SJU offered Gibbs today

Temple says SJU is now at the top of his list:
On Saturday, as part of University Service Day, the Red Storm men's and women's basketball programs held their fourth annual Dribble for the Cure event to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research. Gibbs said, on an invitation from St. John's men's basketball head coach Steve Lavin, he took an unofficial visit to the Queens, N.Y. campus.
"I met with Coach Lavin and the whole coaching staff," Gibbs told RedStormReport.com. "I got to walk around a little bit, saw a little bit of the campus -- it was a great time. I really liked it. I love the atmosphere. It was really family-oriented and I feel like I can definitely see myself there."
When asked where St. John's is ranked among the programs that have offered him, Gibbs said that the Storm are "definitely at the top of my list."
"There's been some other BIG EAST schools that have offered me, but St. John's is close enough to where I can get home in the day but also further enough where I feel like I'm on my own," he added.
Lavin let the 2016 recruit know immediately what role he could be expected to play should he choose to lace up as a member of the Johnnies.
"He told me that they graduate six guards this coming year so he said that I would definitely have a chance at coming in and playing," said Gibbs. "He also told me how he likes the way that I score but I can also pass the ball and that he wanted me to be a scoring point guard."
Gibbs is no stranger to the current hardwood movers and shakers at St. John's, as he mentioned his like for senior guard D'Angelo Harrison's role, game and dependability among his teammates and coaching staff.
"Obviously, D'Angelo is their leading scorer last year," said Gibbs. "He was their go-to-guy, and that's something that I would really like to be for a team like that; just somebody that they count on for the last bucket or I'm taking the last shot."

That was a great read. Kid seems like he has his head on straight. Would love to have him here in a couple years.

Anyone know if theres a chance he could be a 2015 kid? I know a lot of players reclassify these days and im just curious. Maybe him and Briscoe in the same class?
-
St. John’s is losing a slew of guards after this year and is recruiting both Gibbs in 2016 and his Playaz teammate Isaiah Briscoe for 2015. Briscoe just picked up a Kentucky offer on his visit there.
Could they join forces in Queens?
“That’s always a possibility,” Gibbs said. “Isaiah is one of my close friends. He was a teammate this year. We have great camaraderie and he’s someone that I really grew up with as a young kid. WE never really got to play together, I always played against him and this one year has really opened my eyes to the type of player he is and I think that we could both be successful on the same team.”
Asked how Kentucky might factor in for Briscoe, Gibbs said, “You never know with Isaiah. He’s a one-of-a-kind type of kid.”

It will hopefully be nice to edge Big Ed on this head to head battle;
@J_Schneider: Providence making a push with SHP guard T.J. Gibbs. Coach Ed Cooley stopped in to visit with him yesterday #NJhoops

I will be shocked if he doesn't end up at SHU, he will have a chance to play with his brother their and the family likes SHU a lot.

Wont sterling be gone by then?

Just saw this before I replied. For whatever reason this site never defaults to the last page for me it always go to a page or two back.

He is two years behind Sterling. One of those years Sterling redshired for transferring.
Also if you read the Zags and Rivals pieces it doesn't sound like he has any interest in following his brothers with regards to schools.
-
I don't know if he wants to follow his brother or not but he did say tha we are in the lead after we offered. Also, since going away didn't work out for his brother, he might not be as eager to do so as many other kids do.

The site jumps to the first post you didn't read, in other words the oldest post you didn't read allowing you to catch up to the conversation in order. I like that but yes sometimes you didn't read something 12 hours ago and want to comment and then realize later your comment was redundant. C'est la vie.

@NYPost_Brazille: Another St. John's offer has been made, to Seton Hall Prep junior guard TJ Gibbs, per source. #sjubb

@TheRecruitScoop
Notre Dame will conduct an in-home visit with 2016 New Jersey Playaz (NJ) guard Temple Gibbs tonight. He also has VCU & St. John's setup.

What?

Sorry Paultzman. Never mind. It was posted three weeks ago.

I'd love to get Gibbs to stay local. An excellent young PG with great pedigree. Gimme Gibbsor Ponds at the point spot, and plenty of good players will follow. I can only imagine a 1-3 of Gibbs, Alkins and Heron.

