One of the most important games in recent memory and that sucks lol

Johnnies a 7 point favorite

Geez. How bad is Georgetown?

About 3 points better than Iona.
-
Challenge is 2 "quality" bigs. Must avoid getting killed on the boards, i.e., DePaul, and avoid early foul trouble defending.
-
This is a game where SJU should be out and running from the tip. G'town should have no answer to an up tempo pace.
-
We Are SJU making probably his only appearance of the year. I am calling a win 78-72.
-
Forgive me if I have zero interest in the nostalgia of Ewing vs Mullin. I also have zero interest right now in the nostalgia of Mullin coaching SJU, that was for 3 years ago.
Let's get this going, now. Start winning period, like now.

Amen, I'm done being nostalgic, produce. With that being said I forsee Jamorko Pickens being a real thorn in our sides tonight, he's a big time mismatch. I'm hoping that this team meeting was as therapeutic as possible and that any selfishness has been eliminated from the team psyche. I want to see a concerted effort on the glass and defensive side of the ball. I'd like to see Yakwe as the first big off the bench tonight, Amar only used when you have to protect Tariq. Limit Govan as much as possible, Marv is actually a good matchup for Derrickson. Bash has been our best player for a month, as long as he stays consistent and Shamorie/Justin bring their A games we go home happy tonight.
-
This game is going to come down to offensive rebounds and turnovers. If we turn them over and limit them on the glass we win by double digits. If we do neither of those things we lose by double digits
-

Like you don't get all teary eyed thinking off the Glory Days of Jeff Ruland and Steve Burtt sr? Yeah probably not

Georgetown actually play an uptemp pace themselves. Problem is they're prone to turn over the ball, which should feed into what we do well as a team.... Creating steals.

Concur.

He typically hangs out on the perimeter. If he's hitting from outside, then he can be a problem. So far, during this early part of this conference season, he hasn't been much of a threat and he's prone to turn over the ball.
The key is 1) Govan and 2) Derrickson, in that particular order. Go zone, and use our length, anticipation and quickness to garner deflections and steals. Use a 2-3 and 1-2-2, and befuddle 'em all night. Go man here and there, but I'd mainly play those two zones tonight.

I hate Georgetown. Let’s win

FYI, Ahmed was almost a scratch today, under weather a bit.

FYI, Ahmed was almost a scratch today, under weather a bit.
Hope it's not a sprained sinus condition he may be out for a month or two.
-
Why take out Yakwe with 2 fouls?
-
We need shooting, so AA comes in. Hahaha
-
A couple times already Simon has been too unselfish and passed up a layup. Either that or hes not confident
-

Good call on the turnovers Dink. Damn they're beyond careless with the ball.
-
With all their turnivers, if we could shoot, we would ne up ten points.

I've seen 'em play several times and I knew they'd turn it over like crazy.
-
Clark and Simon are talented, gotta take it to the hoop hard.

Trimble made a shot! Remember this moment in time.

Clark needs to be more aggressive

Keeping a bad team in it

He must've heard you.
-
I've now seen Ponds on three occasion in this half drive the lane and throw careless passes, two of which he could've taken himself for a layup. Gotta clean that crap up.
-

Thinks he is in Rucker
-
Owens 0 rebounds
-
Leave Trimble in, let's see what we got with him.
-
Where's the team that played at Seton Hall and Creighton? This would be a blowout by now, if this was the team from those particular games. This is the team we saw versus Providence and DePaul.
This is garbage basketball.
-
Sloppy snoozer. Thankfully GT turns the ball over every two possessions seemingly.

I noticed those passes. Horrible and lackadaisical.

2 horrible teams

Exactly what the halftime crew just said. Hot garbage.
-
I'd say this game is setting the game of basketball back 33 years but pathetically the quality of basketball 33 years ago can't be worse than it is in this one
-
One positive, if they sat Bashir & they almost did with flu like symptoms, Amar would have gotten more time.
-
Out rebounded again significantly
-
Out rebounded again significantly
They don't ever block out.
-
yup, rebounding is scary bad
-
Simon is a mediocre finisher. IMO, he makes it too difficult.

