St. John's will be throwing a pep rally on campus next week Thurs the 25th.
It will be held in Taftner Field House for both the Women's and Men's team. Something that is interesting is that it is only for students so now alumni or non student fans will be granted access.
Guest List to my knowledge Includes:
Howie Schwab- The host of the night
Mark Jackson?
Lance Stephenson?
? = rumored
This is what the invitation that the student organization sent out....
Men's and Women's Basketball Showcase
Free Food
Dunk Contest
Guest Emcee ESPN's Stump the Schwab
Post Event Autograph Session
and...
Student Contests UP TO $30,000 IN PRIZES!!!
Free for students with valid Storm Card!
Get there early, space is limited!
I have a few issues with this...why only students? Also this would be so much better in CA but obviously it isn't ready. Dunk contest didn't we learn with Maybank? I wonder if they'll make a me judge for the dunk contest again?
-
JJ will you be going even though its only for students? Do we have any current students on the board that will be attending and willing to give a recap?
-
Make you judge? Were you forced the last time :)
From what I'm told, Lance and family should be there.
Expect a lot of other recruits there as well.
-
JJ better use his influence to help let non-students in. The last Stormfest was one of Norm's better ideas.
If Lance's documentary crew gets in, Marco Baldi may protest.
-
it's weak not to allow alums in. i'm sure it's concerns about space since CA obviously won't be ready in time.
hopefully, next year, their acts will be together.

LOL I actually was because they had no one. I worked in athletics at the time. I gave Maybank a zero and felt like a jerk for it afterwards.

I am planning on attending
-
I see nothing wrong with a dunk contest...freak accidents could happen at anytime. Let the kids/students have some fun.
-
Marco Baldi will be signing his new book "The Ownage of Posters" at ths event. Lance and his posse get a free copy.
-
the gym isn't complete so it's a numbers thing

Im not familiar with taffner. where will people be able to sit during this?

They have signs and flyers all around, and it's also on the main St. John's Central Page as this banner

I haven't really heard any buzz about it yet but then again they only started advertising it Tuesday. Signs are everywhere you look though so I see no reason why the students shouldn't be into it.

Is that really how you spell emcee? I thought it was MC.
-
the kids these days and their spellings. MC is supposed to be for Master of Ceremonies. I suppose if you're talking about a performer, who, with a DJ is not the sole master of ceremonies the "emcee" selling is okay, but really. M! C!
-
i may meet with a st john's rep today, so i'll ask him/her if there really is student pride. lol
-
I am told that StormFest is open to all - not just to students.

Lance to Visit St. John’s Thursday (Updated)
Posted on Sep 19, 2008 9:14 am
Fresh off an in-home visit last week with St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts, Lance Stephenson will visit St. John’s Thursday for the 2008 Red Storm Tip-Off, according to sources close to the situation.
The event will run from 5:45-8 and will serve as St. John’s Midnight Madness event. It is open to students and the media, but not the general public. There will be a free student BBQ and the men’s and women’s teams will be introduced. Both Roberts and women’s coach Kim Barnes-Arrico will speak to the fans, and both teams will then scrimmage.
Other recruits will also attend, as well as members of the current recruiting class, including South Kent standout Omari Lawrence.
As for the 6-5 Stephenson, ZAGSBLOG broke the news earlier this week that Roberts and assistant Fred Quartlebaum had an in-home with the Stephensons last Thursday. He won’t decide until the spring, but St. John’s appears to have as strong a shot as anybody.
Having already locked up a recruiting class of Malik Stith and Omari Lawrence, Roberts has one scholarship remaining for the Class of 2009.
St. John’s is focusing on Stephenson, James Padgett and Jordan Williams. If the Johnnies were to land commitments from two of these players, they would need someone to leave the team in order to free up a scholarship.
Coach Roberts had an in-home visit with the 6-foot-8 Williams on Wednesday and Williams had previously said St. John’s had shown the most interest in him. He recently had an in-home visit with Coach Gary Williams of Maryland, and plans to visit there officially.
“I can tell you that I am going to take an official visit there [Maryland],†Williams told TerrapinTimes.com. “I am thinking about coming down for their Maryland Madness, since it sounds like that is also Homecoming Weekend and a lot will be going on. Right now, that is the tentative plan, but it’s possible I could visit before then. This process is just beginning in terms of home and official visits, and I am not ready to say anyone is leading at this point. But Maryland is definitely going to be in the mix.â€
As for the 6-7 Padgett, he had an in-home with Coach Roberts on Monday. The latest on him is that he will NOT take an official visit this weekend to Pitt, where Rice guard Durand Scott will be. Pitt just got a commitment from power forward J.J. Richardson of Pitt, meaning it could be out of the Padgett Sweepstakes.
Lincoln coach Dwayne “Tiny†Morton said coaches from Maryland and Villanova visited Padgett at school Thursday, and Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State will come in next week.

