play PF here, and the cards have a LOT of guys in the frontcourt (Buckles, Swopshire, jennings, plus the new guys, Behanan and Price).

I don't know that, but I can see that as some idea he's been sold. But he wants to play SF. From what I've seen... well... he's not getting on the court in front of Harkless and Sampson unless he gets a lot more athletic. IMO.

Exactly my thinking.
Could he prep?
I mean... of course he COULD, but is that what he and his pops wants? I don't think you go from LI to St. Ben's to go to prep school the next year. Who knows? He has some skills. But really, the team has SFs and they need to locate some 2011-eligible post players...
-

That's the elephant in the room. For their sake, it's hopefully not too late. There's very few quality bigs that haven't been accounted for.

Nobody is redshirting.

I guess that is the reason the staff is targeting God's Gift. I'm not sure what has happened with Johnson. Is he having eligibility issues?
Maybe, folk expect Tyler Harris to grow a few more inches before it's all said and done.
-
Would God's Gift and Pelle suffice?
Exactly.... How did I forget to mention Pelle (a kid who I really want) in my last post? ???

Would God's Gift and Pelle suffice?
Absolutely, Pelle would. Of the recent St. John's guys, he's probably closest to a more athletic Burrell with similar patterns of production. He's got a lot of upside and the ability to be an impact freshman. If he comes here, hopefully the staff can make him more fundamentally sound on offense and, well, encourage him to play to his potential more consistently.
I've never seen God's Gift Achiuwa play, so I'm not sure what he brings to the court.
-
Can't just have 2 bigs, though. Unless you're Marquette and routinely play NO big men.
-
Well have we had a true 5 outside of Coker the last 4 years? I hear people say a 'Big' and I think of a legit 5. If guys like Burrell and Evans are also considered bigs even though in my mind they are 4's then OK we can have a couple of other options. Pelle and GG with Sampson and Mo dabbling at the 4 I think is enough. But who knows there might be something up the staff sleeve but it doesn't seem like many legit 5's on their radar.
GG seems like a space eater from what we've read. But sadly we don't have any video.
-
I'm thinking of 4s and 5s when I say bigs. Sampson might pack some weight on and play the 4 at times, especially in an uptempo offense, but I can't see Harkless doing that (and I thought it was a beef Nate Blue had with one school, wanting him to play down low? Or maybe I'm thinking of another recruit, like Tyler and his dad).
If you only have 2 big men and a part-timer, what about foul trouble, injury...?
-

Yeah it seems thin on paper but maybe Lavin's offensive and defensive sets aren't builty for much low post players. Zone might mean less foul trouble. I don't know honestly but what I do see is not many true legit 5's. I viewed Burrell and Evans as 4's that we have used at the 5 the last 3 years. God seems like he's along that line. Pelle and Sampson need to add some bulk.

Tyler Harris, the younger brother of Tobias Harris, will reclassify to the Class of 2012 and enroll in prep school after graduation. Harris and his brother both started elementary school a year early, according to their father, Torrel.
“At this point in Tyler’s career, I think he will benefit from regaining the year he missed in order to mature mentally and physically,” Torrel wrote in an email. “We have decided as a family that after graduation from high school at Half Hollow Hills High School West he will enroll as a post grad at an undecided prep school, re-classifying as a graduate of his actual class, 2012.”
Tyler holds offers from UConn, Duquesne, Tennessee, Hofstra, Delaware and Fordham, according to his father.
-
Is Uconn the new SJU. Not exactly impressive company on that list.
If you think about it, and guys like Calhoun and Boeheim retire what's going to get kids to go to college in the middle nowhere?
Syracuse is already grooming Mike Hopkins to be Boeheim's replacement. That never works out well.

Tyler holds offers from UConn, Duquesne, Tennessee, Hofstra, Delaware and Fordham, according to his father.
This an old article. Have Tyler and his father actually decided to reclassify? I haven't heard any news about this actually taking place.
I think you may wanna move this back to 2011.
-
Is Uconn the new SJU. Not exactly impressive company on that list.
If you think about it, and guys like Calhoun and Boeheim retire what's going to get kids to go to college in the middle nowhere?
Syracuse is already grooming Mike Hopkins to be Boeheim's replacement. That never works out well.
A very old article, Poison. I don't know why that particular article was dugged up. Harris had better schools then those listed recently targeting him.
He's actually down to St. John's, NC State and Providence.

Here is an article from yesterday, per Projo.com (Providence-based site)....
The Friars are clearly looking for a point man and also a scoring wing. The top hope on the wing is Tyler Harris, the 6-7 forward from Dix Hills, N.Y. who visited with Boatright last week. Harris' father, Torrell Harris, said a few days ago that his son will announce his school on November 5 and is down to PC, North Carolina State, St. John's and Iowa. Harris will visit SJU a few days before his announcement and there is growing speculation that he may want to join what is one of the best classes of recruits for 2011 at St. John's. We'll see.

I would never discourage a top 100 player from coming here but with all the higher ranked wings we are bringing in its surprising he's still considering us. I know that Lavin has a plan for him and will sell that to him and his father on their visit so I wouldn't be surprised to see him commit here. It can't hurt to have a bunch of talented wings who are long and tall and capable of playing multiple positions but I'm just surprised to see him visiting but thats Lavin for you.

