Was a JuCo All American this past season as a freshman and it appears as though we are showing interest in him again.

Great stats across the board and great size for a 2 guard. Believe Odessa is a pretty good juco program so this guy sounds more than intriguing.

This is for next year or the year after?

This year...
-
Fordham, is that an old tweet from our original offer? Don’t see it in his timeline currently? Or he deleted it?
-
Old. See the date I started this thread back in 2016.
He committed to NM ST in 2016 and enrolled mid season. Coach left for New Mexico he got a release to transfer. Went JUCO last year and is eligible to transfer this year with 3 years of eligibility since he redshirted that one year at NM St.

Is this Ponds insurance? We seem to have an abundance of guards this year unless Trimble is transferring or Ponds is leaving.

Ok, Thx Fordham

Many people are always trying to read so much into recruiting.
Sometimes it is simply trying to position yourself to get good players regardless of the position.

I haven’t seen anything tying us to him. Did someone just hear something?

6’5” JC First team AA who shoots almost 50% from 3, averages 21 ppg !Yes please! Would be that shooting wing we really need...

Are there 1 or 2 ships left to offer this offseason?

Yes, just saw those stats. Sign me up for him and Burke. Interesting for a former 4 star recruit and juco aa I don’t see anything about his recruitment. Matt and him following each other is a good sign though.

Was scheduled to go to Western Kentucky, but that fell through. I am not sure why. I would be surprised if SJU does not land him.

So we have Dixon, Trimble, Williams and we recruit another SG?
We need big players!!!

A lot of the better programs you would think would be on a kid with these kind of numbers, and a 4 star pedigree out of HS. Seems a little too good to be true. Are there academic issues? Why did he go JUCO out of HS?

He had offers from Florida, Louisville, Miami, Virginia Tech, New Mexico State, LSU and Texas Tech . He committed to New Mexico but the coach quit and took another Job offer so he went the JUCO route.

Would be a very underrated get it seems, good upside.

Why did he go JUCO out of HS?
He was following in Walter Berry's foot steps. Sorry, you've probably never heard of Walter Berry. He was a basketball player. Ironically his nickname was the Truth.
Poor Chicken Little. Too bad you don't have any imaginary friends who went to New Mexico, they could have filled you in.
-
I think SJU gets him and he becomes a key player next year. Immediate contributor.

I wasn't criticizing him for going to a JUCO, dummy. I just wanted to know why he did, and why other top programs aren't in on him after he had such a good year. Understand dumb-dumb? If you want I can try to explain it to you further since we all know you're not very bright.
-
Earning 1st team all-American JUCO is incredibly difficult. I'd be very happy with him at SF.

Especially as a freshman. This kid is a walking bucket, he can score in a multitude of ways, has good size, footwork. For what he'd mean to our overall depth chart and need for another scorer it's time to get excited again around here bc he would put our backcourt over the top.
-
Hoping we get this done. Kid can shoot and is nice wing scorer. Hard to deal with scorers like Ponds, Dixon, Figueroa coupled with Simon, Clark, G-will etc. winning now is important for us. Still would need another big though imho.

Agree on big, but does not appear that will happen
-
I would like a big. But think this will work. DLO sr year we only had 1 big and no depth and made the dance. Simon could spend some time at the 4. He would provide much needed quality depth.
-
Could be our Desi Rodriquez. We need good players and appears to be one as does Burke. May have to play small for a year and then hopefully Cockburn or the like.
-

Actually stupid that's not what happened at all. What happened was that SJ was mentioned as a suitor for this player, who admittedly I'd never heard of him before today and likely you haven't either. But being a die hard SJ fan you felt the need to disparage him for considering attending the school for which you allegedly root, so you said
"you would think would be on a kid with these kind of numbers, and a 4 star pedigree out of HS."
And not surprisingly you were wrong: any number of well regarded programs were after this kid after HS.
Then you said: "are there academic issues?"
Which no there aren't, although I admire your willingness to slander the likely academic achievements of a poor minority teenager with a suspiciously foreign sounding name in your eagerness to denigrate the program you which you allegedly root. In for a penny in for a pound.
And then, to complete the trifecta of stupid you said: Why did he go JUCO out of HS?
Which once again and completely unsurprisingly displayed your complete and utter ignorance of all things related to college basketball: he went JUCO only after the Division 1 coach he committed to at NM went elsewhere. Which is a route any number of excellent college players have taken, including one of the greatest players at the program you allegedly root for, the one whose nickname you've adopted as your screen name: The Truth. See how stupid you are stupid? Perhaps you don't, you seem to be one of those exquisite stupids who mistakes his own stupidity for cleverness.
we all know you're not very bright.
Who's we stupid? You and all your imaginary friends who managed to get accepted to St John's? Good god you're dumb. How do you turn on your computer without breaking a bone? Never mind answering, that's rhetorical.
-
I'll tip my cap to Matt if he pulls this off.
-
Obviously I've never seen him play but judging his by accolades and size I think he'd be our starting 3 right off the bat. A starting lineup of Ponds, Simon, LJ, Clark and Keita is solid. Then add in Dixon in a microwave off the bench type role plus minutes for Trimble + Williams and that's a good squad. Just one more true big away from having the potential to do something really special. But we all know it's never easy around here
-
You get the chance to add a wing player who can score and you take it. Would give us more options playing small ball with Simon in the front court.
-
If our lineup has 3 top 100 recruits Clark, Figueroa and a couple of 4 star freshman off the bench there should be no excuses for not winning. Other coaches in our conference have made the tournament with less.