Now the same person who told me it was open to all is saying it may not be. Looks like he/I got it wrong, which would be a shame because I was planning on going.

2008 Red Storm Tip-Off To Open St. John's Basketball Seasons On Sept. 25
Student-only event featuring men's and women's hoops scrimmages, Red Storm dunk contest,
Sept. 19, 2008
QUEENS, N.Y. - Head men's coach Norm Roberts, head women's coach Kim Barnes Arico and the Red Storm men's and women's basketball teams invite all St. John's students to the 2008 Red Storm Tip-Off, a season-opening fan celebration scheduled for Sept. 25 at Taffner Field House. A free BBQ and fan fest open the festivities at 5:30 p.m. on the courts at Taffner, with on-court activities are set to begin shortly after.
ADMISSION IS FREE to all students who want to catch a sneak preview of the 2008-09 Red Storm basketball teams, win fantastic prizes or test their St. John's basketball smarts against special guest and 1982 grad Howie Schwab of ESPN's "Stump The Schwab." Members of both teams will be introduced, and Coach Roberts and Barnes Arico will address the student fans about the excitement of the upcoming season. Both teams will scrimmage as part of what is sure to be an outstanding evening of contests, prizes, giveaways and performances at St. John's Queens Campus.
A $30,000 shooting contest highlights the evening's many giveaways, with other prizes including tickets to the St. John's-Duke game at Madison Square Garden, Nike prize packs and apparel, Red Storm gear, gift certificates to the campus bookstore and much more.
Before the Red Storm Tip-Off begins, students will enjoy D.J. music, inflatable games, a free BBQ and giveaways from the Powerade Street Team. The festivities conclude with a slam dunk contest featuring members of the men's basketball team, and all students are invited to stick around for an afterparty featuring D.J. Flo and a step-exhibition by members of ALFSA, St. John's Greek life organization.
Four starters and 10 letterwinners return for Roberts and the Red Storm in 2008-09, including an All-BIG EAST honorable mention selection in senior Anthony Mason Jr. (14.0 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game), BIG EAST All-Rookie team member Justin Burrell (10.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg), sophomore guard-forward D.J. Kennedy (7.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and second-year point guard Malik Boothe (2.5 assists per game). The Red Storm men open their season on Friday, Nov. 14 when local squad LIU visits what will be a newly-renovated Carnesecca Arena.
Fresh off its quarterfinal appearance in the Postseason WNIT, its fifth-straight BIG EAST Tournament berth and an 18-15 record, Barnes Arico and the women's basketball team open their preseason slate on Nov. 6 against the X All-Stars at Carnesecca Arena at 7 p.m. The women return their leading scorer in second team All-Met (MBWA) selection Monique McLean (14.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and third-leading scorer in 2008 BIG EAST All-Freshman team selection Sky Lindsay (8.5 ppg). Seniors Kelly McManmon (7.6 ppg) and Kristin Moore (.625 FG pct), and juniors Joy McCorvey (5.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Aricia Mitchell (4.6 ppg) are among the Red Storm's top returnees.

Students just don't care....
On facebook I helped out the school invite more people....
672 people still awaiting reply.
373 said Maybe Attending.
343 said Yes they Will be Attending.
but
569 said NO they Won't be Attending.
Also you have to figure about 50% of the people who said yes will actually attend and maybe about 10-25% of the maybe's will attend.
Also I invited about 1,000 people for the school if I were them I'd would have invited about 10,000 to the event not just matching my 1,000.

