good move. not only bc of blizzard, but get their mind right, after draining weekend.
-
IMO This is a must win game. I think I am stating the obvious.
-
creighton is having a down year but it is still really hard to win on their court.
-
Creighton lost Isiah Zierder a few days ago for the season. Was shooting almost 40% from 3 and averaging just under 10 points.
-
Big East game, must win, lets go!
-
A loss in this one and we'll need to win the BET to make the tourney

Do we know if the team is there? I know I saw somewhere they were leaving early but haven't heard anything about whether they were able to make the flight

Did anyone notice that on Jan 18, Sheed's game died against Depaul; and 3 days later it was resurrected against Marquette? Hmmm!

I hinted at this the day he came back from his last hiatus.
Duke covered btw

I thought RJ wants to go to the NBA, thought I heard that there were scouts there from 8 different teams?
Unless he knows that he's coming back here next year.

It was a lame attempt at a Jesus resurrection joke. That's why I'm not in the comedy business.

Dominant defensive performance. I have a hunch that Sheed is going to off for a 25-30 point night.

Agree--SJU by 15.

Creighton - 69
Cretins ( coached by ) - 68
Desperate team that has been close in a bunch of BE losses. Even on the road. Hopefully, 3'lo gets back on track. I don't picture a walk in the park.
-
this is going to be a tough, tough game. going to be difficult to pull a W. that said, i can't predict a loss
SJU 63
Creighton 59

I don't remember the last time we covered
We were getting points at Providence, I believe.
-
They covered almost every game when they were ranked.
-
I do not think Jordan or his crew are angels by any sense but to publicly accuse him of point shaving is ridiculous. Let's all hope that is not the case or this program is going to be down the toilet without a possible return.

I think you and a few others misinterpreted my stupid joke. It had nothing to do with point shaving. Jeez!

-
Johnnies 80, Creighton 62
Our guys come out aggressive and it's over early.
-
This team is reeling right now and we have take a lead early and keep it. If we let them have hope then there crowd will get into it and we could be a factor. I think we are just so much more talented then this team that we will pull this one out.

Obekpa gets a matchup he can manage.... SJ's 74, CU 69
-
WOW @ that defensive play by Dom...
Ugly game so far otherwise...
-
Did they not give Wenzel a program? Deangelo Russell? And called Dom Obekpa
-
Announcers are horrible. He started talking about DeAngelo Russell and then Obekpa was credited for Doms block.
-
This is gross....as usual...
Kevin Kugler is a great football announcer.. Does NFL for WestWood one.. I'm sure college hoops isn't his thing.
-
Alibegovic comes in and nails a 3...
Remind me why he didn't play against Duke when our guys were running on fumes in the second half?

He should play more, but I am sorry all you Branch lovers, it is almost impossible for him to get minutes on this team because they don't even guard him. He can literally get a foul line jumper whenever he wants.
-
Duke would have guarded Amar. No open looks. He would have fouled out in 7 minutes also
-
This gimmick defense will work fro a few minutes. They stay in it all night. Greene will drop 30.
-
Someone explain to me the Branch for Jordan sub there?
-
With Harrison playing like Lee Green, this team, offensively, is the worst in the big east i think....
-
We are useless without Harrison/
-
Our offensive execution is just so ugly. Were not moving the ball like we did for 30mins against Duke.
why didnt dom have his hands up on that 3?!
-
were playing token defense on 3pt shooters.
You have to actually defend them guys! Just stnading close to them isnt good enough.
-
Can someone suggest to Lavin that maybe we should play man? Just saying

What is going on with Jordan??? Came out early, was playing well and he is out again???

How did Harrison not get fouled there? lol............

"What is up with Jordan?"

Lavin yanked him early after he was called for traveling.. Probably had words...would be my guess, if it's anything..
Although, he did tweet something about hurting his back earlier today, i think? Anyone else see that? Maybe? Bueller?

Not sure who Im more upset with, Lavin or the players.
Just crappy basketball from a team that doesnt know how to win.

We will look back in 5 years at this as the game that ended the Lavin era.

Nice run. Branch showing some confidence.

maybe we look back at this game as the beginning of Jamal Branch playing like an MVP? :)

We're Back!
Branch stepped up, good for him. Can't make the tourney w/o Jordan though. This is really frustrating.

yea JB! be confident out there

did Jordan get hurt? thats what someone on redmen said

Branch showing some balls

That was an insane pass by Branch

Branch what an assist....leading the charge
-
D completely lost his man there then commits a stupid foul. These guys can never pull away!!
-
Did this idiot (lavin) really come out with a zone in the first half(didnt watch first half)?! We are 100X more athletic than these Nebraskans.... not to mention the only way they can beat a team is if they shoot lights out. God talk about bad coaching

Rysheed with a strained left knee...unlikely to return.
Give Myles some minutes!!

