Best 376 Colleges

My nephew just showed me the book THE BEST 376 COLLEGES (2012 Edition, Princeton Review).

I turned to the page about St. John's and found the following stats:

# of applicants  54,891
% of applicants accepted 46%
% of those accepted who attend 12%


Average High School GPA 3.20

% graduated top 10% of class            20%
% graduated from top 25% of class    35%
% graduated from top 50% of class    66%

Being the math whiz that I am, this means that 34% of students entering the university finished in the bottom half of their high school class. One-third of the class !!!

Range SAT Critical Reading 480-590
Range SAT Math                 490-620

% of students graduating within 4 yrs.     36%
% of students graduating within 6 yrs.     58%

Needless to say, these stats don't help us in the U.S. News rankings.

Total undergrad enrollment 12,067
% from out of state   25%
% who live on campus 30%

Diversity on Campus:

Male/Female 46/54

Caucasians 37%
African Americans 18%
Asian 18%
Hispanic 16%
International 4%

As an aside, what surprised me in looking at the book was that colleges such as SIENA and MANHATTAN were not included. Go figure.

As I understand it, the best 376 make adjustments for certain types of schools as well. At least a little after my high school years they did - so they wouldn't be heavy on Northeastern liberal arts colleges and the University of California schools. There are a lot of definitions of quality, for sure; Forbes' list of top schools is frankly bizarre, for example.

hi 205, one flaw to the bottom 50% stat is....

Let's say a young man is the bottom 50% at Chaminade High School (where 75% is needed to pass a class) verse a young man who is the bottom 50% at Franklin K Lane High School. Apples and Oranges no doubt, but overall your point is well taken.

Which brings up a point what is SJU's formula for acceptance and other schools?

Point well taken. Sort of like who is the smarter kid: someone with a 2.8 taking calculus and organic chemistry or someone with a 3.4 taking athletic admin. courses.

Another thing I would like to point out is that kids that live and grew up in NY often have to work more hours while attending school because the cost of living is so much higher. This effects the time to graduate and obviously their GPAs as well. I wonder how St. John's compares with schools like Fordham, Hofstra, etc.   

I'm sorry, but that was one of the lamest excuses I have ever heard.
