Is there any doubt that he is the best Olympic athlete of all time?

I don't think there is any argument there after last night...

I hope everyone appreciates what a truly amazing performance they have witnessed over the past 9 days..   UNBELIEVABLE

Well the fact that he won so many different events is just amazing. To put it in perspective its like being a sprinter and a marathon runner. People train their whole lives to win one gold and here he is winning 8 in one shot and breaking a boat load of world recrods to boot.

"Anybody can say whatever they want, but I know I'm clean," Phelps said. "People can question it all they want, but the facts are the facts. I have the results to prove it."

He is taking part in "Project Believe," a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency volunteer initiative where athletes provide additional testing that is more frequent and more sophisticated than the usual regime of tests.

Um, not quite.  It's not like he swam the 1500 free or anything.  It's a marvelous achievement but swimmers swim multiple disciplines and distances all the time.  I'm not arguing the fact that he may be the greatest Olympic athlete of all time, he may be and he's obviously the most decorated, just trying to temper the hyperbole.

I guess it also depends on what your personal idea is of greatest.  I heard someone say Tommy Smith and John Carlos were the greatest.  Kind of out there but they were certainly more important that Phelps.  I'd also point out that there is far greater difference between the 100M and the Long Jump than the butterfly and the crawl.  But for my money Jesse Owens has to be the greatest AND most important of all time.
