I dropped by Jason Curry’s Big Apple Challenge, which pits the top teams from the New York Public League against those from the Catholic League. As usual, Curry’s event was top notch.

St. John’s head coach Norm Roberts, Rutgers assistant Craig Carter, Providence assistant Pat Skerry and Siena assistant Andrew Francis were among those on hand. The featured game of Sunday’s action at Baruch saw Thomas Jefferson of Brooklyn beat Bishop Loughlin of Brooklyn 63-61.

Jefferson sophomore guard Davontay Grace won the MVP award after scoring 21 points on 5-for-14, including 3-for-4 from three. He was 8-for-8 from the stripe, and added 5 assists, 5 steals and 7 turnovers.

Jefferson senior guard Keith Spellman had a game-high 25 points while going 6-for-15 from the field and 13-of-15 from the line. He added 12 rebounds, 7 steals and 8 turnovers.

Junior forward Joel “Air Jamaica” Wright did not have a good game for Jefferson. He fouled out with just 3 points on 1-of-2 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line.

Jefferson David Coley is out for several weeks with a knee injury.

For Loughlin, Pinkston finished with just 11 points on 4-from-10 shooting from the field. He also had 5 rebounds.