He's like that crazy athletic kid in gym class that sucks at basketball
-
Simon is a mediocre finisher.
He's like that crazy athletic kid in gym class that sucks at basketball
Haha! I've seen that a time or two.
By the way, why not zone Georgetown?
-
Gotta make those chippies!!!
-
Simon did it again. Those finishes aren't difficult, but he makes 'em difficult.
-
They have no identity. It's like they keep other teams in games and don't know how to play with a lead. Odd.
-
Owens still, 0 rebounds
-
IMO, this team look like they're going through the motions. No enthusiasm or sense of urgency. Something seems off.
Maybe, it's just me.
-
Ponds again dribbling like this is a Rucker game
-
Ponds again dribbling like this is a Rucker game
Careless.
-
We are not even close to being good.
-
By the way, why not zone Georgetown?
We tried on one possession, they got an open shot and basket. There is nothing that leads to easier shots than a team playing zone when they have absolutely no clue how to play one
-
Yakwe now taking 3s
-
By the way, why not zone Georgetown?

I may have missed that possession. That's another problem.... They don't know how to teach a proper zone.
Why is Yakwe shooting from near the 3-point line? He's caught the green light fever, too.
-
Haha! The commentator said, "This game is setting basketball back 30 years."
-
Kassoum Yakwe just took a long 2 with 18 seconds left on the shot clock. Is this real life
-
It's a shame someone has to actually win this game
-
We can't get better shots then yakwe and Owens jacking up 19 footers?
-
Once again, another shot that didn't have to be so difficult. Ponds didn't have to make that layup so difficult. You don't get more points for shot of difficulty.
-
What's with Simon and Ponds turning easy layups into high degree of difficulty shots. Just finish.
-
Once again, another shot that didn't have to be so difficult. Ponds didn't have to make that layup so difficult. You don't get more points for shot of difficulty.
Ha! Exactly.
-
If a team meeting led to this type of effort the staff should consider keeping these kids as far away from each other as possible until gametime
-
I miss Durand Johnson, Ron Mvouika, Christian Jones & Felix Balamou
-
Please let the clock run
-
Ponds limping. He wants out too. Can't blame him
-
Worst player on the court, Clark or Govan?
-
this is a bad offensive team
-
Please let the clock run
Ha! I was just saying the same thing to myself. I wanna win every, single game, but really love beating Georgetown. But, I'm now saying, please put the fans (of both teams) out of their misery and let this game end ASAP.
-
Worst player on the court, Clark or Govan?
All 10.
-
Mullin giving the "we're fine" speech during that media timeout might be the most pathetic part of this game. If there was ever a time to rip into your guys that was it and he did the exact opposite
-
There's still a bunch of time left in this game, but I have no confidence whatsoever we're gonna pull it out. Please, prove me wrong.
-
Mullin giving the "we're fine" speech during that media timeout might be the most pathetic part of this game. If there was ever a time to rip into your guys that was it and he did the exact opposite

They need a real in-game coach. That huddle they just showed with Mullin playing cheerleader isn't going to cut it. Those assts are awfully quiet. Fledglings.
-

Good God that was horrendous
-
Why even try that alley oop pass? Who was he throwing it too? Paul Bunyon?
-
Owens still, 0 rebounds
Hard to get rebounds when you're out of position from trying to block every single shot
-
Val Ackerman just expelled both teams.
-

