Nkereueum Okoro, St. Raymond’s (2012): Okoro, who said he is attempting to make a transition from the four to the wing, struggled somewhat against Penn Wood. He worked the high post well, but seemed to force his drives to the basket. He is crafty with the ball when going to the rim and can also distribute it to his teammates. Okoro moves well without the ball and can rebound.
Coach Antigua said that Okoro has been receiving interest from St. John’s, Kentucky, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

February, 2009: Okoro has incredible length and a thick trunk, which indicates that he will gain a substantial amount of strength and quickness as he matures throughout his high school career. He also has big hands, which already help him to snag boards on the offensive end, but his hands should help Okoro to improve his ball-handling skills, which he will need to play out on the perimeter. He also needs to improve his jump shooting consistency as well as add range to his jumper. Okoro hits the glass with great effort and passion, grabbing a number of offensive rebounds for his team. He will also drive the ball from the perimeter, using his good body control to adjust in the air for lay-ins. Okoro runs the floor exceptionally well and scores in transition. He needs to refine his footwork in the post and cut down on his penchant for trying to do too much and turning the ball over. Okoro plays with good defensive energy and contest shots using his athleticism and impressive length.
December, 2008: Okoro, a freshman, has a diversified game and a frame that will become even more impressive as he matures. He has very long arms, big hands, and a thick trunk which signals that he has the capacity to add much more weight and muscle to his frame. Okoro hits the boards on both ends very well, especially on the offensive end, earning his team more scoring opportunities while snaring rebounds on the offensive boards in traffic. In addition to his length, Okoro has a very good quick second jump, which also helps him on the offensive glass. Okoro also has the ability to score off the dribble, using his nice first step. He also has the ability to handle the ball in transition and finding open players streaking to the rim. Look for this young player to rise up the ranks in the very near future.

Nkereuwem Okoro reeled off a list that included USC, Marquette, Kentucky, St. John's (offer), Villanova, Arkansas, Pitt, Drexel, Siena, and George Mason. Okoro, who does "not really" have a favorite added that he does "not at all" have a timetable for a decision.
Okoro, who has a nice inside-outside game, sees himself at the 2 when he gets to college. "Straight wing, my desired position for college is a 2-guard." With the way he shot the ball in a 69-56 loss to Shabazz (NJ) on Sunday at the Prime Time Shootout that looks like it may well be possible. Okoro was 8/13 from the field, including 3/3 beyond the arc, finishing with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He was named the MOP for his quality showing.
"I want to go to college where I can make an impact my freshman year," commented Okoro on what he is looking for in a school. He added that he wants to play in an "up and down" style and also stated, "I want to be in the Big East. That's my favorite conference and I think it's the toughest."
Although Villanova is just one of many Big East schools on his list, Okoro gave the program high marks. "Oh I like Villanova. They have a player, Corey Fisher, who played with the [AAU team the Long Island Lightning] and I play with the Lighting. I love that program a lot."
Asked for his thoughts on Jay Wright, Okoro said, "I think he's a great coach [and I] . . . think he's having a great season."
While VU might be having a great season, St. Raymond's has not been as good as Okoro may have hoped, largely due to a number of offseason transfers. The exodus of players has given the sophomore a chance to become more involved and step up, and he sees it helping him. "I think it's making me a way better player. There's a lot of pressure on me and Dan [Dingle]." Okoro said he is averaging around 25 points over his past three or four games and that the Ravens are in second in their league.

David Trottman remembers a very different Kerwin Okoro from the one whose stock is surging all over the courts of New York City. The former Cardinal Hayes standout was good friends with the St. Raymond rising junior's older brother Idiongo, who played at All Hallows, growing up and was often at their house.
“He would just play video games all day,†Trottman said of a grammar school Okoro. “We would try to convince him to play basketball, but he said he wasn’t ready.â€
A lot has changed.
“I saw a picture of him going up for a dunk and I couldn't believe it,†Trottman said.

At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, he plays forward for St. Ray’s, but he sees himself as a point guard or shooting guard at the next level. He is already getting interest from UConn, St. John’s, Marquette, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Arizona, USC and Rutgers, among others.