Your father teaches at the University and you're considering going elsewhere. You aren't any better.
-
but isn't the turnout usally bad I mean it is a city school so kids can find other things to do and some don't live on campus

or maybe it's because i want to get away from NYC and that some schools (seton hall, syracuse) have better communications programs.
if i go to st john's i will support the team like crazy.

i don't buy that. the drinking age is 21 so that eliminates a number of options. the school is offering free food and a chance to get out and enjoy a fun event.
the school paper. the greeks and other clubs should be out in force.
weak.
-
Some teachers should just bring their classes to the event

This is classic St. John's here for you. Things like this were very typical during my years of undergrad and I see nothing is changing. I hear people want change, they are doing more, they want to pump up student interest with the basketball team, etc.
Well on the Thursday the 25th(same day as the tip-off) the African Students Association(ASA) is hosting an event right by student housing outside on the basketball courts by Montgoris dining hall directly overlapping the time of the pep rally.
3-on-3 Tournament- First 8 teams to sign up get to play $200 cash PRIZE!
Dunk contest- First 10 people to sign up get to play
$50 cash PRIZE!
FREE REGISTRATION
Sign up with your team of (3 or 4) at the campus concierge located in the lobby of the Library
or email asa.stjohns@gmail.com to register your team.
Registration deadline is Sept 24th
For more info contact asa.stjohns@gmail.com
MUSIC BY DJ ZEKE "THE GO TO KID"
I guarantee this has double the attendance of the pep rally. Also people will be outside all afternoon watching this 3 on 3 tourney as they will hear music from their room and wonder what is going on, will see it on their way to/from class, sit outside hang out watch the tourney or girls walking by and socialize, watch the dunk contest after, say to themselves gee I'm hungry let me go to the dining hall I'm standing right outside in front of, eat, say they're tired, walk back to their dorm, sit on the crapper for 20 min, study/watch tv/play video games etc.
Not once will they think about the pep rally as their attention was completely taken away or their energy is drained and they are too lazy to go to this after. How does the school even allow this to happen?
-
If this is the DJ Zeke that I think it is, then it'll be none other than Isiah Thomas' son playing the music.

lesson learned. maybe they should coordinate with the student groups before setting up a program. a wrap up of the 3 on 3 tournament could have been held in taffner before the basketball team program...with the dj and other stuff tied in.
i know FH doesn't like that "culture"...but it is what it is.
-
Ahhh it actually seems like it'll be a different DJ Zeke. Isiah's son is also a part time DJ and calls himself DJ Zeke
-

What "culture" doesn't he like, a winning one
or a DJ, some dancing, and a little 3 on 3?

None of the people pictured above have any control over the African Student Association and this would fall under the event cooridinator or campus life. The event is completely counter productive to the pep rally. I posted something on the ASA bulletin for the event asking if they considered the pep rally but it was quickly deleted.

that just goes to show how little weight the basketball program carries @ St. John's these days....

I wouldn't say that but rather how poorly things are put together and planned. You need to gain approval to have events on campus through campus life and I think its pretty insensitive that the ASA was granted permission to hold the event.
-
I'm working on that right now jj
-
Just got back from a class and on every door in my hall there is a flyer for the event and tonight there is a special event with giveaways pizaa and special guests in the Hollis Hall 2nd floor lounge sponsored by the Redzone student section.

Teams are already signing player in 2014 class & we are focusing 2009 it is a dam shame
We are 4-5 years behind ::)

We're not 4-5 years behind.
Most programs are still working on their 2009 class and targeting their 2010 class.
Including Lance, that's a good group, JJ.
We'll need some space available to take more than 1-2 of those kids.
Good luck, KOB

No 2011s? Mike Poole in the house, as well? I hope you'll be getting some interviews in/ shout outs in. Or an ID for the Jungle podcast.

If they are on an unofficial/official visit it is against NCAA rules for me to talk to them at the event.

Alot of 2011 players are gonna be there sterling Gibbs and kabongo is for sure

Did not know that - are you treated like a booster, then?! Is it an affiliation with the school why you can't talk to them?
And Gibbs and Kabongo? NICE.