The 10th row
-
Looks like Ponds went to the locker room after limping off
-
I'm getting flashbacks of Norm Roberts. This has the exact look of one of our games when he was coaching.
-
Looks like Ponds went to the locker room after limping off
I was wondering why he wasn't on the court.
-
BE Commissioner Val Ackerman just expelled both teams.
-
Looks like Ponds went to the locker room after limping off
Another pussy
-
And the BOO BIRDS are out at MSG. What a dumpster fire.
-
Simon got away with one there.
-
We run a horrible break
-
Feed Trimble. He's got the hot hand tonight.
-
Give it to Trimble. LOL
-
Get it to Trimble
-
Nevermind, Ponds on the bench and coming back in
-
No one can hit a layup. That's what's killing us. No one should be blocking shots in practice. These players have become paranoid around the basket.
-
Nevermind, Ponds on the bench and coming back in
That's good to hear. Although, he's been too nonchalant for my taste most of this season.
-
I still like Simon, but I can see why he couldn't get any burn at Arizona.
Still a bunch of time remaining, but this game has the feel that it's probably over.
-
Can’t wait to hear the Mullin lovers after this game.
-
But seriously how did this team win 7 BE games last year and start 10-2 this year
-
Eke out a win v a bad team or another two hour team meeting?
-
But seriously how did this team win 7 BE games last year and start 10-2 this year
That's the scary part, as it looks like they're regressing.
-
Keep Anton Goff's email box full...
goffa@stohns.edu
-
But seriously how did this team win 7 BE games last year and start 10-2 this year
By beating 10 mediocre-poor teams
-
Hard to imagine opening with 3 home games including the projected 2 worst teams in the conference and on the verge of being 0-3 and 0-5 overall in the conference in year 3.
I am flabbergasted at how poor this program looks right now.
-
GT very capable of blowing this one.

Yup
-
An extremely, crucial possession coming after this TV timeout.
-
and we play #1 nova next.....wow
-
We win this game
-
We win this game
I'd be elated if that happen (even more, considering it's Georgetown), but this team is going nowhere fast. Mullin cans a couple of assistant coaches after the season or he needs to leave himself.
-
I knew they were gonna go to Govan. Owens poor closeout and even dumber foul.
-
I think this game may be over now.
-
simons worst game this season
-
Nobody even knows who is taking the ball out of bounds
-
Once again, Simon made the layup attempt too difficult. A simpler attempt and he potentially has an "And 1."
-
Just go up strong! All this fancy shit isn't warranted.
-
Announcer gave us the whammy.
-
They had the ball there too. Just secure it.
-
Simon made the layup, but he also made it a more difficult attempt.
-
Going to end up with 5 more minutes of this crap
-
Going to end up with 5 more minutes of this crap
LOL
-
Going to end up with 5 more minutes of this crap
Haha! To beat those bums.... I'll take it. Hopefully, we can win in regulation. I feel a G'town turnover here.
-

Guess not. Owens was there. Just a big shot by Govan. We shouldn't have been in this situation, but oh well!
-
Keep it away from Govan or Derrickson. Their bigs are their best FT shooters.
-
Simon and Ponds in no man's land on the press
-
Not much to say
-
we may go 0-fer this season. just disgusting
-
You just knew how this would end once Govan hit the trey. At least, I knew how it was gonna end.
Ponds need to go up with the shot and stop looking for the foul. I said, last game was the last one I'd watch for this season. I wanted to see us beat the Hoyas. Well, tonight's game will be the last one I watch this season.
-
Have no fear the easy part of the schedule is over. We will win many more games during the hard part of the schedule.
-
Well they can only go up from here.
-
Not much to say
Hey someone has to finish last. Why not us?
-
we may go 0-fer this season. just disgusting
I doubt it. We'll end up winning probably 3 or 4 games. There will be a game where we'll play light's out or the opposition lays down. Otherwise, this season is over, and we probably won't be in the NIT, either. Oh, well....
-
Just remember, no bitching. Platitudes, platitudes!
-