Figueroa was also top 100 on 247. If we land him and bring back ponds there’s no excuse not to dance.

I meant to add "as a freshman." Goes without saying that I would welcome a 3-4-5 of Fig-Simon-Clark.

How are we standing with him.

This is the guy I want. Hoping getting any of these transfers doesn’t rule him out. Any idea?

@AdamZagoria
LJ Figeuroa- Juco all American just committed to St. John's, per source. Plays next year. Has 3 years
-
Good pickup and he's actually eligible for next year so even better.
-
Although jucos usually need a year to adjust, I do think it's fair to presume he can step in right away and contribute. Really happy about this. Gotta give the staff credit for the past two days.
I really hate when people speculate on these kids' future. But I'm going to be a hypocrite. Is Trimble going to stick around? The log jam there is evident.
-
This kid is going to put us over the top, credit Matt for finding this diamond in the rough.
-
Kudos. Wing scorers are always valuable. Hopefully he helps replace some of Ahmed’s points while being a little more efficient.
-
Very happy w this pickup. Will give us some much needed breathing room depth wise. Plus he had a great freshman year and has 3 years left.
-
Great pickup.
-
I have no problem with this pickup, and actually felt we should target him once I saw his accolades and overall numbers, this season.
Solid pickup!
-
Fantastic pickup. Scoring wing that we needed. This is great for us and he’s ready to play.. love his stats as a first team juco AA...
-
Of the 6 new kids coming in next year (3 HS seniors, 3 transfers) he is the best in terms of ready to play.
-
Love it. Gives us a ton more lineup versatility and likely moves Dixon from starter to a scorer off the bench role which is probably more suited for anyway this upcoming season

Nice pick up-its Salsa Time again!
-

Kid is a smooth player inside and out. Great touch off glass. Very efficient per the numbers which is great. A glaring weakness for us was a wing who could spread the floor. Apparently a 7-foot wingspan as well per article I posted.
-
This could also help open up a pipeline to the Dominican national team talent that I believe has been on the way up lately
-
You think more so than Dixon or Keita?

+1
Could see him replacing Bash's 11 and 5 easily and more efficiently.
-
Love the combination of juco aa honors along with a top 100 hs ranking. The 48.2% from 3pt for the year in juco is insane.
Anyone know what was the reasoning for him going juco?
-
Those two were on the team this past year. I'm talking about the brand new kids.

Got it.

We have had good luck in the past with JUCO's such as Billy Goodwin, Walter Berry, Marcus Hattan, Justin Brownlee, Dwight Hardy, Boo Harvey and Michael Porter, The Whopper and Bash. Hopefully it continues.

Don’t forget Bootsy Thornton and quite a few others. Some of these transfers we are getting are even better because they’re 3-year transfers..
-
Great get.
-
Him and Simons’ wingspans will help us a lot with our lack of size. Simon plays more like 6’7 than he 6’4. LG has that same look.

Watched a ton of videos on him, not much from juco, but this kid is going to be a big problem
for teams next year. Kid has a condor wingspan massive hands and goes both hands well. Very good in open court and finishes well everywhere. Can’t believe we landed a kid like this at this stage. Easily starter at SF. Won’t lose a step having lost Bashir and this kid a ton more controlled. Very excited bout this one.
Some decent clips... talented kid and these are old...

We just heard about this kid a few days ago and now we have signed him already. Some posters seem to have knowledge of recruiting that the rest of us don't. We must have been on this kid for a while as he seems like a great pick up so I highly doubt we have only been recruiting him for a few days so how is it nobody ever mentioned him for this seasons recruiting efforts? Guess staff is able to keep things on the QT if they want too.
-
They are different players, but Marilac's comp of Simon to Dom isn't as far off as some think. Simon more of a ball handler and can knock down an open 3, while not having Dom's defensive prowess or physicality. But I think Simon can play a similar role next year in causing havoc on D, in the open floor and hopefully on the offensive glass at times.

They offered him in HS. Staff was always aware of him. Recruiting is fluid and he jumped at the chance to play closer to home and in a town where there is a large Dominican community.

