Gift is going to have to play about 30 minutes and Dom is going to have play significant minutes at the 4. Hope Lav doesnt pull the redshirt off Jones for this one
-
Congratulations to him...
Horrible timing for the team with Obekpa questionable at best for tomorrow's game.

I hope everything is good for Orlando and wife's newborn.
If the baby was born today, and is doing fine, what do most of you see as the acceptable protocol for how much time one misses for a college team? It doesn't happen often in college, but I'm wondering why O, if he was there for the birth, wouldn't simply scoot down to Philly to play tomorrow, then head back with the team right after the game?

Would you want a guy who has probably been up all day friday and all night friday night to leave NYC for Philly at about 9am Saturday morning and play a 1:30 game for you? Do you think he'd contribute much in that situation?

Tiznow,Ralph and Paultzman are going down at 9am they can pick him up. Plenty of room in the minivan
-
Per SJU release the baby was born in Providence.
-
Some of the things being said about this on twitter are disgusting I cannot believe these people claim to be SJU fans.
We get it, missing Obekpa and Sanchez tomorrow makes it tough. But these kids are not being disciplined and are not academic casualties. Injuries and family situations happen. My God people act like they are owed a full SJU team. The team is playing great. Support Chris and Orlando and support the team tomorrow even shorthanded.
My God. People act like SJU is intentionally doing this stuff...
-
It's not as if Sanchez is looking for an excuse not to play tomorrow. I'm sure he wants to be there.
Congratulations to him and his wife

Sports fans sometimes forget that they are watching these athletes play a game. I want this team to win like everyone else, but in the grand scheme of things, it really isn't that important.

Oh I know it's really horrible how people are mocking this situation and using it as an excuse to be a class clown

I treaded delicately by simply asking a question because I was not privy to details. But yes, twitter-verse is another animal which will never be tamed by the impulses of many to say whatever comes into their mind that nanosecond.
Upon reading the baby was born in Providence, it of course implicitly answered my question.
I would put it at 50/50 whether O would have played well. Players that have illness or injury or other circumstances sometimes play better than when they're under normal conditions. I do think it's prudent to spend the time with the baby on distance alone. It is a time to cherish. It's unfortunate prior generations may have missed out on a birth due to other responsibilities.
Theo - nice ....
-
It always bothers me when athletes/coaches either miss the birth of a child or leave right after.
Congratulations to Orlando!
-
I absolutely agree that the lunatics on twitter need to leave the guy alone.
It's a great moment, he should enjoy this. And like I said, I'm sure he feels bad about missing the game. He obviously wants to be there.
-
Congrats to Orlando and his wife! It is a good news story for SJU and I am impressed that this has been under the radar (has this even popped up on JJ?)
Negative: we are going to be really short tomorrow on a big game that can help us big time.
Positive: This is the game that we can afford to lose and we need him more down the stretch then tomorrow.
Either way this is only at SJU type of thing but a special and unique thing.
Congrats again to the Sanchez family!
-
I'm disappointed and embarrassed to hear people on Twitter are making negative remarks. I always felt for all the fans we had who annoyed the majority of the fan base and 'caused problems' they were nothing compared to the fans of some real big schools when it came to Twitter trolling.

He's a big dude. He probably needs two or three seats. We'll leave Ralph in Queens
-
Jeeze, people are unbelievable. Dude has a wife, clearly he can start a family if he wants to.
Congratulations to Orlando!
-
Even with my demanding job, when each of my kids were born, I took off, no matter how big the deal or high the stakes were at the time. Life is too short. If the birth of your child is not your highest priority, your're an idiot.
Congrats Orlando and family!

No one on Twitter from what I've seen is ACTUALLY upset at his decision to miss the game tomorrow.

Here's wishing the Sanchez family health and luck. I also hope Orlando comes back playing the best basketball of his life.

Congrats to the Sanchez family. Best wishes.

