Go back to Dave's original post. Diallo is still in play I think.

St. John's next head coach is better than any of the current players on the Knicks active roster.
-
I'm really sick of all this "expected" shit. Tell me when the ink is dry.
-
To those who are doubting Mullin already in terms of being a guy who has never coached, what are the positives to this hire besides appeasing the boosters?
-
Ink is dry
-
Great news! Got our #1 guy, even if I don't agree with Mullin over Danny Hurley.

Some really exciting names being floated around for staff...

OH! Do tell!

Matt Abdelmassih
I only know about him from what I've heard here. So I understand he's a great recruiter. Anyone know how he is with X and O's?
-
PJ would be interesting as X and O guy. Coached him in Barcelona and GS.
-
FWIW -per Matt Abdelmassih's twitter - he has been in NY all weekend.

Recruiting Diallo I think.

Ahhh - hopefully for sju !

Are you hearing him as a possibility?
That's as good of an X's and O's guy as you will find.
Not a knock on the previous regime, but they liked to boast of their NBA ties, looks like it won't even be close compared to the staff coming in..

St Johns grad, now an assistant at Iowa State. Excellent recruiter in the NY area. He is Iowa States point man on Diallo.

Has long has this been in the works? I keep thinking they knew that Mullin might be interested before they made the decision on Lavin.
-
Chris is a really bright guy, not just in a basketball sense. He FULLY understands what this entails and has for awhile. He is not uprooting his life and putting his legacy on the line without a plan and a full assessment of whats needed and his strengths and weaknesses. Those that are against this hire on the premise he's not willing to put in the work or is neive enough too understand he needs some bench advise is just plain wrong.

I would hope so, but wouldn't shock me if they weren't based on the general ineptitude of sju admin

Ok, I'm excited.

Slice and Matt A?

He used to go to St. John's.
Massielo used to go to Kentucky.
Matt graduated from St. John's.

If it's slice and Matt a will Terrence be the third or will he be DOBO with an x and o guy as third?
-
I really don't know if Terrence will or will not be on staff. Haven't heard anything about him.

@TimBontemps: However, @HowieKussoy writes Barry Rohrrsen could join Mullin's staff. Would be a heck of a place for him to start: http://t.co/t9SlPJzTCm
-
Well, got to say, wasn't sold on this earlier, too many unknowns, but hard to not be excited about seeing Mullin reunited with SJU. Most of us grew up on those magical teams. Will support him 100% and excited to see what he does with the program!!!
-
Wow...personally think it's a risky hire.
Having said that he's my favorite all-time player and I'm as giddy as a school girl.
-

Possible candidates as assistants include Kentucky assistant Barry “Slice” Rorhssen, a Brooklyn native, former Manhattan coach and close friend of Mullin, Iowa State assistant coach Matt Abdelmassih, a St. John’s alum who has had a major hand in the Cyclones’ recent success and knows Mullin well, and Arizona assistant Emanuel “Book” Richardson from The Bronx.
IMO, Couldn't go wrong with any of those assistants.

Agree 100%. Amazing!

I need to know the rest of the staff....that's key. Mullin knows basketball but it's his first go around in coaching. Hope they got Slice and a great crew to go with him and let's go.
-
Interesting move--followed Chris in HS as both Clippers and was at virtually all his Redmen games at home and a number on the road, He was sweetness to watch. Having him return could have something to do with family--his kids are grown and his family is back here. When he played the family was always there including a couple of nuns-very close group. He has recently shown up more frequently back here, He was honored by XHS about 18 months ago and he has joined the Board. He was involved back here when he started in the league. Did a clinic in Breezy Point for a number of years (you could see he enjoyed the teaching). One of the great things about Chris is when he finally addressed the drinking problem--he could really pound down the beers and would get out of shape during summers when in the NBA. After 3 years he turned it a around. I think beside his BB skills, he brings life skills that can make his players complete individuals. More than a player he is a role model.
-
Nobody knows his complete staff because its not filled except for one spot...yes he has offers out and LOTS of interest and yes the names are VERY exciting but as of now nothing but verbal interactions

@AdamZagoria Early indications are that Chris Mullin is targeting some very strong recruiters w/ NYC ties...Will be developing in next few days.

Don't need to read past this sentence to know what an idiot this guy is:
Chris Mullin, the three-time Big East Player of the Year and all-time leading scorer for the Redmen before most sensible people decided that Redmen was an offensive nickname for a college team.
He also tried to compare Eddie Jordan to Chris Mullin. Chris Mullin played on the Dream Team, every kid knows of the Dream Team even if they don't know about how good Mullin actually was as a player at St. John's
-
What's crazy about this writer is that the other day he wrote t Seton Hall and Rutgers are screwed if St. John's hires Danny Hurley, so it's not like he's some unabashed St. John's hater, he just for some reason sees this as Eddie Jordan redux where I think with the right staff it will either be its own result or ideally more like Hoiberg
-

Seton Hall and Rutgers are screwed because they are in New Jersey, and because they are Seton Hall and Rutgers. Still, we don't know if he's right in saying that this is a bad hire. He doesn't know. There's no history except someone else's to point to.
And I had never even heard of Eddie Jordan before Rutgers hired him.

