All over twitter - SJU offers Cam Mack JUCO point guard Salt Lake CC. Being "looked at" by Gonzaga and a host of others.

Can we expect a Mack/Artest West Coast swing visit soon?

Good to see lots of high majors were chasing him. Paultz, whats your sense as to the scholarship situation?

Will add Steere, wait until Spring to try for Precious, assuming SJ has successful season & turns his head. Then roster will shake out with a defection or two, the norm today, & go from there.

Welcome Cam!
-
Cam played in UAA. Watched him a ton and he's tough guard with good size. Kind of unheralded and he burst on to the scene and was top assist getter in the league around 6-7. Will be a great addition to the program.

I really like Gaffney's game and potential but mentally I'm unsure he's capable of making next step. A lot of schools were turned off by his constant moping and whining on court. Danny Hurley is either gonna make him or break him.
Cam is tougher, stronger, and just as talented. Comes in more ready.

Thanks for sharing this. What kind of player is Cam Mack? What's his game like?
-
He's a pass first point guard/ slasher/ shooter. Good size. Sees the floor well, plays with attitude. There's plenty of video available for Cameron Mack.
-
Is Mack a true pg? We need a true floor general who can QB the team and setup other guys. If he can score and slash that's fine but we need a reliable ball handler who can be counted on.

I agree. If Shamorie goes pro, we'll have Dixon who is a more than capable scoring guard. Ideally, Mack really is pass first, but that's becoming rarer by the day.

Very rare. Based on his recent stat lines, sounds like he may be more of the scoring variety but let's hope he's a floor general.

Next year we could have our most balanced roster yet.

3 pt stats in JUCO are not trustworthy because they are almost always fudged. FTs can't. He missed 9 FTs in a game the other day. Good shooters don't miss 9 FTs in a game.

His team mate Josh Colon shoots 92 percent from the free throw line and 17 percent from three. Presumably he's a lights out shooter. Curious: what was Colon's three point percentage before they fudged his stats, was it negative?

I've put in stats before in JUCO...I know it ranges from "ehhh let's not count those last second heaves and maybe that air ball was a pass" to blatant changing of misses to make your guy look better. FTs really can't be fudged--at least game to game. That is a far more reliable stat. Reliable doesn't mean that I think it is a better indication of how well someone shoots, just that it's more likely to be true.
As for Colon, without knowing more, I wouldn't label him a shooter either. it's 5 games in. From the eye test, Mack doesn't strike me as a great shooter, but I haven't given in the full Marillac analysis. I don't have the energy or desire anymore.

Great to see our guy @Camiscute2 is off to a great start leading @SLCCbasketball to a 9-2 start with some huge wins. Currently ranks nationally @NJCAA #13 in scoring, #3 in assists, #7 in steals, and #15 in field goals #SJUBB

Get to see. Watched some video. He looks like a really good athlete. I see a lot of range in his passing ability. He has a solid handle, and gets in the lane with his left or right. Lotta Juco guards aren't well rounded in this regard. He really seems to be. He can dribble, penetrate, pass, rebound and he shoots almost 50% from three.
Sounds like a late bloomer. Great job staff!
Who knows what players will return next season. NBADraft.net lists Ponds as the 32nd pick. He could go higher if he keeps this up. Hope it happens for him. I think Heron and Figeuroa will return and we could go Mack, Heron, Figueroa, Steere and Simon to start. Not bad.

Heron is not an NBA player imo. Protypical college wing. Doesn’t mean he won’t leave and I’m sure Paultz has heard that if he’s gonna tell us.

I love Heron, too, but he's not surefire pick in either round. Hope he makes the right decision. All these kids should get evaluated on the NBA's dollar. We could have several guys that should.

Heron did get NBA feedback last year.