Is Bob Wentzel the new Bucky Waters?

Entertaining

Wow, there we go. Anybody ever been more due for one of those to drop?

This isnt even a game if we didnt give them 6 open 3's in 1st half

I wonder what Harrison's mystery injury is. Definitely not just his calf. Gotta be something serious on his shoulder.
-
Where did Branch foul? I didn't see anything
-
Youre gonna foul the kid out on that??? Are you kidding me. And two points, thats terrible
-
I wonder what Harrison's mystery injury is. Definitely not just his calf. Gotta be something serious on his shoulder.
It was mentioned last game by Lavin in pre-game and after by Kieran Darcy he also had a shoulder injury.

just painful to watch this stuff...not sure what to say about it. nothing can go right for this team. from ineligible players to whatever rysheed is to just awful brain dead play on the court, particularly on the defensive end...feel bad that d'angelo will never get to see the tournament, he deserved better.
-
Guys don't worry. We played hard and this game shows the team is headed in the right direction

They play hard. Give coaching staff credit. But they are a dumb team and that is the ultimate indictment on the coach. That plus all the drama.... I am done with Lavin. Don't care who next coach is
-

I mean only 3 of our starters and 4 of our top 6 are seniors so obviously this is a young team. We'll hit our stride soon
-
Lost to a guy named Toby
-
It's the same issue over and over again...Harrison is hurt, somebody fouls, and something is up with Jordan. The result is that the team is playing 5 on 3 ball.
-
We lost to a fcking guy named TOBY

First bad loss on the resume, ugly night, no getting around it. Dee still isn't 100%.
Have to go 7-4, plus one BE win to be dancing. Tonight was a blemish on their profile, but this season, and their NCAA bubble, aren't even close to being bursted. This just once again, reduces the margin of error as the schedule shrinks to 11 remaining Big East games, plus x amount in the BET.

Tonight was certainly a bad loss.

Please understand the ebb and flow of amateur athletics, these kids are not pros, there are ups and downs to every team's season all around the country. Tonight sucked, but this team will be amongst the 36 teams voted for at large bids come Selection Sunday.
The margin of error has dwindled. Home and homes with Georgetown and Xavier remain, along with the return games up and down the BE schedule.
Our bubble has shrunk significantly over the past 3 weeks, the 11-1 start is really saving us right now. The fan base has to remain level headed though, to give up on this season right now is foolish.
-
I've never seen a team in 2nd to last place in their conference get an at large

Although, I certainly agree with you, in reference to the "ebbs and flows" of amateur athletics. Frankly, you see ebbs and flows throughout most sports (amateur and pro), but it's far more consistent and prevalent in amateur sports.
I'm certainly not a pessimist, but I'm having a tough time seeing this team playing in the NCAA Tournament at this point. Too many tough games still on the slate, and the margin for error is close to being razor thin at this point. If they win their next 4 games, then things suddenly changes.
It's gonna be tough, tough, tough.

We are going to beat Providence handily on Saturday just to give some of the more naive fans some more false hope. That's what this team does

Has nothing to do with the defense they were playing, our team can't shoot. If players are going to play five feet off you, you have to shoot and make the shot.

Also, I'll say it again for the 478the time, it's obvious Quanman works for Lavin. You can't take him seriously, his job is to come on here and tell us the company talking points, and give the same spin coach is spewing.
-
Like I've been saying since Day 1 with Lavin, there is no offensive chemistry or system on this team. None at all. It's difficult to watch.
It's more of that stupid 1-on-5 drive into the right corner or left and hand it off to Harrison or Greene and let them create. That is not an offensive system.
Also, Jamal Branch played great last night but there's not enough balls on this team for him so he'll most likely fall back into invisibility again.
Lavin has never even learned how to get Obekpa into the offense which is a real shame. He's become way too one dimensional when he has the tools to be a 10 and 10 guy on O.
The lack of bench is another strike against them.
This team is all upperclassmen, played together for years, highly rated recruits, and still can barely be on the bubble for an NCAA tourney berth. Very sad.

Insecure folks often protect themselves at all costs. He knows posse is catching up to him, but will maintain his "Joe Cool" veneer until he comes up with his exit strategy. Health, mom needs me back home, wife likes Cali or broadcasting is a passion, etc. Just pick one Steve.
Frankly I am ok with a change even if it means losing recruits this year. This formula has not worked & it is time to explore alternatives.

