Was talking to a local high school coach this weekend...    he said the one world he keeps hearing about Harris is overrated...  everyone wants to see him put up numbers against high level competition...

Hopefully he silences his critics this summer...

made an unofficial visit yesterday per NBE Basketball Report

TOBIAS HARRIS TOUR STOP: ST. JOHN’S
Harris continues college campus tour with unofficial visit to SJU

Tobias Harris checked in on St. John’s and Norm Roberts’ program today as he made an unofficial visit to the Queens campus. Harris also has been to West Virginia and the University of Virginia in recent days, participating in their elite camps.

“Tobias…came away very impressed with what coach Norm Roberts is doing at St.John’s,” according to his father, Torrel Harris Sr. “Tobias stated to me it looks like coach Roberts is really trying his best to get St.John’s back to the elite level,” Mr. Harris informed the NBE Basketball Report.

St. John’s and West Virginia are far from the only Big East schools interested in the skills of the 2010 elite prospect. The 6-foot-8, 215 lb small forward from Half Hollows Hills West High School on Long Island (NY) received phone calls from Connecticut, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Louisville, Rutgers and Providence in addition to St. John’s and West Virginia shortly after college coaches were allowed to call on 2010 recruits beginning June 15th. Virginia, Maryland, NC State, Wake Forest, Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Memphis also placed calls as soon as they could.

But getting Tobias on campus was definitely a positive step for St. John’s and they strengthened their position with him according to his father, “The school is doing lots of construction to improve the lifestyle of the school.”

And, coach Roberts and his vision for his program also impressed the Harris family. “It seems like Coach Roberts has a great plan for his young team to improve each day in order for St. John’s University to get to that next level,” Mr. Harris remarked.

The stop at St. John’s and the trip to WVU is all part of a Busy Summer for Harris(zagsblog.net) that has also included the stop at Virginia, an earlier stop at Kansas and, at least, planned upcoming trips to Indiana, Louisville, Marquette, Rutgers, Maryland, Florida, Connecticut, Arizona, Memphis and Syracuse.

If he's 6'8," Burrell is 6'11."

If he's not going to upgrade his hs competition by transferring, it would certainly help his exposure if he stopped playing for his father's Unique All-Stars and played for one of NY's power programs.

From Super Showcase in Orlando, FL

http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=830304

"For City Rocks it was Tobias Harris that absolutely carved up the All-Ohio defense. At 6-foot-8, Harris can play on the perimeter and he took the All-Ohio defenders to the rack at will. When he wasn't able to get all the way to the rim he scored in the mid-range, and overall was just a machine.

Whenever City Rocks needed a bucket to stay in the game they got one from Harris. He finished with 22 points, and really opened eyes in the process.

Even with Harris playing great, Sullinger and company were just too much. All-Ohio pulled away in the fourth quarter and came home with an 83-69 win and another title."

Talk about it in the Message Boards
Tobias Harris is one of the most sort after players in the country. A multi-dimensional 6-foot-7 forward who can play both inside and out.

Tobias Harris cut his list and tranfers to LuHi
Harris not only has an exceptional basketball IQ but that coupled with a good handle, superior post up moves and a deadly three point shot have put him on the list of basically every high major college. NYC Hoops, however, has learned exclusively that the junior from Dix Hills, NY has made two big decisions. Harris finally cut that extensive list down to ten and made his choice of High School.

According to Harris' father, Torrel Harris, when he asked his son, which are his top ten schools, his son responded, 'My top ten are Louisville, Syracuse, Rutgers, Georgetown, Virginia, Maryland, Marquette, West Virginia, Wake Forest and USC.'

"Tobias chose these schools because they fit his style of play, because of the relationship with the coaches, playing time and also what he wants to do academically," says Torrel Harris. "He's looking to major in business." Torrel Harris also says that they factored into the decision making process, which players are graduating from each school with regard to trimming down the list to ten finalists.

Torrel Harris says, "We like Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Indiana but they're not on our top ten."

Torrel Harris also said that some schools didn't make any list as a result of their own accord. "There are three schools that could've been in the top ten, but they didn't step up and show that they really wanted him. They didn't even come to see him play over the summer."

The rest of the article goes onto talk about his transfer from half hallows to Long Island Lutheran

Where does everyone get this idea that Hurley doesn't want to send player to St. John's? Because he didn't like the way they handle the Engram situation when the current staff wasn't at the University? Coach Hurley is a pretty selfless person and he would do whatever he feels is best for the kids. If St. John's is then it is, if it isn't then it isn't but I don't think he is steering them in another direction.

JJ. . don't be naive to think Hurley would never hold a grudge...     he is a stubborn ?Irishman from Jersey City and he is an insanely loyal guy..    he feels the university didn't treat Ingram fairly..

I am not saying he will tell a kid to NOT go to SJU but "steer" a kid here..   very doubtful . . especially when any kid from St. Anthony we are going after more then likely has MULTIPLE opportunities elsewhere...

p.s. - FOR THE RECORD. .  I TOLD YOU GUYS HARRIS WAS TRANSFERRING ON 8/29

If St. John's was winning in the Big East again or putting guys into the league Hurley would forget things that happened really fast. He wants to send his guys to good programs to better themselves. I think the University has changed a lot for the better since the Pittsburgh scandal.

PS don't sell yourself short it was 8/19 you told us

8/19. . yes..  that was a typo. . ha ha ha

As for Hurley..   he ceratainly has not seen any player development here recently...    and I just don't see this staff changing that track record...    he is going to and has always tried to send his kids to the place where he knows they will be taken care of...

hurley has a very, VERY good relationship with fred hill at rutgers.  in fact, i believe that when hill was hired hurley said something on the record to the effect of "we're going to try and do our part to bring the state school to the top".  remember, these kids have other people influencing their decision so hurley may not be the only one in the mix here.  i dont know if hes pushing the kids to SJU but i would doubt that hes strongly discouraging them from coming to queens.