As of right now, Ponds is an early second rounder with the possibility to go late first or fall to the middle of the second. I'd say there is a 90% chance he's gone.
I don't think Heron would get picked this year as of right now. A lot of that hinges on his measured height and reach--which I suspect was less than what NBA teams had liked to see from him when he explored the draft. I think he can stick in the NBA as a role player so he needs to be careful about leaving too soon. Teams will want a player like him to be NBA ready since the ceiling isn't the same as a kid like O'Shae Brissett. It will likely be best for him to show more of his game next year when Ponds leaves.
This is a weak PG class but a very strong SG/SF class. That should be taken into account.
-

He's never been in one place too long.
-
I thought it was pretty obvious this was a one year thing with Heron. I will say maybe(?) there is a chance he falls in love with the school and wants to graduate but that is a long shot I'd think.

I'd agree with you if the process didn't change. I believe that kids are allowed to hire an agent and still return to school if they are one of the 67 or so invites to the combine but go undrafted.
Barring a deep run or Heron just taking off, I don't think he'll get that combine invite. This is a deep SG/SF...I mean just look at Duke with Barrett, Williamson, and Reddish. He's not projected to be picked this year. Also, there are a bunch of players who were invited to the combine last year (Tyus Battle, Porter, the Martin brothers) that returned to college and will be locks to get invites after this season. So the invites to the combine will be as competitive as ever since kids have nothing to lose by declaring and hiring an agent.

Top draft picks don't usually attend the combine.

I don't believe players skipping the combine changes the overall # of invitations, but I could be wrong. The point of the combine is to look at players who have a realistic shot of getting drafted in the 60 spots not to waste the time of NBA teams.

Right. The point I was trying to make is that Heron would have a better chance than you were suggesting because it is unlikely the Barretts, Williamsons and Reddishs would attend if invited opening up some spots for others that may not get an initial invite.

Last year NBA announced it expected 69 attendees at combine

I honestly don't know much about the process. I believe it's usually only a few guys who skip entirely. More guys, like Markelle Fultz, will go get measured but not participate at all or only participate in a few things.
Either way, I think the rules are helpful for our chances with both Ponds and Heron. Without the rule changes I'd imagine Ponds would be 100% gone and Heron 90%+. I"ll take the 10% or so chance Ponds doesn't get drafted and the odds on Heron either not getting the combine invite or getting one and then going undrafted.
I can't see Heron getting drafted this year, and he'd be cleared for a return if had a combine invite. There is also a chance Ponds wont get drafted and he'd be cleared to return.

Heron not getting drafted based on what I see so far. Ponds is a shooin for low first or high second round. Ponds passing has improved dramatically now that he has people who can play. Occasionally he lapses into a bit of hotdogging but that is okay because he is from Brooklyn and is incredible. Often he is not getting the assist as the third guy in the passing sequence is scoring but, make no mistake, Ponds is the force that creates the open man. Interesting game, team hustled on D but for half of the game D was not smartly executed particularly against the 3. Offense was great, ball movement nice, pressure on D great. Fig exceptional, Clarke had no foolish fouls.....in all a commendable performance. We are gonna win some games where we just flat out outscore people while playing indifferent D. If D rises to an above average to excellent level this team can go aways in the postseason.

Impressive. College of Southern Idaho is always good. Coached against them back in the day and I was really impressed with the program top to bottom.

To the gentleman who thought Heron is not NBA material, I strongly disagree. He will have to go to the G league but he will eventually make a roster and do well. He is explosive to the basket and shoots the three well. I agree he may not get drafted (but he might) but he will be in the NBA. He puts the ball in the hoop and has the prototypical 6'5" shooting guard body that teams crave now.

Problem is he's not a shooting guard. He's like a combo 3/4. He can hit the outside shot but his core game is taking the ball into the lane and finishing around the rim which he does really well in college. However at 6'5 he won't be able to do that in the NBA. He could have a good career overseas.

I don’t see why an explosive 6’5” guy can’t do that. He’s got a pretty similar body to Dwayne wade who’s made a career out of just that. Why can’t he do that off the bench?

He needs another year. I don't see how he'd get invited to the combine this year with all the graduating seniors getting dibs over him, a strong 2/3 draft class, and several combine invites from last year having returned.
I think he can be an NBA player. He can guard 2-4, he can shoot, and he can create. He can be a late first/early second rounder next year if he stays another year, proves he can be the man, and works on creating and distributing more. Teams that will pick a player like him want a ready product and I don't think he's that yet.

