Expected matchups:
Bash/Bluiett
JSimon/Macura
Shamorie/Goodin
Tariq/Kanter
Marv/Marshall
Marshall has been playing very well lately, O'Mara is a tough matchup against Tariq once he comes off the bench, need Yakwe's tough defense to continue.
Students back on campus, 730 Central tip time agreeable for working fans, it'll be a packed house. Going to take a herculean effort to overcome this one. I expect the team to play their hearts out once again.
-
I expect Owens, Clark, and Simon to each have 2 fouls before they take their sweats off. Unlike MSG, other teams' home courts actually give them an edge in the calls.
-
Chances O'mara hits ten points? Shade under a hundred.
-
12 point dogs. After being competitive v Nova, I think we are due to be blown out. Xavier is so tough on the interior & those guys are good at kicking ball out for open 3s when doubled. Tough environment too.
-
Game did not even warrant a blurb in the printed edition of the NY Post today.
-
I agree... This game will be over by the 10 minute mark of the first half. I also think this will be the lowest point of the season because we will not be competitive for the first time. However, with that being said, this game will be spring board for win against Gtown.
Xavier 93
SJU 71
-
This team seems incapable of two contradictory things, being blown out and winning. Other than De Paul the games have been reasonably close. The team is like a golfer who cant make the crucial 6 footer.
-
SJU made Maric look like Sabonis. More of the same tonight as Kanter, OMeara and Jones will have their way. X men by a lot.
-

And short several clubs in the bag

This is because their is talent on the roster. We have high division 1 athletes. This isn’t Johnny Flynn beating up weaker players.

What a program! We alternate between competitive losses and blow out losses! Praise the lord!
-
Only chance of not losing tonight is if we got snowed in at LAG.
-

Maybe the staff isn't talking to Zach...

Too bad there are no ties in college basketball at least we could aspire to that.
-
macura baits someone (Tariq ?) into a near fight. Pat Driscol refing charges SJU with 3 fouls on the play - a personal, a tech and a tech on the bench. This springboards X to a 20 point victory.

That's what always beats us even in the 40 point blow outs, that damn refereeing.
-
Good luck guys. Hopefully we get a little enjoyment

#$%^ING REF SHOW 20 SECONDS INTO THE GAME LOLOLOL
-
On what team would Owens be shooting 3’s?
-
Can’t compete taking shots like that.
-
Simon bonehead play of the game 5 seconds in
-
This channel not high def?
-
Clark wtf was that
-
This channel not high def?
It sucks on Verizon
-
Ahmed is a stupid man
-

It sucks on Verizon
Ya same
-
This team has too much talent to suck this bad. Coaching.
-
What is Ahmed doing grabbing Macura when SJU has the ball going the other way.
Why would you wrap your arm around him when you have the ball going the other way that is just so stupid....
-
Lets just play basketball for fcks sake
-
This team has too much talent to suck this bad. Coaching.
I disagree. 1 player that would start on most other Big East teams
-
Another 3
-

CBS is worth like billions of dollars and they have these cameras is a disgrace.

This season sucks. I like simon

Wow they took it away...as Lappas said how can you call a foul, check the monitor for a flagrant, and take away the foul...

Coming in fine here.

Thought this was suppossed to be one of our better shooting teams. Oh that's right they're tired. 20 year olds tired in first 5 minutes of game. Sometimes I think some of you think our players are as old as our fans in the AARP and older age range.
-