Feel like I attended the wake (first halh) and funeral (final score) all in one night. RIP SJU 2014 -2015 season. Lump in my throat for DLo and Dom - they deserve better !
-
Just can't find a way to win these close ones even when a lot goes right:
+++'s
- Out best 3 pt. shooting night, ever? 10 for 18
- 19 assists to only 8 turnovers as a team
- Outboarded them by 6. Eight on the offensive glass.
- Aggie has the outing of his career.
Yet still done in by:
- - -'s
- Painfully slow start giving them and the crowd something to believe in.
- Gave up a ridiculous 9 first half 3's and 5 of 6 to a freshman off the bench named Toby.
- Savior only plays 7 minutes with a knee injury/brain injury/Lavin problem??? Your pick
- Our best player shoot's 27% from the field as the death blow 4 game skid continues
- Aggie, not used to playing this much, fouls out in only 28 minutes for holding a cutter running away from the basket.
- Bluejays shoot 86% from the line to our 59% from the line.
-
Congrats to Phil Greene IV for passing prolific scorer and Puke killer; elite 8 team star and all around fan favorite Marvis "Bootsy" Thornton and Knick power forward supreme offspring; outside shooting; high leaping and oft injured Anthony "Mase" "Junior" Mason - to move into 42nd on the St. John's University all-time point scoring annals.

Basically just that Sampson had told Lavin on the Friday or Saturday that he was going to commit and Lavin told him to hold off on announcing until Monday morning (which was a dead day in CBB) to get a little extra pub around the announcement instead of it getting buried under the CBB news over the weekend.
It's not a huge deal and I don't blame Lavin for doing it, it just goes to show that Lavin is constantly thinking of PR. I got lambasted in the Sampson thread for this theory, but I'm sticking with it

Jeez, the psycho analysis, this group is amazing. Lavin is NOT Wojo and shouldn't be. He is who is, so get over it.
Criticize him all you want, but leave the guy his personality. He is consistent to the annoyance of many here. What a joke. This board can be embarrassing.

Right,we're miserable and coach is on laugh in. If it's all a joke to him I'll feel less pained when he gets the boot. This not a one time thing with him. He's always hysterical after a loss.

Plenty of things to critize Lavin without making things up. Guy is plenty intense. Wishing someone good game is not a bad attribute . None of you have any idea what happened with Sampson, and how and when he announced coming to St. John's .

After we beat Marquette... Wojo got thru the hand shake line in seconds and could tell all he cared about was the fact that they lost, loved seeing that intensity.
I just don't get that. Where is the frustration and disappointment with this guy?
I get that he wants to remain positive, but there's just no sense of urgency.
Doesn't he realize the season is slipping away?
Insecure folks often protect themselves at all costs. He knows posse is catching up to him, but will maintain his "Joe Cool" veneer until he comes up with his exit strategy. Health, mom needs me back home, wife likes Cali or broadcasting is a passion, etc. Just pick one Steve.
Frankly I am ok with a change even if it means losing recruits this year. This formula has not worked & it is time to explore alternatives.
You can't leave his personality out of it.
Who he is, is part of the problem. The spinning and hot air is detrimental to the program.

We don't lose because of his personality . We lose because he sucks at coaching basketball. His personality helps us with recruiting and giving interviews.

I think it is the exact opposite. Its not the coaching that makes us lose. Its his personality that lead him to recruit/or not recruit certain players and it hasn't worked out.

It's kind of amazing to me that he hasn't recruited more players who can cover for his in-game coaching deficiencies. It does seem that the staff is focused on higher IQ players in this recruiting cycle. A back court of Sampson + Mussini, for example, seem like a perfect fit for the free flowing "structure" Lavin has implemented as our "system." Guys like Jakarr, Dom and Sheed, athletic specimens with NBA physical attributes but low BBall IQ, exacerbate Lavin's X & Os flaws. We need more guys with situational intelligence on the court to make this thing sustainable given Lavin's coaching abilities

I strongly disagree that Dom has low basketball IQ

Implying that Dom, Harrison , Greene , or branch are dumb, have low basketball IQ's , or are not winning players us shockingly insane.

Greene is dumb as dirt. I've known smarter quartz. Pointer is not as dumb as Greene, but he's certainly not smart.
Question: if any of them are winners, what have they won?
-
They are only 4. They are not the problem. Greene sometimes takes bad shots, partly by circumstance, and partly because his ego has gotten big. He plays good defense . Dumb as dirt doesn't make sense, please explain.