Similar body sure. Similar game no. Dwayne Wade could really handle and create. Heron doesn't really have that skillset. He's more of a better shooting, more athletic Anthony Glover. At his height I don't see his game translating at the NBA level. Hopefully he gets a shot.

So does he need to be able to get to the rim, which apparently is hard to do at 6’5” in the nba or does he need to be able to do that and create like future hall of famer Dwayne wade?
Whether or not he plays in the NBA I dunno, but to say his skill set won’t translate cuz of size is wrong. Regardless I’m glad he’s here now, he’s fun to watch.

I am speechless over this. Heron takes completely wide open threes from Ponds dishes, he gets space to drive, and he gets alley oops with perfect direction and touch.

Heron's numbers could be better but obviously this is Pond's team and he's playing as a shoot first point guard. It's just my observation and not as an indictment on anyone.

I agree...Heron's 3 point percentage has only gone up to 47% from 33% last year. It would probably be 60% if Ponds wasn't around.

Even if Mack isn't as dynamic as Ponds, but still very good, then we should be ok next year given the improving supporting cast around him.

Let’s take a step back in hoping that Mack will be an adequate replacement for Ponds, especially as soon as next year. Doing that will leave you extremely disappointed and isn’t fair to the kid.

No one's saying that but if he's truly as good as the #2 ranked JUCO player in the country then he should be able to come in Day 1 and start for this team. That's not unreasonable in any way.

Exactly. He won’t be Ponds. And maybe he won’t have to be. We should have a deeper team next year. Especially if Heron stays (fat chance, I know).

Agreed. We also need another PG recruit. We simply cannot go into next season with just Mack and he DePaul game shows us why.
-
He's having a terrific year, #2 in the latest JUCO ranks, check out his monster stat line this season:
http://njcaa.org/sports/mbkb/2018-19/div1/players/cameronmack7sni
It'll be very interesting to see the identity of our offense w him at the helm next year.
Once again- our biggest 19'-20' recruit is retaining Justin.

I think (and hope) we will add another PG. Some interesting names I'd like to see:
Jaylen Fisher TCU - #59 RSCI recruit who may be an immediate eligible grad transfer and will have two years of eligibility. Great defender and shooter. Some injury concerns.
AJ Harris - #93 RSCI who transferred from Ohio State to New Mexico St. after averaging 14 minutes. NMSU is 25-4 and he was teammates with LJ Figueroa. Averaging 10 and 3.4. Good defender.
Either of these kids could really put us over the top next year with a Heron return or PA signing.
-
Fish is my guy. I'd love him here but I could see him going closer to home.
-
Only need a one year rental pg at most as Cam has 3 years of eligibilty and don't want to scare off Curbello or another HS pg. JMO

Nothing wrong with the kid setting goals. If he’s good enough god speed, if not, hope he has the sense to make the right decision.

Do you think it's wise to basically tell your future coaching staff to recruit over you? Do you think it's wise for a kid that hasn't stayed in one place for more than a year since he was in 9th grade to announce his intention to leave his next (FOURTH college) school after a year months before he even sets foot on campus?
This kind of thinking is so toxic to a program. We have kids "going pro" early to play in Serbia and EURO minor leagues. Lovett's dad had him sit out to rest and now he's playing in Serbia with no resume--and he was exponentially more talented than Mack. Good programs don't deal with this crap year in and year out. Boothe and Paschall are 5th year seniors with the Albany transfer at Nova. The benefit of having 3* kids is supposed to be keeping them 3-4 years if they are good enough...not worrying about them going to Ajberbajan to play for $45,000. Nigel Williams-Goss is was a second round pick and he's paying for 100k in Serbia (before Euro taxes and agent + middlemen fees).
-
Always a fan of your posts Marillac but come on man, why on this?
I think this is a huge mistake and will turn into a disaster. If he is our only PG next year I won't even watch. If they can't add AJ Harris, Jaylen Fisher, or another proven grad-transfer I'm out. It's just not worth the grief and shows the staff will never learn.
JUCO ball sucks now. Everyone qualifies out of high school unless they have some serious, deep-rooted learning problem or they went to a shady school. It's not like the old days when there was quality up and down the JUCO ranks. On top of that, post-grad basketball schools have taken up the market. I have two friends that coach post-grad teams that play JUCOs as well as the IMG's and Oak Hills of the country. Kids go there to play the same comp as JUCOs while retaining four years of eligibility.
Figgy was lightning in a bottle because he transferred out of a 28-win NCAA tournament team after his staff left and he was blocked from following them.
-
Do you think it's wise to basically tell your future coaching staff to recruit over you?
This kind of thinking is so toxic to a program. Good programs don't deal with this crap.
If they’re not already trying to bring in better talent than him regardless of what the kid says then the staff is not doing their job.

