Red Shirt Wait?
« on: November 16, 2008, 05:43:22 PM »
Now this has no truth or rumor to it. More or less just a hypothetical question posed by myself. Since Phil Wait has been declared a sophomore due to his age and really isn't ready to contribute this season, why not red shirt him? Could we survive on a rotation of Burrell, Evans, Coker with a mix of TJ and RT? I'm not sure what the NCAA ruling would be on the matter either since he went to a prep school if he would have all 4 years of eligibility if he redshirted anyways much like a case of Rob Thomas last year, use it or lose it. If we could redshirt him and he could have 4 years of eligibility ahead of him would you?

he only has 3 years of eligibility.  Not a bad idea if he's not ready to contribute plus it would spread out the scholarship distribution.

Dave, if the NCAA's ruling means  that he has 4 years to play 3 then yes it's worth doing.  The issue is not so much the program's ability to survive with the current roster. That is what it is and the success of this season will not be changed significantly  by Phil Wait's progress. He is however a big guy with skills and it might be worth it to take their time getting his body ready so he can contribute next year.  If he can begin the '09-10 season as a "redshirt soph" and not a "true junior" I say they should do it.

How old is he?  I believe he can no longer compete when he turns 25.

Didn't Marc Jackson(not St. John's but the C who played for the Warriors/Sixers) play college ball when he was 26-28?

Exceptions are given for military experience (George Mason had a 30 year old that was in the millitary) and for religious missons, etc.  Football is the only sport that I am aware of that doesn't have an age limit in the NCAA--hence the infamous Chris Weinke.

Didn't Greg Oden play college ball with the Buckeyes when he was like 26-27?   <just kidding>

Damm, that guy looked like an old man before his 21st birthday!

I know for a fact he missed a practice last year to go to his 20 year high school reunion!

Yvonne Joseph was the starting center on some really good Georgia Tech teams with John Salley, Mark Price, Bruce Dalrymple, Duane Ferrell and Tom Hammonds. He was 28 when he graduated. I believe the Nets drafted him in the second round. How old was Andrew Gaze when he was at Seton Hall?
