From Gus Alfieri to Mark Jackson to Erick Barkley, St. John’s glory years were rife with electric New York City born-and-bred point guards. In the Red Storm’s recent downturn, the area’s best floor generals, be it Kemba Walker or Darryl Bryant, opted to go elsewhere.

New coach Steve Lavin has turned that page, adding several top 100 prospects, and now he has a Queens point guard to reconnect with the program’s past decision makers.

Meet Jevon Thomas, a speedy and skilled 6-foot point guard who verbally committed to St. John’s on Wednesday morning, picking the Red Storm over Villanova, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Florida.

The article was wrong about one thing: Bryant wanted to come here, Norm didn't agree that he should.

When Steve Lavin took over the St. John's basketball program, he said "great talent will come to play with a great point guard."

It now appears Lavin is getting one.

Jevon Thomas, a speedy 5-11 junior who played at Edison High in Queens before transferring to Our Savior New American (L.I.) two years ago, called Lavin to accept a scholarship offer Wednesday.

"I wanna be part of the rebirth," Thomas said in a text to the Daily News. "Coach Lavin and his staff and their history is amazing."

This was nice to see about our future star point guard.

Jevon Thomas (Queens, N.Y./Our Savior New America)
2012, PG, 5-11, 170 pounds
Amayo and Calhoun may have left with the hardware, but Thomas was the best player on the floor on Saturday night. He is quick and bouncy point guard with an air-tight handle and a terrific feel for the game. Thomas also has terrific court vision and a perfected change-of-pace dribble, which allowed him to make plays for himself and others going north to south as well as east to west. The recent St. John's commit made plays on the defensive end of the floor as well and even knocked down two open three-pointers.

I liked how they pointed out that he knocked down some threes.

The shocking thing about his game from the videos is that he always seems so in control of his body.  It's almost like he's going in slow motion.  His vision is absurd.

Word to even have Purvis saying our name is huge. This young man looks better like he can play in the League already wow.
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

Purvis is talented.  Purvis and Shabazz Muhammad were coming to Louisville this weekend to check out the campus. His mother is in a relationship with his AAU coach.

It's entirely possible that Thomas may have to be a 2013 recruit.

So Jevon might go back to 2013?