I disagree. 1 player that would start on most other Big East teams
Ponds, Simon, Owens with better coaching would start for just about every BE team. Depth, and complete lack of strategy/coaching/discipline is why they are so bad.
-
Trimble!
-
Double post up at the foul line ?
-
One time just once can Yawke just handle a pass
-
Our guys are playing stupid. But they are playing hard.
-
My favorite thing is the few times we do run an offensive set that kind of works, it's for Yakwe
-
My favorite thing is the few times we do run an offensive set that kind of works, it's for Yakwe
That made me laugh
-
I like Kanters game
-
Yakwe forcing Kanter to go left. Ummm
-
Great hands by Yakwe on that rebound. Maybe he can play TE in the NFL after his college hoops career is over ala Antonio Gates.
-
Call timeout. And get Ponds back in
-
Trimble my boy
-
Trimble showing his value.
-
Xavier unconscious from 3 so far.
-
Call timeout. And get Ponds back in
Yeah . If he needs a break . Call a time out. Our coach should go to a middle school coaching clinic
-
Trimble showing his value.
Improving every game. Give him more minutes
-
AliB in. Look for lead to lengthen for X by about ten points by halftime.
-
Trimble showing his value.
You mean our D is unconscious?
-
Trimble showing his value.
Improving every game. Give him more minutes
I like him. Hope he stays.
-
Alibegovic is a hole
-
Clark last guy back on d every time. Needs to get in better shape
-
Trimble showing his value.
You mean our D is unconscious?
Ha! that too.
-
"That's a tough one for a guy shooting 19%"
-
"That's a tough one for a guy shooting 19%"
Coach don’t tell anybody NO
-
Keep driving the ball Ponds, they can't stay in front
-
Let's see what we run out of a timeout here
-
Keep driving the ball Ponds, they can't stay in front
There it is. All game, every game he should do that.
-
AYFKM!!??
-
Why no timeout and set a play for that last possession. Instead a falling 3 pointer
-
Why no timeout and set a play for that last possession. Instead a falling 3 pointer
I wouldn’t have wasted 2nd timeout. Mullin needs the timeouts to give rest. Which he won’t do.
-
Alibegovix cant get into any game you have an intention of winning. Don't care how thin our bench is.
-
This is the main place the staff loses my confidence. This team allows opponents to shoot 37% from 3. That is 266th out of 351 teams in the country. They allow opponents to shoot 43.6% from 2. That is 15th best in the country. Yet on defense they still overhelp off shooters and close out soft allowing them to shoot instead of making them put it on the floor and go past them. How many #$%^ing teams have to light us up from 3 for this to change?
-

No need for rest after down 10+

All of them

Does anyone on the staff advise Mullin during the game?

Who out of Bluiit, Kelan Martin, Mikal Bridges, Foster, Desi Rodriguez, and Alpha Diallo do you sit for Simon?
-
At some point it's not just "oh pity us because teams shoot the lights out against us". It's not an accident or dumb luck. You give good shooters open shots they will make them
-
Does anyone on the staff advise Mullin during the game?
Not even being a dxck, how can they ? None of them no what they are doing. We hit some shots. This game is about to get ugly.
-
What is Ponds doing letting the ball roll up the court with the clock running at the end of the half?

Simon might start on DePaul and Georgetown, other than that, I don't see it. He's our 2nd best player
-
Our 3 point defense just keeps getting better.
-
What is Ponds doing letting the ball roll up the court with the clock running at the end of the half?
Why does it matter? The inbounder rolled it and he let it go for two seconds at a pretty good speed.

Hmm, yes you are, pretty much every post actually.
team sucks
mullin sucks
asst coaches suck
university sucks
fans suck
etc, etc

I guess you missed "just about." Also, you realize there are 5 starters on each team, right?

Never underestimate Marillac. :)
-
Ponds hit a 3
-
The one time they miss an open 3 and you don't get the rebound....
-
Can't trade baskets....
-
Eventually they are going to have to get stops.
-
Simon has been good. If you like anything. It has to be him . Their are holes in his game. But he plays hard every game
-

Likewise nerd. Good call like your foul on Ponds in the Nova game. Watch it again...it had literally no effect on the play. They inbounded at 11 seconds and Ponds was at the three point line with six on the clock.
-
Macura having an off night
-
Maybe we have a game?
-
Maybe we have a game?
We always have a game.

You're a nice person, I will be nice again tomorrow, you will still be stupid...
-
They are playing hard....no doubt.
-
They can't get the key stop...everytime...3
-
Why the hell did Ponds help off Macura to help on a guy that didnt even have the ball?
-
Clark and Ahmed 1 rebound between them
-
Game did not even warrant a blurb in the printed edition of the NY Post today.
Maybe the staff isn't talking to Zach...
No game tweets from him...wonder if something going on or just coincidence
-
Nice midrange game from Marv tonight
-
It has to be all Ponds now.
-
Wow they have not missed a shot in the 2nd half...
-
Great pass Ponds
-
It has to be all Ponds now.
Good call after Simon just made 3 plays in a row...
-
That's a walk wtf
-
Clark and Ahmed 1 rebound between them
Bruise Brothers. Too bad they are the ones with the bruises.
-
It has to be all Ponds now.
Tell Ponds to play some defense
-
Would someone please set a legit screen for Pinds
-
Macura...killing SJU...
-
Would someone please set a legit screen for Pinds
Whose Pinds???
-
It has to be all Ponds now.
Good call after Simon just made 3 plays in a row...
He's too reckless. His points aren't sustainable in the half court in close games.
-
See what happens when you avoid taking bad shots early in the shot clock and look to attack the rim first. Best shot selection from this team in a while. Have to keep it up. But defend the 3 point line just once
-
Would someone please set a legit screen for Pinds
Whose Pinds???
IDK but I hope he is a better 3 point shooter than Ponds.
-
It has to be all Ponds now.