I'm also shocked that we're still in for Harris. I figured he would've took us off his list after Pointer committed. Not to mention, he's taking an official visit here, as well.
I, remember hearing he could grow a couple of inches before it's all said and done. I'm not sure there is any merit to that scenario, but it's been floated out there.
Maybe, he grows to 6'10" and be a threat in the post and on the perimeter. We might be able to bring him along slowly, considering there will be other quality players on the roster.
Never know.... He could turn out to be a quality 3-4 year player.
-
along the lines of reclassifying...do you think there is any chance you sell this kid on coming and being a redshirt for a year since he is a year younger rather than going to prep school. it would allow him to develop and practice with the core group of incomming frosh but also be a body that stays after this huge class moves on
-
Can Tyler play inside? Because that would make him a valuable addition.
-
He's not coming here.
-
He's not coming here.
Rightly so, he should go somewhere where he will get time

I have heard Providence fro ma few people but who knows..!!
-
I've heard Providence too, from some of the recruiting bloggers.
-
PC wouldn't be a bad look for him. He could be Gomes-esque there.
-
Tyler Harris is down to three schools,
The 6-foot-8 wing from Long Island and Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep will not visit St. John’s this weekend as originally scheduled and is now down to N.C. State, Iowa and Providence.
“Tyler’s official visit to St. John’s is cancelled,” Torrel Harris said by text. He will announce Nov. 5.
Harris declined further comment.

Seems like a good decisions by him. He seems to be very much a wing player and we have three very good SFs already with Garret still considering us.
-
I dont think Garret is coming here. I hope we just focus on Pele and Gods gift or that JUCO big and save another scholi for 2012

And why do you think he's not?

I hope he comes. But I could understand why he wouldn't. We just signed 3 top players who play the same position. We also signed 2 top players who play his secondary posit on. Again I hope he comes, hope he starts all 4 years, hope he is a lottery pick, but I can understand why he wouldn't. If Lavin got him to it would be beyond amazing!
-
Before Lavin, it was almost impossible for SJU to get more than one stud at the same position.
Lavin is building a Final Four team now.
And for that, you need more than one stud at SF.
-
tyler probably isnt coming where as amir would fit perfectly as lavin told him because they dont just play the 3 some play 4 others play 2 dom pointer can even play the 1 and he would fit better cus amir is dirty lol
-
And for that, you need more than one stud at SF.
That's a tad bit ridiculous to claim when Duke didn't even have a backup SF and Butler's was Avery Jukes, serviceable yes, but not a stud.
As it relates to STJ of course the point is moot as there seem to be 2-3 studs who can play SF already on board.

**The Friars remain in contention to land New York high schooler Tyler Harris. The 6-8 forward announced he's dropped St. John's from consideration and is now down to PC, Iowa and North Carolina State. He will announce his school on Nov. 5.
Nothing that wasn't expected.
Also a good LOL from our very own forum member Poison in the comments section.
Harris didn't drop SJU, they dropped him. Why? Dom Pointer, Jakar Sampson and Maurice Harkless would be why. Tyler Harris would be in charge of the Gatorade if he went to SJU.
Way to stick it to New England.

Hahaha times have really changed. I used to get excited when we would get a JUCO guy rated a 90 on espn.com, and now we are like pshh a 95 4 or 3 star rated SF no thanks.

Providence has owned is for 10 years.
Those days, finally, are over.
Hopefully the days of Cuse, Nova and WV owning us as well are also over.
-
He is announcing his decision tomorrow.
-
I've heard Providence a lot. Anyone know anything?
-
Providence has owned is for 10 years.
1-10 in the last 9 years. It's odd really.
-
He's gonna go to North Carolina State
-
If he's going to NC State, the other schools should keep calling, 'cause Sidney Lowe's on the hot seat.

NC State. Why? Should have went to Providence. I think we see him at Hofstra in a few years

“I will be attending N.C. State for my freshman year,” said Harris, who lives in Dix Hills, Long Island.

Haha
Now that's funny!
-
Great choice with their two starting forwards(Lesile & Smith) leaving to the NBA after this season I can see him getting a lot of PT in freshman season & a lot more in his sophomore season
-
Good luck to him.
-
Yankcranker, look at the roster of the top 3 teams in all of the top conferences.
I think you'll see that in most cases there is more than top 100 player at a single position.
Syracuse has Kris Joseph, but the program is so strong, they had no trouble also bringing in Wes Johnson and Mookie Jones.

That's right. That's great. Who cares. You said to win a national title you had to have to studs at SF. I was just pointing out you didn't have to back to far to prove that comment utter nonsense. Stay on topic.

Transferring from NC St.
-
not shocking
-
So Tyler transferring, Tesia transferred and Tobias would have transferred had he not been a one-and-done talent (Bruce Pearl firing). Dad is 0 for 3 in making decisions for his kids. Maybe he should let someone else advise the little brother.
-
“@SteveHartnett92: http://t.co/mOv85FJ1 (http://t.co/mOv85FJ1) can report that NC State transfer Tyler Harris is currently visiting the Providence campus.”
Previously at Temple and UAB.

Going to Providence
-
Didn't he want to come to St. John's last year and we didn't have enough room for him?

I think we had too many forwards coming in. Not a huge fan of his game anyway.