Greene has the worst basketball instincts I have ever seen. You can actually watch him physically get confused. Despite the tough loss it was nice to see the circle offense come out on the 2nd to last possesion. I would let Pointer play point before ever letting Greene do it again

Please explain why a player spends 13 seconds dribbling around looking for a long two with his foot on the three point line with 25 seconds left in a game down 4 and then I'll answer your question.
Phil Greene is awful and dumb as a rock. At least Pointer tries. That you mention the two of them in the same sentence defies logic.

+ fun

as a PG he is awful. When he is not playing PG which is most of the time I don;t think he plays dumb.

Phil Greene is awful and dumb as a rock. His strength is shooting and he's not very good at it. Other than what he's not very good at he stinks at every other facet of the game. End of discussion.

Now that Wasju has come over to the dark side, Doc is numero uno Greene hater supreme. It's misguided, illogical and just plain stupid on his part.

Rectangle has been a double digit scorer in EVERY SINGLE BE contest and 9 out of the last 10!
In Conference play:
AVERAGING 14.4 ppg. 10th in the league
45% shooting percentage 14th in the league (mostly front court players ahead of him...among guards he's like 3rd)
41% 3pt shooting percentage 12th in the league
16 three pointers total 8th in the league
1.1 steals per game 13th in the league
42nd leading scorer in the 107 year history of St. John's University
What's that you are whining about? This perimeter oriented guard doesn't get offensive rebounds. Yes, he only has 6 on the season. Know what? The best player in the entire league, Sterling Gibbs, has 9. Gibbs is averaging about .4 offensive boards a game and Rhombus is .3.
What's that other drivel? Oh, he doesn't get to the free throw line often? True dat. But at least when he get's there he's shooting 76% from the line.
Take your WEAK A$$ anti-Phil rhetoric back to BEB's where it belongs. You are out on an island entirely alone on this one. Hey, it's kinda like BEB's so you should enjoy that. The entire ever lovin Johnny nation nowadays appreciates, respects him and wakes up in a cold sweat if dreaming about where this team and this season would be without Mean Joe.
And I almost forgot....SYRACUSE!!!!!!!!!

Phil Greene stinks, you're an imbecile, and those nice personic nicknames you use are insipid and embarrassing.

"Your game reports on Beb this season have been outstanding. I've really been enjoying them. I know I speak for Johnny fans and rubes everywhere in thanking you for taking the time and effort to write them."

I have never gotten mad at guys for missing shots and through no fault of his own Phil is one of the top 3 scorers on the team. We have no alternative. He has to shoot. We have no other option. He has played really well in some games and he has played what he is in most. In a perfect world he is the first guard off the bench. My criticism and really it was Lavin's fault has always been watching him try to play point guard. That is painful to watch.
The only thing that seems to come naturally to Phil on a basketball court is shooting. And if you look at his shooting %, he is not that good at the thing he is best at.

The Creighton one was tremendous. The mood and general tone of the thing succinctly reflected the feeling of Johnny fans everywhere. I should have written that "I've really been enjoying them Except for the lopsided and misguided Trapezoid bashing".
For instance, you've been complaining that the Rhombus has been the anti-Costco. Then not a mention how in addition to his automatic double digit scoring and stellar 3 point shooting ( 2 for 3 ) against Creighton, he pulled in 6 rebounds and had a 5 to 1 assist/turnover ratio in the game.
Your now the only St. Johns fan anywhere that doesn't like him. Perhaps your wrong.
And oh yeah....wait for it....SYRACUSE!!!!!!!!

You must have missed it:

41% 3pt shooting percentage 12th in the league.
The days of a sweet shooting left handed guard/forward from Brooklyn and a guard named after a popular brand of beer shooting north of 50% are long, long gone. Square is shooting a better percentage this season than your Bffl 3'lo has ever shot in a season. His shooting percentage has gone up every year he's been here. He's shooting a better percentage in conference than non-conference.
Guards shooting 40% or just under it is now the new normal. 40 is the new 50!

Thanks for the advice, although it might be easier to take coming from someone who could spell better than a sixth grader. Embarrassed can be tough - I'm man enough to admit that sometimes even I have trouble with it - is it two Rs and two S's or one R or what. It's tricky right? Of course I know how many syllables it has, so that makes it a little easier.
Here's a neat way to remember for future reference. Imagine that you forgot to put on your pants in the morning and didn't notice until you were on the subway. You'd look down and say: I'm bare assed naked. All you have to do is take the "I'm bared assed" part, change the I to an E, take out the apostrophe and and swap out the E (as in elementary school) for an R (as in retard) and then just smush it all together. Watch:
I'm bare assed.
E'm bare assed.
Em bare assed.
Em barr assed.
Embarrassed.
See how easy?