Great observation, should be benched
-
Gotta hit these 2 Pinds
-
Ponds could take it to the rim every play and something good would happen. They should have realized that after Saturday

You give our coach every benefit of the doubt. Seem very harsh on this kid. He has played well this season. He deserves better
-
Would someone please set a legit screen for Pinds
Whose Pinds???
Whose is possessive. You should have written "who is" or "who's." This is less than 20 minutes after calling someone else stupid.
-
Ponds is getting to the lane at will. He's too good. Two man game with Clark.
-
That's where Simon is at his best in the pick n roll.
-
Ponds got to finish that.
-
Ponds is getting to the lane at will. He's too good. Two man game with Clark.
Two missed layups by Ponds
-
Unacceptable not getting back on D. Get in better shape
-
How about a timeout
-
Ponds short arming shots. Looks tired.
-
Their should be no doubt their is talent on this team.
-
Man 3 LAY up opportunities first Clark then Ponds twice to get the lead to 5 and they can't convert...
They are owed some good luck...make some shots here last 7 minutes...
-
How about a timeout
One possession too late
-
Their should be no doubt their is talent on this team.

Yeah right; with virtually every player weighs less 200 lbs, they are really out of shape.
-

Gassed...no doubt...needed that TO
-

He ha s 2 left. Better use them wisely
-
Out of control
-
Ponds is getting to the lane at will. He's too good. Two man game with Clark.
Two missed layups by Ponds
He'was fouled on the second. He's playing a near perfect second half. They can't keep him out of the lane.
-
The ref was looking right at the ball go off Kanter.
-
2nd chance points killing us. Difference in the game. Lack of rebounding.
-
Ballgame...man...
-
Unacceptable not getting back on D. Get in better shape
Yeah right; with virtually every player weighs less 200 lbs, they are really out of shape.
Who said anything about weight?

Ponds looks a little fatigued. Mullin should give him a quick breather here til the under 4 timeout

Teribble call.
-

Weird to be posting Cosby memes
-
Ponds pushes off all the time on the offensive end, especially when he has the ball. Surprised it took them so long to call it
-
Has ponds become a black hole?
-
Simon on the bus already?
-
It's over...again good effort haven't quit but 0-7.
-
Ponds killing us. Can't keep blowing layups 5-17 from the field.
Are you insane? Where are the rebounds? The whole defense goes with Ponds! Those are tailor made out backs.
-
If you have watched Simon play and think he'd only start on 3 BE teams, you're not a very educated basketball fan. SJU has a depth and coaching problem. And a lot of bad luck. That's why they are 0-7.
-
First Nova, now Xavier. Similar type of games. The team stays relatively close but never really has a shot to win.
-
Nice effort. However one team makes winning plays, and one team doesn't. Need to convert layups and need to do little things.
-

No one should be talking about effort. They're 0-7. Who cares. Win even a single game, this is a joke.

LMAO, so can't blame Ponds for shooting less than 30% from field because he's creating offensive rebound opportunities. You so crazy!!!
-
Those offensive rebounds by Xavier and easy putbacks every time! Killers!
-
First Nova, now Xavier. Similar type of games. The team stays relatively close but never really has a shot to win.
Disagree. They trailed the entire 2nd half against Nova.
Here they actually had the lead and the ball couple of times in the 2nd half...
This was more Creighton...
-
Lovett doesn’t quit and we win this game.
-
These refs pay no mind to Mullin

I sit behind the bench most games . Mullin is relentless with the refs. He gets crazy respect because of who he is. He doesn’t work them . He annoys them . They turn him off.
-
Lovett doesn’t quit and we win this game.
Or WE have 1 of either Mussini or Ellison
Both would've been huge this season.
-
Mullin really needs to do a better job when it comes to substitutions. Need to buy a few minutes for each kid. Use the media timeouts as your friend. Sit a guy like Shamorie right before it as it gives him an extended rest. Can't just leave the same 5 in for the whole game, no matter how well they're playing. When depth is in an issue, have to play the bench guys in 2-4 minute spurts. Team was gassed with 7 minutes left...
-
If they give same effort on Saturday they will beat Georgetown...no doubt.
If they don't beat Georgetown then 1-17 is in play...
No doubt? No. This team is cursed. I fully expect to lose to GTown regardless of the effort.
-
Good effort, unfortunately bad teams find ways to lose. They play well on offense but can’t stop the 3. Team will get some wins, but gonna be tough.