Agreed, he has to get that shot off cleanly.
-
Not much to say
Hey someone has to finish last. Why not us?
Agreed. We get first pick in the draft and Baldi is happy. Win-win!
-
Well they can only go up from here.
In what decade?
-
We don’t defend another loss!!
-
Mullin please quit
-
this team sucks....too many me first players.....team only meeting for what to play like dogshit for 36 min....joke of a team...glad the boo birds were out at the garden
-
Wonder if Mullin will hit us with the ole "this team will gel in February" line from the book of Lavs
-
Just a deflating season. Mullins 3rd year and we re going to start a the BE 0and 5. This pains me to write. I miss the Lavin years.
-
Well they can only go up from here.
In what decade?
Long after our time on this Earth.
-
Mullin please quit
+1
I was about to post how I think he should step down at the end of the season. Still a ton of games left, but we're probably gonna finish anywhere between 9th-10th place. We seem to be regressing.
-
Wonder if Mullin will hit us with the ole "this team will gel in February" line from the book of Lavs
We can only hope
-
That Govan shot basically put a dagger in the season. Bought tickets a while ago for the Nova game. Not even interested in going anymore....
-
Wonder if Mullin will hit us with the ole "this team will gel in February" line from the book of Lavs
The book of lavs! LMFAO
-
I don't know how Mullin spins this disaster. They are just bad.
It's hard to comprehend how poorly this team is playing.
-
I'm having an extra long team meeting at my house.....
Anyone in ?
-
We need a Lavance Fields type PG. A player who plays with the thing 4 feet above his ass. The experiment is over. It’s time Goff drives up I95 to Kingston.
-
Facts are facts. Mullin was selfish to take job and too arrogant to to realize that he would not succeed just going through motions and that’s what he is doing... he does not recruit, coach or understand college game. He has to go ASAP.
-

Which should have been the hire in the first place or his brother. Mullin sycophants probably want Walter Berry up next.
-
and we play #1 nova next.....wow
105-58
The at #10 Xavier 94-51
0-7
-
Mullin is just a terrible coach. This team plays like a group at the Y. If Mullin had any pride he donate his pay check back to the school
-

He backdoor'ed his way into the job. He is lethargic on the recruiting trail, and things we're seeing on the court now were some of the same stuff I noticed in his first season. We have a bit more talent now, but we don't have Duke, Kentucky, Kansas or Arizona talent, so his lack of nuances or discipline gets exposed against a team with the slightest of pulse.
Our defense initially looked better than previous years, but that seems to be fool's gold now. Georgetown is garbage or they would've likely rolled up 80+ points tonight, too. Don't even get me started on the offensive end. Sandlot/street ball. This is starting to have the look of Norm Roberts.
-
If we finish 2-16 or 1-17 the school will be forced to make changes.
-
I would not be surprised if J'Raan Brooks walks away from his verbal committ
-
Tonight was arguably the worst basketball SJU has played in the last 2 decades...and that is saying a lot because we've been pretty bad for like 15 of those years.
-
We played terribly cause team has quit. This is not about wins and loses anymore. It’s about accountability and leadership. I have mentioned this a few times. What is going on with Lovett, is more than on the court. I truly believe the players see the selfishness on both coaches part and his part and they have fed off it. The 10-2 start was not a mirage, it’s that team sees a weak link and when they have relied on staff, the staff quit.
-
Trimble 3-4 from 3, rest of team 1-16. What happened to the good shooting team we were supposed to have and yet Mullin green lights everyone from 3. ::)
-
I would not be surprised if J'Raan Brooks walks away from his verbal committ
I hope he sticks around, as I really like his game. But, if this season continues down this road, then I expect him to back out. Not to mention, I believe he and his mom has #sjubb hashtagged on their Twitter feeds. So, they have been witnessing a meltdown of fans, so I wouldn't doubt they start to have reservations.
-
If we finish 2-16 or 1-17 the school will be forced to make changes.
You know what's funny I thought he was safe for this year regardless of how they finish both because of his name and the overall notion that the administration is going to give him some space in this rebuild. But seriously they are staring 0-7 in the face and a last place finish in the BE in year 3 after doing nothing in your first two years, I don't know how SJU could sell a year 4 with him to the fan base.

You may have a point here.
I said somewhere in the game feed that it seemed like the team is going through the motions. No energy or sense of urgency. As, you stated.... Maybe, they're quitting. Time will tell.

One thing for sure is Shamorie Ponds is a long way from being an elite guard. That is back to back games he has missed critical free throws and his 3pt shooting has been poor for someone who is supposed to be an all league caliber guard.