Fans Can Catch Live Video Of 2008 Red Storm Tip-Off On RedStormSports.com, is this only live video? Or can I catch it on demand? Because I am not sure if Prof. Nugent will let us out at a descent time , they should force all night SPM classes to go

i know for a fact it's wrong to give them envelopes stuffed with cash.
talking is another story.

I'm not 100% certain if its an NCAA rule or just St. John's policy but media can have no interaction with a potential student athlete while they are on campus grounds for an unofficial or official visit. I'm sure Theo can comment and shed some light on this too.
-
it would have to be st john's policy.
also, the internet would have to be considered "media"...but would that policy apply to it...or solely to newspapers, tv and/or radio...the traditional media as we know it?
-
I've been told that it is against NCAA policy for credentialed media members to speak with recruits while on campus. Not 100% sure, but that is what I have been told in the past.
-
I should add that I will be there as well on Thursday evening. Really looking forward to it.

A fan site that has no specific affiliation to the University is considered "media"
So if I went out and started the site "number1SJUfan.com" tomorrow. . I would be considered media in the eyes of the school and/or NCAA..?

Please don't try and diminish or slight what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm trying to do a lot of good for the University as well as the students who can gain professional experience by working for Johnny Jungle. There are so many positive opportunities I'm trying to create and by getting more access I can accomplish so much more. Its a fine line and I'm working very hard to cross it. This is a small step in the right direction and I'm very thankful for the opportunity.

Great job JJ, dont let the man keep you down
-
Nice job JJ! Let's hope there is a great turnout. Keep up the good work.
-
I think it's unfair to categorize certain sites as "fan sites" or "news sites," and I think this site brings some things in both of those categories. Having access is important for sites that are LEGITIMATE. I think that is the key word. As "blogs," and "fan sites" have become more and more popular and traditional media is diminishing, I think it's going to be a judgement call for people to determine what is legitimate and what isn't. JJ does a lot of work on this site and there are certainly news providing areas of it.
-
So after stormfest, the coaches can have full practices with the team? Or individual workouts? What's the limit on their contact with the players?

i'm watching on stormtracker from a hotel but i will provide as good a play by play that i can if you guys want. the dunk contest is yet to come and the scrimmage apparently is only 4 minutes if i heard the announcers correctly.
-
thanks for he info. keep it comming
-
That would be great! At work but would love to get whatever details you can provide. Thanks!
-
students beat the coaches 20-14 in a 3 on 3 scrimmage. Norm can still play a LITTLE bit. Mason Jr was doing the color commentary here on stormtracker, pretty good stuff he got into it a little bit, very personable and not shy.
mason said that even though he's in it, paris horne is the guy to beat in the dunk contest and referenced his dunk we've all seen from delaware when he jumped over a kid, told us all to check it out on youtube.
-
coaches jus got housed by students in 3 on 3. coach norm and singleton got schooled!
-
womens scrimmage up first in a few minutes. i think it's four minute halves for each scrimmage.
-
is it crowded?
-
doesnt look that crowded, but it is in taffner not carnesecca. the announcers said they were hoping for about 1000 students. tough to get a read on it. apparently the dunk contest is mason, burrell, paris and one student.

doesnt look that crowded, but it is in taffner not carnesecca. the announcers said they were hoping for about 1000 students. tough to get a read on it. apparently the dunk contest is mason, burrell, paris and one student.
If you are watching the video broadcast you can't see the students there is a good turnout

Ton of recruits in the house
Lance?
Yes - he's there from what I'm told.

Good to hear. More importantly, how do their games look?
-
games had not started yet at the time of my post but its halftime now. honestly, you can't tell ANYTHING from this scrimmage. there is NO defense, which to an extent I expected but its tough to get a read on anything. roberts is on during the game, he said he didnt want defense here just run up and down and have fun. interesting notes...
burrell hit a 3 pter
boothe almost had a nice dunk, wow can he get up
rob thomas lost 19 pounds (norm said)
coker lost 22 pounds (norm said)
edmondson and wait both look pretty athletic , boothe also hit a 3, so did dj
-
mase? horne? anything else? thanks
-
what are the teams??
-
both mase and horne have had some real nice dunks on alley oops. roberts was avoiding the question like the plague of who his backup point guard will be. did have some nice things to say about edmondson, says he sees him as a combo guard.
per roberts, wait is now at 256 pounds and has gained 9 lbs since being on campus. phil wait with a DEEP jumper over rob thomas, wow

Most important question of the night!!!