Love marillac but ive mentioned the simon/dom thing a few times since hes been here, he gives himself enough pats on the back ;) What made me say it was more the offensive side of it. Both of them have unbelievable athletic abilities and thier first instinct is to pass. Neither of them needed to be guarded at the 3 point line al,l though Simon did hit a great % while left wide open. Put them in the high post from time to time where its one dribble to a finish or a pass and they will flourish. Agree with what you mention defensivly, think simon could mess around and average near 2 blks a game. Maybe as our 4th/5th best scorer he could consistantly go out and get us 10 pts, 7-8 rbs, 4-5 assits 2 stls, 2 blks plus play great D. What an awesome peice to have.
When Dixon, LJ, and Keita figure out how to mesh with our 3 key returners we will have a real solid 6 man rotation with a few peices to add depth.
-
Wow I completely missed his and Eli's commitments. HUGE. This kid takes away our need for another big (although you can never have too many) with proper coaching and players playing the correct positions.
Mase, I welcome you as co-president of the Simon as PF committee. For those that like him as a guard, wouldn't you agree he's better driving against fours instead of being defended by guards? He is awesome in the paint defensively and on the glass. Let's keep him in the paint. Fig allows us to play "small" at 6'5-6'5-6'8.
I'm not as high on Eli Wright but it's a low risk move.

How fair is it to the kid to play him out of position for the next level? Is he going to be a PF any where at the pro level let alone the NBA? Sure you can ask him to play some minutes there but not fair to him to make it his primary position. Not a good way to attract recruits-come to St. John's and we will play you out of position. This would all but guarantee Simon leaves after this year to either turn pro or go the grad transfer route.

Simon's only chance of playing in the NBA is as a combo forward unless he transforms his skill set in the next two years. He needs to look at guys like Jared Dudley to model his game after. His stength, athleticism and length allow him to be able to lockdown three positions and keep two others honest. His greatest NBA asset by a mile is his length and his greater NBA talent is rebounding and it's not even close.
Some of you get too hung up on position labels. Get him in the high post where he can utilize his strengths of passing and athleticism while minimizing his weaknesses of dribbling and shooting. Let him switch on everything to highlight his defensive versatility. Let him set screens on offense and lick his spots to take slower bigs from the perimeter. That's his ticket to a successful pro career.

I disagree with my boy Marillac on where Simon should play but he and others have brought up the premise of the positionless system. Other than 1 big I'm just thinking its going to be a bunch of blah on defense and rebounding. Only hope is get steals up and hopefully play better on man d so to keep shot % down and pray we rebound at least defensively because offensively it's going to be make it or fall back

LJ is a bucket. So happy Matt stayed on him.
Ponds, Dixon, LJ, Simon is scoring bunches. A lot of Big East coaches I spoke to today were pissed.

That's exciting to hear. Good info. We need someone to grab defensive rebounds to start that scoring. Our top returning rebounder is 6'5'' 185 lb. JS. Hope Matt nabs someone late

Who is 185 lbs? Simon was a rock solid 215 last year and you'd expect him to add to that this offseason.

Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're good. And sometimes you are both. In this case SJU was both.
Either way LJ is a big addition.

I think that's right. Of course a starting caliber PF would be great, but a backup who can play a solid 15-20 minutes would be great (maybe Abdul Lewis?). For college, Clark is fine at the 4.

Having Simon and LG at guards at the same time give us a pretty long lineup.
-
If we get ponds back that simon ponds and LJ back court will be as good as any. Add Dixon Williams and Trimble off the bench and wow that’s a deep group. Need another big man in the rotation.

If they are playing guard at the same time I'll personally pack Mullin's things up.

I don't know about back court, but Simon and LJ should be two good forwards next to Shamorie.

I think you get the sentiment of my statement. We are deep 1-3

We definitely are... it’s a good thing. We still need Ponds. Waiting to hear about that is even more important about who plays where.

I guess you missed the part of the article that said all the evaluators thought he was more of a guard than a forward?

No, they said he was a true wing that isn’t gonna be playing inside, as opposed to bashir who could play on wing but also inside aka “more guard than forward.” If you read it in context, they’re not saying he’s a guard, only that he’s more of a perimeter guy that can handle and shoot, not more of a tweener PF-type like Bashir or Clark. Bottom line he’s a prototypical small forward..

I think Wasju loves the cross race player comparisons. LJ reminds me a little of Luke Hancock and I hope were so lucky. I think instantly he gives us more composure, ball movement, and spacing than we had with Ahmed (guard). How well he will do on the boards and defensively will determine the true difference between the two. Even more so than replacing Ahmed I look at it as replacing Sid. Not only is LJ a huge part of next season but he is a big part of our future as well.

Everyone is a guard on sh*tty teams. That's why they are sh*tty.

He looks like an easy shoe-in for Bashir’s spot to me... will give more offensive firepower and can spell Simon who Ian totally different type player.

Let's give him some time and not go crazy year one. Dixon has torn up D-1 and has spent another year with the program. Dixon is more prepared to start.

How about the note on bringing Felipe into the recruitment? Smart and awesome.
-
He actually reminds me a lot of Francisco Garcia of Louisville. Not only the Dominican thing, but very similar players, build etc.

Could anyone share a link to recent video of LJ? I only see 2015 clips on YouTube.
Thank you.