They ain't buyin what the coaches are selling.
-
Team needs to suit up Foad and we are sju they'll run through a brick wall for Mullin.
-
I'll tell you this I have tickets to the Villanova game, taking my son and meeting my friend and his kids on Saturday.
Outside of that I am not wasting my time with this team the rest of this year unless something drastic happens. Meaning not making it a point to watch the games or be around to watch or go to the games.
-
This is tougher than Mullins first year. We didn’t expect anything then. Year 3 a total bust, and we already played the 2 worst teams at home. It’s getting harder to be a fan and that’s saying a lot considering the last 15 years.
-
Mo’s hire had to do with money. Gempshaw knew he would bring eyes back to program without having to market. The big factor would be getting back donations from alums who had no interest. It’s been 26 years since Louie retired. It has never been about winning basketball.

Definitely, but the staff does not run any sets for him or any sets in general really. It's incredibly tough to be an elite player when you have to create all of your own shots off the dribble. Even a below average coach would find a way to run him off screens or something
-
My prediction for rest of season: 13 league games left. I believe they win 4 or 5 of them. They also win 1 game in BE. They give Mullin one more year since he's Mullin. Hopefully he makes staff changes but who the hell knows. Not saying I like it (because I don't) but this is how I think it plays out.
-
Can honestly say, have not missed a game in years, and after this nova game, which I have tickets for, will be my last for season.
-

We'll hopefully they invested those donations right over the last 2-3 years, because they are going to start drying up quickly.
Maybe if we focus all our money on academics, we'll move the needle on our US News ranking
-
Can honestly say, have not missed a game in years, and after this nova game, which I have tickets for, will be my last for season.
Lol. The drama
-
I'm e mailing the A D tomorrow. I suggest everyone who is unhappy with the program do the same.

Dead on. Lavin didn't kiss the rings of the elite alumni or local media. Ultimately, it bit him in the ass.

He definitely reads them... and responds, even if an acknowledgement.

Hey man, u got it good. Rider, Fairfield, Siena. Sometimes we back the right horse.

You a St. John's fan or not?
-
Yes. And former player at school for different sport. Being a fan is only reason why I post. If I wasn’t, they would be as irrelevant to me as rest of country
-
Absolutely hilarious that we finally get some clarity about Marcus' return now that we're 0-5 in conference.

So you're not a fan anymore is what you're saying?
-
When did I say that? I said I’m not going to anymore games. Does not mean I’m not a fan. Giants were 2-14 and last game of year they had half empty house. Does that mean season ticket holders who didn’t go to game are not fans anymore? There are many ways of being a fan, but got to cut loses for season and watch from house.

Ok.I misunderstood. My bad.

Good by the time Lovett plays again there will be about 200 fans at Carnesecca and nobody is going to care.

I'm e mailing the A D tomorrow. I suggest everyone who is unhappy with the program do the same.
He definitely reads them... and responds, even if an acknowledgement.
He is a nice guy. He assured me we would win tonight.

The "we're right there" quotes by 3 different people is infuriating because we shouldn't be "right there" at home vs Georgetown, or even DePaul and Providence. We should be head and shoulders above them at home. If you want to hang your hat on being "right there" at SHU and at Creighton that's fine as long as you are taking care of business elsewhere. Shows how far away this program currently is because we are still just striving for mediocrity
-
Sat right behind Gtown bench. Herb Williams and Allan Houston were in my way a little bit but had nice view. Some random thoughts.
-Other than Ponds and or Simon driving the ball or Clark wide open with his feet set, what is a good shot for us?
-Refs sucked
-Feel bad for Ponds, he played really hard. Best defense he has played in 2 years. Fun to watch and threw some nice passes his teammates weren't ready for. Seemed to give up on those long threes.
-Herb and Houston look exactly the same. Wennington and Ewing have aged poorly.

The two big things I noticed.
I am a big Mullin fan. Ewing commands the huddle way more in his first season then Mullin has in 3. In fact at one point after watching Ewing during a TO I looked down to ST John's bench and Mullin wasn't even in the huddle Looked like they boxed him out. Bad optics.
St John's has terrible cheerleaders!!!

Yeah you are 0-4 and you are playing the team that was picked to finish next to last in the BE at home and you are concerned about your inability to get a stop late so you may have a chance to win the game??? How about beating the SNOT out of them from start to finish because you are so pissed off that you are 0-4 instead of essentially trailing most of the second half from 5-8 points before Georgetown nearly handed you the game and you still lost.

