Title: April Live Period - (4/25-4/27)
Post by: jmattera83 on April 14, 2014, 12:48:39 PM
It's almost that time again.

NIKE EYBL Session 1 - (Sacramento, CA)
UA Pitt Jam Fest - (Pitt, PA)

I'm assuming there's another few elsewhere as well.

Team SCAN (Diallo), Lightning (Govan), and NJ Playaz (Briscoe) will all be out in CA that weekend.
The City (D.Mitchell) will be in Pitt with UA.

I will update this if I hear anything further.

Lot of anger among coaches that they reduced the April Evaluation weekends from 2 to 1 this year.

Believe it or not I think it was just because of where Easter fell on the calendar this year.  Next weekend is Easter nullifying it as a recruiting weekend.

Jeff Borzello does a good breakdown of both the April and July Evaluation periods:

I wager that this year we hear about it every time someone on the staff leaves their living room to watch a recruit.

No restrictions anymore on number of coaches on the road at one time.

All 4 (HC and 3 assistants) can be on the road.

He wasn't on the road for April Live Period last year.  He was at home in SoHo.  We lost out on Chris McCullough and Isiah Whitehead because we didn't recruit them hard enough.

Glad he's out and about this year.

False.  That is not why we lost them.  If you think for a moment that because Coach was not at an AAU game is why McCullough and Whitehead did not come to SJU you are simply wrong.  Whitehead was not a target at that point.  And by the way go check Willard's travel records during April, yet he landed him?  How?  The dispute over Whitehead has more to do with why SJU did not make him a bigger target last Spring.  That is a legit question  But Lavin is not lazy, period.

Jim Boeheim took off an entire July and April and still landed kids.  Fran Dunphy did everything but move in with Rysheed's family and he did not land him.

Boeheim can do that. Plus, he's on national TV, because he's a coach who can help us win a gold medal.

That kind of publicity helps a coach recruit. Look at the players he's landed since taking on that job. I'd love to see us finally get them next year, but who knows what kind of team they'll have next year? Still, you can bet that Boeheim will have a new and capable point guard, and a swingman. Will we replace what we've lost? Jakarr? It doesn't look like we'll come close to doing that.

What has Lavin been doing? Recruiting a kid who chose Loyola Chicago over us? That scenario sounds eerily familiar. Why did he wait so long before actively recruiting anyone? Seems like he's scrambling for whatever's left. Also, familiar.

Don't give me that nonsense that Boeheim can do it but Lavin can't.

That has nothing to do with it, it is a complete copout.  Coaches approach things differently and different times need to do different things.

You can't argue kids like to see love but when it involves a big name coach they don't care.  Bill Self is all over the place but Boeheim isn't.  So what?

You simply don't  understand and see certain things happen and then draw ridiculous conclusions based on this and assert these as facts.

I have basketball people that tell me differently.  The proper legwork was not put in with either prospect.  Syracuse was ALL OVER McCullough and St John's had a chance to take total control of Whitehead's recruitment as Cuse and Louisville started moving out of the picture.  I have very good sources who tell me both.

As for Boeheim, I'm guessing you're talking about his time with Team USA as to why he took off a July recruiting period.  He was busy coaching for his country and as Poison mentioned, there is extremely positive ramifications with recruits that come with that.  Lavin decided to skip April live period last year so he could hang in SoHo.

I'm not doubting what Theo heard or Fordham's perspective, but when reading this board around the time of Whitehead's commitment, Dave, KOB and a number of other posters said that he was ours but for Willard's deal with the devil.  Not sure what the deal with Chris was.  I know people said he was a SJU lock at one point, but can you ever fault a kid for choosing Cuse over St. John's?  So who knows what the motivating factor was.

Don't think a full court press on a kid always works though.  By all accounts, Cooley was all over Sampson and Sanchez and he lost both to us.

I still think the team is better next season than it was this season, in both talent and record..

I'm done getting worked up about something 2-3 years down the line.. Life is too short.

I'm not trying to get under your skin, but truthfully, how is the team better at this point?   We haven't added anyone aside from ADR, but we  lost a very good talent in Jakarr and a quality player in Sanchez.

I think the improvement of Jordan, Harrison,Branch, Greene, Pointer, Obekpa..with additions of ADR, Jones, Felix hopefully Thomas, and maybe others...will make us a better team than...

Frosh Jordan, Harrison, Sampson, Sanchez, etc......., etc..

People assume the same player from last season is coming back.  I think our guys will all improve and help make the team better...Plus, last season has left a sour taste in players mouths.  I think they really feel there is unfinished business with this group...

See, you assume, everything remains status quo... Doesn't work like that..

With 31 regular season games plus at least  one in BET that would be a 22-10 record at best and if some wins are in BET more games which means worst than 22-10 which in a weakened BE means the NIT again if they will have us after last seasons fiasco.

The team from 2012-2013 that returned 95% of their players and scoring BARELY made an improvement this past season.  I have no reason to trust that those same players, minus our top 2 rebounders and adding a couple bargain basement/leftover recruits will be better than last years team.  I want to see them prove me wrong, but they made virtually no improvement from 2012-2013 to this past season as a group, so they have lost all credibility.

They also did a LOT of talking coming into this past year and how they had a chip on their shoulder, they had to have a big year and make the tournament, etc.  They came out, laid an egg, and then didn't compete hard for the bulk of the 2nd half vs. Providence and didn't play hard at all for the bulk of the Robert Morris game. Sorry, but I'm not buying into ANY of their "unfinished business" or "hammer to rock" nonsense anymore.

Sorry, but I'm not buying into ANY of their "unfinished business" or "hammer to rock" nonsense anymore.

"unfinished business", like "hammer to rock" has nothing to do with actual basketball. It's just their Twitter campaign. Nothing more.

Again, I'm just saying that next years team will be better than this season.

Season will not end with a 1st round NIT loss.   My prediction only.  I can understand folks not buying it.

Friendly wager anyone?

In this thread you said the team will be better in talent and in record.   Your words.
And as pessimistic as anyone might be, I hope no one on here would bet against the team.

I stand by my words..  We will be better.... I promise you that there are posters that deep down root for the team to lose because it makes them more relevant on this site..  Of this also, I have no doubt.

Feel free to post his stats and how far WCC went.
