Is there anything new to report on Mr. R?
-
damn with the title of the thread I thought you had an update on mitch richmond
-
From someone I know that has pretty reliable info he is not coming because it does not work on his end. Adding in circumstantial evidence that he is not here by now and I must say it doesn't look good for him coming on board.

You do know that he was on campus at Dribble for Cure event last week, right?

They haven't even formally announced the hiring of Matic yet.

I have a feeling it might be some financial hurdles within the basketball budget

Let UA or VW endow that shit then!

Don't work like that. Plus UA doesn't have money like that.

In a previous text a few days ago I stated that I heard from a source that Mitch wasn't coming. Heard from a second source that he is happy with his current position as a scout for the Sacremento Kings and will not be coming to SJU. Just passing along what I have heard (you don't have to believe it...Moose).

I just asked if you were aware he was at an SJU event wearing SJU apparel. I find it odd how he would be at SJU event wearing SJU clothing when really he has 0 ties to the university. And also its not like he and Mullin played 10 years together.
My understanding is all signs point to him coming on board but money is tight.

Whew, that was quick! :) What you say may very well be true which would explain why he is happy at his current position but maybe more $ would entice him to take SJU job. Source was also a scout for an NBA team and basically says they have The Life of Riley compared to coaches which is what he used to be at the collegiate level.

Lets remember if he is on staff he will be another Keady. So while not a full fledged coach still slightly less crazy as the life of Mullin, Slice, Matt, and St. Jean.

I wonder if Cooley's tactics have raised Richmond's price somewhat. I'm sure he has a shrewd agent. Just a thought.

The $ was an issue from the beginning.

But could it be that MR's bargaining power has strengthened since the revelation of Cooley's race card?

No

In all honesty it's a worthless position. No need to pay millions to have your buddy on the team.

agree. also would rather have a young kid trying to make a name for himself who will work his ass off

1000 % disagree with you guys. No offense but I could not be further on the opposite end of the spectrum here. Getting mitch would be a gigantic bonus in my mind. Whether he ever actually goes on a recruiting trip (which I believe he could if other assistants stay home and there is 4 allowed on road at a time blah blah blah) just the pitch that any of our guys can give about sju gets stronger with not just one but two NBA HOF on staff. You already hear almost every kid interviewed after meeting with the staff about how we have nba ties and mullin is a HOF. Right now it's what we're selling and our nba ties (not nba production, which will have to wait) pitch is arguably as strong as anyone right now and then you add in "ohhhh by the way you'll also be able to work out and pick the brain of another hall of famer who is on our staff" that's huge and much more valuable then just a young "hungry" kid who I don't think there would even be a point of hiring as a special assistant which is more an added spot for special situations (I.e. Mean gene). Is it a make or break hire for us, no, but it's thecherry on top of the staff. Pay the man! Haha let's get it done

We need Mitch Richmond for all the above reasons . Just do it
-
What I wonder is just how impressed recruits will be with the idea of Mitch Richmond? He starred in California, and he played college ball pretty far away from here. Will it matter to a 16/17 year old kid that Mitch Richmond was great 20 years ago? What I think he will help with is the Red/White fan base. (Like Gene Keady did) They're the ones who know who he is, and how good he was. (And yes, for those too young to remember, he was that good)