Back from StormFest. There will be articles on NYCHoops.net and RedStormReport in the next few days on it. First off, it was great to sit next to and finally meet the great JJ himself. I thought the event went VERY well for St. John's. There were 15 (yes, 15) recruits there taking in the event. Lance brought his mother and father, which is a good sign for SJU IMO because usually it's just his father at events..and yes, there were Lance chants.
-
Nice job fellas, thanks. Were the recruits sitting with each other or scattered?
-
From zagsblog
Other recruits to attend the event included Jarrid Famous, the 6-10 center from Westchester Community College who is making an official visit to Seton Hall this weekend; Ashton Pankey, Devon Collier and Derrick Williams from St. Anthony, JayVaughn Pinkston and Branden Frazier from Bishop Loughlin; Sterling Gibbs from Seton Hall Prep; Joel Wright, David Coley and Davontay Grace from Thomas Jefferson; Joey De La Rosa and Sidike Johnson from St. Raymond’s in the Bronx; Jermaine Sanders from Rice; and Corey Edwards from Christ the King
-
I had fun it was way better than last years. And the students stayed and partied in taffner after the event was over. Man if I wasn't involved it would have been "awesome time" for me some of those "students" was looking good
***I had to hop in and edit what you said I agree with however we can't say that

St. John's Holds 2008 Red Storm Tip-Off
Students and fans treated to sneak preview of 2008-09 teams.
Sept. 25, 2008
2008 Red Storm Tip-Off Photo Gallery
QUEENS, N.Y. - Nearly 1,200 St. John's students and Red Storm basketball fans attended the 2008 Red Storm Tip-Off held at Taffner Field House on Thursday night. Those in attendance were treated to an early look at both the men's and women's basketball teams and a night full of contests and activities. In addition to the sneak preview of the 2008-09 basketball teams, fans were invited to test their St. John's basketball knowledge against special guest and 1982 grad Howie Schwab of ESPN's "Stump The Schwab."
After an introduction by head women's coach Kim Barnes Arico, the women's team delighted fans with a dance routine before holding an intrasquad scrimmage. Head men's coach Norm Roberts then took to the court and introduced his squad. The men took to the court for what proved to be an exhibition of fast breaks and slam dunks.
Anthony Mason Jr. then beat out teammates Paris Horne and Justin Burrell to win the slam dunk contest. The contest featured Kristin Moore, Joy McCorvey and Monique McLean of the women's team and Schwab as guest judges.
One lucky fan won four tickets to the St. John's game against Duke as well as dinner for four at The ESPN Zone in Times Square after correctly answering The Schwab's trivia questions. Another fan had the opportunity to win $30,000 in a shooting contest, while many other fans brought home Nike prize packs and apparel, Red Storm gear and gift certificates to the campus bookstore.
Before the Red Storm Tip-Off began, fans enjoyed D.J. music, inflatable games, a free BBQ and giveaways from the Powerade Street Team. Fans were invited to stick around following the event for an afterparty featuring D.J.
Fresh off its quarterfinal appearance in the Postseason WNIT, its fifth-straight BIG EAST Tournament berth and an 18-15 record, Barnes Arico and the women's basketball team open its season on Nov. 14 against Northeastern at Carnesecca Arena.