Disagree a little. He gets killed everytime he puts in Ali and then when they are gassed we complain. Can't have it both ways...
Killer is Ahmed is so up and down and he can't trust Yakwe...

He's too reckless. His points aren't sustainable in the half court in close games.
You have gone insane!!!!!!

Disagree a little. He gets killed everytime he puts in Ali and then when they are gassed we complain. Can't have it both ways...
Killer is Ahmed is so up and down and he can't trust Yakwe...
Yakwe isn’t terrible. He could be hidden for a few minutes
Exactly. I understand why he wouldn't want to put Amar out there. But a game like tonight (where no one was really in foul trouble), you could have bought a few minutes from Yakwe. Agree that Ahmed being inconsistent is a killer though.
-
Depth and another shooter hurt us here. Lovett would have been nice this game. Great effort against a good team.
I know he is on the perimeter on offense but you think Clark could get 3 or 4 rebounds on accident.
Ahmed when bad is a disaster.
Ponds bad night wasn't because of his shooting problems as he hit a better % than he normally does. Those are tough drives and at his frame sometimes going to struggle. Also thought he got hit a few times. He is going to have to knock down some shots because they are playing off him now.
I know he had a career game shooting and turnover prone but as I have said all year Simon is really fun to watch. What we all wanted Reggie Jessie and Ellison to be.
Keep hanging close and losing takes a toll, but I think we beat Gtown.
-
8-35
-
Guess not much they can do with what they have but rebounding and 3 point defense killing this team.
Out rebounded 39-21
3-point shooting defense 54% (14 treys)
-
8-35
Their were some positives. The guys played hard. Still we took bad shots. Gave up easy shots. And didn’t rebound. This looked like norms boys playing hard and losing, like always.
8-35, 9 in a row
-
Ponds could take it to the rim every play and something good would happen. They should have realized that after Saturday
It’s why we shouldn’t have these droughts that kill us. Mullin needs to recognize the drought and call for drives. All of our guys are capable of drawing fouls. Get to the line. Drought breaker
-
Man 3 LAY up opportunities first Clark then Ponds twice to get the lead to 5 and they can't convert...
They are owed some good luck...make some shots here last 7 minutes...
Clark misses just about every layup opportunity.
-
These refs pay no mind to Mullin
He pretty much has chirped his way onto the pay no mind list.
-

Lack of fundamentals on defense. Plain and simple. Team in 3 years under Mullin is still bad on defense. No other way to put it. This is where numbers lie. Team is number one in scoring defense in league, but have given up under 70 once in league play and over last 3 games, teams have scored 10 more points in each game. The 3 point shooting has killed sju under Mullin and until he figures out how to get his team better in that category, losses will mount and record will stink.
-
-21:5 assist to turnover ratio, 15 caused turnovers, and a major breakthrough in press defense are all very promising.
-Being out rebounded by 16 and giving up 14 3's for a +50% yet again is more of the same.
-These kids resiliency and refusal to give into their record is inspiring and makes me as a STH proud & looking forward to Saturday.
-Within the past 5 days they've tied #1 Nova and beat #11 X by 2 in the 2nd half. Soon enough they'll play a full 40, I think it happens this wknd.
-Once Justin masters his shooting stroke he'll be the face of the program. Shamorie continues to mature with his shot selection yet his lapses tonight in the final 10 minutes of the second half cost them the game. Attrition playing a huge part again. Trimble night by night is coming along just fine, I want him to stay in the program and continue to grow.
-This Winter has been brutal. However this team is starting to find itself again sans Marcus. The 82 points tonight is the team's highest total since December 2nd (Sacred Heart) and ties it's 2nd highest output this season.

Ok it's official. My new Mfp is Justin Simon!