This kid is going to be so nasty. Looks like an excellent distributor too, if Heron decides to stay around, he and LJ can pick up the scoring difference between Ponds and Mack. Our bigs will get easy dunks with this kid driving.
Our 2019/2020 prospects rely on Mack arriving on campus and Heron sticking around.

Looks like an explosive athlete and good speed. Excited to see what he can do.

So you believe Mack will have a greater impact on the team than Ponds?

In a since deleted post his mother said she wished “we” waited instead of committing to St. John’s and that our fans are sick and vicious. She tagged him and to his credit I think he asked her to delete it.
On the court I am a fan of his. He needs to work on that left a lot and finish with it on the drives to that side or they will be blocked at this level. Defense will make or break him.
I’d love to add a grad-transfer PG like AJ Harris.

Hsu recruited Aj Harris to New Mexico St. with LJ Figueroa. Savage is a player.

He's coming and he will be gone after next season. No reason to ready anymore into anything, he's a very upfront guy

See ya

He asked for his release per Brazille.

also is there any doubt this kid plays for nebraska? lol

If true wish him well, his loss. Just opens up a spot for another kid Mullin, Mitch, and Jr are recruiting.

Don't mind me I had a thought maybe our coach had a relationship with our best recruit.
Get this Indiana Pacer out of my life please.
-
If that happens and Mullin does not end up stepping down, we can change Matt A’s nickname to Matt Snake and I hope every SJU fan shit$ on his whole schtick. Because that would leave no doubt in my mind that he was in this kids ear before he left on our freaking dime.

Apparently he didn't...what a joke Mullin is as a coach, just let Matt A be the one and only, setting him and the program up for disaster as soon as he left. With no relationship with this guy there was no way to do damage control.
-
I don't buy that there is no connection between Mack and Mullin. Several instances this year, on this site, people posted links to Mack's twitter (I'm not a twitter guy") in which he specifically referred to Mullin as "my coach". My guess is the uncertainty in the HC position for next year, however it is being framed publicly, is playing a role, and my guess is that a certain little egomaniac who now resides in Omaha has been spewing this stuff in Mack's ear for weeks even while still employed by SJU. Remember that next time someone posts about how much Matt A "loves" his alma mater.

Lincoln, not Omaha.

Yup, my mistake. But you get where I'm going.

Feel the same way when he Darien Williams decommitted from Iowa St and came to St. John's?
Also I really do think Cam is opening up his recruitment. Had a monster year and think there were a lot of whispers in his ear.
-
Sju can limit the release since he signed. Should not allow a transfer to Nebraska
-

Why? What would we gain by doing that besides being spiteful to a kid looking to get an education and further his basketball career.
-
As I stated, truth is I didn't think about it. But will say two things on this, Dave. One, Hoiberg left not too long after Matt. Maybe Williams knew this, and maybe Hoiberg had no issue with Matt looking to take the kid with him. If Mullin leaves, no problem with Mack landing in Nebraska. But if Mullin doesn't, I'll believe that Matt was in this kids ear for weeks while working for SJU, and that is just wrong. Now that he's at Nebraska Matt is free to do whatever he wants. But don't give me the "I love" or "I bleed" SJU if while working for our university he was actively recruiting a commit to another program. I've changed jobs before, and I'm as cutthroat about my job as anyone else, and there are lines you don't cross and things you don't do because they are just wrong. And if this is how it plays out I hope everyone views our former assistant from the same perspective.

Not punitive in the least bit. He was being highly compensated by sju and working for Nebraska.