Words cannot properly express how much i hate this whole argument:
Here's the problem: That current 16-year-old power forward? The high school star who is looking at the one-and-done machine at Kentucky as his easy path to NBA riches? He doesn't care about what happened in 1985 in Queens. He wasn't alive in 1985. Chances are, his parents didn't know or care what was happening in 1985.
-
Anyone in NYC knows who Mullin is. When I wasn't even a St. John's or a basketball fan I knew who Mullin was. I didn't even know Eddie Jordan played basketball.

lol I was born in the 90s and know about Mullin.

The Redmen crack was uncalled for...Most articles have stated that Mullin is a risk, but the risk is worth it.
The biggest issues with

also doesn't even look like Danny Hurley was available, he was just using this opening as leverage to get a nice extension at URI, which I can't blame him for

Politi has no idea with regards to assistants or what this means to NYC or SJU. His perspective is strictly from the angle that SJU could have hired Hurley. No Hurley means no success. He has no clue outside of that perspective. He wouldn't know a SJU target or an SJU fan or Carnesecca arena if you drew him a map. Remember he just wrote an article about SHU and RU crying because they may lose Hurley to SJU. Now that is not going to happen thus his article today...

Absolutely right.
He's infatuated with the Hurleys, which is fine. But just recognize that's his only perspective.

He doesn't have a clue, and neither does anyone. Sometimes it works, like with Bird, and other times it's a disaster, like with Clyde Drexler. How Mullin handles recruiting will be pretty clear this Spring, but this debate is an empty argument on either side until he's coaching an actual game - something he's never done before.
-
Hope this staff pans out as rumored. Would be huge.

I understand that but you are giving him too much credit, it has nothing to do with thinking Mullin is a crapshoot. His entire article is about not hiring Hurley, period.

Would Slice still be an option to?

Politi obviously has some Hurley bias. Simple as that.
Also Hurley was available but wasn't 1st choice. Despite that he parlayed the threat of SJU into more money for himself at URI. Veteran move and great for him + staff. He would have been excellent choice as well.

I love the idea of Abdelmessih here. Great when our assistants have skin in the game so-to-speak. Hope it happens. Love when our assistants are also grads and fans like we are here. It's an X factor im every respect.

1. Rutgers guy reached a new level of idiocy, comparing Jordan to Mullin. Rutgers program is dead and Syracuse is not far behind.
2.Mullin brings instant credibility, plenty of PR, media coverage which helps recruiting
3. Im sure Mullin has given plenty of thought to his staff and, with his connections, it will be first rate
4. expect a fruitful April signing period

Nope. Plenty of time for it all to fall through.

One good thing for Chris is he won't have to waste any time watching game film of our team from this season as we will basically have a whole new team next season.

For every kid he will recruit there are parents/aunts and uncles/grandparents/handlers who all know who Chris is and think about what it will be like for them when Chris walks into their home and what they will say to their kids that Chris is recruiting
-
Yep. Plus every kid is capable of googling their potential coach.
All they need to do is Google or Youtube Chris Mullin.
Watched a video last night where Mark Jackson claims the only reason he ever played in the NBA is because of Chris Mullin. Who was his teammate.
-
question: is there a formal 'hand-off' from previous staff with new staff? for example, handover of potential recruit information, etc.

Lot of coverage in the Daily News today including the backpage and a Lupica article.
-
I don't know how to do links, but Jersey Record is reporting P.J. as first assistant. Not sure if they can afford that.
If they want to be the best then they better get the best, to get the best you better pay up.
Mullin came here to win a NC and nothing less. If you think he took the job just to have SJU as a contender every year, then you are badly mistaken.

I haven't seen it mentioned, but will the assistants go with Lavin if he heads out west? Or is it too obvious - they will head out for sure simply to have a AC job?

The only one kind of in a bad spot is Hines
I wonder if he stays to take a local job or try to get in with the Nets or Knicks

Here he comes!
@FisolaNYDN: Chris Mullin is apparently arriving in New York tomorrow. All these years later the kid from Brooklyn is finally coming home. Just awesome.

Frank Isola @FisolaNYDN
Someone get Isaiah Briscoe on the phone and tell him Chris Mullin is coming home. With due respect to Coach Cal, you get everybody.