"Reckless" Simon - 28pts / 9reb /6ast / 3stl / 2to
Simon had the game of his life. He made hideous shot after hideous shot. That's just not sustainable with his form. His floaters look horrendous and he hit about 8 jumpers. Dom Pointer had games he couldn't miss as well. That is not a formula for success
Ponds was unreal for the first 13-14 minutes of the second half, but I'll admit he was awful to end it. Just really bad.
It's very discouraging how poorly our guys hit the offensive glass. Five offensive boards?! Everyone follows Ponds on his drives and leaves a clear lane for our guys to sneak in for easy putbacks, but nobody is ever there. How is that possible?
-
We are short an outside shooter and a big-bodied rebounder. Even so, with LoVett we would have run Xavier ragged tonight. Tough to play nearly 40 minutes against waves of fresh bodies off the bench. Nice stretch to get back in the game in the second half and take a lead, but that level of effort is unsustainable when playing a ranked team that is undefeated at home with a full bench and extra bigs to throw at us.
-
8-35

Actually, it’s 7 losses in a row, but we’ll get there.
Zero boxing out. We worked for every point we scored. We gave Xavier half their points for free. Never in my wildest imagination did I think it would be possible that we would have a coach worse than Norm Roberts. But St.John’s has done it.

We played freshman defense. Fell for every ball fake, lost every shooter and again didn’t bother to box out. The last time we had a coach with upperclassmen this clueless we wanted him fired.

I think Brian Fantana should take this one:
"Take it easy, Champ. Why don't you sit this next one out, stop talking for a while. "

I know you have recently gone cuckoo for coco puffs and all and really don't mean to add on but I feel my friend Stat Sheet needs to stop being ignored. Ponds shooting 39% overall compared to 47% for Clark. Now yes Ponds is better, takes tougher shots and Clark's rebounding is downright embarrassing, but you simply have to stop making things up to downgrade other guys to make Ponds look better.
Ponds is our best player and very good. He has not had the year he or us expected and that is part of the problem. He said as much a couple weeks ago. W/o Ponds we stink. We all get it but he also has to play better next year if we are to be decent and if he has any pro aspirations. He gets lazy on D and he is going to have to make an outside shot every once in awhile to keep defenses honest.

Add this to his rebounding woes and it seems Mr. Clark has an aversion to the basket and the backboard or maybe he is just allergic to them.

I agree that they are progressing and learning to play without Lovett. I think exhaustion is a problem and think that CM should use timeouts to rest players, excepting of course when the opposition is on a serious run. I see some wins coming up.

1. Lovett
2. Lack of depth / zombie Yakwe
3. Lack of toughness / rebounding from Clark
4. Ponds outside shooting

Xavier - St John's recap http://www.bigeastboards.com/
Enjoyable as always.
Not sure how I missed the whole mailbox thing but don't remember that. That is pretty crazy.
See I met a bunch of posters at a BEB thing awhile back and it was nice and all but I think I like it better not knowing everyone's real identity.
For instance I picture you looking like a cross between Joe Walsh, Elmore Leonard and Larry David.
Masejr I picture looking like the kid from the Goldberg's TV show
Paultz-Mike Vaccaro. In fact I think he might be Mike Vaccaro.
Tony-Steve Lavin. In fact I think he might be Steve Lavin
Fordham-Like the old guy in UP. The guy with the balloons.
-
I picture you looking like a cross between Joe Walsh, Elmore Leonard and Larry David.
Oh come on, I'm much better looking than that. A virile six feet - not too short not too tall - a manly beard, full head of short cropped salt and pepper hair, distinguished gray temples. Picture George Clooney, add 30 pound and put him in gray sweat pants and a stained white tee shirt.

Figured you had that angry, eccentric genius look going. Kurt Vonnegut maybe. You know 1970's college professor thing. Tweed jacket , smoking a pipe and drinking a scotch. Don't ruin it for me. Was bad enough when I met Baldi and he didn't look like Sen John Blutarsky. Though in fairness was not that far off on that one.
I forgot Poison in earlier post. In my head he looks like Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon for some reason.

Agreed. There was a lack of awareness on the defensive glass from everyone. Mullin isn't teaching his players fundamentals, or if he is, they aren't listening to him. Last night should have showed every fan of this program that the team just doesn't have a plan.

Last night they played the #11 team in the country to a draw for 35 minutes. It didn't show anyone anything they didn't already know
You didn't like the Mullin hire two years ago, you still don't like it. Fine. Don't pretend that every game is an epiphany. Because it's not.
-
A few things are absolutely clear:
- The team does not box out
- Few picks are set for Ponds or Simon and no pick and rolls
- There are few offensive plays set up to get someone open
- everyone always drops off their man to try to help out in the middle, regardless of how many threes their man is making. Maybe they should try not dropping off the hot man.
- They need to hire an assistant coach to address the above issues
-
And few baseline and foulline extended off-the-ball screens, an excellent way to get some good looks inside and out.

As great as Walden was against Nova - Garfunkel was just as great against Xavier. If we could ever get our 1 and new 2 going at the same time we might win a game.