Matt was being compensated by SJU, not Mack. You want to hold it against Mack for Matt’s actions.
-
Mack signed a contract (letter of intent). He has a obligation to honor it unless sju let’s him out. There are consequences to every action. Feel free to deem them punitive. I don’t.

He has the right to ask out of the contract. If SJU chooses not to then he has an obligation to honor it. But why not let him out? There is a human element here and you don’t want or need a disgruntled player.

Mack didn’t just screw the staff, he screwed his future teammates. I don’t think a kid should be let out of the contract if it hurts the program.
Does that hurt the kid? TFB. Don’t sign the LOI if you’re not prepared to be man enough to honor it.

How often do universities push kids out? Funny we don’t hear they should honor the contract.

I think this school has honored contracts in cases where others may have not.
Rob Thomas comes to mind.
I don’t think it’s unfair for them to not let anyone out of their LOI at this stage in the game.
You got a spot that others wanted. A spot that others could have filled. Now, a dozen players are screwed because there’s no point guard.

Rob Thomas is an excellent example. Also, there is a difference in letting a player know that it may not make the most sense for them to stick around because their playing time or role may be reduced, and provide them with the option of leaving for greener pastures. That is very different from revoking a scholarship (i.e. the proverbial contract).

If we want to hurt Nebraska we should make them take him.
I don’t think even Matt wants him after realizing the package deal he is part of.
-
I don't want and we don't need another 3 star occupying a scholarship. Good riddance.
-
Being rumored that Mack will set up a visit to Arkansas.
-
Mack has committed to Nebraska. I love it!!!
They deserve each other. Oh man, I can’t wait to read his mommy’s posts about haters, her media tour, see what he does to that locker room, and then warch him destroy their continuity. Matt just brought a poltergeist into that program. 😂
-
likelihood of him even getting through a season in Nebraska?
-
can we just delete the Cam Mack thread..
does anyone honestly care what he does anymore..?

Mack and his mother said before he committed to SJ that he was going to play college ball for a year and then go pro. But SJ dodged a bullet because instead of an honorable all Big 10 selection who averaged 12/7/5 eighth place SJ's got Nick Rutherford instead. Ahahahahahahahahahaha

I gave you many compliments as I grew on this site, but as I evolved as a poster,I quickly became enlightened to your distaste for the program....we were fans at the same time and I’m positive we both shared many days and nights of happiness after big wins....time for us to become the voice for our Posterity and become a positive voice for our future fans!!

Where have people been seeing that Mack is leaving Nebraska? I haven't seen anything other than that he's suspended and/or dealing with a family matter.

I apologize I took the Big Ten coaches all conference picks and not the media

Fake news.
Give me Rutherford all day. He plays his heart out. Who needs talent.

This is what happens when a parent gets too involved. 5 high schools and home school to end it (because no school or coach was a good fit), 4 transfers while in college and commitments to 5 different colleges. This might be the most mishandled athlete of all-time. He’ll be a 24 year old junior if he ever plays again—which he almost certainly won’t with his problems in a school and immaturity.

I called Luther Wright to ask him about your opinion. He said Lenny Cooke was the most mismanaged athlete of all time. Lenny said it was Art Schlichter. Art Schlichter said it was Todd Marinovich. Marinovich said Brian Bosworth. Bosworth mentioned Lenny Dykstra. Dykstra said Denny McLain, hands down. McLain mentioned Tonya Harding, who said Eddie Griffin told her that Cam Mack might be the most mishandled athlete of all-time. So at least you two agree there.

Lenny Cooke made one massive mistake. His move to NJ was a wise one IMO.
Mack has made a dozen. He should have a degree and should be playing professionally somewhere. He changes schools every time he messes up. What kind of parenting is that? Blame the coach and school and leave? 11 schools in 7 years? How is that even possible?

The larger point being that the most mishandled athlete of all time is someone you've never heard of, because he was so mishandled that he never amounted to anything, whereas Cam Mack is going to make a good living playing basketball. Much like the real brave heroines of the me too movement aren't the actresses that ended up on the cover of Vanity Fair because they endured watching Harvey Weinstein jack it, they're the waitresses and cashiers who refused to.
