I hope Tyshawn doesn't mind that you gave his # away.

Would love to have Parrom but Lance would fill the Garden.  Either way, the program is headed in the right direction.

Slight edit* I inadvertently left out a few sentences when publishing. Nothing drastic but a few lines were added.

Rivals.com "committment of the week":

http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=841207

COMMITMENT OF THE WEEK
St. John's landed local guard Omari Lawrence, a huge commitment for the Red Storm. Lawrence is the best player from the Big Apple to commit to the program since Rob Thomas in 2006.

Norm Roberts named Oz Cross and Kimani Young, both noted New York City AAU coaches, to his staff earlier in the week. Lawrence played for Cross on the New York Panthers and told NYCHoops.net that he had a good relationship with the coaches.

"My decision was based on the great coaching staff there and the level of comfort that I felt with the school. I just wanted to stay close to home," Lawrence told NYCHoops.net.

Lawrence, who will play at South Kent in Connecticut this year, is viewed as the piped-piper for the local players now. AAU and South Kent teammate Kevin Parrom is high on the wish list for St. John's. So is Lance Stephenson, a Coney Island native and one of the most recognizable names in high school basketball.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?page=briefingroom&recruitId=42971

Accoring to the New York Daily News, shooting guard Omari Lawrence verbally committed to St. John's on Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 Bronx, N.Y. native averaged 18.2 points per game for St. Raymond's last season but will suit up for South Kent this winter.

Lawrence had offers from Virginia, UConn, Clemson, Louisville and others but had the Johnnies at the top of his list for a while.

"Three things stood out to him," South Kent coach Kelvin Jefferson said. "It was close to home, the campus is surprisingly beautiful and he really enjoys the coaching staff. Norm Roberts and the group really did a nice job recruiting him."

He joins post-grad guard Malik Stith (Long Island City, N.Y./Bridgton Academy) in Roberts' 2009 class.

ESPN.com's recruiting coordinator Antonio Williams sees this commitment as the first step in returning St. John's to respectability.

"In his efforts to restore this once proud program, St. John's coach Norm Roberts will have to recruit the fertile grounds of New York for talent," Williams said. "Gaining a commitment from Lawrence goes a long way toward accomplishing this goal."

"Lawrence provides the Red Storm with a great scoring threat from the perimeter with good size and strength," continued Williams. "He has a knack for using his strength and quickness to get to the paint. Once at the rim, his strength allows him to take contact from defenders, and adjust in the air while still converting the basket. He also has the leaping ability to finish above the rim. This lefty has the range to connect on his jumper out to the 3-point line, but he needs to continue to increase his consistency in this area. Lawrence plays with good intensity and effort on both ends, which should allow him to continue to develop on the next level. Lawrence's pledge should send a positive signal to other talented, uncommitted prospects in the New York City area."

SJU Prospect Excited About Playing Near Home

By Mike Sullivan

The mecca of basketball is in New York City. There are pretenders out there for sure. But when you review the talent from top to bottom over the past several decades, the best players come from the tri-state area.

St. John's head coach Norm Roberts is trying to revitalize a Red Storm program. And he realizes to get to the highest level in the Big East, one must sign the top players from this area.

Roberts received a commitment from Omari Lawrence, the former St. Raymond's (Bronx, N.Y.) only last month. The 6-foot-4 swingman who is now at South Kent in Connecticut, dropped by one afternoon in August and gave his decision..

"Playing in front of family and friends was important," said Lawrence. "Playing in Madison Square Garden is exciting. I like the coaches at St. John's. I feel like I can contribute as a freshman.".

"I feel St. John's is the best place for me," Lawrence said. "I'll have the opportunity. I'll work hard and hopefully we can win a lot of games."

Omari is cleared to begin playing again.

He’ll have a pair of talented wings to make his life easier with Omari Lawrence (St. John’s) and Kevin Parrom (Xavier). Lawrence was back briefly from a shoulder injury, but is back out of action for another couple of weeks.

Does anyone know if Omari really played in Jim Couch Foundation Reunion All-Star Game  & if so how did he do coming off injury?
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"