Trimble 3-4 from 3, rest of team 1-16. What happened to the good shooting team we were supposed to have and yet Mullin green lights everyone from 3. ::)
One thing for sure is Shamorie Ponds is a long way from being an elite guard. That is back to back games he has missed critical free throws and his 3pt shooting has been poor for someone who is supposed to be an all league caliber guard.
Besides the missed FT I thought he played well. He can't shoot but his drives to the basket are our best offense.

Damn, he was the only reason we had a shot the last 5 minutes of that game. And he should have been at the ft line with a chance to tie it.

Some fans are also striving for mediocrity. Read some of the posts (particularly, on Redmen).
I'm telling myself, "No way it can happen," and I still don't think it'll happen, but we could end up being in last place or 9th place at the end of the season.
Lack of depth is certainly a problem, but the staff rested on their laurels when this could've been rectified. If anyone watches the game, they'll also know this is more than a lack of depth issue.

I was actually surprised by how much more Ewing is involved. But again he was an NBA assistant for years.

I wanted to win. Spent plenty of money. We are better off losing. Not mad even the slightest. The kids played hard. Need a new start

This is where Lovett is killing us. We have no reliable outside shooter besides Clark and not sure you want your 4 guy to be your only shooter.

I don't think anything other than 9th or 10th in the league is even on the table at this point. If we catch every single break from now until the end of the season we will still finish no better than 5-13. We've played the 3 worst teams in the league aside from us at home and lost all 3

Neither. Feel bad for Mullin and my seat was at end of row so hard to get up, only had 2 beers.
What game would you bet your savings we win? Not saying we won't win 2 or 3. Just saying there is not a game I would feel overly confident about.

And the BOO BIRDS are out at MSG. What a dumpster fire.
i noticed that as well. It is rare to hear boos from SJ fans since they rarely get excited enough to cheer, shows you how bad we were playing and how much unrest is building.

saw on twitter there is some tension with Lovett and other players....not sure how credible the source was......i cant believe i spent money to go to Georgetown game in DC to sit front row....well at least if i have to boo the players and mullin they will hear me.

I must say it was pretty funny in the 1st half when Amar got the ball and the crowd let out a collective groan.

Still don’t understand why no one in these pressers asks if he has put an APB out on Ponds’ jumper.

I was a kid of the 80's.
Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Bernard King, Heather Thomas(Way better than Locklear), Kathy Ireland, Christie Brinkley, Superfly Snuka, Miami Vice, The Police, Bruce and Run DMC.
I am loyal to my favorites. If any one of them were coaching ST John's I would want them to succeed.
One more observation. Marcus was wearing an ugly shirt. If he is not going to play anymore he needs top dress better.

Truth is DePaul and G-Town was our most winnable games, both being picked 9th & 10th in the league and bother being in our house. These 2 were our best chances at W's. Sorry, but i could see us going 0 for.

I can't hate on the kid when he plays within his abilities. He has stopped dribbling the ball completely inside the FT line and he can cover the absurd distance with his long legs, long arms, and hops. He kind of reminds me of the Greek Freak.

Although not a complete solution to the depth problem, having Sid Wilson as a starter or at least first off the bench would have really helped.

Although not a complete solution to the depth problem, having Sid Wilson as a starter or at least first off the bench would have really helped.
He didn't want to be here to begin with, the recruitment was a waste and whether it happened in the summer or later this year it was inevitable he was leaving. That is 100% on the staff. They recruited him knowing he personally did not want to be in NYC.
They recruited Zach Brown and passed on Hasahn French. 100% on them. They get paid to make these decisions, they made them. Their bed to sleep in not mine.
Again Chris says this is going to turn, I'll sit an wait. But this is 100% on him. His entire reputation is riding on this. If he flames out he is going to make himself and Looie and his alma mater look really bad. That is why I am not totally giving up. I gotta believe he is dying inside and wants this to turn around.
But right now, the results are not good.