Yeah, everything I've heard is Notre Dame for Gibbs. It's why I think we should push a little harder on other targets like Ponds and others. No reason we should let Ponds leave NYC.

Fun style of basketball. Looks like Mullin is trying to bring that here.
-
Committed to Notre Dame
-
I know you can't keep them all, but this hurts, after visiting this Winter he proclaimed the Johnnies as his runaway favorite. Watching his tape and knowing his lineage, this is a major coup for Mike Brey and a big loss for the tri-state schools recruiting him.

Yes Baldi, but I've been hearing both brothers sterling and temple to Notre dame for a while. Sterling will likely head there too. It's why I said Ponds needs to be the local guard we should hit up.

Runaway favorite? I must have missed this every happening. He visited when we had Lavin and was offered by the new staff but not sure he ever even met Mullin. Every indication I heard was it was Notre Dame and we were never really in the mix. When you change staffs you have to expect to lose a few kids like we have. I think this is good he committed now so we can focus our 2016 attention elsewhere.
-
Notre Dame is loaded for the future. Vasturia, Demetrius Jackson both will be juniors. bonfire Colson a soph. Matt Ryan and Rex Pflueger coming in
-
They do need a big for 2016 though. But yes, Brey has them set for multiple ncaa runs.
-
Wouldn't be shocked if Ashton became grad assistant.

Brey killin it

Yea but cant hurt with family relationship. They need to replace Grant

At ND? That would certainly violate the 2 year rule at this point, no?

Don't think as a grad assistant it would. Hes his brother, not a coach per se. It wouldn't be a deal breaker anyway im assuming because Temple is already committed. And as far as it being a huge loss for us, he was never headed here and had been heavy Notre Dame lean for a long time. Plenty of other players out there, though Temple is a good one.

That was under a completely different staff though. The kid had zero relationship with our new staff. Mostly anything the old staff did gets thrown out the window. Look at Sampson, Doughty etc. Not saying we wouldn't have had a shot here but him enjoying his visit 6 months ago didn't mean much in long run, we haven't been mentioned with him much for a while.

Agreed; losing out on kids who have been recruited by different staffs for years is nothing to crow about. Mullin has had a bit over a month.
Losing out on a 2017 kid at this time next year is another thing.
-
Two things:
1)The previous staff was in tight with TJ for awhile especially when they were very much involved with Briscoe. It had definitely faded in the last few months prior to the new staff. In fact the BE school seemingly closest to him recently was Providence.
2)Assuming SJU lands Heron getting TJ was not going to be an option anyway. No way he comes with Heron likely to come as well.
-
Agreed, there was nothing this staff could have done, its just unfortunate that they weren't given the time to get involved. Larrier, Yawkwe, Heron, Shamorie, Diallo 2016 and Diarra, Sid Wilson 2017 are the early prime NYC targets IMO. I'd really like to extend an offer to Travis Aston too, but he'll likely settle for a go to role on a high mid major.

I heard staff is not seriously pursuing Shamorie.

Got to think the staff is confident elsewhere

Thanks Paultz, Salnave and Ponds are two kids who's names are only going to grow with time within the local circuit.

-
Not if we're capable of recruiting better guards nationally and internationally, but these two are going to run the PSAL over the next year.
-
If there's a reason staff isn't interested in Ponds, there's a reason. I trust the staff knows what they're doing.

Yes, unless Mullin's interview was just lip service to the local HS in the area.

Not what I was getting at.
We looked we kicked tires great.
But should we go after them when meanwhile Heron is better.
Just don't bow down to NY kid just because he's a NY kid.

I think the lack of interest in Ponds is that he's an undersized shooting guard. I don't think Mullin and staff have interest in shooting guards at his height and he hasn't shown any real PG instincts. Couple that with the fact that we are close with Heron who is an absolute monster SG and it makes sense.

Agree
Just don't want to hear the usual suspects crying that a recruit so close to home we aren't really pursuing.

Thought Ponds was a point. Video I saw looked like a scoring point. Heron definitly looks like a two. I too trust staff on recruiting so fell confident we will end up with talented players at every position.