Johnnies tying to lure Stephenson
September 25, 2008
St. John’s is doing everything it can to lure ballyhooed shooting guard Lance Stephenson to Fresh Meadows, and it rolled out the red carpet for the top prospect at this evening’s Midnight Madness event at Taffner Fieldhouse.
Nearly every top area high school standout showed up, but Stephenson was easily the most visible. Most of the other potential Johnnies stood or walked around during the scrimmage, but Stephenson sat near the front row with his mom and dad. Anthony Mason Jr. sat down next to him after an intrasquad scrimmage, and Stephenson and his parents conversed with Norm Roberts and his staff throughout the evening.
At one point, the crowd chanted for him, begging him to commit to St. John’s.
“If I was Lance, I would have committed here (right now),†said Johnnies guard Malik Boothe, making his own recruiting pitch. “Because if the fans were yelling at me that they wanted me …â€
Stephenson, however, remained noncommittal about his interest in the Johnnies. He didn’t say whether the Red Storm’s Midnight Madness had pushed St. John’s up on his list, but he told the Daily News he liked some of the improvements that the school is making to its facilities and said he enjoyed the event.
“It was nice,†he said. “I liked it.â€
The Red Storm seem to have a decent shot at Stephenson, and they’re also making headway with a handful of other local prospects. Top JUCO big man Jarrid Famous said the Johnnies are “in my top 10â€, and Loughlin forward Jayvaughn Pinkston, a top target for 2010, said he likes the location of the school.
“It’s close to home,†he said. “And they want me as a three (small forward.)â€
Touted forwards Ashton Pankey, Devon Collier and Derrick Williams also attended the event, as did Class of 2011 point guard prospects Sterling Gibbs and Corey Edwards.

A couple questions JJ ... Do you think Wait will be able to contribute this year and to what extent and secondly why is backup pg such a concern to you? Did edmonson and roberts not look good in the open floor with the ball?

JJ please if you can expand your comments on Wait. Will he help this year?? Is he ahead of Tomas?? I saw him 3 years ago at Proctor and thought he was Big East recruitable because of his hands and shooting touch. He needed lots of work on his body though..what do you think??
-
he won't help this year but he is better than tomas. And they need a back up point.
-
Whoaaaaa, hold on folks. This was a scrimmage in which absolutely NO defense was played so there is very little to nothing substantial that can be learned about the players other than their physical conditioning. Wait looked like he was in pretty decent shape and has added muscle to his frame.
-
I just got back home now I actually spent the night in NY. I will have a detailed write up on the site by morning.

i know i was shocked also. he only touched the rock a few times. but he got good hands. and lookd bigger/stronger than i thought. imo he playing quality minutes come big east play.

Yea they were joking around and Phil was crossing it over in between his legs and head bobbing very much and 1 style and he just popped a three right in his face swish and he ran back down the court dancing. He is a funny dude. Also this got Lance out of his seat laughing and cheering.
-
he isn't ready yet fellas trust me
-
he isn't ready yet fellas trust me
he aint ready fr primetime for sure. but i think guy with his skils n size can give sju minutes in thee post. like the ol saying goes- u cant teach height. he could help us by thge end of th year. jmho.
-
he isn't ready yet fellas trust me
I don't think he is ready to dominate but I think he is ready to contribute. After seeing Dele yesterday, not even oldred could over hype, and how good of shape he is in. He looks like a new person.
I think we see Coker/Burrell starting with Evans coming in off the bench. I think Wait contributes maybe 8-10 mpg but it shouldn't be a big drop off I think he can be productive when he is in there. If he adds size I think he can be a pretty good player in the Big East but right now he isn't strong enough to really board and get position in the post as effectively as others. I think he has potential though and he gets off the floor much better than Tomas. I don't think Tomas sees the hardwood this year.
-
Who would you compares Waits game to?
-
Who would you compares Waits game to?
Its tough to draw comparisons with what I saw yesterday especially like Theo said no one played defense except when they did a little trap when Burrell was playing PG. The game was fun and I think we got a really good group of guys who all like each other and hopefully that chemistry rolls off onto the court. I said it before I think Wait could have a career line like Aaron Gray. He didn't do too much his freshman year but steadily put on size and got better.
-
tomas is gonna see more minutes than phil. Phil is good he is gonna be very good next year. He is just not strong enough this year. All he can do right now is shoot the 10-15 footer and he has good hands but he isn't a good blocker right now and he is gonna get out muscled big time. But with the strength coach they have I have no doubt in my mind he is gonna be the starting center next year and dele will come off the bench. Wait has way more talent but u can't do much with out muscle at this level

They were rocking the jersey's backwards in that pic.
I thought all the guys looked bigger on Thursday and not bad big. They looked more like men then freshman boys except Edmondson.
