I think St Johns offers free applications therefore it leads to our high numbers. Several of my sons friends here in California were accepted at STJ but didn't enroll.

I have already understood

We are now 8th. NYU is the only non-CA school ahead of us.

The high number of CA school applications is a bit distorted in that in one application can be used for up to nine campuses--whereas We and NYU are one school applications

Yes, you can use one application but you do have to pay per school. So where it saves time filling out applications it does not save money. Speaking from experience of a parent whose daughter couldn't narrow it down from her top 7 UC's. ;)

Biggest population state by a lot. Most kids. No rocket science major needed to figure out that California schools have the highest number of applicants.

True about population but it doesn't hurt that the UC system is by far the best public higher education system in the country as well. They attract a ton of applicants from outside the state as well, especially Berkeley and UCLA. 6 schools in the top 50 national universities on the US News list. 5 of the top 10 public universities including the top 2. All extremely selective, well except Merced and Riverside.