Nkereuwem Okoro has been a mainstay on the New York City basketball scene for a few years, despite only preparing for his junior season at St. Raymond’s High School in the Bronx. Okoro will team with Daniel Dingle, his friend and classmate, to help give Oliver Antigua one of the top teams in the CHSAA this coming year. Those hopes were almost dashed when Okoro was injured this Fall and as a result he has been missing from the IS8 league in recent weeks. What was originally feared as possibly a season-ending injury now might not require him to miss any time.
“I have ligament damage in my thumb,” Okoro told NBE earlier this week, “but I’ll be back before the season starts.”
That is good news for the Ravens and bad news for their opponents this year. Okoro is a 6-foot-4 G/F who currently weighs in at 210 pounds and over the summer with the Long Island Lightning he showed that he has improved greatly over the course of the year. He was far more aggressive offensively, and his athleticism and explosiveness improved as well. His strength and size allow him to play multiple positions and he is an excellent ballhandler for a player his size.
He is receiving plenty of scholarship offers and high-major recruiting interest already. St. John’s and new coach Steve Lavin invited Okoro to their Midnight Madness celebration recently. Okoro decided to stay home and get some extra work in rather than take the night off.
“No, I didnt,” said Okoro when asked if he made a visit to SJU. “I stayed home and worked on my conditoning and left-hand that weekend,” Okoro said.
While Okoro has the reputation of being able to score a lot of points at the high school and AAU levels, his lack of true position has many programs kind of taking a wait-and-see approach in his recruiting. However, Okoro told NBE he is working on an area of his game that college coaches will likely be very excited about.
“I’m working on trying to become a lock-down defender,” he said.
Okoro has the strength, toughness and athleticism, along with size, to be an outstanding defensive player. The development into a top-notch defender would make him only more valuable to the programs he lists as recruiting him this Fall.
“Rutgers, St. John’s, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Villanova,” mentioned Okoro when asked what schools were recruiting him this fall.
Okoro also mentioned that Kentucky came to St. Ray’s to scout a Ravens’ workout. UK assistant coach Orlando Antigua is the brother of St. Ray’s head coach Oliver Antigua. Both of the Antigua brothers attended Pittsburgh for college, another school singled out by Okoro, as he hopes to visit Pitt in the not-too-distant future.
While the St. Ray’s program, and many others in the CHSAA, have seen a startling number of talented players leave NYC for prep schools, most out of state, Okoro has cherished his time with the Ravens.
“Playing varsity as a freshman and learning how to play good basketball from Coach Antigua and the rest of the coaching staff,” said Okoro when asked of what he has liked most about attending the Bronx school. “He (Antigua) has developed me alot and I learn alot [from him].”
It is not surprising Okoro also has high hopes and team goals for the Ravens this season. They will be among the favorites in the CHSAA and the state.
“Our goal is to win a city ‘chip this year and hopefully see how far we can get in the states,” said Okoro.
Just a junior, recruitniks and college coaches are very likely to follow Nkereuwem Okoro over the next 12 months as he looks to continue to develop his perimeter skills and lock down a spot on a high major roster in the future. NBE will be certain to do the same and report on his progress, on the court and in his recruitment, every step of the way.

Kerwin still had this thumb wrapped up this weekend. He isn't that fundamental but the kid never stops moving. He's always all over the ball on both ends of the floor and crashes the boards hard. If he can develop more skill and IQ he's a player I'd like to coach.

The mother of a future teammate, Allison Niang, said she loved Fred Hoiberg and would've committed to Iowa St. weeks before George did. George was a hell of a pickup for the Cyclones. She found The Mayor to be very genuine. In context, I'm not sure how many others have visited there, but Ames is considered to be a relative cultural capital of Iowa.

Haven't been to Ames yet, but have friends from there who were very NY-like, actually, back in college. Iowa's flat and boring, but the people are considered to be generally nicer than some from surrounding states - the places I've been in the state are really pleasant (unlike, say, Nebraska or much of Missouri.)