Tom Doherty, a good SJU fan, tweeted something to the extent that Sanchez' kid will be around long after tomorrow but tomorrow's game is a once in a lifetime game. Implying that he should not have to be home at this point.
Tommy I think wisely deleted it. He is a great fan but even he saw how that was in poor taste. He replaced it with this tweet:
thomas doherty @tuckahoetommy · 35m
No Sanchez (congrats on baby) no problem #SJUBB train gonna run thru Nova Lets go Johnnies

So the supportive things people are saying on twitter are "disgusting". What were you talking about then? You started this, then when someone called you on it you try to pull a Jedi mind trick or something ::)

Some people feel the need to make up outrage in order to put themselves on their high horse. I don't get it. I was doing #sjubb and Orlando Sanchez searches and saw NO ONE seriously upset or questioning the guys decision to miss the game to be with his family.

Misguided sure. " Disgusting" was misleading

Was it common knowledge that he's married and that his wife was pregnant prior to today's announcement? Both were news to me

I knew he was married. Thought he already had a kid but I could have misheard and he was expecting.

Fair enough, thats one. However it's so far on the fringe in terms of reaction that its not even worth acknowledging IMO.

I've been a part of two drawn-out births and I actually wouldn't be surprised to see him contribute . . . but then he'd crash and crash hard immediately after the game.
-
Funny that Sanchez's wife is in Providence and the Friars still couldn't close on Sanchez. +1 for Lav
-
Congratulations to him. But this is bad timing. Sampson and Gift are going to have to be carefull w the foul situation. We can play a 3 guard line up and Dom is going to get some time at the 4.

Yeah before Orlando got busy he should have pulled out his pocket schedule and noticed they would be playing Villanova 9 months from then :)
-
Congrats to Orlando. Tomorrow will be Gift's day to shine. I respect his decision entirely. No problem. Having said that, I am a big family man and I know I'd be suited up for the Villanova game if I were him. But no hay problema. We still win this game. Gift and Dom have a lot of experience and are gritty warriors.

Completely uncalled for. Looking at his twitter feed, dude needs to get a life.
-
Primo should enjoy this occasion. Forget the idiots with the comments. Birth of a child is sacred. We will play basketball without him.
-
Congrats to orlando and family! Very exciting for him and time he will be happy he spent w his family.
We are in a tough spot but that's life. Gift could come up big. Time to un-redshirt Christian jones? Ha ha ha

Social media makes everyone think there a star because the world can see their posts and react to them. Unfortunately social media is not going away. I think Sanchez realizes you can't worry about dumb people dropping dimes. If it wasn't for his daughter being born people would go off on something else that he did.
I agree with what Calipari is doing in UK by helping his players learn the proper way of social media. It can be a great tool.
What finally changed my mind about Twitter was when Pappa Bush got a twitter account. If he can embrace social media then it is not just for the young anymore.

Seems like Orlando has lost someone close to him today too per his fb. Our guys can't catch a break.
"Oh my God that tragedy one of the people most important in my life, "Hector Baez" to deceased hope that God has you in glory. I never gave thanks as I wanted to, I would have liked to see what you wanted for me, but peaceably in his memory. Rest in peace"

Agent;
@bjbass2: RBA announces the signing of Orlando Sanchez (6'9 225 SF/PF @StJohnsRedStorm) 7.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists https://t.co/JLmvHZdBOn
-
that "highlight" reel is pretty sad
-
His agent looks to have a great track record. http://www.rbasports.com/rba_athletes.html (http://www.rbasports.com/rba_athletes.html)
37 clients and not one has a job.
-
I truly wish him the best of luck and thank him for representing SJU...But if ALL your college highlights are against a sucktacular Fordahm team that is pretty telling on what is not being shown.

He had some more good games, the person who put the whole thing together though looks pretty second rate. I wish him the best, hopefully he can do well in Europe.
-
He can play Europe, or something, but he's not going to the NBA w out a ticket.
And neither are Sampson and Obekpa.
